IoT temperature device (esp8266 & Firebase)
This is a portfolio piece creating a IoT temperature sensor that securely connects (via HTTPS) to a cloud service. The data can then be viewed via a web page. The project can be found here on GitHub along with additional documentation in the code:
github.com/nuke66/IoT-demo
The device uses a esp8266 microprocessor, ST7735 display, and BMP180 temperature sensor. It connects to Google's Firebase cloud service over HTTPS to post the sensor readings. A web page (HTML/JavaScript) connects to Firebase via its JS web api to receive and display updates to the data. The components can be sourced cheaply (around AU$25) and Firebase currently has a free usage tier.
I will be releasing the code for using an OLED 0.96" display (SSD1306) in the next week.
The next version of the demo (v2) will support having multiple temperature devices. I am also looking at providing an Android client (app) at some stage.

IoT temperature sensor demo (ESP8266 and Firebase)
Переглядів 4,8 тис.8 років тому
Quick demo of the Internet of Things (IoT) device I've made. This video is more to show my friends, but if people are interested I can do some videos on the Arduino / ESP8266 stuff I'm doing - let me know in the comments. On the right is a ESP8266 with a BMP180 temperature sensor attached. It is connecting through my home wifi to post data into Firebase (all over SSL). My phone is running an ht...
FRED road beacon ($10)

A look at the FRED roadside beacon. This multi mode beacon is water proof, floats, and best of all just US$10. EDIT: This beacon runs on 3xAAA (not AA's like I said in the video).
Trangia Mess Kit contents

My first video in over a year that I did in one take so you'll have to put up with lots of ummm's and some waffling. Feel free to make fun of my accent pronouncing words like "dent"and "pen" LOL. This is the contents of the kit I carried with me on searches.
Garmin GPSmap 62s (handheld GPS)

Some basic likes and dislikes of the Garmin GPSmap 62s handheld GPS unit. Sorry forgot to mention battery life, I get somewhere around 10 hours using Sanyo Eneloops (1900mA). Once you get over the price you'll find it's a sturdy and reliable piece of gear.
Victorinox Woodsaw vs Plaster Board (Gib Board)
Переглядів 29611 років тому
Just showing another use for the wood saw on the Victorinox Rucksack. In this case using it to cut plaster board (Gib Board). To lessen the shreading of the outside paper layer when cutting I scored it with a knife first. All in all did a good job. I only had a small amount of cutting and it saved me buying a plaster board saw.
Fender Fat Strat guitar

Showing my Fender Strat that I picked up when in Canada. I've decided that instead of never playing it and keeping it prestine that I'm going to start using it. It cost a fair bit and it doesn't make sense that I'm not enjoying playing it. Basically I'm going to love the crap out of it - haha. I have other instruments and gear but nothing as nice as this.
IMCO TRIPLEX 6700 lighter (nolonger being made)
Переглядів 7 тис.11 років тому
From all indications the makers of IMCO petrol lighters went out of business mid 2012. They were an Austrian company who had been making lighters before the second world war with Germain soldiers used them in the field. Here I'm showing the Triplex 6700 lighter. If you're interested I suggest you try and get an original now before they get really hard to find. Apparently there are a lot of chin...

How to tie a Mule Hitch knot
Переглядів 12 тис.11 років тому
The Mule Hitch is a super easy knot to learn to tie off cordage or bank line to an anchor point. Useful around the camp site or outdoors and makes a good anchor for running a tarp line. It's one of the few knots I've found that works well anchoring around thin square or rectangular poles. The Mule hitch is also known as the Halter hitch (and probably loads of other names).
Next72Hours prototype Parang machete
Переглядів 57311 років тому
First look at the parang that the guys at the Next72Hours are designing. This version is made from spring steel. Obviously fairly rough as it's a prototype but it has LOADS of potential. I really like the shallow blade width (not thickness but width). This is definitely the sharpest machette that I've ever used. Here's Matt's cutting video on the Next72Hours channel ua-cam.com/video/Li8w_OaWGxs...
GSI Minimalist cookset (Haul-u-lite)
Переглядів 47311 років тому
Review of the GSI Minimalist cookset which is a great option for those wanting a small cookset to take on day hikes. The neoprene sleeve and the sipply cup lid turn it into a great travel type mug and it's one of the features that makes it a winner for me. Not cheap but potentially worth the expense to those wanting the features it offers. Two thumps up from me.

Great for holding things like gloves, tools, in fact anything you want to keep on your person and rather not put down anywhere, for example standing in mud or water, hanging off a ladder or on a roof, etc. Like other maxpedition products it's made of hardy cordura and will stand up to rough treatment. I use the small roly poly on my duty belt to hold wate...

This compass has been updated. The direction of travel arrow is now a large triangle and there is a glow in the dark dot for low light. The "shed" is now glow in the dark. The North pointing magnetic arrow is glow in the dark. And there is a glow in the dark dot that tells you the calculated degree. I'm sure this review was accurate at the time but I wanted to let folks know that the model has been improved.

Having just watched some of Lyle's videos here on YT I just had to order the book (which I just did). As a retired teacher I just love his video teaching style and if this translates to the written word too I'm sure I'll not be disappointed. I appreciate the comments below about possible "padding" in the book but that's not a problem for me - it brings the author to life in the way a 1, 2, 3 manual cannot.

And of course it works globally! I have used mine all over northern hemisphere and some southern hemisphere and the needle stays level thanks to the Suunto Global mechanism. This is in contrast to the Silva models I have which dip terribly when used in the wrong hemisphere / latitudes. I would love a Roma scale too!

Just got this book and getting started on it. This has got to be the best I've seen even now in 2018. Lots of info explained clearly along with web sites to jump to! Some may be out of date but just find the current site. Obviously the GPS equipment is now out of date but the basics still apply and I suggest you still see the Lyle Brotherton videos. This guy is spot on with working methods. I appreciate his skill and will endeavor to bring my own skills up to date - wish I had only seen this before!! Enjoy the great outdoors and stay safe!

The Recta DT420G used the same needle (Recta invented it and is owned by Suunto) but the base plate is better laid out with a better luminous marker and romer scales. Unfortunately it is no longer made but if you find a good one on ebay, it is worth getting.

They make cheap Fisher space pens too - those capomatic ones are pretty cheap, I think $10. The refill alone costs like $6. So if you buy a pack of your disposable pens for $5, a Fisher refill for $6, you're spending $11. If you buy the Fisher Capomatic pen, it costs $10 and it comes with the refill. (Only $10: tinyurl.com/y9jl6led)
