Thanks! Really interesting look at crpg history
How long have u been learning to do this?
Anybody else here play the pen and paper RPG based on Dragon Warrior in Nintendo Power??
I vaguely remember it. Wasn't it a "go to passage XX if you do Y" deal?
Are there any more details re: the 16 virtues originally planned for?
Not that I've found. Richard himself probably doesn't remember anymore.
All of these text adventure games make me want to go back and play on that old MUD I played on back when Yahoo chat still existed. I don't even remember what it was called or if it even still exists, but it was the best MUD I had ever found.
Putting this on Watch later list. I played the heck out of the NES version
Wild to think that any of these programmers could have been Lord British years before Richard Garriott. Also I had no idea that orange monochrome predated the Matrix green I grew up with.
Mind blowing. Not because it was done on older technology but was actually done in 1975. It’s really impressive all the way around. Didn’t expect the visuals to look as good as they do or even the gameplay or mechanics to be this advanced. I wasn’t expecting anything like Alkabeth or maybe even Rogue which type of games were half a decade later. D&D was very new at the time. Absolutely crazy this existed.
Eat your heart out Akalabeth! Of course perma-death is standard! lol We've all had our share of character sheets ripped up publicly, or at least you have if you played back in the day.
Wonderful upload on a little discussed bit of gaming history! I highly recommend a read of The Friendly Orange Glow, a great history of the plato era & very engaging. Best story that sticks out about the multi-user games - some guys discussing their space combat session at a Dennys and half way thru their meal a little old lady comes over to them to thank them for defending the earth.
Hahaha
Another good one. edit: I have a recommendation/request. Add some extra time at the end and maybe make a title card or the like. Not only do the videos end abruptly, but the recommended video and channel pop-ups end up obscuring the end of the videos. Having a stock outro and channel card those can appear over without obscuring the end of the video would be appreciated.
9:50 So this is to blame!
Very good point.
Will do.
very interesting as a fan of both early d&d and early rpgs I would have never guessed that even some mainframe proto-MUDs had invented their own systems that early!
Interesting video. I was thinking of games like Zork. These predate those significantly.
Not by too long... Adventure comes out in 1976, and then Zork on mainframes in 1977.
Why do you think that a perma-death feature is not seen in more RPG games?
I'd say that the mass market gamer finds them more frustrating than fun, though this isn't 100% true.
@@MichaelCoorlim I agree with this. As a dungeon master for pen and paper rpgs in the late 70s through the late 80s, I had to adjust issues like permadeath for mainstream players, and quite frankly, I feel that they had a legitimate point in perma-death being more frustrating than fun.
@@MichaelCoorlim as a child, I certainly found it frustrating. Wizardry was brutal in that respect. (Ok, I'll sell half my equipment to resurrect my fighter. **Ashes** No!!!!!)
Because of arcade games, and pay to win was created. I mean we all bribed the DM, but this was sanctioned.
@@blockmasterscott tbf permadeath made perfect sense in D&D in the context of the way the Twin Cities and Lake Geneva crowds actually played the game (open tables with no set parties, many players with different ones each time potentially, and each player having multiple characters, likely at once)
Excellent video!!! Plato games are a vastly under-discussed topic in the history of games discussions. By the way, did you find these games fun?
They were fun, but it was a different kind of fun. Let's say... I appreciated them.
I remember my dad and his friends “ooohing” and “aahhhing” at these games. 😂😂😂
Ayoooooo wassup
I’m going to be thinking about this for a while.
Thanks for sharing these histories, Michael. I had a bit of exposure to this stuff as a child, but obviously no perspective on the broader industry trends or what they meant. My older siblings had one of those Magnavox systems with the screen overlays, but it was gone by the time I came around. Grew up with an Atari 400 instead.
Did some of my first coding on the Atari 400, with the BASIC cartridge.
@@MichaelCoorlim Same! Of course I was just copying the code from a magazine and didn't know what it meant.
I am really enjoying this series of videos. Such interesting topics and you make the videos entertaining. Keep them coming, these are great!!
the one for the nintendo was great.
I'm really enjoying these videos, very informative and thorough. The only criticism here is that you could work on your enunciation a bit.
Thank you for all this . I'm too young to have experienced any of these and tbh didn't even know about most until your history lesson 🙂
That's half the reason why I do these videos.
Thank you for producing these videos! I find this sort of history fascinating and your attention to the relationships between the players makes me feel like an insider in the early days of video game development. Great work, I hope yo keep them coming!
Loving these videos about interesting topics from far before I was born, thanks!
Love your stuff, Michael! Early computing is such an interesting topic and you present it very well
I love gen 1 stuff, not enough coverage out there
Nice! This was such a funny era.
I had a home Pong clone when I was a kid, but it's so long ago and I was so young that I don't remember what brand or model it was. I do remember it was possible to get the ball stuck in a pattern where it bounced back and forth out of reach of any of the paddles effectively soft-locking the console.
Yeah that sounds about right.
Hell yeah! Stoked to see another upload from you.
Glad you appreciate what I'm putting out!
Wait-wait-wait... "human hair wigs and floor coverings"? I'm not sure how I'm supposed to parse this. Is it (human hair wigs) and (floor coverings) or human hair (wigs and floor coverings)? Because the idea of a human hair floor covering just... does things to me that I'm not enjoying right now.
Let's pretend it's the less creepy one and just... not think about it too hard.
I wonder how convoluted the relations between companies in the early era of the video game market were they put in the shape of a relationship chart like they have in side materials for dating sims/harem anime.
Loving this series on Bronze Age games, thank you
Banger video. I had no idea Taito was founded by a Ukranian refugee. Crazy how so many pieces of history just come together to create these weird junctures.
The more you learn, the wilder the industry's history is going to get.
You can actually "Get Ye Flask"!? Simply Amazing.
I have a lot of respect for Ralph. I got to meet him in the early 2000s at a game convention.
I never had the opportunity, sadly!
idk how I haven't found your channel earlier! excellent work
It's a good thing the video games industry has matured so much since this time. Can you imagine that? Publishers releasing borderline copies of a really popular game just with different skins and gimmicks? Why, with the internet, they could do REALLY scummy things, like requiring a constant internet connection, or making their game a subscription, or *releasing* the game for free but charging for individual items and minor aesthetic changes that do little to nothing to alter the gameplay. Goodness, they might even make these things only available for a limited time and then gone forever if you don't play for dozens and dozens of hours to either earn these items for "free" or pay real world money for them. Now wouldn't THAT just be irritating and anti-consumer!
Love these early vidya history videos. You're great at talking about this stuff.
i do wonder if fans will ever try and fix Ultima 8, ore perhaps 9 if that's easier. Ultima deserves a big fanbase in the modern era
iiiiiiiiiiiiiii
whats going on with the paddles at the beginning?
That's me recording a video while emulating pong and using thumbsticks to control both paddles at once. It's uh, not easy.
The fact you need to specifically tell the game you want to swim in the water to avoid drowning is so funny to me. What is is simulating? Just walking into water with the intent on drowning is not the default reason people go into water.
Good history lesson, as usual.
Thank you for a very cool video!
