How many Parkruns got cancelled?? #25by25
Storm Bert came through and ruined everyone's Saturday morning this week by causing every parkrun for miles around to be cancelled due to ice and snow.
So instead, we take you out on our Sunday long run as we talk you through what we've been up to and what progress we are making in our quest for a sub 25 parkrun at the very start of 2025.
Shout out to Mark over at @sagsdothedu who inspired me to take up additional side-quests and aiming for a 5 minute plank by Christmas. Go and check him out and give his channel some love. The chap is full of energy and his content is great for helping to motivate me to get out the door and keep putting the work in.

Did half marathon training help our 5K times? - Heaton Parkrun

How much can training to run a half marathon really help you with your 5km times? Today we find out. 2 weeks ago we attempted, and failed, to record a new POV of Heaton Parkrun to try and demonstrate how much difference the last 2 months of training for the Manchester Half Marathon has made. You two were flying tonight, I used to do an 8 x 400 interval session with 45s recoveries but I’d be doing well if I hit 4:30/km which you did on almost every one. Just be careful not to overdo it😊I did the GMR in 2022😊

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner 10 днів тому

      Thanks Andy! You are right and its important to stress that the pace was carefully balanced with our recovery times. We were taking between 2 and 3 minutes recovery between each rep on this one to enable those faster paces and really target VO2 improvement. If we halved the recovery to 45 seconds then I would imagine we'd be a lot closer to 5:00/km and I think that would target my lactate threshold more. We had no idea about the GMR in 2022 until all the runners got on the tram home with us with their medals on. Now look at us! 🤣

    Really like these raw workout videos. Well done on a great session. 10 x 400 is a 5k classic interval set and pacing can be very hard. But you held it together despite that fast first rep. I always try and ease into this type of session and make the first couple of reps the slowest. Looking good for nailing a faster 5k on those results 👊

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner 11 днів тому

      Thank you good sir! I wasn't sure how this one would work out. It is, as you say, a bit of a raw one, but I think it's important to share that this is how we get better and we all feel a little beat up at the end of these sessions. The first rep was a little fast but fortunately not so fast that we burned ourselves out too soon. We did adjust our recoveries where needed to make sure we could get through all 10 reps and got as much benefit out of the session as possible. Thanks for watching as always ❤

    Oh no, no tune! Guessing the dispute didn't get a good result? I've not heard back yet! Great run, like the look of the parkrun, definately one for us to visit. Looked a bit trail like, would you reckon trail shoes for this? Glad the camera got the whole thing this time. Think the head strap could do with a tighten. Mine wobbled like this a little last week at Barnsley because it had loosened a bit. You'll get more butter footage from this cam 😊

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner 17 днів тому

      Don't worry. I'm saving the tune and dispute for a bonus video of just the race coverage and opted to leave it out for this one. Plus becky preferred having the ode to the fallen bit in because she has a tattoo of it so I went with this instead. I forgot to enable the low light jitter option and i think the iso was jumping around a bit but I will get the hang of it in time. It is a much better bit of kit than the go3s so I'm certain i will get better footage once I've got the hang of it. I really appreciate your pointers that helped me get anything useful out of it without being able to test it first. As for the run, the paths are all fairly well established and road shoes are fine, but I wouldn't recommend carbons. It's a really nice run. I recommend paying attention on the first lap and a half to work out where you are going to start kicking on for the finish. The first time we did this run we started trying to sprint for home not realising we still had 800m left and I thought i was going to have a cardiac with 200m to go. This time we waited until after passing the carpark to push on.

    You held 4:00 - 4:30 a few times throughout the run so you have speed in you. 192 BPM is high and mine would be 186 BPM. It's being able to enhance the endurance tosustain that pace is the trick and I'm in the same boat but, I haven't a clue how to improve this!. Well done to you both.

