The tiniest naval gun in the world
Переглядів 843 місяці тому
With a bore diameter of a mere 2,3mmØ this is quite possibly the tiniest firing naval gun in the world. The model represents a late 15th century breech loading port piece, as would have been carried by the explorers on the early voyages of discovery.

Funnily enough it is the typical tragedy of the director buggering up the nature of the battle for cinematic interpretation. A bit mean not showing the Spanish fleet in all that, they were there too.

Ahí perecieron nuestros mejores almirantes: Gravina, Churruca.

The fact that Napoleon bastard had to be stopped is a certainty and I respect Nelson!! His death is too high a price paid by the English for his annihilation!! But, from what appears in this film, the English used children in naval battles!! Is it really true??!! That's incredible!! I hope it's just a fantasy of the producers of this film, otherwise it's an ordinary English crime!!

You can see a lock of his hair framed in the dining room on the royal yacht Britannia, now a museum ship in Edinburgh. Good battle scenes and the story is a Swiss musketeer shot Nelson but the part about a midshipman then killing him is pure fiction. However some of the British boys at Trafalgar were apparently as young as 5.

A Patch? He never wore a bloody patch. 🤣 He didn't lose his eye, he was blinded in his right eye at the battle of Calvi on the island Corsica in 1794. By the time of Trafalgar he was starting to regain some sight, mostly light and shapes.

When will England make a couple of films starring Admiral Nelson about the attempted invasion of the Canary Islands or the attempted occupation of La Coruña? I am very interested in seeing what caused those magnificent English military campaigns to be unsuccessful. Or better yet, a great film about the battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741 whose protagonist was that English admiral, described as undefeated, called Vernon. I am also very interested in her, and if it were not too much of a bother it would not be necessary to say that after the battle he did not return to England for a year, that is a minor fact. For such films, which describe glorious pages of English military history, no one better than Ridley Scott or Cristpher Nolan who did a magnificent job in Dunkirk turning one of the most shameful defeats into a moral victory. P.S.- A film about the combats between 12 English ships and the Spanish galleon "El Glorioso" wouldn't be bad either. Or the capture of the double English convoy of 1780, action of August 9, 1780 or battle of Cape Santa María (1780) occurred within the framework of the War of Independence of the United States, and more specifically, in the Anglo-American War. Spanish (1779-1783). Thank you very much for your support.

This Nelson in the movie is too tall & too fat. And he is too kind. Nelson was never a gentleman. He had a lot of luck, fighting against the enemy's slackers & amateurs. When he found pro-opponents, he got defeats. He was no genius, only British pirate propaganda called him that. Nelson's easy plan at Trafalgar was established by a real genius & top-seaman, Duncan, who defeated the Dutch with this tactic at Camperdown 8 years before.

Horatio himself deferred to Blake being our greatest sea captain. Before Blake we weren't really that much cop, truth be told. For all the tales of Drake, and the 'Revenge'; it was "God blew; and they were scattered" that was the actual story of our war with Phillip II. Blake MADE the tradition that could be blown in an afternoon; he MADE the English navy's predominance. It is far more difficult to START a ball rolling than KEEP it rolling. Unfortunately he was the General-at-Sea for a failed and hated revolution and regime and was memory-holed in the aftermath.

Like the scenes overall, but to think they reached out the port hole to load the cannon is ridiculous. They loaded and then ran the gun up to firing position. The British could often fire 3 shots for every two of their enemies, sometimes more. With the addition of prize money for the crew, everyone aboard had incentive to win. Below decks were painted red so the blood of battle wouldn't show and distract the men. The marines would have been in the tops as sharp shooters and noone is going to hang from the ratlines to shoot a rifle. Those were hard men in hard times with crew often being the off-scouring of jails. But all you can do is admire them.
