Hey, I'm Flynn from Wales, UK.
Since May 2023 I've started to get into mountain biking. From the get go I thought I'd record my progress for my own benefit but to also to hopefully push or entertain anyone who is willing to watch my videos :)

4 OUT OF 5 JUMPS CLEARED 🙌 | MOUNTAIN VIEW BIKE PARK | BEGINNER AT A BIKE PARK | DAY 14
After over a month of not being at Mountain View Bike Park in Caerphilly, I actually did a personal best 🥳
Never underestimate a rider being in front of you, you may not realise it but it helps you so much! Thanks to these two who offered the invite to go down the red trail.

I'm honestly unsure how this is going to go as a video, but I like trying new things! I say that this has to be my worst day so far, which is was. I felt uncomfortable whilst riding the entire time, like I hadn't been on a bike in my life, but at the same time the video has helped me a lot to realise what I could improve a lot on 🙂 flynnrow

One thing you should know about me from my titles is that I never do clickbait, the title actually means something that is in the video, and this time is no different. I haven't been to a lot of bike parks, and I haven't been on a lot of trails... But Launchpad, one of the blue trails in Forest of Dean, is B-E-A-UTIFUL. I wish I could have stopped and just looked at it. The GoPro doesn't do it ...

What a day this was! You know, apart from my bottle of water flying out of my cage, sitting on the uplift when it decided to rain, ONLY during the uplift mind... Oh and crashing, yes... That as well. Instagram: flynnrow Twitter: twitter.come/flynnrow

So instead of going to a bike park I ventured out with Jarryd to find some local trails, and we were not disappointed 😍 Because of the downpour of rain the day before, the trail was extremely... Slippery? Anyway, check out this beaut of a spot. Instagram: flynnrow Twitter: twitter.come/flynnrow

So this video is a bit of a shorter one. I feel like you're all going to end up getting sick at seeing the same trails over and over again but it's my comfort bike park at the moment 😅 Each time I go here I'm feeling progress no matter how small, which is a win in my books! 00:00 - Intro Search "Flynnrow" on.. - Twitter - Instagram - Threads - Tiktok (I don't use much)

In this video I felt like at some points it finally clicked on how to get around those corners / berms... It felt so much easier! Still need to get to the point of doing it naturally but we'll get there! I'm not going to put any time stamps because this is ALL Twister (blue trail) because of the wind I didn't want to risk going on the jumps (apart from one time and it was tough to get any speed...

It was red all day! I went to see the two black jump lines, Evil Twin and 7th Heaven, I don't know about you but they're massive to me (a person who hasn't really seen any jump lines in person before!) As I'm writing this I'm thinking I should really get into learning the basics before attempting much more of Jammin'. I'm having fun on it but I'm not going to improve much without nailing the ba...

