How hard Can It Be!
Приєднався 28 бер 2013
I’ve been a farmer all my life, its in the blood you might say but so is anything with four wheels and an engine. For the last 20 years or so I’ve been fixing up pre 1920’s cars in my farm workshop but 10 years ago at the age of 46 I started racing cars!
This channel will follow my progress preparing and trying to race a 1967 Brabham bt21 in 2024 which is also the 60th Anniversary of these one litre formula 3 racing cars.
There will also be some old car bits and some farming mixed in as and when anything of interest takes my fancy!!

wednesday testdrive
So today we were up in Lincoln and I was allowed out on my own to test-drive what I think is probably my favourite set of wheels.
I'll be back with some racing soon so keep watching and don't forget to Subscribe

Still Screaming at 60!! - The 60th Anniversary of the One litre F3 Screamers - 1964 -2024
Переглядів 1,6 тис.14 днів тому
2024 was the 60th Anniversary of the One Litre Formula 3 screamers and members of the One-Litre F3 racing Association www.onelitref3.uk were joined by the European members of Historic F3 1000cc European trophy www.f3historic.com for a full on season of racing on genuine period circuits. At many of these circuits we were running unsilenced to recreate the authentic "screamers" song experience. T...
Looking forward to Spa by looking back

In 2025 the historic formula 3 screamers will be racing at Spa Francorchamps at the spa 6 hour meeting, we will have our own grid of 30 cars and it’s something I’m really excited about. I’ve recently been looking back at a few past races and came across this one , it’s when I first started racing single seaters and I couldn’t believe my luck to actually get to race my Classic formula Ford 1600 ...

Pre Christmas Evening workshop - Model T Ford, Raising it from its Slumber
Переглядів 417Місяць тому
On Christmas morning we have a family tradition of driving to Church in the Model T Ford. Unfortunately the last time the model t was used was last Christmas so tonight we wake the car up from its slumber by draining the old petrol and refilling with new and changing the engine oil. I’ve got lots of projects in the workshop at the moment so we have a sneaky peak at a couple of 1903 model A Cadi...
Fitting a dynostart to a veteran car
Переглядів 550Місяць тому
Today we fit a starter to a 1904 Franklin. This is brass era car with an air cooled 4 cylinder engine of around 10 hp. Whilst the engine is fairly easy to start manually using the starting handle is a bit of a faff on this car so the owner has asked me to fit a dynastart. This type of starter is usually found on marine engines and as well as starting the engine it also a dynamo so when the engi...
Caterham K series engine and gearbox - putting it back into the car
Переглядів 5092 місяці тому
So after rebuilding the gearbox it was just a case of mating it back onto the engine and putting it back into the car. There were a few things I was concerned about, aligning the prop shaft back into the tail housing and remembering to put the exhaust manifold back as I installed the engine. As it happened it all went surprisingly well and I was able to drive the car out of the Workshop.
Saturday Workshop - tool storage using Shadow foam

A friend of mine mentioned that he was impressed that I always seem to have the right tool at hand. This is because I have transformed my tool storage using Shadowfoam in my toolbox. Check out @JonaShone to see what it's all about.
Caterham type 9 gearbox rebuild
Переглядів 4092 місяці тому
in this video you can see all the pitfalls of rebuilding a type 9 gearbox when your making it up as you go along. I couldn't even count the number of times I put the synchros back together. There is definitely an order in which things go back together but I finally managed to get it all back together in one piece!!
Caterham - Type 9 gearbox stripdown
Переглядів 8732 місяці тому
Having got the Engine and gearbox out of the car, it was time to strip the gearbox down to its component parts and inspect for damage. Ive taken gearboxes apart before so Im not going in blind but each gearbox has an order in which they come apart and with a bit of a struggle and the help of a press the gearbox came apart and I found some damage.

