Having, finally, completed the track work, both electrically and mechanically on my P4 model of South Pelaw, proper track testing across all the routes on the layout is now possible. Here's a look at a coal train negotiating some of the paintwork, a couple of rough spots to work out but everything stayed on the track! Just to dispel the myth that you need to spring or compensate rolling stock i...

A short video showing a couple of trains passing through South Pelaw. Originally shot in 4K, my PC proved incapable of editing 4K videos so I've downscaled it to 1080p. CAPTION ERROR: Just to mention an error in the captions, it is, of course, an 01 in the third clip, not a K1...

The Banker Returns...

Further work on the layout and the branch crossover as well as the turnout and catch point for the banker's siding are now fully operation so I'm now able to replicate the return of the banker loco from Consett to South Pelaw. No sound on this one as another club member had the radio on in the background and I didn't fancy a copyright strike...

All change on the Consett iron ore trains...
Question, when was the last time a 9F hauled a Tyne Dock ore train? And were there any other steam engines that were used ‘commonly’ on said trains when the 9F’s were unavailable
The last 9F hauled iron ore train ran on on 19 November 1966. Prior to the 9Fs, O1s and Q7s were used but they were limited to 8 wagons rather than the 9 that the 9Fs could handle.
The music spoiled the video sorry.
Seems to get better every time I see this layout
Thank you, appreciate it.
So looking forward to seeing this layout at Newcastle show in November, having missed the York show..
We're looking forward to being there.
That brings back memories, excellent shots. Don't forget max speed 25mph loaded or empty!!
Fantastic...!
Thank you.
Fantastic
Thank you.
excellent [again] When I was at Consett in 1976 Class 37s were allowed 9 loaded 21T hoppers up the bank to Consett and return with 18 empty hoppers down the bank. South Dock men.
Thank you, again. I need to get some more 21T wagon kits finished...
@@jdmodels1968 As I'm 00 I have 120 21t hoppers, 18 HUO, 30 MCO/V and 18 HEA so I don't have the problem of regauging. 9 x 37, 4 x 24 [Iron Ore] 4 x 46 4 x25 [Scr] 2 x 20 [Scr]
Superb
Thank you, much appreciated.
One of the best model railways if not the best on the show circuit John, very enjoyable to watch and catch up with Duncan, keep up the good work.
Thank you, appreciate it.
Excellent [again] I once drove an ore train with 5106/5111 to Consett -max speed at Annfield East 12MPH!
I never got to see the 24s, the 37s had taken over before I ever saw the line.
The 24s were clapped out, the wagons were restricted to 25mph however it was a bit of a retrograde step when the 37s arrived. their 9 wagons were 100t tipplers as the ore came from Redcar and the tippler at the works was always breaking down so it could take hours [sometimes days] to unload a train instead of 30 seconds with the old 56t wagons. @@jdmodels1968
Excellent- nice to see a Tyne Dock loco on the ore train. Don't forget the ore trains were banked from South Pelaw , 9Fs were booked but you could also use a WD, 01, 92167 [1962] and even 92006 from York when the 9Fs were having boiler trouble but not sure which year.
At the point I did the video, the banker was sat in it's siding off to the right. We run the iron ore trains until the brake van passes under Pelton Lane bridge then bring the banker out and add it to the rear of the train.
I love the slw 24, if only I could get my hands on one
They are lovely models, I'm fortunate enough to have four of them.
Excellent tribute my friend, amazing, thanks to everyone who helped out,I just had memory of walking down the ballast from South pelaw to Birtley before it was ever a cycle track, keep up the good work.
My friends and I watched all that track get taken up,it was heart breaking in a way,I still live in South Pelaw, its a cycle track now which isn't bad really,it was an old class 40 with flat beds on the back, they'd take up a few lengths of track, load them up and off they went,it was a slow process but it got the job done, funny story, the first pond my father and I built in our back garden was rectangular, all the stones around it had cables embossed on them, you can probably guess where we salvaged them from,I wish I still had them, not much left now.
