Would this work on waves in the ocean?
I’ve never tried it, but it’s a funky shape for the ocean that I’d imagine would be pretty difficult to surf
I hate the design of the release mechanism. I think they need to adopt and integrate the release system that the kiteboarding industry uses. The system I built using my the release mechanism from my kite lease is very intuitive and easily released under tension and I can verify it works as I had to use it this spring on scout wave at 2700cfs
Does it work under low/no tension? I experimented with some other release mechanisms, but I couldn’t find something that works under both low AND high tension
Wave shape looks great this day.
Right? When the flow are right, it can be pretty good even if it's small
Well done! I have a Peterson. tomahawks too! You described it perfectly🤙
Ben, we do not see "eye to eye" on much of anything these days but I do appreciate your honest testing of your leash systems. Obviously much more testing on leashes of all kinds is needed in USA university controlled lab settings. Thanks for starting to make people think about leashes and the limits of leashes instead of blindly thinking that a leash is 100% safe to use for river surfing.
Noice
Man I really appreciate your reviews. Is the Scout wave still surfing?
Thanks! I hear that after the 14th there should be a bump in flows that’ll make Scout wave pretty rippable all winter. We’ll have to wait and see to really know though
:47 That's the secret to staying in the wave.
do a little wiggle
Rustang? Where's the Duster?
lol, in the driveway
@riversurflab any upcoming soft rack reviews?
nope, no reviews of soft anything in the near future ;)
I tried a Peterson tomo esque shape that was ridiculous!!!
!!!
Goated
where is this i need to try it
Salida, CO
@ is it year round?
technically, yes. but it's best in the spring and summer
Hey Ben, Do you have any reviews for 2024? New wave, and some of the new boards on the Market. For example, all the New Badfish white boards like Whiskey throttle, wave charmer, DNS, and Libtechs Chop, Crak',n etc...
I'm currently working on content for 2024 including an update for the Scout wave. There are a bunch of new boards, but a lot of them aren't very interesting to me personally. The Wave Charmer and DNS are too long for my liking. The Chop and Crak'n and many of the other Lib Tech wake surfers have very wide tails (which aren't great for rail to rail transitions) and lack a center fix box (I'm not a huge fan of twin fins in the river). The Whiskey Throttle seemed like the perfect board for me, but when I surfed it I felt like there wasn't enough board under my front foot. I'll probably give it another try next year on Scout at different levels.
Stoked to see what you recommend for the new wave!! it has been so good!!!
Yep! It was epic this year. I'm working on a 2024 video for Scout. Spoiler: the recommendations aren't much different than 2023
Twin fins have always been easiest for 360s. A thruster will give more stability
yep. I find it very difficult to spin with a full size center fin. but a large center fin is great for learning
Shred Locks, what do you think about the re-design of the wave?
I love it. When it's maxing out and turning into a foam pile half the time, it's the biggest most insane river wave I've ever surfed.
Is that a Dart? It looks Mopar.
It is a mopar. A '70 Duster with a 340
@@riversurflab siiiiick
Dude, great video. We've seen you out on the wave. We nicknamed you Shred-Locks. :-)
Thanks! shred.locks is my IG handle lol
Which lifejacket you use ?
I use the Kokatat Maximus Centurion. It's high floatation for big water, but also isn't too bulky to paddle
Fighting tooth and nail to get something like this in Columbus Ohio
It takes time, but it's totally worth it.
Just snagged the freak flag bean bag in a 5’4, hoping it will be enough volume for me to paddle and pop up while still being fun at scout esque high performance waves.
It’s always hard to find a balance with boards that are trying to work at multiple types of waves. I’m sure it’ll work at Scout. Paddle to catch waves and popping up will depend on your skill. Personally I like finding the best boards for specific waves… which leaves me with a huge quiver
Have you ever surfer the Sol Scepter or Sol Scepter XL? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on these boards!
I haven’t. I can see how it would be comparable to the Shuvit and the Snapper
Nice
Thank you! This is just the video I needed. I have been surfing the Office wave for years on a Badfish 6' 11" riversurfer. I want to graduate to Scout Wave 2.0 this year. The 6' 11" riversurfer seems to require a wave with a foam pile and just washes off a smooth wave like Scout.
Big water glenwood what you recommend?
Depends on how "big" it is. For most seasons in the 10-15k range, I prefer either the Lib Tech Freak Flag Bean Bag, or the Badfish Shuvit
Loving the videos! What fins do you like the most?
It definitely depends on how steep the wave is, and how likely I am to hit my fins on something/how durable my board is. My default is using a couple of these www.coloradoriversurf.com/product/-fcs-oxford-fiberglass-/8 and a small center like www.coloradoriversurf.com/product/-fcs-staircase-step-fiberglass-/15 full discloser: I designed and sell those fins. There are many different fins that will work well. Anything with a similar size and shape should work well on the river.
it's like a mini SUP for kids. Pretty sick, thanks for the review.
Totally. Someone small enough could definitely use it as a sup
Great info! I assumed this would be good on the scout wave but not anymore! That wave farmer though..
keep an eye out for the video next week. I'll compare a bunch of boards I've surfed on Scout
@@riversurflab Sweet! That would be great. Any chance you can do a TL surf or CO surf supply board?
