Welcome to my bowls channel. I have been playing bowls since 1984, and started coaching about ten years ago. On this channel, produce videos on how to play lawn bowls, aimed at potential new bowlers or those looking for help to improve their game. I love this game and want to encourage everyone to give it a try. It is one of the few sports a whole family can play as there is no age limit, as long as your hand is big enough to hold a bowl. so, watch the videos and come and give this great game a try.

I answer your questions 3 - Some tips on how to adjust weight?
Welcome to my bowls channel. I have been playing bowls since 1984, and started coaching about twelve years ago. On this channel, I intend to produce videos on how to play lawn bowls, aimed at potential new bowlers. Some of these will be for coaching, some will be just informative. I love this game and want to encourage everyone to give it a try. It is one of the few sports a whole family can play as there is no age limit, as long as your hand is big enough to hold a bowl. so, watch the videos and come and give this great game a try.
In this video I explain three ways to try out, in order for you to better adjust the weight when delivering a bowl to a jack at various lengths. I hope this helps.

Today, we had a markers course at the club. Three umpires came and taught 22 players to be markers. It was a great day and everyone enjoyed the experience. Take a look and see how easy it is to become a marker. Thanks to all three umpires from the English Bowls Umpires Association. If you want to take the course, go to www.ebua.co.uk and see when one is happening near you.

I’ve watched your videos since I first started two years ago and have found them very helpful. What I’ve found fascinating with bowls is how people’s delivery are so don’t compared to other ball sports. As you say weight is very difficult to teach/learn and I think people need to watch all different suggestions, practice and then develop what suits them then stick with it practicing to make it consistent. Personally for me I’ve found varying how far I step forward for distance (3 lengths - short, medium or long) then as you describe vary amount of “push” (excellent description) slightly for the finer adjustment. Thanks for all your videos.
Thank you very much
You are very welcome :)
Only started bowling this year. Our club, is in Scotland, doesn't have dots marked on the carpet as you've highlighted. Is this down to individual clubs, is there a conforming need to have dots or is it just a added bonus, so to speak ??
That is interesting, I thought all indoor clubs had markers. Do you play full games, or is there a time limit? If you do not have any time limit games then you don't need markers, but otherwise I would have thought they were essential.
@LawnBowlsforFun Thanks for replying Alec. We play in mini leagues off six teams, triples, 2 hour timed game slots. Maybe it's the unique nature of the club. It's a six rink outdoor club with an additional 3 rink indoor facility. Don't believe there's many other clubs out there that have both outdoor and indoor bowls facilities ! I'll ask the question regarding dot's to someone more experienced in the club the next time I'm down.
Increasing the back swing is not the answer particularly indoors or on an artificial surface........the key to weight control is the amount of follow through......and this is much more controllable.....
I know some agree with what you have said, but a lot think it is very important. I gave three options in the hope that one or more may help new bowlers, but there is no guarantee of course. I have always varied back swing, especially outdoors, where the variance can be more than indoors. To be honest I could have gone a lot deeper into it, but I wanted to keep it short and easy to follow. Thanks for the input, it is always good to hear different viewpoints.
Many Thanks Alec, Like others I found your videos most helpful. I particularly liked the session you did on Touchers and Dead Bowls and Jacks. Is there a chance you could do a video or videos as it is long and can be complicated on Rule 37?. Kind Regards and please keep them coming. Charlie
I will see if I can do so, but it could be a long video as it is quite complex. Especially as I tend to waffle. :)
Thank you Alec, as a beginner, I always find your videos most helpful and a great insight to the skills of the game. Much appreciated
Glad you like them! Appreciate the feedback. :)
I have been asked to fire just to clear the head, so the skip can get into the head. When have been I practising, on the last end I practise firing just at the jack. I find it a nice fun way to finish a practise session
Firing is hard, well I find it so anyway, but yes, it needs practice but is great when it works. ;)
At my club we have a few visual impaired bowlers and the ones who can see the jack, find it easier to see the white jack compared with a yellow jack. There isn't so much issue about white shoes obscuring the jack, as there more and more coloured shoes being worn now.
