Restoring the Water Cycle to Regenerate Earth
Restoring the Water Cycle to Regenerate Earth
A talk by Zach Weiss
Founder, Elemental Ecosystems
Life runs on water, as does the biosphere of our planet. Around the world human mismanagement has led to disruptions in the hydrological cycle leading to extreme climate, drought, flood, fire, reduced quality of life, crop failure, and eventually water and food scarcity and civil unrest. The root cause of these problems is not only preventable but also reversible - all it requires is a paradigm shift around our relationship with water and land.
SPEAKER EXPERTISE
Watershed Restoration Practitioner - Protégé of revolutionary Austrian farmer Sepp Holzer, Zach is the first person to earn Holzer Practitioner certification directly from Sepp - through a rigorous two-year apprenticeship.
ABOUT THIS SPEAKER
Blending a unique combination of systems thinking, empathy, and awareness, Zach created Elemental Ecosystems to provide an action-oriented process to improve clients' relationship with their landscape.
Elemental Ecosystems is an ecological development contracting and consulting firm specializing in watershed restoration and ecosystem regeneration. The firm’s work includes Aquaculture, Agroforestry, Water Retention Landscapes, Terrace Systems, Spring Development, Natural Building, and more.

Let me say, this have been the best presentation on fungi on UA-cam, I have seen, since learning about it and it’s importance. Everyone else that present a presentation about this topic almost always repeat what the last presenter said, and something’s doing it multiple times. Question, can you recommend the most updated book on, the different fungi to support different plants species?

Great stuff. But yet. Even before studies, to the naked eye observable fungi has been observed breaking down decaying wood when the conditions have been right so it should not be especially surprising that soil microbiology can also sustain fungal activity below the surface. It is interesting to confirm that fungal activity can be very active below ground helping to decompose and perhaps for other purposes wherever the conditions can be right. But more interesting to me is that it can be contradictory to note the benefits of microbial activity in soil including fungal activity at the same time saying that certain fauna that feeds on the same microbial activity including earthworms is also very beneficial. How should we balance the benefits when both are supposed to be beneficial? is the mycelial network beneficial but fauna that feeds on it more beneficial? What is lost if the mycelial network is consumed, does endophytes which purportedly travel from one plant system to another over the mycelial network still happen or is that stymied... Or can endophytes be transported by other means like by earthworms themselves? Or, can endophytes survive the earthworm gut and merely reproduce or are redeposited some distance away? I wonder how essential is the mycelial network to soil health, or if other alternatives can exist to provide similar functionality like earthworms.

Great lecture! I'm quite into biology and learned a lot! Especially the ubiquity of fungi, even in human bodies, damn that really shifts my idea of their role in the big picture. Also that their presence is much more permanent than I thought, not just to process what we would call 'waste' to then disappear again, but in continuous mutualistic roles with plants and even animals. Way too often I encounter pseudoscience in the permaculture community, it is refreshing to hear someone talk about a topic they actually understand pretty thoroughly and not just from anecdotes. I'm gonna look up more of this guy's content, and thanks for sharing!

@@origintoinfinity sure, the easiest way is to just watch ua-cam.com/video/jIMpjh_7-bw/v-deo.html There is an agenda behind climate change, the biggest thing is that it has become quite religious. The people pushing for climate change seeking to force the entire world to take off Sunday as a global day of rest. Unfortunately, my Bible tells me God commanded the 7th day be taken, Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown. As I read the Bible and understand the issues, climate change is what will bring in the end time scenario spoken of in revelation. I know that sounds pretty far out there, but if the glove fits then probably best to pay attention. If you really want to understand how climate change plays into the second coming and all that, I could recommend some video series (it’s a lot of lectures but I actually quite enjoy watching them). Look up Walter Veiths Total Onslaught series.

@@origintoinfinity also look up the green sabbath project- they have at least some 50 or 60 governments all signed up and agreed to intentionally take Sunday off as a day of rest- “for the people” - a rest from industry. And don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with wanting to take a rest day. It’s just that I, as a 7th day Adventist, have been told since I was little that the Sabbath would be the key issue in the end times, and now as an adult I see what they are saying...it takes some study to get into it. But I believe it to be true. I think climate change will be the vehicle used to bring in the biblical end time events, and the tell tale sign is the anti- sabbath laws that will eventually come with Sunday day off. The reason for this is that the sabbath is not so much a matter of a day but a matter of who’s authority you acknowledge; do you acknowledge Gods authority simply at his word? Sunday is the venerable day of the sun for sun worshipers, and is one of the reasons the Catholic Church gather on Sunday - because the pope himself is Antichrist. The Pope wears the fish mitre hat, which tells me he’s a preset of Dagon (fish god), he also bears the Maltese cross which tells me he’s a priest of Malta, and he carry’s around a staff with a crucified Jesus on a bent crucifix - a design by Anton Levy church of Satan founder, intended to symbolize Jesus as perpetually crucified. The point is, the position of the Pope politically and literally is that of Antichrist. It can be hard to believe if you aren’t intimately familiar with the situation, hard to understand if you don’t know what you are looking for. Point is, the Popes day is Sunday. I don’t follow the Pope, i think he is blasphemous and I intend of keeping the word of God and His law as my ultimate guide in life. Not that keeping the law saves you, rather you are saved by faith, but keeping the law comes as a result of salvation. That’s important. Jesus does for the sake of the law, not to banish it but to uphold it. So shall I uphold it as well, right? Hope this makes sense. Climate change is bad science and will be used to usher in the tribulation era. Sounds like a movie 🍿 but i believe it to be true.

I'm guessing that hot arid conditions are mainly surface environmental factors and that the below surface environment can be much different. So, no matter what the surface might be like, if there is sufficient carbon and moisture, the temperate conditions below the surface should support microbial activity including fungus and then it's not a matter if but how much activity happens.

Troops patrolling through the woods of Kentucky at night would break open decomposing branches to release light. Any chance it involves nitrogen fixing bacteria? Would be a neat trick to get the building blocks of protein in a food unlimited place.

I did not expect that my country, Russia, would be set as a good example. We have many small producers, because this way you can avoid taxes and raider seizure. There is no work in the countryside and people start growing something for sale in order to survive. But no one pays attention to the quality of products, their safety. An acre of coppiced hardwood might qualify for a climate grant, yield the heat for a purpose, and be part of a network by selling the char to another local group for value (and bio) added.