@@brianfitzpatrick8481 I’ll be talking a bit about the TL Crusty Booger in the next video. I’ve never been super impressed by co surf supply boards. I see them surfed all the time at rrp, but like the Shuvit those waves don’t require all the extra volume they have
Very cool review. Thank you!
My pleasure!
Stoked you’re back! We need these reviews as they’re super helpful when picking out a board. Can you do the lib tech whirlpool?
Yep! I had a 5'4" Whirlpool for part of last year, but decided it was too big for me. My plan is to pick up a 5'2" version this year.
Welcome back! Could you review some high volume boards for mushy midwest waves? Thanks!
Do you have any particular boards in mind? There aren’t a lot of options out there that are high volume and short enough for the river
@@riversurflab I was curious if you could review the newer Hala Peno, you reviewed the older one a while ago, the newer Peno has that 2" step-down style inflatable rail. And there isn't anyone out there that has reviewed if those rails really make a difference. Thanks!
@@cutter5733 I did a long term demo of the new Peno when it first came out. I’ll have to see if they’ve made any changes to it since. I felt like the thickness was overkill and made the board feel too corky. As far as the rails, I think they’re a great idea but it’s hard to tell the difference on the mushy, foamy waves that it works best in. It still felt like it was turning around the fins rather than using the rails to carve. If there’s a new version, I’ll give it a look!
Super usefull!!! There is so little on the net about what board is best for these "city waves" Could you post the litrage of the tomahawk if you have it? Thank a lot!
This was really helpful!!! Love the intro about the wave too. Haven’t surfed it yet but want to!
What board do you recommend for a beginner at RRP or Salida?
A foam board in the 5’ range would be a good beginner board for both RRP and Salida. The Stump is a solid choice. If you’re a smaller person, the 54 Special. The Bombdrop would also make a good first board
@@riversurflab Sweet! Thanks for the info. I'm on the stump and it's been great. What do you think of the new Lib Tech Whirlpool?
Thanks for this review! I've tried out a couple river waves (Boise and Bend) with my usual ocean quiver and have struggled. Can't wait to check out Chelan in the summer.
I just bought one. What fins do you recommend? I like quads. Have you tried quads?
Can you carve pretty well on this board?
Hey man, love your video! Got a small low pressure wave near to me and started surfing last year. I am looking for exactly a shape like the strongwater! And was so happy when i found your video an you reviewed such a board! Unfortunately it seems like strongwater went out of business? Are you aware of similar boards? Best from Germany Eddy
Chelon?! Haha
Good info. Not a surfer. Waterskier. Seems like sharper rails would be better for faster wave. A little more rocker might be more responsive too.
Just picked one up myself. I’d watch some reviews of this please stay updating!
I have 2 libs and want the bean bag smallest size and this then be set up with full arsenal of durable boards. Thanks for the video!
The durability of lib tech boards is SO nice
Looking forward to your review post ride 🤙🏽
Pray for some good snowpacks this winter! This board needs some high water on the big waves for river surfing.
Quality review of the wave and boards!!!... Any thoughts on: the cost per session; line-up (crowded/not crowded/abilities/etc); over all user vibe (as compared to river surfing, especially free vs. pay); & how if need be to improve this type of particular wavepool surfing safari (cost, location, months open, etc.).... Thanks
Good questions! I'll try my best to give you my opinions. Cost: as someone from out of town, surfing a bunch of sessions over a few days, the price seemed reasonable. If I lived locally and wanted to surf everyday, it might get expensive, but they do offer season pass deals. Line up: some sessions were crowded, others barely had anyone. If you're worried about crowds, the early and late sessions were always empty. But even during the crowded sessions, I got plenty of surfing time. Vibe: super good. Lots of people new to the sport and stoked. Improvements: I think you nailed it. We need more City Wave locations in the US and we need them opened year round! The only thing that would be nice for them to improve is to find a way to make the wave deeper and less likely to destroy boards.
These videos are for real people working folks surfing, really great info!! Can't wait to hear your take on this bomb drop. I'm looking at a high volume foamy that's short. I'm in Montrose, and it can get really mushy, but can be really fast and fun.
This might be a good board for Montrose, especially when it's good. Could be a little low volume for when it's small and mushy though.
Hi, is this fine for beginner (193 cm, 100 kg) or is it too low volume to start with?
If you're using it for river surfing, it really depends on the wave. If you're using it for ocean surfing, I would probably recommend a bigger board for a beginner.
Thanks for showing this! Been thinking about picking one up. Have you taken this board out? How do you like it? How is the weight of the board?
I still haven't gotten to surf this board. Glenwood, Springdale, and high water LC all didn't happen for me this season. I'll be taking out to the ocean in the winter though, so I'll get sometime on it before next river surf season. The weight isn't bad, if I get a chance I'll put it on a scale and see.
You could go to halfmoon bay in Santa Cruz my favorite spot in northern California
I got the same board too here in NJ. Catches a lot of waves easy and more performance compared to foamies. Let me know what you think once you get to test it out. 🤙🏽
For sure! I'll be surfing it in this ocean this winter and hopefully in the rivers in the spring.
how did you like tthis vs the bean bag?
My 5'10" FFBB is WAY better at catching waves than the 5'3" Hydra. However at 5'3" the Hydra fits into shortboard waves like Denver, Boise and Bend. But, it does feel way too big/high volume for those waves.
