A Custom Dark Navy Patina on Santoni Loafers

A beautiful Santoni Loafer with "faded jeans" patina...The client just didn't wear them. The patina was a little too light and a little too bold for him. He still wanted a blue shoe but more dark and formal. I gave these a custom Dark Navy patina and was really happy with the final coloration. I got them more symmetrical and quite a bit darker giving them a more formal look that could almost pa...

How to: Bar lacing and Berluti knot on dress shoes.
Переглядів 24 тис.Рік тому
I've been asked a few times how I lace and tie my shoes so here it is. Bar lacing with a Berluti knot. I use this on almost every pair of shoes. This is how to do it with an odd number of eyelets, usually 5. With 6 eyelets you do it the same way but don't do the first cross underneath and start with even lace lengths. Hope this helps a few of you out!

Tahn says the 2M last is a “high instep” last - would you say it’s a high instep, or just a “not low” instep? I have to use tongue pads and insoles in my TLB Mallorca oxfords.
❤Best refinish project l have seen in 40 years. I worked with leather from age 15 to age 35 and loved every minute. Projects were western gun holsters for shotguns, rifles, and briefcase plus wallets. 50 years later the tool work looks a few days old if they were properly maintained. One customer came back to have me rehandstitch their wallet. When completed it looked like new. Leather is the best. I have some shoes and moccasins over 35 years old. Your work is beautiful! Great video and thanks for sharing the project with us.
@@gwmattos very kind words my friend and I really appreciate it. I wish all projects could turn out this good... definitely one of my best.

Pretty awesome what you're doing. I have a pair of Weejuns Loafers. I like them, but i don't like the painted finish. It's a good quality leather, but coated with paint. I guess you named it Patentleather in the US. Is it possible to strip that layer of colour down and dye the leather?
@@zobbyzockbrecht2469 Yes it can be done. Lighter colors are easier and the darker the color the more difficult. I would not attempt black. Patent leather doesn't strip or dye as well as full grain calf leather but it is still possible to strip with acetone.
I have a pair of Gaziano & Girling boots, I wonder if these shoe trees would fit?
@@Pertemba40 I'm sure they could work ok but higher end brands like GG often have lasted shoe trees they offer for them. Lasted trees would be the best of course.

I greatly appreciate this video, and it has convinced me to follow through with this purchase after months of deliberation. At ~$400 for this quality and level of customization, I am quite pleasantly shocked. I'll be customizing a very similar pair to yours, as I've been looking for a design of the like. While it would have been more informative to have seen you try them on, I appreciate the depth you went into for this review. Great video!
@@PlazDreamweaver so glad you liked the video. I may have to do a long term review video of all the brands showing the fit and look after a year or more of wear.
Was a huge fan of Timber Lee until I went to order 2 pair of shoes from him this month, and after he insisted I send him a photo of my feet and various measurements, I never heard back from him. Customer service is a critical part of being a successful business, so just be forewarned.

@@Carnivoracious-rm8tl Haha It sure isn't.
Better than Carmina ??
@@cuauhtemocbolanos6100 To me yes. Carmina costs more and has less refined construction and details. Carmina does use Horween shell which many claim to be the best but I haven't found any real difference between the shell tanneries.
El trabajo y la manufactura esta al nivel de Carmina, el único “problema” dependiendo de tus gustos es que usan Cordovan Roccado en lugar de Horween, pero eso es elección personal. La construcción es de muuuuy buena calidad no te preocupes.
@@cuauhtemocbolanos6100 Carmina uses Horween shell which is known to be the best but honestly I can't tell much difference. Shell from all the factories looks good to me. These shined up the fastest of any I have and think the design details and craftsmanship is better than Carmina and a few hundred $ less.
If they have to work in international market they have to improve their return and exchange policies. Shoes look great for the price point.
Wow, just amazing! You brought these shoes back to life. Deep color, beautiful and shiny. Can you please write down which materials you used, and is there a difference according to the color of the skin?
I'm glad you liked it. I think I go over all the materials during the course of the video. I always use Acetone to strip the shoes. As far as dye colors that can vary but I generally use Fiebings buckskin as a base color then use darker colors like walnut or dark brown to add burnishing. For shining I use Saphir mirrorgloss in neutral on everything and then like to use some saphir dark brown just on the toe tip. I would have to re-watch the video myself to see what colors were used but I generally say or show it as I go along.
Fantastic video! Really enjoyed the mirror shine! If you could help me out please, what size would you recommend with a us 11 tennis shoe order?
I'm glad you liked the video. I really wouldn't be able to give advice on sizing. It would be best to reach out to them directly. I'm not sure what may have changed in their sizing or last shapes since I got this pair over 2 years ago and no longer have the shoes.
I just purchased a pair and I emailed the team asking them what size they'd recommend then sent them my measurement and they recommended me the UK9 for my US 10.5 feet. Very helpful and responded within 24 hours
@@rushaddaboo616 That sounds about right on sizing. Hopefully you will love them!
creases come back after a couple of wears, that's normal for this kind of leather
@@ammartinezguzman Really that's true for all leathers I think. The creases came back some as expected but with the steam shrinking they came back much less and in a more visually pleasing way.
Horrible company; shoes have poor finish and their customer service is terrible. Also, they take down all negative reviews from their website, which is why all their products seem to be so well liked. Avoid like the plague!
@@SundownCity Yeah I didn't love the Patina and the leather quality was not the best and they squeaked like crazy when I walked. I think I included the squeaking in the video.
The walnut color you've brush, what was that exactly?

How did you learn to do this? TIA
@@gerryaustin8687 Self taught. I discovered patina probably 6 or so years ago. I was already shining shoes and doing minor restorations and ran across a random patina video and I thought....ooo that looks fun, I think I could do that. So I got some dyes, acetone and craft brushes and went at it. I started with thrift store and eBay shoes until I felt comfortable to work on new shoes.
@@mbshoedoc Thanks for the answer. I have watched a number of your videos and bought a $25 pair of Allen Edmonds brown oxfords off Ebay with the hope of stripping them and dyeing them a deep Navy blue. Thanks for the answer and inspiration
@@gerryaustin8687 I have a few navy blue patina videos posted that may help. Blue can be tricky. You go too light and the first layers lean green but then it quickly can get too dark and look almost black.

what type of paint do you need for leather to make the patina? is there a brand or any leather paint?
@@yaakovhassoun8965 You don't want to use paint which is acrylic. Angelus sells paint but they are mostly used on athletic shoes. For leather dress shoes you want to use leather Dye from Fiebings, Angelus or Saphir. They all work equally well for me.
@@mbshoedoc thank you sir. you make it look so nice and approachable to get great results. @@Thunk00 I've had no issues with quality or communication. I spoke with them direct through Instagram vs ordering off the website. Loving this pair.
Wow. This is my first time to see the hand painting of crust leather in action. The process seems deceptively simple but obviously very detail-oriented. And the results speak for themselves. There's none of the plastickiness or crustiness that I thought were necessarily part of a surface-level hand dye job. Beautiful. How do shoes like these hold up to fairly hard use? Personally, my feet can't help themselves but find and crash against every step, furniture leg, and threshold that comes within half a mile of them.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Most of the shoes I own now are all hand dyed patinas and I haven't had any trouble with them holding up over time. You treat scuffs and scrapes the same way you would a factory dyed shoe with colored cream and polish. Its really no different for hand dyed crust leather.