I've just bought a ex racing Caterham Mega Grad to use on Trackdays outside of the racing season, Its the closest thing to a single seat racer that you can use on a trackway. Unfortunately whilst at Silverstone we managed to get it stuck in gear and in order to investigate I need to take the engine and gearbox out as access is next to non existent whilst in the car. Join me as take the engine o...
Broken iPad screen

Something a bit different this week, Jane’s the screen on Jane’s iPad cracked when it fell out of the car onto a pavement, so I bought a kit from Amazon for £25.99 and had a go at replacing it, I mean. How hard can it be! www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B086X8TVM9?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
Brabham BT21- Dijon Motors cup - Race 2 in car footage
Переглядів 1 тис.3 місяці тому
I've had problems getting my existing camera fitted to the car recording the races so in desperation I mounted a GoPro to the roll hoop so I could relive this absolutely fantastic circuit. Race 2 turned out to be a wet race and all of the grid were on dry tyres and Dry setup so when it started raining on the green flag lap it caused chaos at the first corner, luckily I managed to skirt around t...
Brabham BT21 - Dijon Motors Cup 2024 - 1000cc Formula 3 screamers

So this is the last race meeting of the historic Formula 3 Championship and what a place to end the season, I know I get accused of this after every race meeting but Dijon-Prenois Circuit is now one of my favourites. We had all weathers from cold winds, sunshine and rain but whatever the weather threw at us this was a good race weekend. I had never raced at this circuit before and it rewards br...

