"De-mixing" Sonic Generations 3DS' Big Arm to run on Sega Genesis

Jun Senoue's version of Big Arm in the 3DS version of Sonic Generations is legendary, and I think most would consider a true successor to the original (same goes for his version of Casino Night!). If you haven't listened to it, you can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/sYV3e90zjE4/v-deo.html
I was curious what it would sound like had it been created back in 1994 and used as the final boss theme, with the same restrictions on sound chip hardware. Unfortunately, no midi file existed so I had to create one from scratch. Thankfully, @deannkosi2079 had already transcribed the lead instrument on his channel, and I was able to enter the notes as the sheet music scrolled by. If not for that starting point, I can't say I would have made this - I am absolutely terrible at pitch detection and music transcription. Thankfully, there's tools these days for the pitch-inclined such as myself.
I used www.lalal.ai/ to split Senoue's version into as many stems as possible, so make it easier to look at the frequency spectrum to determine which note was playing. Then used Audacity with its EQ and spectrum analysis. I had to really EQ the stuff with some steep slopes to carve out the noise, but I think it turned out pretty well. I am sure there are a few wrong notes in the harmony as I could cleanly separate them out, so if you want to take a stab at fixing it please do - the midi file is linked above.
To recreate the Genesis' sounds, I used the Genny vst (www.wonthelp.info/genny/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2). I imported Sonic 3's version of Big Arm from vgmrips.net/ into Genny, which let me use the same instrument parameters the devs used for the original version. I used ValleyBell's (github.com/ValleyBell) vgm2mid tool to create a midi from the original Big Arm as a starting place, as the first part of the remix is the same (with only slight alterations).
Then throw in a bunch of work and experimentation and this is the result! It's certainly not expected to 'replace' the 3DS version or anything, but it was a curiosity of mine.
www.vgmusic.com is currently not accepting midi file uploads as they work on some backend stuff, so if they ever come up I'll upload the 3DS midi file there.

I wasn't able to use all the curves and ricochets I had collected in Secret Ingredients 8, so this 3-part series of 3-minute clip dumps will feature those. Some of the clips were too long, some I couldn't get to sync with the music well, some required some setup time for the payoff, and some just weren't curvy too small for what I wanted to showcase in my final Secret Ingredients.

I haven't had the chance to upload a Secret Ingredients in 120fps yet, and since my experiment seems to be a success, I figured I'd try this! To play at 120fps, set the playback speed to 2x (and make sure your monitor can display 120 fps and that your settings in your OS (e.g. windows/etc) are at least 120 fps for that monitor). A far more curvier curve montage - cross map curves, blind ricochets, collats, curves AND ricochets, 2 curves 1 combo... I am quite happy with these clips. I collected over 140 clips for this, using only the curviest ones and the most unique ones. No little curves here. I know I said that Secret Ingredients 7 was my last one, and it really was going to be. But then Titanfall 2 launched on steam...

My bullets don't go straight. Kraber only this time, mostly curve shots but there's a ricochet section as well. This video is a year and a half old now. I don't believe they were part of AIR at the time, and in either case this video is to show off the sample pack I created. When I last checked back then, there was no such pack available - for anyone.

Nice video! While the sounds are definitely improved, its also quite impressive how well the developers approximated the Korg with limited hardware.
Since not everyone can process what was said in the description, I'll summarize here. What you're hearing is the channel owner reconstructing the music with better samples, to hear the music the way it sounded before it was pushed onto consoles. 1) The way the console works, parts of the processor force the sound chip to put out compressed sound. It couldn't handle uncompressed music on top of what else it was busy doing. 2) Also because of the limits of the sound chip itself, certain sound samples (like cymbal crashes) cannot play at the same time as other sound samples. 3) Fixing this issue would have been too expensive to push on to the customer. They could have slightly sacrificed graphics to improve the audio quality, but this was at a time when graphics needed to be the forefront, at least on the marketting front.

@@Sengin31 That’s fascinating! It would’ve been so cool to know him at least with like a voice recording or something. I never favor much of the crunchy PCM samples in Mega Drive/Genesis games. I get why and it’s a big challenge pushing every sound effects to the rom with the game data too.

I was pretty surprised to see that 3D Blast used mostly the same set of percussion samples. It makes sense to save on resources, but the format of the music and the synths chosen are so different from 3&K I just never realized.
