Mono Black Aggro vs 4c Armageddon - SEMIFINALS - R5 War of the Roses 2024
Random comments: G1: I slow played saccing to the SGC after the 2nd bridge for a couple reasons. Playing around edict/innocent blood was a big part of it, but he was stuck on the 2 lands, so I wanted to give myself the opportunity to deal as much combat damage as I could in the event he ended up getting stuck with uncastable cards in hand to turn off the bridge. He didnt have any sort of clock in play, so it made sense to slow roll and keep all my options open until he found racks to start applying pressure. G2: at the end of the game i was tanking for a long time trying to weigh playing the SGC vs holding it for a turn. I knew my winning lines were via that card, but playing it and a land meant taking extra rack damage (and potentially being dead to a 3rd rack or removal spell) but holding it and having it get hit with a discard effect kills me anyway. Was trying to calculate which was more likely.
Couldn't Sol have attacked with the hippie and the vortex would have killed Chuck to go to game 3? Or am i not seeing something.
Not 100% sure at what point in G2 you’re referring too, but the Ensnaring bridge kept the hippie from swinging in for at least the last two turns.
Fetches can also help thin out the deck. 🙂
Yes but rarely enough to make much difference. Mathematician and MTG Hall of Famer Frank Karsten has said it's about 1-2% per fetch but it's difficult to assign the impact of that vs the loss of life from the fetch land itself. Unless you have a lot of cards that care about threshold or just need cards in your graveyard, I would not recommend running fetches in a mono color deck besides Burn/Sligh.
Premodern freaking rules. So good to see a healthy mtg format.
i would never play with my hand revealed, its an 'easy mode' for my opponent. we play at our events that its all memory. no writing down, just raw memory rewarding mental prowess and fortitude
The rules allow a player to take notes when information is made public as long as they do it in a timely manner. Sol would be 100% correct to pause and take notes here (which Chuck knows) but in the interest of speeding up the pace of the game Chuck opts to play with those cards revealed instead. This isn't easy mode, it's efficient. Trying to play with "raw memory" is not an efficient way to play and will lead to far more mistakes/misplays.
As Andrew said, the rules of the game allow for note taking, so its really just to keep the game moving. In a bigger event, or playing at a higher REL, I usually will pick them up and leave it to the opponent to manage their notes/memory. But Sol is a buddy, and we are playing for very low stakes at these events, so playing face up is just a courtesy I was happy to extend
Love to see a long match between two brews
Chris introduced me to MTGO league with a thorough beat down with his enchantress deck. But walked me through some stuff afterwards. They are an Ultimate champion of the PM community!
Oath of druids targets the player (the opponent) with more creatures. True believer gives shroud, which unables the oath to target
Would really really like to see written decklists for each match!
Unfortunately all I’m given are the deck photos you see at the start of the video!
Feels like the gobbo player should have played piledriver, matron, piledriver and swung in, putting the threshold player to 2 with City of Brass on board and an active siege gang. Then even a port off the top finishes the job.
I love seeing the premodern content. Just an editing note, but it may make the videos tighter if you cut out all the shuffling before the first turn. You could mention what each player mulls to in the voice over. Fore example. There is almost 2 minutes of shuffling before the first turn in this video.
5:04 uh-BAY-unss. The phonetic spelling of Abeyance from the Merriam-Webster dictionary was the thumbnail of a video I posted a few weeks ago.
Thank you!
Hey, great video. Would it be possible to post decklists?
Unfortunately all I'm given are deck photos!
I don't beleive it. Last week I bought 2 monkey cages for my planned goblin welder artifact dragon deck and now you publish something similar. What a conincidence.
There was a small window of time years back where tapping lands was considered an activated ability (before Abeyance was errated to say "are not mana abilities"). I played in a tournament where almost every deck ran 4x Abeyance because it was almost like a Time Walk that replaced itself. You would play it on their upkeep & they would draw a card and say go. I have barely seen the card at all since then so it was a welcome sight.
Super Sweet Decks! i play a similar Jund List and can really recommened The red and Green Words Enchantments. With Sylvan Library its 3 2/2 Bears a Turn or Triple shock
Really cool decks. According to google its: uh·bay·uhns.
