    Is the a rule of thumb for size of 😢 pumps pressurized system. I have a 60kl pond with 10 kois. Would i need a 60kl pump or 30kl pump and turning water once every 2 hours or is 10kl enough turning over once every 6 hours. Cheers

    This is a good video, thanks for sharing. Spitting food is an issue mine have had on and off for years even in different ponds, and I've never got to the bottom of it, it bothers me, but they are all still alive and scrapes are clear. I've always doubted it is temperature swing related but maybe it is.

    One thing none of the filter videos talk about is how do the filters get the beneficial bacteria? Is there something that needs to be added? some type of chemical or powder? Or does the bacteria grow by itself?

    • @CharlotteKoiClub

      shoet answer is it grows itself naturally through 2-3mths period if from scratch.

      @CharlotteKoiClub Рік тому

      So if you have a pre-filter it would be more efficient and effective. And if you do, then size woulndt matter as much. The larger size helps you accumulate larger amount of junk for longer time but best practice is to back wash regularly like every couple days.

      @Charlotte Koi Club thank you for your response. I do have a separate multi bay pre-filter (it has its own submersible pump). I do clean the strainer basket daily and backwash every two to 3 days. There is something wrong with the system my waterfall outfit is weaker and there's just more detriment in the pond open up the motor housing on the pub verified that there was nothing in the impeller tomorrow I will break down the filter maybe one of the Octopus arms isn't sitting right?

    Thank you for this!!! I have one doing this, my ginrin chagoi, (he he will spit out the two different foods I feed everyone) Hi silk sweet potato (floating) and Mr. Kodama color up (sinking). The only thing that he will eat is Mandafu (he did eat shrimp this week, but i feed shrimp as a treat not a staple food). I was concerned that maybe a birth defect or a problem with the shape of his mouth. But I think him being a finicky eater may also be possible haha. So I just ensure it every meal time. If he won't eat the pellet food that I hate hand feed him. I give him some manda fu even if everyone in the pond isn't getting any at that time.

    Great video, but a word of warning to all of you would-be Ultima II filter users: The Ultima II 30K filter is a wonderful component to add to any pond. HOWEVER... be mindful about how you backwash it. Specifically, be sure whatever pump you're using to backwash this filter is strong enough to do the job. In your video, you said you're using a 1hp pump to run and backwash the pond. I have been using this same 30K filter in my 5,000 gallon pond for more than 15 years, so I have a lot of experience with the pros/cons of this filter. In my experience, you need NO LESS than 3hp to backwash this 30K model filter properly. Luckily, you don't need to run the pump at 3hp to filter your pond (your 1hp will work just fine) but over time, if you backwash only at 1hp, you're sinking bed, tubular media inside the filter will inevitably clog with debris and muck and no amount of backwashing will clear the media when this finally happens. Eventually, your media will become so contaminated, you will get uncontrollable algae blooms, and ulcers on your koi (yes... I am speaking from experience.) As such, there are a few things you can do to insure success using this filter. First - at the end of the season and at least once a year, you must open the filter and check the sinking bed media for any clogging and contamination. And it's not enough to simply remove the multi-port head on the filter and look at the media from the top. You have to dig deep into the middle of the filter bed and check there. I would suggest you use a shop vac to remove the media and place it in a garbage bag lined trashcan so you can truly inspect all of the media and really check it for cleanliness. I can guarantee that after just a couple of years of use, if you backwash this filter below 3hp, you will find the media completely contaminated and you will have to go through the process of handwashing the media to unclog it (not fun.) Second - and as I said before, do backwash this filter at 3hp. Yes, you can filter your pond at 1hp, but backwashing this filter takes a lot of power to REALLY blow that media around inside enough to insure a thorough cleaning. This means you will need a variable speed pump that allows you to run the Ultima II in filter mode at 1hp and backwash at 3hp. It doesn't cost anything more to run the filter this way, because you're only using the higher power during your backwash for a few minutes every week. It is true, however, a 3-phase pump will cost you more on the day of purchase than will a single-phase pump, but the running costs between a 1hp pump and a 3hp pump turned down to 1hp in filter mode is the same. It's the 3-phase windings in this motor that allow it's speed to be varied. The third option is to install a blower on the filter. The Ultima II does not come with a blower, because the manufacturer insists it is not necessary. WRONG!!! Without a 3hp pump to backwash, your media will clog if you don't use a blower. I have spoken to the manufacturer about the lack of a blower on their product and I understand why they insist it doesn't need one. The other filters made by their competitors (like the Aquadyne bead filters) all have blowers. The Ultima manufacturers like to tell you their design is better because, "You don't need a blower," but given the type of sinking bed media the Ultima filter uses, not having a blower in my eyes is a huge disadvantage. While it is true that one cubic foot of the Ultima sinking bed filter media has twice the surface area as the same one cubic foot of floating beads, that advantage goes away if the media clogs with contamination. The reason there's twice the surface area in the Ultima II as the bead filters is because of the tubular shape of the sinking media. That macaroni-style media is hollow and, thus, creates twice the surface area because of it. Twice the area means twice the bacteria. Twice the bacteria gives you the ability to remove twice the amount of ammonia and nitrites from your pond. However, the media being hollow is exactly why it's so much easier to clog than the bead style filters. Don't get me wrong, beads have their problems too in that they can clump together, which reduces their surface area even more, but that's why bead filters come with blowers. Using a blower in the rinse position, will break up the clumping beads allowing them to be thoroughly cleaned during the backwash. When talking about these problems with Ultima's engineers and especially when I suggest the addition of a blower, they insist, "If you backwash more often," you should not have any problems with their media clogging. Okay... but how much "more" is enough? At 1hp, my experience says you must backwash every day, which is a tremendous amount of water loss. These results will vary, of course, depending on your stocking and debris levels that enter into the pond. In summary, I would install a blower, or backwash at 3hp and then check your Ultima II media for any clogging every year at the end of the season. If you would like to see what this media looks like when clogged... reach out to me and I can send you pictures. It isn't pretty. Again... don't get me wrong: the Ultima II is a very good filter (that's why I still have mine after 15 years) but as it is with any filter component, you must know the pros/cons of each design and the limits of what they can produce in the way of results. The advantage of the Ultima II sinking bed media over a standard bead filter is the amount of surface area available for the good bacteria to grow . The disadvantage is the very real possibility of clogging. Pros and Cons... it's the same with anything. Thank you again for the great video.