Thank you for the comments, they are very much appreciated. I've lived in either Stanley or Ouston (where I am now) and can see the route of the line from my front bedroom window so it has always been the local line for me.
Gorgeous layout! I love how this video is shot almost as if it from the perspective of a trainspotter at the fence
Thank you, much appreciated.
Every time I see this layout it just gets better and better.
Makes me both homesick and timesick. My parents lived in Rickleton back in the day.
Hi there. In the first clip you stated a WD with empty steel wagons and a K1 heading towards Ouston Junction. That K1 at 00:52 looks remarkably like one of the 'Tyne Dock Five' a Tyne Dock fitted Thompson O1. At 9:17 that K1 again looks like a Thompson O1. Just saying as I never saw a K1 yet! All-in-all: A fantastic layout.
Good spot :) My bad on the caption.
Double headed Claytons (Class 17) were tested on the Tyne Docker but obviously failed miserably, however, I've got a pic of a single Sulzer Type 2 (Class 24) hauling 9 hoppers banked by a pair of Claytons. That would make for an interesting train. Are they Dave Bradwell hoppers?
I’ve got a couple of photos of that, one approaching South Pelaw and another taken from the opposite direction after the train had entered the junction.
excellent layout and great video; the captions were most helpful to understanding train movements. The climb to Consett must have been steep for 9Fs to need banking!
Thank you. The gradients were as steep as 1:35 in places!
Superb. I can remember the max load for a 37 was 9 loaded 21t hoppers from South Pelaw to Consett [High Yard] so 7 for a 24 is about right. 18 empties down the bank.
Thank you.
Of course, the rules weren't always observed, we've got a photo of a train of 25 21T empties coming down the hill.
Great video, thanks! Please could I ask, what point motors are you using?
Thanks. I’m using servos controlled by MERG Servo 4 circuit boards.
Is this an extension to the existing South Pelaw layout?
No, there are two South Pelaw layouts. One is in EM representing the location in the late 50s/early 60s and is built and exhibited by a group of modellers of which I am a member. The one in this video is my layout in P4 representing the same location as it was in the late 60s through to closure in the 80s.
Ahh, that makes sense. Thank you for the reply!
excellent -Black & White changes one's perspective,Nice to see an ore train with the correct headlamps on the 9F [Class H]
Thanks, we do try to get that sort of thing, along with the signalling, correct.
Very Nice, 24's such a smooth runner!😎
They run beautifully.
Out of curiosity, what are the brake van models you're using? They look great. I've got a Hornby R6508 for mine, but it's marked Western and doesn't have any lamps. I've not been able to find one that's ideal, unfortunately.
Brake vans are from Bachmann
model trains do not get as much credit as they deserve the detailing of the whole set is amazing
Thank you, much appreciated
I like the black & white video. I was once told by a photographer, that he took B&W pictures as they were better for showing off detail than you see with colour. Enjoyable as always. Best, Jason.
Thanks Jason.
Great to see some drone footage from the 1950s!!! This video shows all the excellent lineside details and sidings very well. One of my favourite layouts of all time! John
Thank you, much appreciated.
Never mind 4K, that was sufficiently ore inspiring.
Not sure whether to say thanks or give a big groan 😆 Thank you.
Fantastic, nine bogie hoppers on the iron ore train, spot on...
Thank you, we also have another empty iron ore train hauled by an 01 that has, correctly, just the 8 wagons on.
Thanks for another enjoyable short video. Best, Jason.
Thanks Jason. I'm thinking of doing a much longer, full 'layout tour' video that will from the fiddle yard all the way round the scenic section and back to the fiddle yard...
@@jdmodels1968 That would be great! I look forward to seeing that. Best, Jason.
Where can i view this layout?
There is a thread over on RMWeb but, if you want to actually see the layout we are currently booked to take it to Warley in November this year, York next Easter and Newcastle next November.
Very nice model, but did they really go that fast?
Thank you. In reality, probably not although they were in a hurry to get back to shed :)
Just a fantastic layout with very realistic looking track work. I just recently became aware of the 9F locos (still a British rail novice), but they are one of my favorites.
