Remembering Ricky - The Music and Memories of Rick Nelson, Part 2 EDITED with substitute recordings
Переглядів 741Рік тому
In 1987, I produced a six-hour radio tribute to the late Rick Nelson. Featuring special guests who knew and loved Rick and his music, the three decade musical career of the man, for whom the term "teen idol" was coined, was explored in depth. Woefully underappreciated by music critics, Rick Nelson was the second highest selling Rock and Roll artist from 1957 through the early 60s. He placed 35 ...

Country, Rockabilly, Roots singer/musician Ronnie Mack is a driving force up and down the West Coast, and as far away as New York City. He hosted the celebrated Barn Dance for years, as well as celebrations of Elvis Presley's birthday and, of course, Rick Nelson's birthday. He knew Rick and had the privilege of being in the studio when Rick recorded "You Know What I Mean," the last released rec...
Judy Markey Remembering Ricky (Interview)
Переглядів 8902 роки тому
Syndicated writer and radio personality Judy Markey was the first person I put on my list of people to interview about Rick Nelson. On January 1, 1986, Judy's column in the Chicago Sun-Times was devoted to her grief over Rick's death. She had idolized him as a girl and interviewed him as a woman and remained a devoted fan. She was so gracious about sharing her memories and giving the most eloqu...
Thurley Burnette Remembering Ricky (Interview)

There were a few surprises while compiling interviews for "Remembering Ricky The Music and Memories of Rick Nelson," but none more delightful than this one: I called Glen Campbell's office to inquire about interviewing him about his days playing rhythm guitar for Rick. The woman who answered the phone was Thurley Burnette, the widow of Rockabilly great Johnny Burnette, who, along with his broth...

Randy Meisner Remembering Ricky (Interview)

Randy Meisner is one of the founding members of the Eagles. Before that, however, he was a founding member of another country-rock group, Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band. He toured with them and played on two albums, the groundbreaking "Rick Nelson in Concert" and one of Rick's best albums, "Rudy the Fifth." In this interview, recorded in 1987, Randy recalls the formation of the band and ...

The late, great Jimmie Haskell was a renowned composer and arranger, whose award-winning arrangements include "Ode to Billy Joe," "If You Leave Me Now," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." But, in 1957, he was working for Imperial Records when his boss Lou Chudd put him in charge of overseeing the recordings of his new hot artist, Ricky Nelson. Rick's relationship with Jimmie would last to the en...

Finding out one has something in common with a musical superstar can be surprising...and rewarding. It turns out that John Fogerty and I share a role model: Rick Nelson. In 1987, John was kind enough to give an interview for my radio special, "Remembering Ricky The Music and Memories of Rick Nelson." The interview was arranged through John's brother Bob. In it, John recalls the impact that Rick...
Carl Perkins Remembering Ricky (Full Interview)

Rick Nelson's boyhood idol was the Rockabilly legend Carl Perkins. Rick said that he heard Carl singing his hit "Blue Suede Shoes" and knew immediately what he wanted to do. On his first album, Ricky covered two Carl Perkins songs. In an interview recorded in 1987 for the radio special "Remembering Ricky The Music and Memories of Rick Nelson," Carl Perkins recalls meeting Rick in 1985, while re...

I watched their TV show as a very young girl in the '50's. I always thought that Ricky was a hunk & loved listening to him sing & play guitar. I believe he was the one to motivate my interest in the guitar, which is still a big part of my adulthood today 2024. xoxo

Great interview, except that the speed slows down somewhere around 18.00, then the speech becomes very laboured and difficult to hear. Hope it can be fixed.

DAvid and his wife June owned a summer house a block down the street from us in Newport Shores, Newport Beach, CA in the mid-60s. Never saw him, but my mom talked to June. I was 11 and knew more about Ricky than him at the time.

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve really dug into his post 60s music and have been loving everything! I was only 9 when he died but he was my first crush through syndication and (like EVERYONE) was so upset the day he passed. I always thought I’d get to see him in concert one day. 😭

It’s so refreshing to hear this interview and you could hear and feel the love that the family had fir each other. In todays world there is so much fighting and nastiness with the Hollywood families this was such an uplifting story of great loving parents that is getting rare in the entertainment world. David seemed like such a good human being.

I love Ricky's rock n' Roll recordings, and Ricky could sing country as well as anyone. I think he would have been a great country recording star. The album he did "Bright Lights and Country Music" with the title song written by Bill Anderson, Ricky covered a number of great country recordings that were as good as the originals.
