Unboxing 26" rigid fork for my 820 SingleSpeed
Sorry for the raw footage (and lots of "ummms"). Quick unboxing video for a second hand fork I ordered on Ebay.
Been wanting to get rid of the suspension fork ever since I purchased this 820.
Took almost a year to find one that fits my budget and style.

Ztto Chain Guide as Single Speed Tensioner?
so the blackspire stinger will work even on full sus?
That's a good Q- I didn't think about it during the making of this video I assume it wouldn't be optimal with a full suspension, may not work at all depending on the amount of travel (IMHO a rear der is probably the best solution for a full sus)
how’s everything going?-thank you!you created beautiful , 📹
I'm doing pretty well (considering the situation in my country) Thank you 🙏
in my opinion the sb one g3c is the absolute best tensioner for mountainbikes, if you have no budget, but if so the reverse sb one collab is the best for around 60€-80€
Wow, this looks like a uber nice tensioner, haven't heard of it before, thanks for sharing 🙏
Great video. I learnt a lot. The main thing being I can convert my existing derailleur on my 148x12 boost for little cost. Thank you
Glad to help out, this is exactly why I made this video 👍
what if you have a coast break wheel installed? does that make the difference on which chain tensioner I should go for?
Hi, thanks for the question! I'm actually not sure about that since my riding is mostly off road I don't have much exprience with coaster brakes, if I see something will let you know
@@ssmtb no worries, cheers! I appreciate your response
What rise of your handle bars?
This was video was shot when I had the stock 25mm rise bars, Since then I have gone up to 50mm rise on Spank Vibrocore bars - It has really helped reduce the load off my lower back
Nice bike conversation.💯
Thanks!
Thanks for compiling these. This is a niche within a niche, for a beginner it can be hard to find information.
Cheers, thanks for the positive feedback!
Lots of torque in BB when climbing with SS bike. Those eccentric BB look to be a constant pain. Track ends and bolts are tried and true
Yea, those EBBs never really resonated with me, they seem like a lot of faff while offering fairly limited chain adjustment I know some SS riders really like theirs, so go figure 🤷♂
I've had my track ends slip under braking and they require way more clamping force across the axle.
Honestly the cheapest and easiest chain tensioner is an old 7 speed derailleur and secure it with a shifter cable so that you can adjust it for an optimal chain line. It’s called “dingle shifter” an advantage of this besides from its low cost is your chain wont drop compared to a cheap chain tensioner.
Good point, thanks for sharing!

You can fit an extra bottle, on the bottom side of the downtube?
Yea, that's what I ended up doing 👍
What are the best chains to use for chain tensioners? I’ve tried so many but they PC1 from SRAM is the only one that doesn’t skip when pedaling, but this chain is expensive, any recommendations? I used the surly singulator
I have had good results with KMCs x8/9/11
@@ssmtb sadly KMC has always skipped on me /: . No matter the length or tension, i take a couple of pedals and the chain skips.

