Welcome to Hook Life. Here we eat, sleep and breathe fishing. I am pretty obsessed with fishing any and all bodies of water. The purpose of this channel is to document fishing adventures from the North woods of Wisconsin to the Hot beaches of Florida and everything in between.
I am based in West Central Indiana. Midwest fishing for largemouth, smallmouth & spotted bass, walleye, pike and Muskie have forced me to hone my skills. This is channel will be full of tips on techniques, bait reviews, fish catches and opportunities for me to continue to become a better angler from bank, kayak and boat. Come along as we search out the white whale in any body of water. Keep those rods bent. Tight lines.

Fishing new bodies if water can be tough. Keeping tackle simple helps. I discovered the power of the Ned Rig on my 2nd annual trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 2023. On this outing i learned a valuable lesson about color options and sometimes keeping it simple is the best thing you can do. Thank you for tuning in and watching. Fishing rivers doent have to be tough if you bring the right tackle with you! Fishing rivers can be a lot different than lakes, reservoirs or just beating the banks around some ponds. The fishing can be downright tough especially trying to decide what tackle to bring and what baits to throw. I didn’t grow yo fishing rivers, but in the past few years I have started to build confidence in some tr...

Excellent Gentlemen great day out for you!
Not a huge numbers day but still great to be out in the water. Thanks for tuning in Scott
Greg be honest, have you ever dumped your kayak and get a little wet. 🤣
Not yet but I did have one experience where I thought I was going in for sure. I was kayaking the creek by my house for the first time a few years back. This creek is known for fast water and has even taken lives unfortunately. I was floating backwards and I spun around because I saw rocks coming ahead and I tried to get out of the way of this one big boulder and I failed. The boulder got underneath me and I spun around 180° on top of it. I thought for sure I was going in, but I just ended up sitting perched on top of this rock backwards. Puckered is an understatement on how I felt at that moment. 😬🤣
One tip I always use when fishing a tube. I see you had it Texas rigged which always caused me to lose a lot of fish. This wasn’t my ideal but was shown to me by an older guy and I’m old lol. When rigging instead of the normal Texas rig just skin hook the tube on the side of the tube. I found I had more hook ups. And you don’t have the tube in the way after hooking fish.
I have seen that rigging method before. A lot of old timers do that with Texas rigged worms too. I actually have it “stupid” rigged with a tube jig head. It’s kind of like a T Rig without the free sliding weight. The hook has lead molded rounded it and is in the tube. Not sure if I could skin hook it but now I’m gonna try…🤣
Yeah it might be hard with stupid tubes
I gotta throw the tube more… you and Gramps be killing with it
Thanks for watching J. It’s a killer and a staple now for me when fishing rivers or creeks or targeting smallmouth.
Looked like a great day to be on the water. Very peaceful. And even just one fish when it's cold is a good day. Thanks Greg.
Jerry thanks for tuning in my man. For me, any day on the water is a good day. It gets even better when I can meet up with new people, and turn them on to new techniques that lead to PB’s
when temps drop they hide in wood and bulders , worms up their body faster
Yes sir!! Thanks for tuning in!
Nice work out there!
Thanks Mike
Well done. tyvm!🍻
Cheers
Thanks so much for all your helpful hints. I'm definitely gonna try those Owner offset EWG jig heads with the 30° angle eye! Are they thin wire or pretty much standard gauge ???
Hey William. Thanks for tuning in. I typically use the 2/0 size and I would say they are light wire
What a cool experience! I think you’ve given me a destination goal for this coming season!
Thank you for tuning in and watching. The Upper Peninsula is a magical place
Lol Greg. You helped get my house fixed up after a tree incident, and now I find you here trying to plan my spring kayak fishing trip to the tippe… looks like I’m going to be bothering you for advice 😂
Jim!! I’m happy to see you again and here of all places! I hope you and your family are well. I think about you every time I’m on Farabee Drive. Not sure I’m the guy for Fishing advice but if you need it I’m here.
@ I came looking for advice for fishing smallies on the local rivers out of a kayak. I mean…. This channel is pretty much exactly the help I needed!
lol! JUST SAY NO🚫🍌🍌🍌🚫!
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
OSP makes some bad ass baits
Yeah man for sure. Thanks for watching
Great idea. Just found this video. I’m in the process of installing the same. Perks of sideview scan transducer. lol. Everything takes a little extra engineering
Thanks for the watch! The updated version does not use just silicone. I drilled screws into the block and sealed that with silicone. That took place a year ago. So far so good.
@ I finished mine last night. Used a 1” thick , 3x4” block of HDPE. I welded it to the bottom of pod. Then screed the transducer into the block. After dying over night I held by the transducer and shook the hell out of it. Held strong.
Right on. SEND IT!!
Very informative, question would you scent a need rig?
If I thought it would lead to more bites, absolutely! I feel that smallmouth have more of a reaction to scented baits than largemouth. So if your smallmouth fishing and the bite is tough then definitely try a scented bait
Thank you for tuning in. I really appreciate it
It's fun to have a crowd when you're catching the big ones. Woo hoo!