That artifacts deck looks cool, but it seems a bit slow. Welder and enlightened tutor seems a lot worse without artifact lands.
These are spicy decks!
It would be great if you linked the lists. Thanks for these great videos!
Thanks! Unfortunately all I'm given are deck photos!
we really do need to know who makes those incredible basic alters!
I had them commissioned by Dustin Brossard, of Brossard Alters!
Any way to find the decklists? The pictures are appreciated, but the glare makes it difficult to see. It looks like the Landstill player is on a single copy of Wasteland? And the three lands between Wasteland and Dust Bowl, I can't make out at all.
Unfortunately all I get are deck photos!
Not sure why in second game, th RG player didnt attack with the 2 7/7 terravore if his opponent was at 3.
Oath deck looked cool but I'm bummed we didn't get to see more of the nightmare survival deck, low mull was the beats
Luckily Marshall did much better in January with a similar build! Here's a couple matches he's was in on camera. R5: ua-cam.com/video/Ridn0Ggxqsw/v-deo.html FINALS!: ua-cam.com/video/-FTNxN38xgU/v-deo.html
WUG Stasis !!! 😍
It's really a cool list. Makes me sad I sold my Stasis'
@@Heavy_Play I sold my Beta Stasis Playset ten years ago telling myself "I'm not that kind of person anymore." Wrong 😈
Who’s got the best Premodern Content? Heavy Play has the best Premodern content!
Arcane denial says the spells controller can draw up to 2, Marshall probably didn't want to draw the extra cards because of black vice in game 1
Now this is a spicy match-up!!!
Pitching Island to Forsaken City is worse than paying with an Island and deploying the land drop.
Someone played a cancel on my manaleak once, needless to Say players Can tunnel vision and forget easy play
yuck new frame cards
Great video as always, I really like those mono black discard decks
Im pretty sure that mage was on the rack. He played them both as soon as it died and it makes no sense to not play one the turn before (when mage was in play) if you could.
Would running overrun in the elves be a good addition or an overkill?
Not sure Elves want it. Tribal Forcemage fulfills the same role and is searchable by Survival.
love MonoB control! Throw in some cabal coffers and nantuko shades for some of that 2000s era action!
10:20 David misspayed that phantatog. It costed only WU because of the sunscape familiar but he tapped 3 lands to cast it.
If the Meddling Mage named Rack, Sol had to wait to block the Mage with the Demon to be able to play it.
Mono-B mystery SB artifact: Dodecapod {4} Artifact Creature - Golem If a spell or ability an opponent controls causes you to discard Dodecapod, put it onto the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it instead of putting it into your graveyard. 3/3
Also love to see a mono-colored deck get the W
I just love to see terravore loose it is such a crazy threat in PM
1:22 Dodecapod
Yeeeeeeeessssssssssssssss new video!!!!!!!
18:08 why waste the fetchland?
Curran!!! Such a nice person on the cradle control discord!
The best!
people is so DUMB shuffling is hand
Favorite "normal" foil basics are probably Invasion, but the secret winner is Arena league promo lands with Urza's Saga art. edit: Glad to see someone else thought that as well! Didn't see the original comment
Gotta name soldiers with the first E plague
damn, is that phish playing in the background? @14:00
Idk how you guys hear this stuff lol. Yeah the brewery we play at has a pretty varied playlist!
I expected a deck with aligators.
Phyrexian Negator = 'Gators
Rooting for the Gators!
That last game was rough, but that first one was tight! Thanks for uploading!
i think i'd go with pile 1 standstill mana leak, pile 2 plains mana leak disenchant
I would have made it pile 1: standstill + disenchant; pile 2: plains + mana leak + mana leak. It would have made a difference if he would have still taken pile 2, because later, he would not have had the Disenchant for the Winter Orb. Standstill is of course the most dangerous card in this situation. With the amount of mana on the table, he could play around the Mana Leaks pretty easy, or at least trade them off two for one of his spells...
This is painful to watch, was so so excited to see these two deck but ryan played so odd imo, the play with wasteland wasnt awful but if the goal is to use wayfarer you can just pass and when john plays a 2nd land waste and then hold priority, not to mention forgetting to draw on turn 3 because he was so adamant about using wayfarer in the upkeep.