The STS works fine without the quick release fitting, it is removable and optional.
You sure? Pretty sure I read in several sources that it's not compatible with thru axles (Would be happy to stand corrected if so)
@@ssmtb ok I see where you are coming from.. to clarify, I am not proposing that the STS is compatible with through axles, just that the component of the STS assembly that captures the skewer of the quick release is unnecessary. Of that I am sure. I have never tried fit-up with through-axles.
I have a kindernay vii on my eMTB. I originally purchased a tensioner directly from Kindernay with my order. It looks identical to the "da bomb rlx". Except without the branding. It is a total PoS. In less than a few hundred kilometres, the plain brass bushings in the pivot of the arm totoally wore out. Causing the entire arm to tilt over sideways. I would avoid Kindernay tensioner, (and Da Bonb if it is the same) at all costs. Because they are extremely powerful quality crap.
The Kindernay tensioner also doesn't have any way if adjusting "b-screw" type adjustment. And it no good for rear cogs larger than 18t. Even though kindernay will happily sell you a 22t rear cog...
@@BramBiesiekierski thanks for sharing! I've heard some good things about da bomb, so maybe that kindernay isn't manufactured so great 🤷♂️ For me the ISCG has been really bullet proof
@@ssmtb I haven't seen the "Da bomb" in person. But it looks like near identical construction to the kindernay item. I suspect they are manufactured at the same OEM factory. (Probably in Taiwan.) And simply ordered in bulk and resold. As is the way things are done with so much consumer products, not just cycling stuff. There is also another company that also use a near identical looking tensioner. Called "problem solvers". You can look at them yourself and tell me if they look the same??? So no doubt in my mind, they are all sourced from the same component factory. Kindernay use Aligator brand hydraulics which are also a Taiwanese manufacturer. So its no surprise if they outsource the manufacturing of the tensioners. And even on the original shipping/invoicing info on the kindernay delivery box's, they specify some parts as from Taiwan. I think declaring this info must be an EU tax law or something along those lines????
@@ssmtb Right now I am looking at options to replace the worn out tensioner on my bike before it totally self destructs. Which is how I came across your video (thankyou). Full suspension eMTB with IGH and single speed chain, is a slightly different beast than a typical single speed commuter bike. And it does seem to require a very robust design. Also with a strong tension spring (and even damper) to over come the chain slap on off-road / MTB use. I am looking at using either the SB One, or Reverse Components Colab. As they both look very promising. What makes my particular setup interesting and difficult is that I use a comparitively high power mid-drive motor. Which due to the very high torque load, means I need to use a very large rear cog. Currently I run a 44t front, into a 22t rear, Into the 7 speed Kindernay. It's a 2:1 ratio. But I need the large rear cog to get sufficient chain wrap or chain teeth interface, so as to not skip teeth when under full power use. Unfortunately most of the limited number of commercial options available that are tailored to MTB use, tend to be designed for small rear cogs, like 13/14t etc. As they tend to be designed around downhill MTB / bike park / dirt jump MTBs. And not odd ball high power eMTBs like my bike.
Actually. I am mistaken. The Da Bomb RLx is a slightly different design than that of the Problem Solvers and Kindernay. The cage is a slightly different shape. And the upper link is also a slightly different design aswell. So maybe totoally unrelated. Or maybe an "updated" version of the others???
I fitted the DMR DTS to my single speed MTB conversion a couple of years ago and it has worked really well. There is some whirring noise but it isn't too bad. It's good that you pointed out the need for a quick release to use this DMR product though. Good review - thanks!
Thanks for the positive feedback and sharing your experience! Much appreciated 🙏
Hi, im just working on a Big Al Singlespeed build myself and wanted to know what chain tensioner you are using? Love the ISCG mounted option.
Nice! It's a cheap Ztto chain guide from AliExpress, managed to get it working with 34x20 and 30x20 Check out my channel there's a couple of videos including a conversion guide
@@ssmtb thank you. Did you have any issues with compatibility? The tensioner appears to be ISCG04 and the Big AL takes 05?
@@Azoth5876 glad to help! CG-04 refers to the model name, it's for ISCG05 On Ztto official store: a.aliexpress.com/_Ez5vuQH CG-11 also looks nice, If I'd need one today I'd get it, since the bashguard and upper chain guide aren't useful on CG-04: a.aliexpress.com/_EG9K8Kd Note: the only issue with compatibility is with the gear ratio, you need one that's close as possible to the Big Al's magic gear (otherwise the guide will hit your chain stays before enough tension is created)
Hey just checking back in, built up my Ragley big Al with singlespeed tonight. With a 32/20 ratio, my chain was too slack with the ztto tensioner. I ended up modifying it though- took a saw to the little spacer bar that stopped you from using it to create downwards tension (it still held together fine). Also swapped the metal jockey wheel out for a plastic one from an old derailluer. Its reduced noise somewhat, but im thinking ill file the teeth down to make it quieter
Does riding in a high gear all the time put more ware on the bottom bracket ?
Possibly, my Shimano Deore BB-52 died after one year of SS,but I don't have any objective tests (+ I rode more than I usually do, and in harsher conditions)
What is the maximum chain ring teeth fits
I believe the chain guide could fit up to 36/38 (specifically my Big Al won't tale bigger than 36)
Hey mate - any experience with oval chainrings for SS? I've got a 30T aB oval chainring on my big al, would 19 out the back still work or would it be too loose? Cheers
Hi, I didn't have any luck with Oval chain rings I suspect that running Oval without a tensioner or sliding dropouts would be more challenging then a regular magic gear You need the low/high tension ranges to be really dialled for it to work (at least from my attempts) Note: that the results may very between chainrings as they usually have different levels of ovality
@@ssmtb Appreciate the reply mate. Yeah I thought as much. The aB has 12% ovality which is one the highest I think. I'll just give it a crack with 32x19 to start. I'm new to SS, is that a tough gear to learn on?
@@TheFatSteez sure, glad to help out 32x19 is wee bit tough for my terrain and fitness But there are so many variables it will highly depend in your own preferences I can only recommend you let your body get conditioned into SS, and don't go too hard too fast (in terms of distances/pace) Kinda like barefoot running you need ramp it up gradually
@@ssmtb Alright awesome appreciate the advice. I'll keep my rides short to start haha. Luckily my local loop doesn't have too much elevation so should be alright if I build into it
Good video! You can also use a half-link to get the chain to fit 🤙
Thanks! 🙏 (Yea, the issue is half-links don't play well with NW chainrings which are pretty common)
At some point I start to think there are just silence... Voice line need to be MUCH louder.
Thanks for the feedback 🙏 audio wasn't so great on the first videos, trying to improve
Aesthetically?
Yea, usually goes together with simplicity, but basically I find that a lot of people ditching gears also want to ditch the rear mech for clean looking bike
Simplicity and reliability are the best attributes of singlespeeds. More riding, less wrenching. K. I. S. S. theory........ Function>form. Its the rider, not the freakin bike. The bike is a mere tool, designed for a purpose, to get from point A to point B. Perhaps logic doesn't work on lots of folks these days.
5mm, half a centimetre... And fully agree with disliking noisy hubs. That trend is awful!
Yea, I know 0.5 doesn't sound like much, but it felt fairly substantial If I wasn't on single speed I'd consider going down to 160mm
Thanks for the tips.
Sure, I'm glad you liked it !👍
Wow, that's low tire pressure! The bike looks great and I'm sure it rides nice too. You might consider a Single Speed specific hub if your going to upgrade. They’re going to make a stronger wheel and just look better because of they're wider hub bodies and smaller free hub and very few spacers. Just a thought
Thanks, yea I'd love that, hoping to get a custom rear wheel built around a Onyx SS hub one day🤞
Went SS last year. Never wanted to try it (I have knee issues) but with very limited trail/ride time, I thought dropping down to a 1x1 would make each ride count as a good workout. I'm amazed at how much I fell in love with it. Now both my gravel bike and mtb are SS. I can definitely relate to your thoughts and discoveries. I feel validated haha.
Good info.

