- Join us on a rewind to April 2022 as we look back on the 61 year history of 'Australia's premier luxury train'. The Southern Aurora was an overnight sleeper train that ran between the country's biggest cities, Sydney and Melbourne.

**Note that the Sydney to Melbourne Express ceased services entirely in November 1993 (not August 1986) that's on me, sorry!
This makes me want to subscribe to your channel right now, because I’m from Euroa 😁🚂
Great job, very well put together video!
Fantastic video Max, was an awesome sight and sound on that day. Was an awesome chase too.
This was a huge train. It had 2 diners. 2 lounge cars. I know. I was part of the volunteer crew. I washed more dishes than ever in my life. A great experience.
What a great name ..😊
Beautifully restored.
This passed my school at 8am everyday in the 70s...followed by the " spirit" at 830.
I travelled several times Melbourne to Yass, I t was a beautiful ride.
Mate absolutely love your videos! Keep up the work!
I remember travelling on the SA, it felt unusual to depart in the evening while still daylight, and to watch nightfall while on the train. Amazing to think it may have been on some of the carriages seen here
Wandering why they don't run this again
Incredible, all that weight baring down on that steel bridge.
I travelled on it many times in my student days. There was actually a third overnight train put on in peak holiday periods. This extra train took those passengers who couldn't get on the Southern Aurora or the Spirit of Progress. It was a simple NSW "Mail Train" with side corridors and seating compartments. I can't remember whether it had food or not. It was not air-conditioned but did have the old metal containers filled with heated sand to warm your feet during the cold night as well as a glass bottle of water (with drinking glasses) in each compartment.
When will Australia catch up with the rest of the world and have high speed trains?
Probably never, as between capitals the population is sparse with no intermediate cities plus the cost of building them. For point to point travel air would be so much cheaper.
@brackenboy6321 Rubbish. Airlines fly to Canberra, Albury, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Ballina etc, so there must be a demand for quick travel to places located between the capital cities. Europe is rapidly expanding their regional and intercity rail network successfully competing with budget airlines.
Great stuff . . .
The Sydney /Melbourne Expresses did not terminate till the 1990s.
Thanks for reminding me that I stuffed the dates up, I pinned a comment with the amendment.
👍👍👍❤🤍💚
It doesn't mean shit if it ceases to operate anymore
Jaysus mate can you just talk normally and drop that absurd affectation !