Not sure what bananas do to the fishing but I bet you didn't get scurvy. And I'm thinking that you may have got that tree bait from George of the Jungle Baits. I have a few of those myself 😄 Thanks for the video my friend.
Thanks for watching homie
Nice video Greg! Thanks for sharing!
David, thank you for watching!
Happy Birthday hoss. I liked the American flag on your buddy’s yak.
Thank Steve. I appreciate you watching
Great video man! Hahaha I know the feeling of casting straight into a tree that like! Hahaha
Thanks for tuning in Homie
@@HookLife no problem man! I really do want to join you on the water next year! I need to hit more rivers!!!
@ you can join me this winter if it’s fishable. I have a pretty good winter hole by my house. BUT… we need some damn rain. Rivers are super low right now
@ no joke we need rain for sure!!! I may do that!
First-time I've heard of evil bananas, but now I know if it's slow the nanas must go. That carp was totally unexpected tho. Thought you just caught a PB bass for a sec. Hope you enjoyed your B-day and keep living that hooklife.
Thanks for tuning in Zach! You no mo nanas on the boat
Nice video Greg thanks for sharing !
Hey Michael! Thanks for tuning in bud!
Dang bananas. Nice work 👍
Thanks for tuning in g in Mike
Heck yeah 👍
Sometimes we win. Sometimes they do. 😮
💯
Loop knot those neds, it will always land tail up!
Nice Greg
This was a good video. Owner is my favorite hook brand but I haven’t tried the jigheads… yet Do you put super glue on the offset jigheads with Z man plastics?
Depends on the hook style. If the jig head has a lock or really good bend I do not use super glue. All other times yes, as long as I remember to bring it! 😵🤣
Zman plastic is super soft and therefore not very weedless even on EWG.
I fish flukes exclusively with spinning combo. I use 12 pound leader at minimum with FG knot. I also target pitch and drop vertically around pole timber using a 1/16 oz pegged bullet weight on the nose. I need a vertical fall and use underhand pitching (some folks call it 'plinking') often using spinning gear. The small amount of extra weight helps casting distance. I used a 7'4" - 7'6"rod and a size 30 reel with high vis braid main line.
I like it!! Recently I have been having a lot of success fishing a fluke on the free rig pitching around cover and structure like submerged timber and bridge pilings in the winter. Sounds an awful lot like “plinking”. Thanks for tuning in!!
Yea it would be nice if it had like a keyway or something on it. That way it only lines up one way
Agree 💯
Good stuff.
Thank you very much
Use a split ring on the horizontal line tie
I prefer the direct tie personally
@@HookLife im meant to say use a split ring for swim jigs that have a horizontal line tie so you can still use the queens tackle switch blades
Yeah man! AND any time you introduce the split ring you get way more hunting erratic action, BUT less head knocking and actual chatter…
😂😂😂😂ahhhhhhhhhh
🙏🏼🙏🏼🤣🤣
Looks gorgeous up there. Those Nedlies catch all the species. Big Ones at that. Can't be disappointed with 20-plus fish. Good job man. Once again you have me envious to check out the UP.
Thanks for tuning in Zach. It’s a special place. Hopefully I can get this years video out…this year 🤣
@HookLife absolutely man. I thought it was recent but you must be backed up with all the footage of those hawgs you're catching. 😂
@@ZacksRealAdventures by hogs, if you mean children with softball practice. Then you are spot on.
@HookLife When it's not hook life it's Dad life. But uh, yea, that's what I meant. 🙄
I like fishing😅
I really need to practice with the Ned rig
Sometimes it’s all you need. It would be perfect for your BFs gear too
Thanks for sharing this buddy! Some good information!
Thanks for tuning in
Fishing makes me me
💯
Looked like an awesome trip Greg. Even those "hammer handle" pike are fun to catch. We did great on my spring trip to Minnesota using the ned rig. Very versatile way to fish. Thanks for the video my friend.
Jerry thank you for tuning in. It was a great afternoon
Awesome day!!
💯
Ned rig was always my go to bait when they would touch anything else. Saved a lot of days for me.
What size hook for standard Ned rig?
Personally I like a #1 or 1/0 with 3” baits I like a 2/0 or 3/0 with 4” baits
Presentation and location land more bug fush!
Thanks for watching
Throw a 4" screw in the top hinge of that door and fix that reveal for all the carpenters in the audience 😅
Great job!
They must of re released, I just bout 3 of them for 3.99 a pop at the bass pro in Atlantic City
I have seen the small 4” versions at BPS by me. Did you find a 6” version?
What exactly do you not like about the 6th sense swimjig??
Head shape and hook triangle and placement matter quite a bit when using these queen Tackle switchblade. I do not like the way that the blade contacts the head based on the shape of the head, and the position of the line tie on the head.
@HookLife Thanks I ordered the switchblade just for my 6th sense swimjigs 😞 I guess I'll have to try them on some different swimjigs 🫡💪👍
