Described as a compact yet potent, single-seater fighter designed for speed and firepower,
It embodies the philosophy of “strike first, strike fast.”
It was developed by Drake Interplanetary to provide a cost-effective yet heavily armed option for pilots needing versatility in combat.
The Buccaneer balances maneuverability and firepower, making it a formidable opponent when piloted by skilled hands.
To many, around the verse - myself included prior to conducting this review - this ship probably gets overlooked..
Perhaps.. Forgotten.. Amongst the ever-growing variety of new ships flowing into the Star Citizen Universe..
So let’s take some time & get into the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Drake Buccaneer…

Solo Ship Review - Origin 325A | Star Citizen | One Shot Ship Review
The Bucc is an interceptor, it's forward acceleration is much better than light fighters like the Arrow. but it's maneuvering thrusters and turn rate is worse. It excels at catching opponents, 3rd partying, and escaping confrontations.
Current daily driver (and only ship): a Nomad. Should do fine for me at the outset of 4.0. Your expense report tallying reminds me of the series "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar"
I think the Nomad is a good choice.. plenty of versatility & low operating costs. I've never heard of "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar". Is it any good?
@ForgeCoreGaming A crispy 1950s-era detective-ish radio drama the algorithm likes to bring up to me. It's very... from a distant era. Endearing. x3
I remember getting the special promo ballistic gun for the bucc at the original concept. It would be interesting to know if they'd give it some sort of insurance clarification.
Was it LTI at the time?
@@ForgeCoreGaming The ship was, but the weapon was attributed separately. It's the "C-788 "Combine" Ballistic Cannon" and it doesn't say anything about insurance. It would be interesting to know what happens to it if you lose it. Knowing CIG, it probably won't have insurance.
@@OverkillGamingPC hmmm... yeah if it isn't in your hangar under the buccaneer as an included item.. I'd wager you're correct.
I hope CIG can be as patient with themselves as I am. Then again I can freely spend my time and resources on other things while waiting!
Big time :) What other games are you playing?
This will be my EVENTUAL situation, lol, i bought a Starlancer (despite getting rid of my Corsair because among other things i figured it would be a bit much to solo with engineering gameplay on the horizon) and am making a decent living just running hauling missions. Post wipe however, i plan to start out JUST using the Intrepid. Similar rules (minus the ERT bounties, lol) and the goal is to save until i can afford a Hull A, then build until i could afford the Starlancer in game, avoiding all the other pledge ships i own until then.
Nice- so you self-impose limits so you have a goal to go after?
The interior layout is so satisfying in terms of efficient usage of constrained volume.
It really is - I particularly like the stairs connecting the 2 levels. I'll probably squeeze a box or two in there just for looting bunkers & such.
Glad this ship is giving some recognition in this day and age.
Lol is it though?
What really lets it down is the lack of fuzzy dice hanging from the interior of the cockpit canopy. Tsk!
To hell with safety!
The Buc is a ship that i want, DESPERATELY to love. The look is amazing, it screams EU Star Wars to me, a ship that was built by some outer rim start-up that designed a fighter around whatever parts they knew they could readily access. So... Drake... I want to love it so much that i have owned it three times through the pledge store, twice with in-game currency, and once as the loaner when i owned a Corsair. Sadly, to paraphrase The Pilot, it doesn't love me back. Just existing sometimes results in a Major Torque Imbalance, but that is generally my experience with Drake ships in general. The real downside though is that it is a medium fighter, that handles like a heavy fighter, but is as fragile as a light fighter, and sadly always ends up either getting largely ignored until the next wipe, or melted in favor of a base Mk1 Hornet F7C, which give me all the same hardpoints, but far better handling and survivability, at least when i'm at the stick, your mileage may vary. That said maybe the Hornet is a more forgiving craft, the "improved handling" is just a matter of perception, or i am simply not a good enough pilot to bring out the Buccaneer's true potential. I'll inevitably own the Buc again, probably when hull armor is implemented, maybe before that, because despite the fact that i have more staying power in a fight in my Reliant Tana than i do the Buc, that beautiful beast with it's enormous engines, curious landing gear, and big honking space gun, continues to call to me, and i always answer.