Are you still riding ?? No vids for a year☹️
Hello a game I think you’d like is called The Turing Test It’s a good puzzle game,
Are you still riding ?
Haha! You are a legend! Just be yourself!
When you talk about Philly traffic, I believe 90% of the US population does not understand. I am from Indiana but I thought the Southeastern Transportation Authority will let you take your Mountain bike on the subway/bus. I am sure no one would steal it from the city of brotherly love.
I’m a guy in his late 40s trying to get into mountain biking properly - my 16 year old son is on his bike all the time - but while I love Countdown and Launchpad I don’t have the guts to try the red trails in the FoD so fair play to you for trying !
straight forward, honest and enjoyable! few basic tips for the tech sections: 1- get your speed under control BEFORE you roll in, braking on rocks n roots is a bad idea. 2- LOOSEN UP! your arm n legs are so stiff through nerves that the bike is off balance 3- avoid the leaning back. instead, adopt the central/neutral arms bent "attack position"
I am newbie also but she seemed to be going way to fast in some of those turns. I think she needs to use those brakes more.
you should try forest of dean. you'd love it there
Great video, I’ve not been there yet but hoping to go sometime this year.
Way to go, hope you still riding and having fun progressing. I took a few mates new to. Mtb to fod for a weekender in May, great place to progress.
I don't think I've been out on my bike in over a year :( I will get back out on it before the end of 2024! It certainly is a great place to progress, it's absolutely beautiful! I hope you guys enjoyed :)
Berm
Hey, are you still riding? I am from the forest of dean and love count down to launch pad. I have been riding on and off for 2 years. My anxiety gets the better of me every time. I can't progress from flowy to tech. I see a bit of tech or a drop off, and I freak out 🙈 and throw my toys out the pram 😂 It would be cool to see you in the FOD again @flynnrow
Hello! I think most of my comments over the last couple of months begin with "sorry for the late reply" 😂 I'm not currently riding as I've broken my toe and I'm waiting for it to heal, but I can't use that excuse for why I haven't gone out on the bike for over 6 months! I will get back to it, I just need to push myself to get back out there, even in the poorer weather 🌧 You have Forest of Dean at your doorstep then? That's awesome, I've only been once but some of the trails there are great! People with confidence must love the flow of some of those blue trails. I get what you mean, the fear of falling off really stints your progression doesn't it? Especially on more tech areas, you just got to start small and go from there, sooner or later you'll forget why you were even worried :) Does FOD have a small trail area that you can practice drop offs? :) Definitely! I'll get back there one day, when I'm back on the bike that is. I hope you're still enjoying mountain biking!
Done the blue trail loved it
It's something else isn't it!
Sometimes you’ve just gotta go full soeed
I get what you mean, although it's difficult to when you're new to it, but once you know it I can image it would be amazing! (I know my replies are SO late, I do apologise!!)
You need to return because you could do lots of those features. It’s easier when it’s not blind
I certainly will, especially when it's dry!
I 've just happened across you, and totally enjoying your honesty which is so often missing from other MTB Videos. I also love that you are going back an retrying difficult obstacles. As a Mountain Biker of 35yrs (I know!), the only advice i would offer is, when re-trying a feature - go further back than a yard or so, take it back as far as you need to get your feet on the pedals and balanced . This will also give you more opportunity to get some speed up and FLOW the feature better. Well done and keep riding thru the winter!
Just like every other comment here I'm replying to, I'm sorry for the extremely late reply, I should really keep on top of them :( You have done mountain biking for 35 years? Wow that's amazing! You must really enjoy it :D Thank you for the kind words, to see so many people enjoy my videos blows my mind! And I still receive messages to this day even though I haven't been on my bike for well over 6 months (I recently broke my toe so I'm waiting for that to heal before I push myself back out again). Thanks for the advice, I know what you mean about starting a little further back. I panic trying to get my feet on the pedals then it just ruins any potential flow to the feature 😢
Well you have come a long way in a short time. Keep up the good work and ride with buddy's
Aw thank you so much, I'm so sorry for the late reply, I haven't been keeping up with UA-cam and I really should!
You need to check out the new jump trails in mv
Your doing amazing. Even stopping and trying features again and pushing your self on to do them is inspiring. Body amour will make you feel safe and get over your fear of hurting yours self. It’s all about having fun and going all over the country to different locations. Go at your own pace speed will come over time.
Thank you so much :) I definitely need to look into some body armour, it won't make me "too" confident, but will help ease my mind a little for the eventual crash haha! I haven't been out in well over a month so I know I'm going to be a little rusty. The weather is starting to get worse as the winter arrives but I'm going to try to keep getting out 💪