Thank you, much appreciated.
@@jdmodels1968 Here is my most recent acquisition: ua-cam.com/video/7x-GcDsnnjE/v-deo.html
U have a great layout / But your comments re the seeming superiority of the Diesels (re the the Sulzerr Type 2 )is Flawed, a single 9 F CAN PUT OUT AN Average D.B.H.P 1,400-1,600, Also i have read articles by local trainspotters of the time who noticed poorer performances on these block ore trains when the Sulzer Type 2`s took over. However admittedly the ` Peaks ` are in a superior power class than a 9F, and iam not surprised by the results. P.s I am sure you will be aware that D 200/ Class 40 `s also hauled and banked these trains , but Less well known was a Trial /test train hauled by a Met- Vic Type 2 circa 1961
P.S As said its a superb model , but just thinking is there any chance to fit a smoke generator to the steam locos ?
@@stevenweasel2678 I don't recall the video mentioning that the diesels were superior? Whilst the Class 40s did bank the iron ore trains, they never hauled them as they weren't fitted with the necessary air equipment to operate the wagons doors. Very interested in your comment on the MetVic Type 2 - I have thousands of photos, dozens of books and have read many articles on the line and I have never heard that mentioned at all. They did try Type 2 Claytons of which there are a number photos on the line but no mention of MetVic Type 2s... As for the steam generators, one of the layout team is keen to given them a try but I've never found them to be realistic, the 9Fs would release huge plumes of black smoke when leaving South Pelaw which the current generation of smoke generators are no where near to replicating.
Love the 9F double header. The speed of each loco seems to be well matched. No juddering as I could see. Best, Jason.
Thanks
I adore these kong straight sections 🤩 fantastic layout and great video
Thank you.
Excellent. If you are going prototype the diesel banker was a class 40, steam was either a 9F booked working from Tyne Dock or an 01 but really it's your railway. and eventually the banker was done away with. The Iron Ore trains with 2 x 24 weren't banked and neither were the Redcars with the 100t wagons and 37 x 2. Loaded coal trains were allowed 9 loaded 21t hoppers up the bank with a 37.
I know, fact is I don't have a 9F (or O1 or Q7 or WD all of which banked the iron ore trains at one time or another) or a Class 40 converted to run on P4 track yet...
Just to add, although not on iron ore trains, I do have a couple of photos of 24s banking coal trains so it's bot entirely unheard of.
Lovely Loco!
Thanks, still needs numbering, the Tyne Dock details fitted and good weathering, the locos on the iron ore trains were never clean!
I love the smooth prototypical movement of your Class 24 loco. Does it have a modified drive train or is it standard? I fondly remember diesel brake tenders, that were almost unnoticed until they disappeared. Unfortunately, non survived into preservation. Nice to see one on your model. Best, Jason.
Thanks for that. The 24, from SLW is standard, out of the box. I have 4 of them and they all run fantastically well.
Oh, to have so much real estate that you can have that size layout, in what is probably the best scale to model in; O Scale, though given the choice, I would choose to model in ScaleSeven. Wishing you a happy New Year, Jason.
That's one reason I've not gone 7mm scale as I'd not be able to resist going ScaleSeven, I'll stick with P4. Happy New Year to you too.
This is starting to shape. Impressed with the trackwork & choice of running period. 👍
Thank you, much appreciated.
Nice bit of filming John. Thanks for putting my eastfield on youtube for folk to enjoy.
I always make sure I say whose it is, unlike someone we know...
Good to see you making progress on your P4 layout, John. I am very much in agreement with fully testing track before ballasting, using a variety of locos and rolling stock. I am also an advocate of challenge testing, namely, running up down lines and down up lines. Also propelling rolling stock in both directions too, to ensure that track and turnouts will work faultlessly. The caveats being that wheel sets are to the correct back to back and that locos and rolling stock are suitably weighted, to enable correct running. Looking forwards to the next video. Best, Jason.
Couldn't agree more, every train should be able to run through every route regardless of whether they will or nor on the completed layout...
Looking good John keep up the good work.
Cheers Mick, appreciated.
