We took a longer trip this time in the 101 to Scotland and went up the west coast and then to the Isle of Skye. The weather was a little unpredictable as you might imagine. The weather was generally good when we stopped but not so much other times. This is the iconic Appplecross pass that was actually really straight forward but the traffic was light. Low ratio for a while on the steeper parts ...

      Well as there was a leak from the toilet flush tank I had to take the loo out to reseal the tank where there was a small split. That only took about 20 minutes and if necessary I could have raised a ply square and easily accessed the tank top. The tank is a new one from a few years ago so I'd hoped if required I wouldn't need to but actually would be pretty quick anyway. I did look at putting it the other way around but there is a steel strength box section running down the side which I would have had to cut into and I was worried what might happen to the integrity of the structure as a result. Pulling the cassette out inside is without any big deal and pretty straight forward and filling the flush etc is also pretty easy. I can even fill from the shower hose if I really needed to. I keep meaning to put an update on as we've been using it for a few trips now and I upgraded the brake servo and tidied up a few issues since the last video. Every time I think of it it seems to be pouring with rain though!! I will try to get round to it soon though.

    Not much of a video, showing the road and your elbow for 33 minutes. Wasn't it about the 101? Couldn't you set up your camera and go back like people mostly do... I've just started to rewatch your videos as when i subscribed i was just very interested in 101s. Two weeks ago i bought one! An ambulance. First job on my list is to replace the brakes as mine are binding on quite a bit due, (i hope) to it having been standing for some time. I traced it's history too. It spent most of it's life at Ashchurch with a stint with the Paras and then it went to the Gulf war with the Gurkhas so mine will be repainted in desert sand the same as yours. I'm hoping the heritage cetificate i just ordered will clear up the mystery of why i keep reading that it began it's life in 1982 and not the 1970s like the rest seem to have

    Hi... Got problems with my 101 brakes as well... All flexi pipes replaced, slave 🤐 cylinders replaced, master 🤐 cylinder re-done, brake linings new.... Worked well for a few hundred km, but suddenly no brakes at all... No fluid leaking anyware, reservoirs stays full, but no brakes.. Can't see any, 050mm gap at the Apportioning valve. Is there a plunger in there that must open and close? If I pull the coil ( spring link) down, it opens a gap, but in releasing it, it closes again... No movement on the opposite end though. Could it be stuck inside valve? When I bleed, it bleeds freely at all four wheels... With the engine running, and I compress the pedal, I hear a hissing sound... Servo diaphragm stuffed ? Any advice please, thx. Regards, from Hermanus, RSA.

    • @spuddoc7230
      @spuddoc7230 2 роки тому

      I would recommend checking for even the slightest leak as this will have a much bigger affect than you might think. The split valve and rear balance valves can cause issues and are a bit tricky to bleed. I use a vacuum bleeder as it will "pull" air out of the fluid more efficiently. AS it turns out the new servo and slave I fitted had a leak in the servo and wasn't working as it should. The one I got hold of originally seems to be a britpart one which is pants. I have a new old stock from Cyprus going in and the strengthening plates which weren't there for me are being put in by the guy who looks after things I can't do. James tells me as I was pushing so hard on the pedal it was bending some of the fixings behind the servo which was reducing my pedal travel and contributing to loss of strength from the pedal transmitted to the brakes. Lastly have a look at the brake cylinders and make sure they are moving freely (someone GENTLY presses on the pedal whilst you check the cylinders with the brake drum off. I found one side completely seized so refurbished all of the front cylinders just win case - quite easy.

      @@spuddoc7230 Thanks for the reply, Doc. No leaks anywhere, all round new cylinders, as mentioned above, will remove the servo and test it, about the only place I haven't really inspected. Some other advice I got was, if the servo packed up, there will still be brakes, but with a hard pedal... I've got medium pedal, then the hissing sound, with hard pedal following... Servo servo it screaming at me as I'm writing to you 😂😂😂

I had it on the weigh bridge a while back as is with almost everything in to go away and it was 3.1 tonnes. I figure it will be just under for a 2 week trip away with water already on board (43 L an loo water and 15 L drinking water). It was fine up and down the hills in Scotland but we are still tracking down a bit of underperformance from the brakes.

      As soon as I got it I changed all the fluids and had a full service. It has top notch leads and a new radiator and hoses. It hadn't done massive miles before I got it but I try to run the engine every week and take it for a run often. The mechanical stuff is all down to James Spurgeon a specialist near me and me trying to fix or replace anything dodgy with as good a replacement as I can any time something isn't right. Last major thing is probably a carb refresh at some point.