I shut down myself for the winter unless it’s a rare day. 😁 Even the pros crash we all learn from the mistakes to get better. If you can have a look at LEATT AIRFLEX-RANGE I use fox racing amour my self can’t remember which model tho. Went to fortwilliam down hill track felt safer with it on as there’s big rocks everywhere lol. If you can, get a cloth one no a plastic type just for the comfort. Happy trailing
Fantastic work!! I have been biking on and off for years locally to wear I live but next week doing my first ever bike park visit. Got a few nerves but we all have to start somewhere
If you've already been how did it go?! Did the nerves disappear when you were there for a bit? I understand that feeling... Mostly because I don't want to be in other peoples way :(
MV bike park, not dare valley 😉 good riding dude!
Aw my silly mistakes and I'm only now catching up to ready this!! 😂
I'm local to you... I live on this trail :) I'd love to ride with you some time if you fancy girlie company, coffee's and a chat.. I ride at Bike Park Wales a lot and you would LOVE it there!! I GUARANTEE IT!!
Sorry for the late reply, I posted the video and haven't really been on my channel since!! I'm only now getting back to all of the comments 😣 That's awesome! And for sure it would be great to have some company there 😁 what trails to do you tend to go on at MV?? Aw I've love to go to Bike Park Wales when I'm more confident, it's a big and busy place. I barely handled Dirt Farm 😂
@@flynnrow Awwww you are doing awesome and I reckon looking at your videos, you would easily get down the blues at BPW... I don't ride MV. I prefer BPW and given the choice I go to BPW instead :) I'm a blue rider mainly and just do it for fun rather than for the gnar haha.... Give me a shout and I'd love to join you on a ride...
😍😍💗💗🥰🥰
awesome to see you clear it flynn, great job!. I can only imagine how much it helps riding with people or even just talkin or joining along with random people along the way like you did. last time i was at my trail, a nice guy struck up conversation with me after we did a steep hill climb. I was soaked with more sweat from that like 10 min conversation than i was from the entire 24 miles of cycling i did that day. stoopid anxiety brain 😰
Proud of you! Keep on sending it Flynn!!
Aw thank you :D I'll have to get back out soon, it's been well over a month
Hey, awesome! Loving the great ending with the jump clearings. 😁 Looks like fun, and I'm happy you ended your session on a good note.
Hey! Thank you 😁 I was so happy with clearing it. I haven't been out in a WHILE though so it will be like I'm starting all over again ahah!
@@flynnrow We'll be eagerly awaiting to watch you brush the dust off, so to speak!
you need to stay more confident thru the berms. keep speed up when you start dont break.
For sure, I feel like my back wheel is going to skid away, if that makes sense?? The confidence will come 💪
yeeow! good shit! i just ended up with concussion this weekend, but thankfully we have helmets and i wont need to eat every meal of my life thru a straw. good times! \m/
Damn, I hope you're doing ok!! It's been 4 weeks so I hope so!
@@flynnrow yep all good! Am into practice for a race in December now. 🤘
Great stuff! Well done and I think it shows that riding with others really does help. When I'm back in Bristol next month gunna head straight to Mountain View, looks a great place for me to progress also. Keep it going, chill and enjoy.
Oh 100%! Sometimes it's nice to be by yourself so you can go at your own pace but other times (especially like in this video) it helps to give you that little more knowledge and confidence about the speed you need to go to achieve something :D Did you end up going to Mountain View? I haven't been out in so long :(
Fork and shock set up needs looking at too watching through he videos your fork looks way too hard and too firm on the compression and rebound i would highly recommend you go to a local bikeshop and ask them to help you get the set up closer to what you need and then you will see your riding improve greatly as the bike will feel way more planted and have way more grip , great video and for 4 months your doing awesome it just takes time to get the bike right :)
Thanks for the advice, I'll take that on board. It would be good to talk to someone from a local bike shop about what I need to keep an eye on in regards to the suspension. It seems like there's so much that needs to be adjusted for it to suit "you" you know? Which I don't mind, I'd rather get it right! Thank you, I haven't been out in over a month, I'll have to start from scratch all over again soon 😂
My bike shop of choice is Don Skene cycles in Cardiff, really good set of lads that will sort your suspension out, some of the lads race also, so they definitely know what they’re talking about. Been in business for over 70 years so not a new shop.
Ure doing well ive bin riding 2 years im getting fit but my skills r crap thers so much to learn
Thank you :) I totally agree, there's so much to learn when it comes to mountain biking that it is a little overwhelming but with time, patience and taking it one bit at a time, it will all come naturally, and yeah the fitness you get form it is great :D
Sick video! Those trails look so rad 🤘 proper jealous!
Thanks! The trails are fantastic, especially if you're experienced. I highly recommend going. The only thing I found a little difficult was the interchanging trails, I'd be on a blue then blink twice and you've accidentally turned onto a black 😂