At my indoor club you have to take less green if it is a short jack, unless the mat is up and the jack is near the T, then it is the same line as a full length jack
I have only just started playing indoor bowls, the weight is the most difficult to master, I find I may bowl reasonably ok for half a game, then I go down hill and find it more difficult to work on my delivery, my woods may end up 2 or 3 yards short, and with a slight adjustment my woods would end up 2or3 yards past the jack, its an understatement to say its frustrating
A good practice drill is to deliver your first bowl while not using a jack, bowling to a short length at first really helps, you just want the bowl to come back to approximately the centre line, that first bowl then becomes your target, bowl your second bowl along the same line using the same weight as before, hopefully it will come to rest near the first bowl, Do the same with your third bowl and so on, small adjustments when necessary ...this develops muscle memory and also stops you from being distracted by the jack, a common mistake is looking at the jack too much instead of your aim point and then you end up bowling narrow... Placing a playing card on the carpet a few yards ahead of you on the delivery line can help, the intention being to deliver the bowl across the card and down the delivery line...this can help with the process of learning visualisation and repeatedly finding the same line. Hope this helps.
Thank you, very informative.
Alec sometimes will put Jack on last spot with mat moved up and take Jack and bowl in ditch to win game

Lawn Bowls is A Great 👍 Sport to Play
Great advice. I am from Texas and never had lawn bowled until last year in Tarporley UK. I was told I was probably the first Texan ever to lawnbowl at Travelers Pub. I could grow to really enjoy this sport I think.
Well done Alec, another great tutorial for both the beginner and even for those with experience. You do make bowling look easy by the way but of course it’s certainly not.
Another interesting tutorial, I’ve been playing bowls indoor and outdoor for 10 years and I didn’t know there were two or more weights of Jack. Thanks for explaining it, keep you videos coming please.
Thanks for this Alec very informative
I have found at our club everyone has their own delivery style. As I have straighter running bowls I like to visulise the line to the jack then draw my eye back to a target point two or three metres in front of the mat. Most top players seem to use this method.
@@grahamsmithbsc yes, I agree, everyone has their own method. If it works then there is no reason to change. I do much the same as you, but stick to two metres for indoors. New bowlers benefit from this method but some prefer to do something different which as long as it works then stick to it. 👍
How would you address your aiming point with mat position and Jack length? If you're standing on the outside, inside or centre of the mat, the aiming point will need to move. Jack length will also change the aiming point. I think it's a really good method for beginners to learn about correct line, but personally would struggle to focus on an aim point that close to the mat when considering other factors like mat position and jack length.
@@davidthomas3006 it is fair to say there is a lot more to it than I have covered, but this is aimed at beginners and so I keep it simple. You are of course correct, especially for jack length, but my first concern is how many new players tend to bowl narrow, so ensuring they have an aiming point about 15” to the left or right of the second dot (two metre mark) ensures that they will be roughly in the correct place with regard to line. Of course, this will not suit every player, some still prefer to have an aiming point much further down the rink, or even the end of the rink, which is fine, I just find new players who struggle with line indoors tend to benefit from trying this method. Good points though, and thanks for the reply. 👍
Looking forward to your video on weight control indoors. Hardest part of the indoor game as far as I'm concerned!
@@grahamsmithbsc I agree with you. I hope to do it soon, it is top of the list. 👍
When I just started to bowl : Alex Marshall visited our club. I asked him about his aiming point. He said he takes a point at the bank and then shortens it to jackhigh . So he made himselve an virtual aiming point next to the jack. He said that the aiming point and weight are all in 1 point. Easier to control your weight ; because you can see it when you do your delivery.
@ can’t argue with that, he is one of the best players ever. It is surprising how many top players use different methods, but they find something works and stick to it. I find some new players use that method and it works for them, others struggle, this method is aimed at those who struggle. Hopefully it should help, but not always.
@@LawnBowlsforFun Loved your video and your passion for our sport btw.
