Disastrous MKII, CUSTOM DIY-WHEELCHAIR,HOW TO MAKE all terrain,off-road,homemade trike
Back to the drawing-board on this one I'm afraid. :(
This has started to turn around, I went to the local hospital in it last week and with the back wheel almost locked in place and manoeuvring on mainly two wheels it was very capable. Climbed a 5" curb with no problems. Will do an "in action" video soon combining my new hobby of drone flying so I am going to try and find a BMX track locally and film it from the air :0

    Very inspirational. Last comments were over a year ago, but this deserves to be seen by anyone with a disability. I am wheelchair bound and live next to the ocean. Slowly building up parts to make a beach accessible electric wheelchair for myself using an old wheelchair frame I had. Going onto the beach is why I moved here and I have to adapt a tad to be able to do so. Like so many others I am disgusted with the price of anything having to do with disabilities. Looking for an off-road electric wheelchair and the ones that boast being affordable are asking over 5k. That is around 4k more than I have to spend on a chair. Only issue I am running into at the moment is how expensive the raw parts are. I have about 75% of the parts I need and had spent around 600.00 USD so far… and that was trying my best to be fragile. I still need a few more Fat Tires and rims and those are not cheap. Thank you again for posting this.

    Nice work, I wonder if the small wheel was at an angle wouldn’t that help the wheel stay straight. The front fork on a bike is at an angle that helps keep the wheel straight, shove a bike & let it go & it will correct itself & stay upright.

    Firstly my good man, don't ever apologise for a wonderful Yorkshire accent! Most of my wife's family are from Hull! And secondly, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for recognising that us mere mortals cannot afford these things! I'm currently looking into funding for a Grit Freedom Chair, which is a very similar thing to what you've designed and built for yourself. I say 'looking into', because I know full well that I won't be able to get the funding to be able to afford this thing. Firstly, it's manufactured in America (the first hurdle I've got to negotiate), secondly, as you've rightly pointed out, these things cost an absolute arm and a leg, (it works out at nearly 5 grand for goodness sake!) and thirdly, at least 90% of the funding available for these things is aimed at kids, or least for people under the age of 25! I'm a 48 year old man, for goodness sake, what chance have I got! I want to enjoy what life I've got left, I want to go off the beaten track a bit. So I need something like this! But I can't afford it. I wish the manufacturers of these things, would get it into their skulls that the very people that need these things, are also the poorest people in our societies, the disabled people who, generally speaking are on benefits! I guess what I'm trying to say, is congratulations for taking matters into your own hands, and actually building one of these things yourself, and getting yourself out of the predicament that many of us find ourselves in.

    I like your thinking and concept .I am just starting a wheelchair convertion for my diasbled wife so she will be able to go on the local beach .I am no engineer far from it , And yes it is nearly a crime for what fork's charge to buy beach wheelchair's and I don't know How they can charge nearly £600 for a convertion wheelchair kit so it can go on the beach . it is because of this and the fact there are many disabled people who are missing out of not being able to enjoy going on a beach including my wife that I have taken on this Project .keep up the good work . Ps when are you going to add a electric motor to you new designed wheel chair .

    Could I get more information from you about the hub conversion from wheelchair to mountain bike wheels? I am in the process of rebuilding my folding chair with bigger front wheels and a back out-rigger that folds flat. Moving the wheel mounts just to the front of my center line sitting in the chair for better torque and stability.

      @@shawng5799 It has been a long time since I opened a bike wheel and I've never been in the wheelchair hub. My concern is if the axle and bearings have to be completely replaced, or will the bike tire bearings accept the same size axle as the wheelchair. I don't have a bike your tire yet as I'm in the planning phase still so I can't do a physical comparison.

      @@kellyspeakes8350 I bought two quick release hubs with spindles from ebay and then put them into the bike wheels by undoing all the bike spokes. I did not touch any bearings. I used a battery drill set at minimum torque to tighten the wheel back up and kept going around the wheel increasing the torque setting, it worked really well for me. I then fitted the wheels and spun them and tuned the wobble out.

    Amazing work - thank you very much for taking the time to share the process and specs with us. I'm in a similar boat to you and many people commenting in that the all terrain chairs available commercially are way out of my price range (given limited disability income), and this could be a life changing innovation. If you're around this channel & still answering questions at all, might I ask why you chose to put the wheel on the back rather than the front? A lot of designs I've seen place the third (child bike) wheel on the front, and leave a back wheel off completely, which cuts down on length and theoretically makes it a little more portable. Your thoughts?

    • @shawng5799
      @shawng5799 5 років тому

      Climbing curbs and going up slopes. If you have a small wheel at the front you have to put half the weight on it. You have to wheelie it up a curb then there is nothing to stop you from tipping out backwards. With the two big wheels at the front you can easily "climb" up and over things with a the rear wheel for stability.

    your middle tube should be a triangle. (not just a single tube) so weld 2 other sides from each front-wheel-axle back to the steering-tube (on each side) to make it a triangle . that one can not bend. actually your construction flexes, rather than bends. (rotates around your single tube) the triangle will prevent this. (sorry English is not my first language) edit: what happened to your first version? that one looked good.

      If you look at my other video you will see what happened with this project. The version here worked fine though I wanted a bigger back wheel so it would handle kerbs better. I fitted a new stem and a 20" BMX wheel but I could not get it to work as the angles were all wrong. While modifying it further an accident with a hacksaw landed me in hospital and my wife banned me from the garage. Then I came across an expensive wheelchair for just £100 and within two days I had resprayed it,re-upholstered it and fitted BMX tyres. So the project has not been touched for almost a year. It is strange as I woke this morning I had just thought about a modification I could try and then I read your comment. So watch this space this summer.