@@flynnrow definitely will hit them up if I ever find myself in Wales!
I wish I had more gravel like flow trails here where I live. In my videos I show case just how punishing some of the Rooty technical trails are. Don't beat yourself up too much I too am very self critical while riding, sometimes to my detriment. Breathe and allow your nervous system to calm down, it's the key to flowing with the trails and letting the bike dance over obstacles. Just some stuff that's really been helping me from a fellow beginner. Cheers!
Hey fellow beginner! 👋 Tech trails are my downfall, it's a massive mental barrier I need to break when it comes to roots and rocky terrain. I appreciate the advice, breathing is something I definitely need to focus more on when riding haha! I just checked our a bit of your newest video, looks like a nice trail, but a lot of uphill if I'm right?? Also congratulations on your first crash, welcome to the club 😅
@@flynnrow Glad to be a part of the crashed club haha. Just keep trying with the technical trails and don’t give up. I stuggle a lot with skinnies currently and I’m hitting those over and over with low to the ground ones till I move to harder trails. Yes the action camera does not do a good job of showing the uphills, but, they are there, and they are brutal haha. To most watching it probably looks like I’m struggling over flat terrain but that is not true. This hobby is absolutely amazing and addictive so keep at it!!!
The progress you've made is impressive! I don't believe that anyone has mentioned this. The second crash you had happened because of a "case", meaning you landed on the uphill side of the second hill of a double. For doubles you can either try to clear both of the lips which requires boosting the jump a little more than you did by loading the bike with your legs coming up to the first jump's lip, or you can deaden the jump by absorbing some of the energy at the lip of the first jump with your legs like you would on a pump track which will cause the jump to land shorter. In either case I feel like you had good speed for the features right before your crash and you did an excellent job of assessing yourself quickly then getting off the trail to further assess and collect yourself to continue to the bottom of the trail. Major kudos to you and your physical and mental toughness to jump back on the bike.
Thank you! Dirt Farm really pushed my small skillset to the limit 😅 Thanks for explaining that, I didn't even notice that I landed on the second hill of the double! I'll definitely have to go back to check, but everything you said makes sense. I've come across doubles before and I haven't had the experience with them often to figure out how to handle them so I just absorb and move on. I had to get back down one way and my legs and arms were still moving so the bike was the quickest way haha!
I love your insight. Sometimes we just have those bad mind days, ya know?
Aw thank you, I try to take what I learn from other riders (whether that be in person or from videos), and yeah we all have them 🙂
Ouch you hurt the groin / box area 😬😂 Always good to see your progression on these videos, just don’t put pressure on yourself you have not been biking long, just keep at it and you will get naturally quicker and quicker. Some good advice and lessons will speed up the journey though. Enjoying the vids, keep it up I am a puddle dodger too, who wants to get soaked, not me!
I know! I should have just went with it and fell off completely instead of braking as hard as I did 😂 Yeah I know I need to go easier on myself, I just see some videos of other MTB UA-camrs and I think, "I want to do that 😮" haha! Glad to hear you're enjoying them, it's great I can provide entertainment whilst learning. Ahh a fellow puddle dodger!! 😅
We all have those days, that for whatever reason we just aren't feeling it or the heads not in it, but - getting out and riding will always be better than not - from one noob to another! I've found that by just trying to have fun more the progress comes naturally and one of the best bits of advice I've been given by a local shredder was "you'll go faster and get better as soon as you're not scared to crash" 😂 enjoy!
Hello fellow noob! How long have you been riding for? I totally agree with getting out is better than not, even if it's just to practice the basics, learning wheelies, manuals, the figure 8 etc :) 100%, the fear of crashing I think is in the back of most peoples minds, and definitely holds back a lot of progression (speaking for myself as well!) Thank you, I hope you're enjoying too 😁
@@flynnrow it'll be 2 years in Feb, and absolutely loving it. It's probably the best thing I've picked up and the benefits it's had on my mental health are immeasurable, it's so good! Keep at it and have fun is the main thing, the progress will just happen. Riding with mates who are better is also the best way I think and I watch a lot of local riders channels to watch lines on local tracks etc, have learned a lot doing that for sure. 🤘
Awsome job, keep it up, you earned a new subscriber.
Thank you so much :D!
Are u riding in crouch ? or in stand up possiion cuz that makes a huge different in riding.
That's actually a good question, I think I stand up instead of crouching depending on how comfortable I am with the trail. Like if it's new I probably stand up a lot more
@@flynnrow well riding in stand up position is much more comfortable for knees and basically to all body and less demanding. And unless u are riding a enduro or downhill. You can ride everything in stand up position and just add some correct lean movement foward and back in flows. it will much increese your speed and also some more confident.