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner 21 день тому

      @@keithbowden4248 Thanks Keith. Yes, the HR was high but this was a hard effort and that pace is close to my 1 mile PB pace right now so it was to be expected. I am doing interval training to try and improve my resilience at these paces. Short very fast intervals help build strength and efficiency at faster speeds and improve your max aerobic capacity, and longer threshold type intervals will help increase your ability to sustain hard efforts for long periods of time. Both should be shorter and faster than your target distance and pace. This is how I trained for the half marathon and its made a huge improvement to my 5k performance already. We filmed a specific 5km session tonight that we will hopefully be sharing next week. I am no coach, but I hope this helps. Thanks for watching 🙂

    A PB for both of you, that must feel great, well done. 5:35/km up the infamous Cardiac Hill is impressive. Liking the branded headband very much, how easy is it to get things like that made up? You both seem to have a solid block of training lined up 4 then 5 runs per week, that's commitment! Alexandra Parkrun, I think it just edges South Manchester as a PB course because it's all tarmac even though there is the hairpin you do twice which costs you. My PB is at SM but I was at Alexandra today with a friend who did a 19:02. Mine was, well, a bit of a disaster if you saw my Strava, all to be revealed in the video next Thursday:)

That's really unfortunate, but I look forward to seeing your video. Showing only the good bits is far from authentic and I know I for one appreciate seeing how people overcome a problem. You my friend, did a great job of overcoming it and getting to the end. I also have to say it was lovely to see Becky do part of the intro. I know in your earlier video you mentioned that you would probably be doing all the talking, but the camera loves you both in equal measure. Spot on guys, keep up the great work and look forward to the next video 😊

      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      Thank you Craig! Becky actually volunteered to introduce the video. She's been building the confidence to do it for a few weeks 😀 You are spot on though. It's so easy to cherry pick and only show the successes on a platform like this, but that's not the reality of running. We all have good days and bad and it's important to make sure those people that might still be learning to run or building their fitness that we go through the same struggles as them some times. The key is show how we approach those challenges to come back stronger. It was great to host you for our 50th volunteer. I'm glad we were able to make it happen. I look forward to us being able to meet up again sometime soon.

    Great video Matt, watched the whole thing, liked the kit run through, could see it was very emotional for you in the last few miles, me too😊Congratulations on the huge PB, that was such a brilliant day for us all I think😀 What make was that waist band with the pockets btw? I ran in cushioned shoes too, glad I did😊

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      Thank you, Andy. 💙 It really was an emotional ride especially in the last mile. I don't know if we were close to you out on the course or whether they had it on repeat or something but I saw you mention somewhere that you passed someone playing Gettin' Jiggy With It out on the course, and I distinctly remember hearing that out there. 🎵🎶 It was a fantastic day though and the support out on the course was brilliant and that's exactly why we've signed up again next year 😀 I think if you are injury prone then decent supportive/stable shoes are a non negotiable. There's no point running a good race if you then cant run for the next 6 months. The Saucony Tempus are a great stability shoe that can pick up the pace though. Haven't tried the new ones yet, so hopefully they haven't changed them too much. The waist belt is by Build&Fitness, available on Amazon. They've recently done the ones with a zip and they also have one without. I have one of each and they're both very good and about half the price of some other brands. Be sure to check the sizing guide. For me it was pretty accurate. Thanks for watching, and well done again for your race effort. Can't wait to see how you get on next year 💪🏃‍♂️🏃

      @@TheRegularRunner Hi Matt, the Will Smith track gave me a massive lift, I remember dancing (sorta) then I jumped up in the air, crowd were cheering me on, I’ll never forget that. I reckon you were really close by, I’m assuming from your mention of 9:35 being called up meant your start time was 10:05, my Garmin recorded a 9:54 start and 2:22 but you were 2:04 I think so I think we were close at that point, say 11 miles😀. I’m about to buy new shoes but I’m a big Mizuno fan so might go Wave Rider 28🤔Thanks rd the belt, I had 3 gels onboard tightly backed into a Decathlon waist belt, not ideal but ok.

      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      Yes we must have been really close by then! The crowd and the vibe was great in that last couple of miles. It was just what we needed after we both suffered with knee pain from about mile 8. So glad you managed to get that lift to get you over the line mate.