I find there are marks on the carpet tbf
Is it heavier than the normal indoor jack? I have never played short mat, but yes, I should have mentioned that. Thanks for pointing it out. 👍
Yes, a short mat bowl jack is heavier than an indoor one, as far as I can remember, been a long time snice I played short mat. You should give short mat bowls a try it's a fun game to play
There is a 3rd jack even heavier, which is used in Short Mat Alec
Very interesting
Love these videos. I have only been playing a couple of years and always return to these tips.
Thanks for that, I really appreciate it. Glad you find the help. 👍
Thank you. I haven’t bowled for at least 15 years and just getting back into it. Struggling with consistency but will certainly try this method.
Thanks for the comment, let me know how you get on.
@ Gave it a go whilst playing yesterday. Definitely helped a lot. Thank you.
@ that is great to hear. Thanks for the feedback. 👍
Thank you mate -- I am keen to learn as I have reached that age and in a retirement village and want to expand my horizons - Thank you Warren
Thanks, glad to have helped.
Hi, we have just had our green re-laid and probably will have to use our wet weather mats at the start of next season. It is such a long time since we used them we have forgotten how to place them. I have checked on UA-cam but cannot find any info. Can you help please.
@@petersaunders747 Hi Peter, at our club we did make sure we followed the guidelines provided in the crystal mark fourth edition rules, page 15, 6.1.5 which in a nutshell means the nearest part of the groundsheet is placed on the mat line, so the 2 metre line, so that the front of the bowls mat is in line with the nearest part of the groundsheet so players bowl on the groundsheet itself. I did see once the mat placed on top of the groundsheet but that is wrong. I hope that makes sense. Obviously the groundsheet cannot be moved once placed. No one likes groundsheets but sometimes they are needed as you know, and in your case it is definitely worth the inconvenience. Regards Alec
After I sent my question to you I was talking to my wife who did remember exactly how a groundsheet is placed when used. Thanks anyway for your reply. Regards.
Very informative. Raewyn, Australia😊
Quick question....if a bowl drops into the ditch and is not a 'toucher'...should it be taken out of the ditch...put on the bank?
@@alberttickle1106 yes, it is a dead bowl and must be removed. In addition, if by dropping into the ditch, it disturbs another bowl or the jack, the disturbed bowl or jack is put back where it was. 🙂
How many bowls can you play on the trial end....just the 2 that you show in the video?
Mostly it is two bowls, but when you use four bowls in a game (singles and pairs) you can use all four. 👍
@@alberttickle1106 whoops, I replied on my other account, yes, that was me. 😊 Not the first time I have done that. 😂
I understood it that you should stay on the mat to watch how the bowl travels and comes to a rest, then step off?
@@alberttickle1106 yes, the rules do state that, but too many players tend to linger a bit too long I’m my opinion. I don't really see the point in just standing there and possibly delaying the next player. I have got into the habit of leaving the mat once the my bowl is about half way down the green, but only stepping to one side and I still watch what my bowl is doing. At least the next player can start to position himself if he wants to. I think I started doing that as often in evening games the light starts to go and I like to get on with the game. But that is just my view, others do stay on the mat as you say, which is fine as long as they move once the bowl has stopped. Thanks for the comment. 👍
Thank you so much for this introduction to bowls..I am a total newbie to the game and the complexities of this fascinating game are explained well. I particularly like your explanation of the various roles of the players. Logical and common sense in abundance , well done for creating the time to address some of the issues we newbies (older newbie in my case ) encounter . My location is in Norfolk so as winter is almost upon us I am restricted to the indoor rink until next year . Let’s hope I notice some positive progression by then ! 28:24
Thanks for the feedback, I am glad it has helped. Visited Norfolk in June, it was lovely.

Hi Alec thanks for your great videos . Can you confirm , do you only re spot the jack if when you bowl the jack it goes out of the rink or do you re spot the jack if it’s hit during play and goes into the rink either side ? Thank you
Hi Valerie. If you deliver the jack and it goes out of the rink, the opposing team get to place the jack where they want it. If the jack goes out of the rink during play, it is re-spotted on nearest re-spot.
