Used to take VLines to rural Victoria. Loved the trips. Miss them very much nowadays.

Couldn’t expect the track to be in any better condition in this State. If the CMFEU have a say it will be all new track. $$$

For the sake of it, wouldn't you think there would be a preservation society to maintain and repair the tracks along with some state government funding. LOL, LOL. To let these old lines dissappear is a crying shame. With the interest in railways the way it is now surely there's something that could be done.

It's no more the Spirit of Progress than flying mid air. Carriages missing, other non Spirit cariages added. It's not a true representation. Only streamliners should be used, and its time all the existing Spirit carriages were brought together in one stable, and restored to make as near possible an accurate representation of this great train.

I remember spending a whole week up in Yarrawonga preparing for this tour

2 names I still remember well about the trains that ran in the Victorian Railways ( VR ) Southern Aurora and the Spirit of Progress. Of course I was very young at this time. But, it's something I remember well, even IF I can't remember where I put my car keys 😂

Nice video I was up there 4 days prior to both relax and to see the train. When my older brother saw the train, he was disappointed with how there was an N Class leading.

i reckon i saw you at yarrawonga when it arrived, i was standing at the silos under the loading point. were you at the end of the grass mound extension of the platform?

Two things. If memory serves me correctly ARTC upgraded and gauge converted the Oaklands - Benalla line in the early 2000s. Look like no maintenance has occurred since. One of the NSW railway preservation societies ran a diesel railcar right out to Oaklands a year or two after the gauge conversion.

I recall a couple of years later from 1976 onwards as a trainee engineman (dynon loco) it was hauled by as we (engineman) called them in those days new X Class locos-50 etc, on the still referred to as the 'Old' big wheel roster, including the Intercapital Day Light, Aurora to Albury and our VR Locos were off for a change over and return light engine to Wodonga, rest job and return to Melbourne the next day etc. Still the old VR as it was known then! They spoiled it with that rotten slug, high nose T-Class, what's next for them, flat top T-Class or maybe an old W-Class JERRY

It’s amusing to think that this is T387’s second time in preservation, having previously been with the Yorke Peninsula Railway in South Australia between 1992 and 2003.