Does the Bucc know you feel this way?
@@ForgeCoreGaming we've had MANY long talks on the subject 🤣
It is possible to fit 4 bucanners inside Polaris' hangar. Fitting in a way they can get out in any order and just strafing up. Pretty good combination. drive. google. com /file/d/1GQ6m1-JidaiMke79Im4MKIwZWnipMrPg/view?usp=sharing
Interesting haven't tried the buc for ages. It appears they have not nerfed it's weapons capacitor enough compared to all the other ships as having 50 shots on 5 guns is way more than any other fighter seems to have nowadays.
Yeah, I don't really own anything I could compare it to 1:1.. I think I need to borrow my friend's F7A or F8C... or maybe I can check out one of the Reliant ships to see how their capacitors do.
Great video and review! I have one of these as a loaner from a Corsair. I am not a good pilot (YET) so I need a ship with a bit more hull HP/armor to survive HRT's. Once I get better I'll swap to this or the arrow. Do you use a joystick for pilot combat or a mouse/keyboard?
Within 48 hours of first starting in Star Citizen, I ordered HOSAS.. If you're going to switch to HOSAS, I suggest VKB.. They're kinda pricey ($400 for a pair), but as they saying goes - buy once, cry once.
@@ForgeCoreGaming Got ya, I'll take a look at them later today! Thanks for the recommendation
The best thing about the Bucc is, that it is not being taken as serious competitor by many people. It get underestimated a lot. It also helps that a lot of PvP-interested player put waaay too much value on meta without understanding what that even means and dismiss everything that isn't meta right away. Even when faced as opponent. And as you said, the Bucc is dangerous alone flown by a half decent pilot, but when put in a group, or put as support to something else, the Bucc is a serious threat that shouldn't be ignored. Also, when you encounter them as hostile NPCs, kill them first. They are squishy, so a few shots there, because if you ignore them, they'll be a serious drain on your shields and hull. I fly the Bucc ever since it released. It's the ship that converted me completely to the Drake philosophy. Be fast, shoot fast and don't get hit. And don't stay in the fight if it is not going your way. Anyhow, the Bucc cockpit also always gave me this x-wing feeling. Oh, and don't forget, you can switch out that 1 s4 gun on the top with a spinal mount for 2 s2, which would give you 6 weapon hardpoints instead of five (instead of the 1 s4, 2 s3,2 s1 you would have 2 s3, 2 s2 and 2 s1. The s4 can be a hassle when fighting fighters, so switching it out for 2 s2 pushes your firepower against small(er) targets, while it leaves the Bucc lacking against everything that is just a bit larger. So, I wouldn't recommend switching out the s4 mount against the spinal mount. It is just nice to have the option. - About it having no room for passengers... well... it might not be intended, it very well isn't and I wouldn't really recommend it, but I've taken people with the Bucc from A to B. There's space in front of the pilot where someone can lay down relatively safe. It's doable, not recommended but possible.
lol how do you even figure out that someone could lay in there?
I guess this ships best focus is harassing haulers plus pirating Freelancers and ships of similar size
Yeah, definitely focus on ships that can't out maneuver you.. otherwise you're kinda dead
I have a few different fighters to defend against a XenoThreat, ie: Light/Arrow, Medium/Buccaneer, Heavy/F8C that I store at MIC-L1.
If you completed the save stanton mossions and have the new Ador salvaged repeaters it takes your dps up to 3000.
I hadn't even thought of that..
For most of its time since the Buccaneer was released, it’s been a horrible fighter. For a short time, it’s was actually very agile, near the top for all fighters but after a few patches it was nerfed hard. When strafing was much more powerful this fighter excelled in agility. Throughout its history two characteristics with this fighter have always stuck… 1. Great firepower 2. Amazing acceleration
Sold my Polaris to grab an 890j, such an amazing ship. I also named the ship, The Taint. Yes, it says it on the sides of my ship. Worth.
