1967 Johnson 3hp Folder. I used this motor on the back of a 15ft aluminum boat that I rented at the park. This little motor ran so smooth and idled wonderfully. I think everyone should own one of the Evinrude/Johnson 3hp outboard from 1952 to 1967. What a wonder treat to cruise around the lake and check the catfish lines.

Where r u supposed to have the throttle position at wen u do this?
Used mine every year from 1996 untill 2014 without any maintanance on regular car gasoline. Awesome stove.
I remember this vid. Its so old
Awesome video very clear tutorial
Good video I just picked up the same motor!
Buenos días tengo un motor johnson 25hp 2 tiempo a platino año 1976 lo quiero poner a cdi
These Evinrude/Johson motors are so nice to look at, work on, and run. I just wished Evinrude/Johnson would have put a natural clutch, they would have been even greater. Thanks for sharing.
Do you happen to know the dwell angle? If you could spin it with a drill motor you could get the points perfect by setting the dwell.
Nice video ! How do you check MAX TIMING Or set max timing Is there a stop somewhere
Nnice
I just picked one up today. A 1984, Took me a bit to adjust the two needles. Seems to work nice also, but doesn't idle that slow.
What is it a camping stove
Yes, it kind of like the Optimus SVEA 123R, but in contained canister. Made in the 1960 to 1980s. Great for hiking and camping. Very simple and compacted.
Can you send me the contact information to the person that repaired your Mercotronic unit? Thank you, Mike
Mike, it has been a number of years since that was done and I am sorry I can not locate that person's contact information.
I have the same engine, have it running great. Now I want to repaint it but can't find the color for the lower unit.
Is this an alternative to using the timing fixture tool you used on your other video? Or do you have to do both methods, using the timing fixture and the way you did it on this video using feeler gauges? If it's either or which method do you prefer?
They are two separate methods to set the points. Do not combine both. They are both the correct way to set the points timing. The use of the timing fixture allows a more precise timing. Using the feeler gauge is a very long standing method that was used for many many decades. Later in the 1950's mechanics received literature from the product houses and an additional tool (timing fixture) for setting the points. If you have the timing fixture use it. If you have a feeler gauge use it. Both are good methods :)
Hi, I need some help, the points are new, the coils and condensers also new, have continuity between coils and spark plug connectors, did the alignment as you explained (thanks for the video!!) but still only have spark on the lower, not on the top. Switch and spark plugs are also new. Any idea what could be? My engine is a 40hp Johnson 1970 (40ES70A) Thanks in advance
Did you figure it out? I have the same problem
great work one thang you should add is MiG plate should be full advanced on hash mark wen setting point .thank you great info.
Nonsense !
Thanks for this video man. I couldn't afford the tool, but I was able to use the flywheel. It has 2 timing marks on the bottom edge. Just have to take it off and put it on a few times. I appreciate your doing this. It helped me a lot.
Your welcome!
Still got this @cajuncookone ?
It is a good idea to pull your plugs so you don't get the back pressure from the pistons.
Porque motor everrude tiene buena chspa i no quier entender qué pasa hai
How do I know which coil goes to which cylinder if I'm standing behind the motor
Follow the spark plug wire to the coil
Another good tutorial. My daughter and I used my old stove at an antique power show. It had been years since I used it. She was sixteen and had never seen it. It took us a while but we eventually got the soup cooked. Are you still playin with old outboards? My daughter and I take old outboards and her garden tractors to the power show. It’s a good place to hand out info for the AOMCI. Take care, it was good seeing some videos from you again.
Steve, good to hear from you :) I have not repaired a motor in about year and a half. I took a little break. I still like old outboard and will most probably get back to fixing and running old outboard sometime this year. I started collecting a few lanterns and stoves. Just sent a set to my nephew and wanted to make sure he was able to safely run them. It was not pro video and all my "uh" pauses, but it will suffice:) Glad your are still active with AOMCI and your having your daughter along to enjoy the events/shows. Cheers to you buddy!
Thanks for the tutorial. It’s been a long time since I used one.
I waffled on a bit, but I hope it helps my nephew have fun with them and stay safe :)
what oil mix did you use?
Gas to oil ratio is 16:1 Use a good synthetic blend because there is very little smoke and excellent protection. Enjoy:)
Good job great information
wrong
thank you bud for ur presentation helped me a lot since i dont know anything about small motors and i had purchased a 1974 evinrude 6 horse a while back kept getting one sparkplug firing while other wasnt ordered what i needed now if someone can post a evinrude small motor parts or can direct me to one so i can look if all parts are there on my motor

