Books I want to read... but I'm reluctant (The Reluctant TBR tag, original)

An original book tag: the reluctant TBR tag. What is a book you want to read, but... 1. It was a soft DNF (unable to finish it the first time, want to try again) 2. You’ve read another book by that author and didn’t enjoy it 3. It's brand new, and you don't know when you'll get around to it. 4. The cover is painfully ugly 5. a FANTASY ROMANCE book for your personality type / BOOKTONE recommendations
I feel like I need to rewatch this regularly to keep my dnfing motivation up :P I kind of hate when people say you shouldn't rate your dnfs. If lots of people are dnfing a book, then I think that should impact the average rating of a book.
I realize this isn’t relevant to the video, but I think you should review Dungeon Crawler Carl… hear me out: everyone on UA-cam has reviewed it and loved it. I need someone to hate it just for a contrast. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love it too, but it would just be interesting to hear a different perspective. I can’t imagine you would like it, but I also can’t pinpoint why exactly. The second reason is reviewing a book like that would probably get you more views and help grow your channel.
Hahaha you make some valid points, I don't get the feeling I would love it either
You have definitely inspired me to DNF more books. I now pay more attention to that "dread" feeling - if I am dreading picking up a book to read more of it, there is something wrong, and I should at least consider quitting.
The only thing more amazing than you knowing that a book will be good just by reading 10% of it is that if a book doesn't make a good impression by then, there is a 90% chance that you won't like it by the end. It makes me feel better about dropping a book I was on that I've dropped half away through. It was a trilogy and I really enjoyed the first but unfortunately the protagonist changed and she was far worse than the first book's protagonist.
If you're running out of books to read*, it makes sense to keep reading if there's any chance that you might like a book eventually. In the real world, there are so many books to read that you're much more likely to find a hit for yourself if you fail fast and start a new book. It's an opportunity cost thing. That said, there is a dopamine hit (at least for me) when I finish a book, even if it wasn't a good book for me. And there's definitely some satisfaction in writing a scathing review of books I hate. So, it's not quite as clear cut for me. (But I absolutely support your choice to dump books.) For me, Dune was one of the few books that I struggled with the start and loved by the end. And I'm very glad I pushed through the start to get to the fascination that was the rest of the book. And now I like the start of the book as well. But that's exceptional, not normal. Finally, I will say that sometimes I can tell that a book just isn't for me at the time. In that case, a soft DNF can give me a chance to get into a better space for a book in the future than trying to force through a reading block. Even that's a rather low probability outcome, though. Most soft DNFs end up as gone and forgotten forever. As to rating books that I don't finish, I absolutely both rate and review books that I dislike enough to drop. I have several reviews that start something like, "Perhaps this book turns into a masterpiece after page 74, but I will never know." It's only fair to let people know that you didn't read the whole thing, but it's likewise a public service to let potential readers know that for at least some people, the beginning is terrible. Good discussion of the issue. * Yeah, right.
🐆
Fahrenheit is not only boring but also chauvinistic. I wish I were as wise as you and had DNFed the long, long way to a small angry planet. That book made me mad.
Funnily enough I feel the exact opposite about the morality of rating DNFs. I consider a rating to be a reflection of the totality of a book so my mind can't even conjure hypothetical ratings for books I haven't finished let alone calculate that into my reading spreadsheet or goodreads. I get what you mean about the bottom cliff of your reading not being reflected if you don't rate your DNFs but because I don't even mentally consider those books read it doesn't bother me. It actually used to annoy me to see my read books and DNFs mixed together on Goodreads shelves until I discovered you could make a whole exclude shelf for them a few years back.
I can definitely respect that opinion
@ChloeFrizzle but even with our difference of opinion, I fully support everyone who dnfs. Life is too short to read books you don't like!
🦩Yes! DNF is a great thing and very liberating! I have enjoyed my reading more with liberal DNF. Why waste time on a book that I don't enjoy when there are so many GREAT books out there - just waiting to be read!? I also count the DNF in my reading total - as long as I picked it up in good faith. 📚
Hello. I totally agree with the love of the characters and plot assessments and your succinct derivations. I started with "A Civil Campaign" and immediately fell in love with all of the principles and LITERALLY all other characters in the novel...and I mean all...Dov, Delia, The Kudelka's, Mark, Greggor, Haute Pel, Gem GNL Bennon, Illian. Lady Alice, Enrika, MdM VorSwasson, Pym, Jerrord, the house guards, Captain Svleros, TsPis, Ma Kosti...the whole caste really of this novel TBH. Thank you for this terrific presentation!
I actually didn't like the ending, I wanted more of the book and I was upset that it was done. I have problems with books ending, I want them to go on forever but all stories end even if you don't want them too. Other than that I loved the book and it even made me laugh out loud at times. It has me on the edge of my seat and I would rate it a 4 and a half.
are the graphs self made or did these come from an app? Great video!
Self made! Most of them I made with Google Sheets
@ thank you!
The most important thing to know about Ivan is that if anything tragic should happen to Gregor, he’s at the top of a lot of people’s lists for who will become the next emperor, and he *really* doesn’t want that job, and he doesn’t want anyone thinking that putting him into that job is a good idea.