Fantastic video... very informative.. keep videos coming!!
does the line change for different length jacks
@@RichardBloyce since the bowl only turns when it starts to slow down, and on shorter jacks it has less time to do so, the line can be narrower, slightly. But it also depends on the green, or the rink you are playing on as the running surface can affect how the bowl runs, and they are often different. Generally though, you do take less green on a shorter jack, and more on a longer jack. But be careful not to over compensate. 🙂
Is yhe camera doing weird things because the red marker looks half the distance from the yellow compared to the blue. Cant imagine this was intentional?
@@slippyg yes, the line is different on that rink. That is not uncommon, as the green may have undulations on the green that affect the line you need to take. Every rink is different, especially outdoors.
Looks like the 4s grouped the best. Would've been interesting to weigh each bowl to see if they actually are exactly what is quoted by the manufacturer. Expect maybe there's a tolerance.
When I have weighed individual bowls from the same set they are all the same. I think if they were not they would be banned. :) But I knew someone who played with a bowl that had a big chip in it, I bet it was a few grams less.
Does the aiming line differ for a short jack and a long jack
Very slightly yes. But it is very marginal.
FIRST... Im not playing NOWHERE ROUN a nigga with FOUR BALLS... thats FIRST...
Hello Alec, as a newbie to the sport of bowls I've been working my way through your wonderful videos which has given me so much insightful tips explained by your good self in such a relaxing and informative manner. Would it at all be possible if you could perhaps make a video of yourself being involved in an actual game against one of your friends where you could explain your gameplan, strategy and particular reasons for matt, jack and individual bowl selections? Even and end or two I feel would give all us new to this wonderful game a really good idea of how to put all your wonderful specific aspects of bowls all together in actual gameplay. Keep up the excellent work Alec, and thankyou again.
I play in Brisbane Australia. If you lose a Club singles comp match, you are required to mark the next match, in which your winning opponent plays. You are only allowed to answer certain questions from the players. The players must measure and if there is a concern, it MUST be passed to the umpire on duty.
Now that is interesting, and sounds like a good idea to me. 👍
A good day, learnt a lot. Nice to have a chat with yourself as well Alec.
It was a good day. And great to meet you and the others, who I know all enjoyed the day.
Thank you Alec, I really appreciate all the explanations.Greetings from South Africa! ❤
I came here to see what EXACTLY determines the distance between the jack and a bowl... and I'm sorry to say that after watching this, I still don't know :(. For example, is the distance the shortest distance between any two points on the jack and bowl? In that case the line piece between those points could be not horizontal. Also, by pressing the tape case on the mat, the first part IS horizontal - which makes it weird to wave the cord or tape around in a non-horizontal way. When the jack was in the ditch, you even measured the distance with a kink in the cord: going around the actual edge of the ditch- that wasn't a straight line at all, while the other bowl was measured using a straight line. That doesn't feel very fair to me.
Hi, Thanks for the question. A good one too. The distance between the jack and the bowl is the shortest distance to any part of the bowl. The measure is always at the same point on the jack, as the fixed point on the tape measure is always centre on the jack. However, with the bowl it is not so easy because of the shape of the bowl and how it sits on the green, so the point of the measure (at the bowl end) must be moved around to determine which part of the bowl you are measuring is closest to the jack. I obviously have not explained that well enough, so maybe it is something I should redo. With regard to the measure in the ditch which has the ditch edge to take into account. Yes, the bowl in the ditch when measured to a jack also I n the ditch is fairly easy at it is a straight line. However, the bowl that is still on the green has the ditch edge to contend with which makes it harder, as you cannot measure through the ditch, it has to be over the edge. This means that the bowl on the green has a slight disadvantage. Agreed, it is tough, but it is not possible to measure through a solid surface, you have to go over it. That has always been the way it is done, which may seem unfair, but is is the same for both teams and is unlikely ever to change. As I said, it is tough, but part of the game. Good questions, and thanks for both of them. 👍
I enjoyed marking, so decided to take my Surrey County Markers Course & am now a Surrey registered marker, I’ve marked county Q/F & S/F matches, plus constantly asked to mark club matches, especially by the best players
Great to hear, and just confirms how much someone can get from marking. Well done indeed.
