Catwalk National Recreation Trail Gila National Forest New Mexico
An easy ~ 2 mi out and back trail over the Whitewater Creek, with the first part of the trail paved and also with steel catwalks that allow for more accessibility. Be mindful of the weather, as there are several water crossings that were easily traversed due to low water levels. Dogs on leashes as welcome. Great place to cool off in the water, during the summer months. About an 330 ft elevation gain, with first 0.5 miles either paved or steel catwalks in place, of which this section is the most accessible. Vault toilets at entrance to trailhead and places to also have a picnic. Plenty of paved parking. Expect the hike out to be in the moderately steep grade category (8% or less). Continue on after the catwalks to hike further into the canyon, and explore! #hiking #newmexicotrue #gratitudejourney #hikingpath #subaruforesterwilderness #campinglocations #outdoors

Subaru Forester Car Camping at Cosmic Campground in New Mexico

A primitive campground with an easily accessible road to camp sites, offering amazing vistas for sunrise, sunset, and star gazing at night. Unmarked hiking and jeep trails within walking distance of our campsite. We went early September 2024 and encountered rain, heavy rain at times in late afternoon, but was left with amazing landscape to view post stormy weather. The town of Alma does have ga...

An approximately 1.7 mile out and back loop trail, that is fairly well marked. Upon entering the trail, you may see a sign that states,'You are now in Wolf Country'. I love Bear Canyon Reservoir! I have spent a lot of time in Gila National Forest as well. Thanks for the video
@@theinfinitepassportTV Appreciate the comment! Thanks for watching!
Looks like a wonderful hike!
It was!
I dislike people putting lipstick on a pig. Has anyone of your viewers tried to get out of a confined space like that ? So high up and step on the ground ?? I built something like this and it’s dumb. How do you climb in and remove shoes or put them on? Absolutely no room
@crankshaft007 Thanks for the comment. We take our shoes or boots off inside the tent, and place them on the rear bumper, then step up onto the bumper while lifting up onto the platform. Yes, it's a space where you then shimmy, or crawl until reaching the 'head of your bed-, by the front driver and passenger seats. Weather permitting, opening the large moonroof will provide a more open feeling, around the head, and as I said in the video, I am 5'3" and my partner is 6' tall, and we both have had wonderful sleep when camping. I am unaware of how many viewers have such a similar set up, but would love to hear how they like or dislike this set up.
Looks like fun!
You have got to get a lav mike. I recommend the Hollyland Lark M1 it's under a hundred bucks for two lav mics and they were great and are very easy! I love New Mexico!
Thanks for the tip!
@@VintageHikerLife thanks for the videos!
Thanks for the vid. What's your method to keep the battery from draining with the hatch up? I use a carabiner to fake it being shut. Enjoy NM, don't miss the Gila Wilderness!
@@theinfinitepassportTV I use a small screwdriver that I have in the car, to push the metal lock from the open, unlocked position to the closed, locked position. I did a separate video on that as well. Yes, love exploring NM and the Gila! Thanks for the comment and welcome to the tribe!
I would still lower the height of the platform by about 4" at least. I have to be able to sit up in bed, or I go crazy....
@@leilal8053 thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching!

Thank you for a good video. What type of tent are you using, is it from Amazone, is it easy to use?
@hermannvalsson4237 The tent is sold on Amazon, and it is the Napier Sports/SUV tent, bought for under $300. Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for watching and your question/feedback!
Also, the full name of the tent is Napier Sportz Dome to Go tent....
What tent do you use for your forester?
@@drewprice3110 the tent is from a company called Napier...got the Napier SUV tent...it can come in a couple of different sizes...9 x 9 x 7.25 ft, or 10 x 10 x 7.25 ft...does this answer your question?
When the tailgate is open and already locked, you can press the door unlocked button on the key fob a few times to open it. I have a 2024 Outback Wilderness, and I have not tested it yet, but that issue is supposed to be fixed on the newer Subaru’s. Hopefully.
Thanks for this information!
You need more lighting. The video was very dark. Can’t see details of the car inside.
@@JSBowling2011 thanks for the feedback! Will keep that in mind next time.
for the mechanicle lock I use a D clip to hold ,for the unlock i hold the rear hatch outside opener button for a 5 seconds ? pushed till mechanicle unlocks on mij 2018 forester