I don't think it is OP. A Capital ship shouldn't fear Fighters that are not made to take down them. Only Ares with Size 7 and Torpedo-Bombers should be a thread. Besides of that maybe Sub-Capital-Ships (in a pack of 3 or so) and of course other Capitals should be able to take a Polaris down.
Did it always have white engines? or are the textures bugged on this too?
I actually don't know the answer here.. this is literally my first time owning one (bought for the video)
I’m no fighter jock, in fact I suck, but I do have a Bucc as a loaner for my Vulture I think. I dint think I’ve ever flown it. I’ll give it a try now.
Let me know what you think!
Active ATC, keep it up bud!
Thanks, will do!
Buccs are iconic and work well to round out variety, you just won't catch me in one! I prefer the Gladius for light/medium dogfighting.
Yeah, I'm checking out the gladius next!
Really useful information on the capacitor front, there's some things that Erkul can't really tell you, and that hands-on experience of "I'm dodging so much the lower cap efficiency doesn't matter" is great to know. I love the Bucc, always have, and am always happy to see somebody else discover its unique strengths. One recommendation for the video beauty shots side of things - do you have Depth of Field turned on in the game? I think it might be kind of ruining your external shots of the Bucc there, making anything closer to the camera super blurry (e.g. 10:39, the nose of the Bucc is blurry af while the engines are perfectly in focus). Turning it off might make those external shots look better for a video.
Bucc was my first ship upgrade after my auora. I got the original concept when it came out. But i upgraded away from it after cig made it clear they hate drake. They nerfed it. It has the biggest engines but not the acceleration to match. mediocre manuverability for its size. And a tiny health pool with wings that fall off at the slightest hit
Ok - so I wasn't around for those nerfs.. so literally every criticism I had came in the nerfs >.< lol classic CIG
@ForgeCoreGaming yea when it first came out the acceleration forward was so good it could black you out every time right away
All ships have their place in its own play style, The Buc is intended as a frontier rapid response ship. I think drake ships will see much more use when they add more systems, engineering, and maelstrom in game, as they will be easier to maintain away from civilization.
100%
Nice, got it as a loaner for my corsair
Do you use it?
@@ForgeCoreGaming honestly, I mostly do cargo, not much of a fighter. But got a HOSAS setup recently, so maybe it will change in the future
Great Video as always. I like the look of it but I hate flying it... I am more of a hornet and sabre guy
I'm a big fan of the Hornet if I'm going to fly a fighter
Have you tried the Ghost MK2 yet? I have it in my Hangar but since 3.24.3 went live I am not able to reach my personal Hangar in New Babbage
I personally like the industrial look of Drake interiors😅. It reminds me of the tech used by the Terran in Starcraft on their marines and siege tanks.
That's fair - I just tend to favor the "Star Trek". I think that's what really gave me the itch for a game like this.
In theory, an interceptor is mainly a defensive aircraft used to target and intercept incoming bombers and cruise missiles before they can do damage. In SC, it seems like right now they are just fighters with faster top speeds and less maneuverability, but it would be nice to see if CIG starts to differentiate them more in the future. At least with its high DPS, the Bucc seems to come closest to what an interceptor should be.
That would make sense!
Ravioli
Also drake ships are icky
right?
I'm more of a heavy fighter enjoyer but I do have to admit the Buc never disappoints in terms of firepower
It's so strong
I've been loving this series so far! It's been great to listen to on my commute to work. Keep em coming 😁
Great to hear! I'm not stopping now!
Ive been following SC since the Elite Dangerous Odyssey screwup in 2020. Watching Morph's architect reviews, ISC, etc. Now that I found this example of how star citizen can be like. I think I may finally buy the Cutter and finally experience first hand what Ive been seeing all these years. I wanna be a space trucker too ;-) Please! Keep em coming!