      Thanks Graham! For a long time I had felt like I had a lot of room to improve my HM time. I really do put this down to the last 10 weeks of solid structured training, and I aim to continue that and keep getting better. During the course of this block I matched or beat almost every PB on my Strava up to the half marathon, so maybe the next step is to see how much room there is to improve in the shorter faster stuff? Thank you for watching!

    Perfectly executed run and video. Honestly, this was so good to see. Strava gave a pace and overall time, but the video is where the story was at and I was all in. Well done to you both, so happy for you and look forward to seeing whats next :o)

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      Thank you Craig! Your ongoing support for us and for the channel has been really valuable as we put our running experience out there for everyone to see. Strava only shows the end result, but the reality is that this was the longest, fastest and most challenging run either of us have ever managed to get through. By mile 8 I was really feeling tired and around mile 11 we both started to suffer with knee pain (I think some serious S&C is on the cards!!). We kept pushing on though and I'm so happy that we hit the goal that we set out. Hope you're doing good mate. If you do make it to Heaton this weekend, we'll see you there and if not, hope you have a parkrun return.

    To be fair, it looked like you were continually going uphill too. Lister Park Bradford Parkrun used to go one way then the other and then switched back again. This course reminded me of that because when they switched it it went from a quick sharp climb and a long downhill to a forever climb and quick descent. Thankfully its back the original way, but it completely changed the run. Be interesting if they did switch it round. Great run all the same :o)

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      Cheers Craig. I sent the video to them before publishing and firstly they were shocked at the gradient map but then they've also hinted they might let us run it in reverse at some point. Apparently they did it in reverse once before and the short sharp uphill caught everyone out, so I don't know if my suggestion will make me any friends 🤣 I'll probably get a better time though, so swings and roundabouts 😋

    It's great to have an option to run on a Sunday, lots of people can never make a saturday

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      Absolutely Stu. The option to run on a Saturday or a Sunday (or both) is great. These guys organise a load of runs, a lot of them on Thursday evenings as well as Saturdays and Sundays. The other thing I like too is their other runs aren't about the time. Instead the focus is on getting out and exploring and doing that in whichever way suits your abilities best. I've got plans in mind to get some of the longer events covered on the channel in the not too distant future. Thanks for watching. Hope the ironman training is going well.

    Is it muddy? I can’t do Saturdays but have always considered doing this on a Sunday

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      It used to be very muddy by the weir but the council have just resurfaced the path to deal with it and this was the first time running on the new path. There are still some puddles and a little bit of mud on the tow path but it is a lot better than it was and you shouldn't get covered in it. If you do plan to go sometime, let me know and we'll come down and join you. 🏃🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ The cafe there is really good too. ☕ 🍰

    The montage worked out well, should get a good amount of footage next week. I'll say it on strava too of course but the best of luck to you both you really deserve to get the time you're after. Really enjoying the videos so don't pack it in after the half 😂

    • @TheRegularRunner
      @TheRegularRunner Місяць тому

      Thankyou so much for all of the ongoing support, not just for the channel but for our running journey in general. I'm really happy with how the montage turned out 🙂 I owe you for reminding me about the interval record option. And don't worry. I'm not planning on stopping. I need to get my money's worth out of the camera and microphone gear I've bought - in fact, I hope the sound quality in our vlogs is now much better compared to a few weeks ago. We've got another half booked in December (which is actually one we deferred when I couldn't run) and we've also just signed up to a 10 mile trail run in January (not a race so much as an adventure, but I still hope to document it). I've also got a couple of ideas swirling in mind for things to hopefully bring to the channel next year, not to mention more parkruns, one of which we owe you a meet up at. Thanks again as always, Craig!

      Thank you Craig. It really is an enjoyable course and one well worth anyone trying I think. I reckon on fresh legs I have another PB in me, but that will probably have to wait until I'm through this training block 🤣 Becky is having to listen carefully to her body and go easy when required to make sure she doesn't aggravate anything. And I can confirm that I did the 12 miles tonight and ticked off that 50km week for the first time. At the end of the day though, we run together, so if Becky has a tough race day then I will stay with her regardless. As ever, thanks for your support mate.