Still Screaming at 60 - Brands Hatch Super Prix trailer
Power source feeble and out date . Needs modern reliable upgrade.
The power unit seemed to be underperforming a bit. Down a cylinder? Maybe it's just past due for a rebuild and refresh?
Excellent review, when are you fitting a decent engine to it?
Not sure….I’m worried about invalidating the warranty and I’m not the main driver!!!
Many thanks to the racing Farmer for that lovely little video of the screamers , Hope Your 2025 season goes well and the fields earn You enough to buy the ever expensive tyres Mate ! We went for a year later with March 713 in 2003 (not a good move I'm afraid) Not the same exciting noises as the old pushrods .
Superb review of the year. Look forward to more in 2025 👍
Fabulous!
WELL DONE! Fabulous review of the season!
Brilliant ❤
I’m hoping to be sub 3 minutes, six years on and I think I’m a better driver. Others may disagree
Great footage. How quick will you be in the Brabham? Can't wait to get back out there in the Mallock!
Fun times, happy new year to you all
Excellent video again, well done Happy and healthy New Year Best wishes Nicholas and Yvonne
Happy New Year to you too, cheers Fabrizio -- like 1
Really enjoyable video to finish a insight into your busy life and super car collection, looking forward to 2025. Have a great Christmas & new year.
Fantastic. Great video and thanks for posting. The Brabham looks superb. Best of luck and cheers from Texas
I think it's a crime to modify this original car. The WAAAM Museum in Hood River, Oregon has a original 1909 Franklin and after some recent work on it, the engine starts easily with 2 pulls.
Thankyou for your comment, the modification is fitted using existing bolt holes in the chassis and can easily be removed to restore the car back to original. This car is not a museum exhibit and is regularly used on veteran car runs here in the uk and whilst it is true that the car starts easily, the procedure of getting the car ready to be started on the handle is rather protracted, especially when the car has stalled on a busy junction on uk roads. This is why the owner asked me to carry out this modification .
Another great video and enjoyable to watch.
Pleasure to find your channel and subscribed! You explained everything very well, and awesome to see we have matching Snap On boxes! Was so satisfying seeing you open that first draw, great layout mate and a top video all around!
Could you do a video but without the time lapse? This was Impossible to follow as an instruction on how its done.
I could do but it would be 3 hrs long!!
@martinwhitlock4527 Would be appreciated. Valuable when its time to overhaul the box. I have a "patient" in my garage that could do with a refresh. There isn't much about the type 9 on UA-cam.
I made a lot of mistakes when building the gearbox back up that Im not sure it would be of any use to you. my only advice is that you shouldn't be daunted by overhauling a gearbox, take lots of pictures as you dismantle and allow plenty of time. with a diagram of the order of the parts there really is only one way it will go back together.
@@martinwhitlock4527 Yes, I did a mazda rx8 6 speed last winter as my first ever gearbox. Had a manual though. Bearings etc was very expensive so I hope the type9 will be cheaper parts.
That sounds like the music you get on the phone when you're tenth in line to get a dentist appointment… ^^
I've got a type 9 in my MG Midget - you've almost convinced me to refurbish my gearbox
Epic !!
Needs the stand and the tube will make life so much easier Love your videos mate !
@@joey243win thank you. Love making them
Done a bit of work on different models in the past , nothing major though Being an Aussie these Brabhams have a special place in my heart
First watch and subscribed. Happy days.
All along I thought it was a Cosworth MAE !! Great series , where did you get the OE specs from thou?
Hard luck that, I was wondering where the oil was when you were pulling the engine/box out, as the std Type 9 centre casing has no drain plug and unless you seal up the rear output opening , all 3 litres pour out the back. I know as I have a K Series engine MG Midget 😊. I got some silicone rubber end caps off eBay to put over the end of the box
Do you refill before putting the gearbox back in? Does the oil only pour out when the gearbox is tilted and what oil do you use? I’m sure I’ll soon find out but prior knowledge is always welcome
Hi Martin, just wondering what happened to the MG?
MG is still in the queue, I probably won’t race it next year but I would like to get it up and running this winter
Really enjoy seeing these old cars racing ,a grandstand view of all the racing circuits from the arm chair.Well done you 😊.
Great little channel you're building here. Looking forward to your next season of racing already.
Great film, and good driving in difficult conditions. Wish I had been there in the Mallock to join in the fun!
I only joined you part way through the season, but really enjoyed watching these videos. Hope you do it all again next season.
Great start, avoiding the carnage!
Big apology to Jason, I called him Jeremy twice in this video
Great driving in the rain. Conditions looked marginal., but a fun track for sure. Thanks for posting. Cheers from Texas.
Great season been good to follow you with the videos.
Great racing , great cars , great era, lovely ladies too 😮
We want a Villeneuve Arnoux last lap.
One can see the adrenalin coursing through your veins Martin.
Excellent film, sorry not to be there with you!!
Already Looking forward to racing you next year
Can't wait to see the in-car footage, especially so from race 2.
You’re in luck because the only footage I have is of race 2.
@@martinwhitlock4527 Uh oh. It might be time to give the guy that mounts and maintains the camera a stern talking to, lol. 😉
Great weekend and well done on the results, its been a great season and have enjoyed following on UA-cam.
Think you for all your kind comments all season
It’s along journey, do you get subsidies to help or is it all down to you ? Looks lovely down there.
All down to me but it was worth the trip. Absolutely fantastic circuit
Looking forward to see you in Dijon, love your Videos 👍
Saw you at Castle Combe and really enjoyed the single seaters racing, albeit I got soaked on Sunday as, no doubt, you did as well! I'm new to your channel, so have you already done a video on the history of your Brabham BT21? In any event, thanks for your reporting and showing car maintenance/adjustments. Have you already talked about your car's history? Looking forward to viewing footage from Dijon.
Haven’t really got any early history as it went to America like a lot of these 1000cc screamers when f3 changed to 1600 cc. It could be one of 3 cars and we haven’t narrowed it down as yet. I did produce a video of when I rebuilt the car in 2021
Nice workshop and handy lift. No oil seal or grease cap on the bearings? No wonder the wet can get in. Be nice to see some in car footage at Dijon.
Loved this video, just reminded me of fettling my kart way back in the day.
Love your channel. Has Brexit had any effect on traveling to the continent with a race car. Keep up good fight.
Thanks. So far as a private entrant no, I have been to Spa twice with the MGB and once to zandvoort with the Brabham, However there is a gray area regarding carnets, preparers running customer cars need one, I always make sure I take documentation proving ownership of the cars and either a letter of invitation from the race organiser or entrant list with my name on proving I’m travelling to a race meeting.
Can't wait for the in-car video from this race.
Check the HSCC press page; your No84 is there on the title page.
Another great vlog. Was there on Saturday and it was an excellent days racing. Came to say hello but you were drinking tea according to the chap in the awning. I did introduce him to your saying, how hard can it be. He thought I was bonkers 😂😂Good luck and safe travels to Dijon. Look forward to you next vlog👍