    I have a series 3 109 station wagon which has been on the back burner for rebuilding for ages, it has a 3.5 v8. I'm more than a little concerned though because we seem to be at a big turning point with fossil fuels at the moment. Prices are rising , using big engined vehicles is frowned upon and the low emission zones are going to be popping up everywhere. I can only hope that we are not going to be forced off the road by making it too damm expensive to use our vehicles.

    • @spuddoc7230
      @spuddoc7230 3 роки тому

      That's all very true. however this has an historic vehicle so some of that stuff won't apply. I did however watch a review of the petrol situation and the classic car issue and it was quite reassuring. It was basically centred on how long most cars remain on the road and the cost of electric vehicles and how long petrol is going to be required for ordinary transport for some time to come. The 101 struggles to make double figures so its always going to be expensive to fuel it! the absence of B&B or even camping fees sorts most of those cost at the moment anyway.....

    If you love the sound of the V8(and rightly so), what's with the crappy music? Giving priority to traffic coming uphill used to be in the Highway Code. Your 101 looks mint inside! If you decide to run some oil down your speedo cable, here is what a man who used to make up custom cables told me. Remove the cable and hang it upside down over a container to catch the oil as it runs out Form a small funnel using blutak or plasticine sealed onto the outer cable. Dribble some oil into the funnel, leave it. When it has emptied, refill it and then wait for it to dribble out of the other end. When i asked him why put the oil in from the bottom end, he said because if it is something like a motorbike speedo or clutch cable there may be crap inside the outer at the top end. If you oil it from that end you risk pushing it further along the cable. If you put it in from the other end you're more likely to push it out... Just watched the '1st trip to North Wales' video. How about a video on taking out the play in the steering box? Can't think why it popped into my head... 🤔😁 Have you thought about fixing an external camera? We'd get all of the V8 sound and wouldn't have to listen to you endlessly declaring your love and affection to the mrs, which i'm guessing why we get to put up with music. This may be too late for you. Regarding the fridge, I've seen Gadget John on You Tube, add in an old PC computer fan to aid ventilation. Only added a tiny extra electrical load and meant the compressor coil was so much more effective.

      its all in. pc fan especially important if 3 way fridge used. Plan is to add more vents behind through the floor into outside locker if needed.

    Regarding labelling your cables, cables come in more colours than black and red :) (says the man who rewired all of the rear lights in his 1961 Land Rover using blue as that was the reel that he had 'borrowed' from work at the time)

      especially if you use multi fibre cables of larger dimensions - blue and brown etc come into play....!

    Just wondering, how are you planning to access the fuel pump floor hatch if needs be if there's ply and then a shower tray over the top of it?

    • @spuddoc7230
      @spuddoc7230 4 роки тому

      Thats the second person to say the same thing. Basically the ply over that area is separate to the rest of the floor and it has a new pump etc fitted about a year ago. I can't think of a way to make it waterproof and still put everything there so I will just have to take it on the chin if I need to pull up the shower tray if needed. I had wondered if the tank could be dropped instead if needed. I went round and round with this one and settled on having to be faced with removing the shower tray if required. Not ideal but there you go. Everything else is designed to stay put self supporting even if I needed to do that.

      @@spuddoc7230 I can't imagine having an indoor shower in a 101, especially one that the shower tray extends infront of the side door, but each to their own. From what I'm told, dropping the tank isn't as straight forward as it seems, especially if the tank and all components are still original, it would nearly always be easier to access the pump from above, sounds like you've got it all figured out though 👍🏼

      @@Alpine_Overland I sure as well hope so! Shower in front of the door is to make use of wasted space. If you see a video in a year or two of me taking it out then I was dead wrong!!

    Seeing as your wood stain prevents fungal growth etc , would have been an idea to have coated both sides of the wood. Can you tell me info and supplier for the side door?

      Sadly you are correct. Knowing something and knowing it at the right time unfortunately isn't quite the same thing! The door was put in by a firm who convert vans into horse boxes. Apparently you can order any size and door comes with the frame. I will ask Trevor where he orders them from and let you know if he's willing to divulge.....

    JUST WATCHED THE FIRST 5 INSTALMENTS OF YOUR BUILD VERY INTERESTING ONLY THING I WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENT WOULD BE TO HAVE RAISED THE ROOF, AS WELL AS THE REAR, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT VIDEO

    • @spuddoc7230
      @spuddoc7230 4 роки тому

      Raising the roof was 2 things - expense and the undercurrent to try to keep it semi original. The feeling was we could add a pop up later if this doesn't work. The best advice I had when I started was you don't have to get it right the first time and it can be done again if you really want to.(I don't want to but I get what he was saying!)
