Remembering Ricky - The Music and Memories of Rick Nelson, Part 3 - The Early Decca Years

  • In 1987, I produced a six-hour radio tribute to the late Rick Nelson. Featuring special guests who knew and loved Rick and his music, the three decade musical career of the man, for whom the term "teen idol" was coined, was explored in depth.
Woefully underappreciated by music critics, Rick Nelson was the second highest selling Rock and Roll artist from 1957 through the early 60s. He placed 35 recordings on the Top 40 charts, had the first number one record on the Hot 100 and influenced scores of musicians, including Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, and John Fogerty. An estimated 100 million of his records have been sold. More than any artist of the 1950s, Ricky Nelson brought Rock and Roll into America's living rooms and introduced it to the parents, making it acceptable for their kids to play. Through success and failure, he remained committed to his music until the end of his life.
All of the guests gave their time for free, out of their respect and affection for Rick Nelson.
Parts One and Two of the documentary, covering Ricky's years with Imperial Records, were removed by request of UMG, which holds the copyright to those recordings. To hear those fantastic recordings, please visit Ricky Nelson - Topic, the official Rick Nelson channel.
I apologize for any ad interruptions. These ads were not authorized by me.
    PART THREE:
In this episode: Rick moves to Decca Records and produces more hit records. The British Invasion begins. Rick films his final theatrical movie, "Love and Kisses." "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett" comes to an end. Rick goes Country and also sings Bacharach and David songs in "On The Flip Side." .

I was a lifelong fan of Rick and bought every record of his from I'm Walkin through to the end. Respect has to be given due to the fact when the sales fell off in 64, he kept recording and trying new things. He rebounded with The Stone Canyon Band and created some great music until his death. A great legacy. RIP Rick.

If you were a Rick Nelson fan, it didn't matter if he wasn't a chart topper. You waited anxiously for the next album! It was RICK!

I learned to sing listening to his records in the late 50’s. When I formed a band of my own in my high school year 61-62 naturally I covered his songs. In college I covered For You, Mary Lou. When I went to NYC to audition for a role in a group that had a top ten tune, I got the job by singing his I’ve Got My Eyes on You. Even now as our group plays reunions, I cover his songs. Thanks Rick. PS I even named my first daughter Kris.

I found myself going down "memory lane" again. I couldn't watch this on New Year's Eve, so I started earlier. I wish his music would go on forever.

I loved Ricky so much, felt so bad when he died. I always loved Elvis to, but he did not live a very good life in the 70's. He got heavy and his hair was way to long. Ricky was so handsome and had such a great voice. At least he wasn't on drugs .

This is the first time I hear such music. I suppose it used to be fashionable at one time. It's great that the radio announcer is interwoven with the announcement of a musical piece. Rhythmic to listen to. Thank you very much. I greet you warmly.

Ricky was a good guy. He stood up for black performers who were being cheated out of their music royalties. That took guts from the seemingly mellow personality of Ricky Nelson.
    Kudis to a decent guy.

Tracy was conceived before they married. Even Rick later referred to it as a shot-gun wedding.
“They married on April 20, 1963. Kris was pregnant,[74] and Rick later described the union as a "shotgun wedding".[75] “ Wikipedia