Hello, I just purchased a 2024 forrester. My back passenger windows do not roll down. Is this normal? Wondering if it needs repair? The service department couldn't tell me on phone call😊
@lindaabuhasou2635 You may have the child lock setting on , and that may not allow the rear passenger window to roll down.
If you recently disconnected the battery, it could be that the switch needs to be reprogrammed
Don’t buy a silly WOKE SUBARU car! If you want to go off-road with real power and capability, drive a solid 4X4 truck!
This comment is definitely up there with the dumbest comments on youtube. Oh, and purchasing gas at a gas station is for the woke of the woke. If you really want gas, purchase a oil refinery and do it properly.
I have a 2017 F350 and a 2024 Subaru Forester Sport. I like the far Subaru better.
Thank you, nice video and great campsite. Question: can you keep your rear hatch open for long periods without draining your battery ?
Excellent question! I use a small screwdriver to push the rear latch up, to 'fool' the car thinking that the rear hatch is locked. Then, when we get ready to leave the campsite, I manually push the rear hatch down gently, close to the latch, and hit my power lift gate button inside the vehicle to move the hatch up and down a couple of times and then the rear hatch mechanism unlocks and hooks back up to the latch, and the rear hatch returns to its closed position. Does this answer your question? If not, I may add a video to show what I do instead of explaining in words...if you do not 'fool' the vehicle into thinking the rear hatch is closed and locked, when in fact, it remains open the entire time camping, then, yes, it will drain the battery...I know of others who had that problem, and now do what I do.. I didn't want power rear hatch but it comes with the Wilderness edition...
@@VintageHikerLife I just took purchase of a 2022 Outback and want to camp in it and I love the tent idea. I need to look at the latch on the hatch and see if I can figure out how you did that with the screwdriver.
@@cstacey9163 Let me know if you have any more questions...just use the screwdriver, or for that matter, anything that is strong enough to just 'flip ' or move the locking mechanism from the unlocked to locked position...I do not use my finger for fear of pinching my finger into this lock😉
Able to keep hatch open for @4-5 days, with this set up, and car starts just fine
👍👍

Nice! That looks pretty steep in some shots! 😳 love all the desert hiking! we gotta get back out west
Thanks for showing this off! I have an Outback Wilderness and in the market for getting a setup myself, so this helps with shopping around!
Glad it was helpful!
@Jaypher I will be posting a follow up video on how this set up is working during traveling, and camping, as well as progressing towards a more minimalist lifestyle. I plan to show the tent that I use to attach to the rear hatch, that extends the living space as well as to show how two people,.sizes 5 ft 3 and 6 ft tall, can sleep comfortably. Let me know when you get your build completed for your Outback Wilderness!
@@VintageHikerLife nice, looking forward to that follow up! I’m still traditional with tents being on the ground as opposed to on a vehicle but I love good setups!
@Jaypher Thanks again for letting me know about my video post from yesterday...no visual but only audio...reposted, thanks!
@@VintageHikerLifelol no problem, glad you got it resolved
Are they edible? McDonalds wants to know.🤣
oh good its up again. The Ox ( heard there is hunting season for them )
Yes, I do believe there is a hunting season for them, just not sure when that occurs....the hunting season, I have heard, is due to the fact that there are not natural predators to keep this population in check....if anyone knows more details, please share! Thanks @TiaTickles for watching!
Add a 4" mattress and u'll have 3" between Ur nose and ceiling
Yes, it can be tight but I take advantage of the large moonroof on the Forester to just open the shade covering the moonroof to have a little more headroom and space....similar space to my VW Westfalia that I had before this vehicle...@ramblinvanman6250, what type of van/set up do you have?
Moved down from a high roof Promaster to a fiberglass cap on a Ram pickup. Thinking about moving down to an Outback with my mattress on the floor to give me enough headroom to eliminate claustrophobia
@ramblinmanvan6250. I have @ 8.5 inches of clearance between the rubberized cushion added on the top of the sleeping platform, to the roof...I sleep well with a thermarest pad added to this, and enjoy the ease of set up when camping.
So cool some one else gets out of las Cruces and enjoys the wide open spaces we have. Be safe out there.