Perhaps you were uncomfortable because you got catapulted right into your lady bits? That would take the steam out of most people, I imagine! Your puddle-avoidance technique is very well honed. 😁 I felt your riding was fine--probably just getting used to a new place. New things are generally uncomfortable at first. Love the progression and your narration! These videos are like little Christmas presents.
Haha you know what, you're probably right! I struggled a little afterwards so yeah I think that might have just ruined the rest of my rides 😂 I overthink a lot and I critique so much of what I do, I really need to go easier on myself, it doesn't have to be drastic improvement each time! Aw that's awesome 😁 I'm glad to bring approximately 30 minutes of entertainment to people one every week / every other week 😃
My Wife and I have been watching your videos since #2 was about 2 days old. We both see a marked improvement in your riding! Talking about the tire pressure do you know if you are riding Tubeless or Inner tubes? You can ride a tubeless softer than an inner tube, when tubes are too low you have a really good chance at a Pinch flat ending your ride early. Beyond all of that, thanks for Chronicling your journey, it's made my wife and i realize how much we miss getting out on the trails, you've inspired us to get back out there ❤
Your comment honestly made me smile, thank you for the kind words and for watching since the second video :) That's actually a good question, I have no clue and will have to take a look and keep that information in mind for the future. There's so much to keep in mind but I'm sure it will all come second nature down the line. Aw that's amazing! I really hope you two do eventually get back out on the bikes! Let me know where you end up going, I love to know where people end up riding. Have fun :D!
Don't use tubeless until ur really confident riding and doing basic mechanical repairs... don't get into tubeless vs inner tube. Ull lose yourself in a rabbit hole and waste time wondering TL vs inners. Ride as much as u can. And have fun. Upgrade ur tyres, invest in a dropper seat post if u haven't already. My wife watches ur videos too!! Keep it up!
@@harimathur2191 agreed Entirely, my point was more to make the distinction known, As I ended up with a Pinch flat because a TL rider recommended I drop my pressure way too low and ended a ride early 😕
Great video, always enjoy seeing your progression and look forward to your uploads. Where has been your favourite place to ride so far?
Aw thank you, it honestly blows my mind that people enjoy the content but I'm glad some do! Hm, I'd say Mountain View Bike Park (my regular), I think it's because it's such a good place to hone your skills, and it really beginner friendly. The other places I've been have been... Not overwhelming, but just new to me. Although I'm sure Dirt Farm would be so much fun for someone who is extremely comfortable and skilled on their bike! What about you??
btw beautiful view, we don't get clouds and green countryside like that over here. Spectacular!
Yeah it's beautiful once you stop and take it in 😁
stick a shin pad down there for future hahahaha
Honestly I should have just went to the ground instead of breaking and shunting me forward 🤣
Omg, I never thought I see someone else 'struggling' (you're doing sooo fine) on a MTB! I too get like anxiety while biking, but watching your content really helps! Thanks ❤❤ i can so relate to the crying brakes 😂
Sorry for the late reply, I'm only now bringing myself to sit down after almost 2 weeks of being absent from UA-cam :( but thank you so much for the message! And I'm really glad my content helps. I make these videos for personal progress, and I like to edit videos so I thought I'd combine the two and show others the beginner stages, I hope it does resonate with others and show them that they're not alone :) How long have you been riding for??
Confidence building :), love to see it, we went there saturday just gone, amaaaazing place, def going back soon, mountain view is a great place to build confidence for places like this, keep up the good work
I'm awfully late at replying to some messages sorry :( What trail is one of your favourite there?? I adore Launchpad and I only went on it once! 😂 Oh yeah Mountain View is my "comfort blanket" it's where I go when I feel nervous or want to work on some things (especially my jumps), I highly recommend that place for beginners :)
Finn, well done girl your doing great i OFTEN talk myself through skills sections and i do a LOT of off piste riding (ie Trail blazing or cutting my own trail) and i often have to talk myself through bits, well done girl remember if your in berms and turns always think wherever your head goes or leads your body will follow so keep looing in the direction you want to go. Sizing the bike is always important and also get someone to help you with "Sag" and what presures you want your shock and forks at that really helps and makes the bike a lot more forgiving.
It's great to hear that other people talk to themselves during certain sections they're trying to work through, it's good to be your own "hype man" to push you through areas :) I definitely need to take that advice on board, I find it difficult to look at where I'm going to go, I tend to always look at the front of my tyre. I'm pretty late at replying to a lot of messages so I do apologise but I really appreciate the messages.