Would you like a referral code?
Do you have to do the save stanton missions in order or can you pick them up as they are offered? I should start them this weekend and complete them soon.
So they originally stated that you would be able to do them as they became available, but my org mates and I weren't seeing the next available mission set until after we finished the one before it. At least when it came to Phase 4. I think we completed phases 1 & 2 before phase 3 came out.
Man this phase 4 has been awful for me with the crashes, 30ks, and bugs with hangers. I have not been able to complete these bad boys
You still have lots of time & free fly should be ending soon. Server performance should go back up after free fly
890 jump for quantum fuel. after I earn it again in my bug filled 600i doing bounties
Oohh the 890J.. do you usually have a crew with you?
@@ForgeCoreGaming Nah my friends noped out awhile ago. I may need to get in a org, but i have a few fighters it can carry.
My daily at the moment is the Starlancer but with 4.0 I will be visiting Pyro and I have not found it as useful there. The reason is that many of the settlements are very big, the pads are often blocked and there is little room to fit a Starlancer anywhere inside so I keep having to land outside and walk a long way. Also, there are many commodities that give a high profit per scu but are only available in quantities of 10-30 scu. For these reasons, I think I will be using a C1 in Pyro. Back in Stanton i will probably use my Vulture or Prospector to build up enough money to fill my C1 then my Starlancer and start trading properly.
Interesting. I'm purposely avoiding play testing 4.0 because I want it to still be "fresh" when it comes to PU. But that's some insightful information there that I hadn't considered.
Love the vid, the game can sometimes really feel like star wars
Lol it definitely can!
Americans voted for trump, right? Trump's Plan to Save FREE SPEECH! ua-cam.com/video/zsX7YnvuaBA/v-deo.html
I really enjoyed the Save Stanton missions. I'm interested to see how whichever faction was backed the most during phase 4 affects the story in chapter two. Good stuff. You'll have that Scorpius in no time.
Yeah, and I hope we see more contracts/missions follow suit with longer storylines.
@@ForgeCoreGaming Absolutely. A little more narrative to drive things forward would be great. I think we're getting there. CIG does seem to be putting more energy into this sort of thing and making money is fun but it would be cool to have some other drives.
@@LivewareProblem-P4r Exactly - we're a bunch of nerds that like stories and lore.. give us what we want! lol
@@ForgeCoreGaming Exactly!!
It sucks that your game bugged at the start. As far as daily driver goes, I don't own Star Citizen but have played during a few free flights and found the Avenger Titan to be pretty good.
Yeah, the avenger is widely regarded as the GOAT starter ship.
I have put nearly $7k into this game I was told who cares about the 890 Jump Twitch yesterday. I don't have a game after 12 years and people made the choice to ghost me? There are fraud laws. There are misleading marketing laws so go ahead deleting what I say and write here. There are disclaimer laws.
It will be nice when we can finally blade the unmanned turrets, into point defence turrets.
Yeah I can't wait tbh. The starlancer will have a serious power spike
Not much of a challenge when you have ERT's from the start and an Org to help you :P
They don't usually come along - they just wanted to do save Stanton.
Nice job! I haven’t done any of the Save Stanton yet, probably gonna miss out, especially since I suck at dogfighting. I just got myself a Starlancer today with the final CCUs from IAE. I think I might start 4.0 with my C1 for some smaller deliveries and hauling, then move up to the Starlancer.
Honestly. Starlancer is cheap to operate and way more sturdy than the C1. I don't really see a reason to use the C1 over the Starlancer for anything but speed.
@ Food for thought!
Ravioli
Spaghetti
So a Drake Corsair can have many guns and be called an exploration, but the 890 Jump, which costs nearly as much as Polaris and is listed as exploration, can't be well-armed? Streamers and the Drake community have major double standards. There is a thread not made by me called " 890 Solo?" by backer Jengo go read what they have to say about the 890 jump being solo.
Love the "receipt" at the end. Keep em coming!