Good informative older video. And his other ones as well! But note about sanding the points: use a fine grit 300 sandpaper give or take, and just dip a folded piece wet with alcohol and sand like he shows here so the points are CLEAN & DRY. Don’t touch them with fingers or any body oils; it can affect low idle/speed quality. Insures good consistent spark across the gap at all speeds. Not criticizing him here- his vids are great for noobs or anyone because of how he comes across to you in showing & demonstrating tuneups etc. He has a great vid on setting timing with a meter. Copy that and your motor will just sing.
Is this how you gap the points
At what point do you set the point gap??
0.20"
Now I’m not afraid of taking it apart and not sure of what I’m doing
Don’t get any better most information I’ve found anywhere thanks
Great video’s I’m getting into old Johnson outboards thanks for all your experience great help

Great little motor! What size John boat you pushing there- I have couple these old 3hp I got from my Dad - Been sitting for many years - Could you recommend Good place to get parts? Also one of these is '58 Evinrude & The other is same you have here '67 folding lower unit Curious about how much oil to run I them? Thanks for video -
Jack Lowe, a good place to get parts is www.marineengine.com They have parts diagrams as well. Originally the Evinrude/Johnson 3hp motors call for 16:1 gas to oil ratio. Now oil has improved since 1963. The 1964 and post motors were advertised to use 50:1 gas to oil ratio. The problem with that is these motors internally did really change. They still have a friction based bearings going to the crankshaft and the connection rods to the piston heads. Same as the 1950's motor. It will run on 50:1, but you will get premature wear and tear that will not be noticed for few years down the line. Result will be poor compression due to piston ring wear and piston slop from premature connection rod to piston wear. Use Synthetic TCW3 oil. Biodegradable and smokes much much less than the dino oil. Recommendation 16:1 but no less than 24:1 fuel to oil ratio. By doing so, those motors will out live you :) The boat the little motor was pushing was a 14ft modified v hull Aluminum boat. Sorry my response was delayed, but I work full time and I dont get chance to post responses. A good place to get help and it is free to join. Antique Outboard Motor Club. I am a member there. Very knowledgable guys. www.aomci.org Cheers buddy!
Great video, but you might have pointed out that torqueing the flywheel 40lbs is for a little 3hp. Would be different for larger motors with larger diameter cranks, flywheels and threads. However, that not withstanding, I am obliged that you went to the trouble of making this video available to the masses. It is a very good tutorial.
Great video... very informative... Thnx...
hello! im working on my 6hp evinrude fisherman from the 60's, im wondering when i have it started and go for a trip then shut it off it wont start back up util its cooled down. i have my guesses that it is the coils that causes this because the protective plastic is broken on them. i have already checked the fuel line, fuel pump and carburetor and they are all fine. to note is that i have also switched sparkplugs and that was the first time it started before i did anything else. it also has bad idleing and shuts it self off after give or take 20 seconds if i dont give it any throttle. also tried the air to fuel mixer but it dosent "seem" to do anything at this moment. Happy for any help! :)
If the plastic is breaking on the coils, please replace them! Those old coils will give you nothing but misery! KEEP the old coil laminates encase there are issues with laminates of the new coils. You can always put the new coil body on the old laminates. Please replace the condensers as wel. If the old points look good just clean them and reset them. GET your ignition in good order first then deal with fuel delivery/carburetor. An excellent resource is the AOMCI website. I have been a member there for 12yrs. Excellent advice. Free to access the Ask a Member forum. www.aomci.org
@@cajuncookone Thank you so much and i just ordered new coils! :)
Is there ANY CHANCE.... I could get on a short phone call! Please... your videos have helped me so much. I just need a tip on timing.
Wow! I've fought my '71 Fisherman many times and could never get the sight lines right in the middle. Now both are set so as it looks like I'm looking down rifle sights with the timing light on it! So much smoother, a lot less smoke, and the idle has never held at such a low rpm. Thanks for this great video! BTW, The point gap now is at about .035. A meaningless measurement for sure.
This was a missing link to what I was looking for!... Still no spark ☹️.
I've got a bone in my foot
Where can I find this timing fixture today can help
Im getting continuity no matter if my points are touching or not
The only way that can happen is if you did not disconnect the coil and condensor wires.
That sucks to spin when the prop goes out like that
Awesome videos for these older but gorgeous motors. Thanks a lot for making them!
You are most welcome. Thank you for your compliments.
