    I bought a Raleigh Sojourn new, around 15 years ago. I wasn't pleased with the front wheel clearance as my toe would strike the front tire. It also rides so rough that I rarely ride it

    0:07 and 0:16 The only gripe I have with my Specialized Sirrus is the 40c tire size limit... otherwise it's very well designed with comfortable and compliant geometry along with a carbon fork and handlebar. I would much prefer 54c for rooty and rocky singletrack riding especially with wet autumn leaves carpeting the trails.

    Excellent video I'm looking at bikes to get started in gravel and I have on my list, Headlands 2 2024 Marin, Cutthroat C Rival GX AXS Transmission 2024 Salsa, 2024 Ibis Hakka MX Rival AXS I don't know which one would be better for comfortable trips and better quality construction I had the Commençal 365 SIGNATURE but I removed it because it is an aluminum frame and from the comments aluminum is not good for long trips I will feel the vibrations a lot carbon absorbs more vibrations

    Back then, there used to be rigid MTBs with drop bars for mtb racing. Not new and there's move for people to have bikes that offer multiple hand positions for comfort while bikepacking long distances in mixed terrain that might get rowdy. Some are hardtail based, while others are coming from gravel bike designs with revised geometry. Then you also have people like Dylan Johnson who find Dropbar XC bikes useful for certain races. The distinction is blurry, but who cares? Let there be all sorts of bikes.

    • @marksandoval5361

      Any full-sus XC bike with a fast rolling Gravel or XC tires (700x47 Pathfinder Pro, 2.2 Race King, 2.35 Thunder Burt, 2.4 Peyote) would be quite good. I like the 110/120mm travel Chisel FS but any full-sus XC bike will work. Either cut the flat bar narrow or install drop bars. If you are are intending to switch to drop bars, you might want to go down on size. My personal bike is a 110/120mm travel Epic Evo with 700x47 Pathfinder Pro tires and the flat bar cut to 24 inches wide.

    “When it comes to bike racks, they’ll break eventually-just watch anyone on a world tour. Two things are almost guaranteed: the rack will fail, and the rider will either weld it or buy a new one. Now, let’s talk about Mountain Man racks. They’re 100% tough-I haven’t seen one fail yet. However, with newer, stronger racks, it’s not the racks that are breaking anymore; it’s the eyelet mounts on the frame. Basically, there’s always going to be a failure point-either the frame mounts or the rack. My recommendation is to use an Aeroe rack. It won’t fail, and it doesn’t rely on eyelet mounts.”

    • @CycleTravelOverload
      @CycleTravelOverload 7 днів тому

      Appreciate your comment mate. That's one of the things I like most about Old Man Mountain racks is the ability to run axle mounting which takes the strain off the eyelets mounts. Adding to their robust nature!

    • @JeremyLawrence-imajez
      @JeremyLawrence-imajez 7 днів тому

      However I have seen an Aero rack fail in two ways. One breaking a frame. The leverage it can apply on seat stays, particularly carbon ones is not what they were designed for so Booom! Another was a Ryan Van Duzer trip where his companions Aero rack had issues with its mounting design and trip got cancelled. There is no perfect product.

    • @Bikepacking
      @Bikepacking 7 днів тому

      @@JeremyLawrence-imajez you do know Ryan forgot to tighten the bolts when he installed it he did mention it in the video .. i asked him about it they where in a rush leaving just put it on .. the carbon frame i did here about made in china cheap frame and you forgot to mention that the guy crashed his bike hard and frame broke at the point of the crash …. I been using it on a fully carbon Ike for 5 years never an issue ..

    • @JeremyLawrence-imajez
      @JeremyLawrence-imajez 7 днів тому

      @@Bikepacking I've never had a heart attack, so by your logic heart attacks are not an issue either. I wasn't referring to the the bike you had mentioned in a video either because I wasn't aware of that, it was another one. And crashing bikes is a fairly common occurrence off road. Even a low speed tumble can result in a serious amount of force through stays due the leverage of the Aeroe design. I'm aware user error was part of the problem with the Van Duzer mishap, just like him snapping a Gates belt drive was. But all these things illustrate how supposedly problem free kit isn't issue free. Even with very experienced folk. Not saying they are bad, just they are not the perfect problem solution as some folk like to make out.

    • @Bikepacking
      @Bikepacking 6 днів тому

      @@JeremyLawrence-imajez the reason i use them is less chance to fail thats my point .. i changed a lot of my gear out over the years with one thing in mind more durable ..

    About high bottom brackets: a high bottom bracket makes a bike more stable at low speeds, which is what touring bikes are probably gong to be doing, while a low BB is better at speed in the sense that you can throw the bike into corners better. It's absolutely not true that a high bottom bracket is less stable, it's just a matter of what the bike is designed to do.

    Yeah those Fred bars certainly look like they work. I've been scouring second hand websites for the old versions of profile design aero bars where the bar clamps and armrest clamps are separate meaning you can shift the pads significantly closer for comfort, they also have spacers available to lift them higher too. I find it crazy that I couldn't find this system on anything other than the old profile design bars. The closest I found are the Pro Missile and Bontrager Race Lite but I'm unaware if they have spacers available.

    You know why they are cheap? Because they are cheap. Poor quality, bad components. Here is my experience with my Breezer Radar: - After a few 100 km scratches and ditches on the coating - After ~3000 km the bottom bracket was worn out, replaced by a Shimano bb - Noticed the color of the bike changed, looks like the coating is not UV stable - After ~6000 km the steering head bearing was worn out, replaced by a FSA bearing - After ~9000 km the hub of the back wheel was worn out, no replacement parts available, so instead of a new hub I decided to give the bike away and get a new one with better components. Sad enough that for this amount of money the quality is so poor.
