    I'm interested in learning more about it. I'm currently in the interviewing process for a job doing credit risk modelling. My degree is general economics with regional economics & mathematical economics as my concentrations. I mostly did government work, consulting & contracting on construction, security, disaster & transportation projects; but recently applied to several commercial banks with two responding back so far. The statistics & econometrics I understand but using programs such as sql & python to develop models is something I haven't done before. Prior work I used microsoft office, spss, sas, stata, & planswift. I've done some computer science courses & had to learn java, visual basics, & c but I've never had to really use these skills.

      Thanks for watching and glad you enjoy my videos. 😊 When it comes to coding, a degree is not necessary but you will need to demonstrate that you can code well enough to manipulate data frames (for example, using SQL, pandas in Python, or data.table in r). The technical part of the interview could have some data manipulation questions. I suggest looking for online tutorials and practice questions on manipulating/summarizing tabular data. I used datacamp at one point but now there are many options out there.

    Hi Laura! thank you for such an informative video. I have one question if you can answer. I am pursuing a bachelor's in Statistics from one of the top universities in Canada. Do I need to have a masters in statistics to land a job in credit risk modelling. Thank you so much for your time. Please continue making such useful videos.

    • @CareerChatswithLaura
      @CareerChatswithLaura 2 роки тому

      Hi Samir, thanks for watching! My recommendation is that if you do not have a Master’s degree, try to get some co-op experience in banks in analytics areas and build your network. A Master’s degree is not 100% necessary but if two applicants have similar experiences and one has a Master’s and the other doesn’t, then the hiring manager may prefer the candidate with the Master’s degree.

    Great advice, I feel like changing these habits will also help improve your overall happiness in addition to building your confidence. I find that for #4, making excuses is often an easy way to avoiding accountability for enabling other people's poor behaviour. Would you say there can be times where the presenting the changes you'd like them to make is not worth the time/effort? Or do you believe that it is usually the right choice to raise the issues with them?

    • @CareerChatswithLaura
      @CareerChatswithLaura 3 роки тому

      Thanks Steven! Yes I believe so too. I think presenting the changes you'd like someone to make will depend on the situation and your relationship with that person. There is definitely no blanket rule to speak up or not. For example, if that person has a tendency to react violently, then your safety would definitely come first and you need to find an alternative way to get yourself out of that situation. But generally, if you are at least physically safe, by presenting the changes you'd like them to make, you are actually testing whether or not it is worth your time to continue what ever relationship you have with that person. If you clearly state what you want and they clearly don't want to do that, then you know not to invest time and effort to try to change them and you can decide how much effort you want to put in a relationship with that person knowing they won't change.

    Growing up in Asian cultures, where at certain times competition for achievements were cut throat from an early age, we were often discouraged from expressing certain feelings (hurt, jealousy, sadness, anger etc) because they were seen as weak or bad. Which in-turn means we never learnt how to properly sort them out growing up. To make matters worse, parents also had a hard time talking about those same feelings with their children because they were worried that it could undermine their authorative figure. I hope that as these subjects become more mainstream, the next generations can learn from the previous' mistakes.

    • @CareerChatswithLaura
      @CareerChatswithLaura 3 роки тому

      Thanks for this thought-provoking comment! You make a good point about the authority role that Asian parents play. It does make it harder to talk about feelings with an authoritative figure. Hopefully you transform your relationship with your parents as you grow up.