      Hi Dave, thank you so much! I have been keeping koi for 22 years but only started really learning all the important complexities in the last 4 years when I moved to a new house and had to build yet another pond. (I love my fish and I wouldn't leave them if I moved. I have always used an ultimate ll filter as was recommended to me. At my last house. And the new one as well. I am noticing what you mean about it. Never really clearing after the back wash. I had thought it was due to not enough mechanical filtration and so added a stainless steel box filter w/waterfall return and submergible pump. I am struggling with reduced water velocity right now and just took apart. My performance pro artisan 2 pump tonight to check for blockages in the impeller there was some sledge but no blockages (last year there were some little rocks and actually some media because sub who worked for the pondman SD took it apart and didn't put it back together correctly. (I figured this was happening because I was losing a half a cup to a cup of media every time I back washed the pond) when I convinced him to come over and open it back up we found that one of the "arms" had fallen off. I've never broken down my ultimate too, but now after confirming the impeller was not clogged, still searching for the cause of my reduced water output. My plan is to break down the Ultima ll tomorrow. I do clean the filter basket daily and backwash a couple of times a week just as you mentioned in an effort to improve performance. I have a 4800 gallon pond and 24 koi, (in other words, a maxed out fish load) Still not big enough for my tastes, haha. (If I move again, the next house will need to have at least a 10,000 gallon pond. Any additional insight or advice you may have is greatly appreciated! 9:15 you can provide is greatly appreciated

    Our koi, Beauty. was put into a new tank 3 weeks ago by someone who didn't use any of the old water. In the past. Nothing to do. For 2 weeks she has been upside-down. A few days ago I took her to a veterinarian. He prescribed liquid antibiotics. I had to make my own food with gelatin. I am hand feeding her. Too much of the food is dissolving so the ammonia is high. Tonight she started spitting out the food, though she eagerly eats it out of my hand. Any suggestions? We love her so much! Thank you.

    Hi, I am learning how to set up a filtration system for a koi pond that I am current trying to build. I come across your videos and find them very informative and want to follow your set up. I was wondering if you can provide a little more advice. My pond is about 10000 gallon water. If I have a bottom drain that connects to a skimmer, then the water will flow to filters and UV light, then flow to a waterfall and return to the pond. What pump I should use for the skimmer to pull water in, then what should be used to get water to the filter system and what to use for water fall? Do they need to be in similar GPH rate? Or I could have a less powerful one for the skimmer and waterfall, just the one to get water to filters need to be a bit over the pond size? Sorry my questions might very dump, but I am very confused on how that work? Thanks so much for your help.