Hi, thanks for your video. I seriously considered getting a single speed MTB and decided not to for three main reasons: 1. I successfully did single speed simulations on my cyclocross bike. 2. It appears that the mechanical difficulties involved in setting up a single speed are actually fairly non-trivial. 3. I live in Switzerland right at the foot of numerous long climbs and so need a variety of gearing choices. Point 1 addresses all the physical benefits that you describe: by simply choosing a gear and never shifting, I obtain your exact physical workout. Point 2 is that I found it very difficult to get a single speed setup here as I'm not sufficiently mechanically inclined to do all the setup myself, as I would require a chain tensioner in order to have a wide variety of gearing options. In particular, my simulations showed that I would require at least a 30x24 and more probably 30x28 setup if I wanted to vary my riding, due to the long climbs (up to one hour). These rear cogs do not seems to be easily available and I would require changing between a 28T and a 20T, which means changing the chain each time, etc. Moreover, any 29" mountain bike would mean a significant increase in effective gearing requiring probably larger sprockets, so I would have preferred a 27.5 setup. I looked into Spot bikes which have a 27.5 option, but they use a belt drive which makes it very difficult and expensive to switch sprockets. It was also difficult for me to find crank based power meters for a possible single speed setup (I even contacted Spot and their belt drive is not compatible with a power meter), so I would have to buy a pedal based power meter, which I did not want to do for various reasons: limited pedal choice (I don't like Garmin and SRM is out of stock) including excluding flat pedals. Generally, I found that the gearing options and setup was much harder to do than for my fixie (converted track bike on the road), where I can go from 45x19 to 48x16. Point 3 is my general conclusion that single speed mountain biking is a viable alternative only if the steep section are relatively short, that is, max time less than a few minutes. In particular, my simulations showed that I would require minute efforts at about 400W and slightly longer efforts at about 300W. Since my FTP is low, about 200W, that means that I would not be able to sustain much longer efforts without much lower gearing. In one simulation, I did a 5 minute 12 to 15% climb at about 35 rpm average (seated), and my knees were sore for about 3 weeks, so I would avoid this without gearing allowing me to be at least at 50 rpm (but maybe I should have do it standing, as you recommend). With a geared mountain bike all these issues are resolved, as I can now enjoy the physical benefits of single speed mountain biking, but on varied terrain, by simply choosing the appropriate gear for the given terrain by simply using my shifter once at the start of the ride. Once again, my general conclusion that single speed mountain biking is a viable alternative only if steep section are relatively short, that is, max time less than a few minutes.
Thanks for the detailed response! I guess SS doesn't suite some kind of terrains, it's definitely going to be a comprise on very steep/hilly terrain I have a lot of trails that are quite perfect for SS, I usually do 20-30km, with 300-500m of total climb, and I really enjoy the simplicity in those conditions
@@ssmtb By coincidence, check what I did today: ua-cam.com/users/shorts6RwGSzeHvQ4

I haven't succeeded yet in replacing it, I got a plastic pulley wheel that is the right diameter, but the inner bearing is too small, and the width is about 1mm too narrow 🤦♂️