I’m one of the people who really likes _Falling Free,_ and it was the first Bujold I ever read, when it was originally published in _Analog_ magazine, but as it is so disconnected from the rest of the books in the series it can be put off from being your entry point. I would suggest reading it before “Labyrinth,” though.
Lady Macbeth still hurts 😩
Oh how I wish he would continue the Rithmatist series! But also I'm scared that if he did, then he would rush it and it wouldn't be as good as it should have been... 😅
I’ve never seen someone read so much of an author that they don’t like.
Hahaha whoooops I keep saying I'm going to break up with brandosando books then I keep picking them up like I'm trapped in a relationship that was once happy. Excited to do it again with his new book this week!
I'm sooo happyd to see The Rithmatist on Shard Tier!! I find it to be so underrated, or worse still: forgotten / ignored. I took it to the beach last year and I forgot to socialize. I only wanted to read and read. Had a superb time with it.
🦩You are teaching me new words: SHARD Tier Complete CREM
I always forget crem isn't a real word
I like (or, at least, tolerate) way more Sanderson books than you, but I can tell you that I hated Lux. So you have my vote to keep it in the "haven't read it" pile :D
Good to know!
I doubt that I’ll be reading these books, but I appreciate your review. My impression of Robin Hobb is that she writes well, but she makes her characters suffer too much. I like to enjoy what I’m reading, and I admit that I don’t really enjoy watching people suffer.
I would like to apologize to Sixth of the Dusk, I realize from some further research that I don't remember what I originally thought of it. What I was remembering and hating was this (wob.coppermind.net/events/448-row-release-party/#e14408 ) teaser chapter of the sequel to Sixth of the Dusk, which is now being turned into the new book Isles of the Emberdark. So now I'm much more apprehensive of that book 🤷
This video comes out at a perfect time for me, as I am finally going to start reading Brandon Sanderson next year 😊 Going to start with Mistborn ofc, but I also just saw Emperor’s Soul in a used bookstore so I had to buy it! Are there any books I have to read first before starting this one?
No, emperor's soul is a standalone. It's in the same world as Elantris, but they are completely independent from each other
What is punky drama means ???? Huh!!! . You are the most dramatic 😡😡😡😡😡
SO many fun books. Thanks!
Thanks! This helps so much!😊
I absolutely loved Piranesi. The specific sentence "I am the beloved child of the house" stays with me. As someone without any religious beliefs, this expression of faith was so beautiful, and it feels like a spirituality that I could share in.
I was also really disappointed with Lady Macbeth. I didn't even finish it 🙈 I recently read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and loved it, and it makes me excited to pick up Piranesi next year! And now you have convinced me to add Remnant Population to my tbr because it sounds interesting!
So fun🥳: I also read Humble Pi in the past several weeks - I gave it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'm doing the Anthropocene Reviewed right now - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ so far.
Omg that’s a lot of books! I wish some reviews were a bit longer, like Dandreth’s Assassin, which I was interested in picking up bc the premise sounded pretty good. And I can’t believe you read another T Kingfisher, you just keep giving every book 3 stars 😂
Here's some more on Daindreth's Assassin: the premise is indeed very good. I think the author has a talent for interesting ideas and themes. However, the payoff wasn't there. The plotting and setup wasn't tight enough, and the ending felt unearned and lackluster. If you're just looking for an easy adventure romantasy, I think it's fine. But if you're looking for a good fantasy plot or romance, meh.
@ Ohh thank you, I don’t think I will pick it up then!
Surreal to make this video, in definite sweater weather, talking about some books that I read in the height of summer heat.
🦾 I love that scene! The way I read it was a little different - I think Gurathin's central issue is (and has been all along) not whether Murderbot has the right to make moral judgments, but whether it even UNDERSTANDS that there are alternatives to violence. Remember he hasn't seen the many fights and situations in books 2-3 when Murderbot goes out of its way to use minimum force. I think he's not doubting its morals/intentions so much as its experience/wisdom -- maybe he's making the same mistake that some readers do, assuming that Murderbot's only recently become self-aware -- and Murderbot quite rightly pushes back against that. (AND it does it without pinning Gurathin to the wall this time, which definitely strengthens its argument.) idk I just love their relationship so much, because they're so much alike in some ways. ("55% cognition." "fuck you." "okay make that 60%.")
🚀 It's really striking to me how Murderbot in ASR has this lowkey distaste/contempt for ComfortUnits as a class, which colors its perceptions of (ugh. I don't want to refer to it as "Tlacey's ComfortUnit" because seriously, fuck Tlacey, but it doesn't have another designation-- anyway) THIS ComfortUnit -- but then its investigations and what it discovers about the Ganaka ComfortUnits shake that all up. Also, I second the thanks for not gendering it <3
The corrupt order of Servants was still around at the end of the Tawny Man trilogy.
I was hooked and engaged until the last few chapters. The ending seemed sloppy and unbelievable in my opinion.
Yeah, "read them all...." you mean, read them all at least 3 times?
you're moving too much
oh my god, the ugly cover question is so true lol. Ninth House was my first Bardugo and I think I would appreciate it more now by seeing how her writing has improved, but I definitely didn't love it. Beach Read!!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on that one!
