Umm... the stock DR 650 rear shock does have compression adjustment. (It took me many years to realize this. ; )
🇦🇺😎👍Hey mate I did the ultimate suspension kit through my DR 650 Assaurass. High tech springs , gold valves etc and I’m quite dissatisfied. While the suspension works well and the bike is a lot more nimble I think the only way to make it more plush is to change everything … great mods
Thanks for the feedback, I found after I sold some of the old parts doing the fork swap was actually cheaper than modifying the stock stuff would have been!
Love the trikes!
Hell yeah man
This looks like fun
Kickflip! Kickflip!
More trike please
Dislike just because of music in background
Just a big kid!😂
Not bad for Creston in January. A little less snow here in Arizona!!
Great video. I didn't see a video on any mods on your bike. It would be nice to know about your suspension.
Glad you enjoyed it, here's a video I made about my fork swap ua-cam.com/video/TnZVQrEOBZs/v-deo.html, I also have a video about my rear shock setup on my channel.
@ oh thank you.
This bike shreds we left this bike this bike recovery mission if that was on purpose it’s was funny
@Sneaky22ok hahaha hadn't thought of it that way, certainly wasn't intentional!
Nice bike
Good review. I've had my KLR 250 since new in 1998 and have enjoyed it every weekend since. It's a great all rounder for dirt and road.
Hard bikes to beat for sure!
What the ##### is a y zed
I'm pretty convinced that this little bike can tractor up anything! (provided you get enough momentum! 😂)
Sweer!!!
Have you ever road a Dr 350.
Imagine rallying at night there, with no lights
Sounds terrifying but fun!
have the studs totaled from the bit of street riding yet?
Not yet, they've actually lasted pretty well given how much pavement I have rode on.
@ might have to check em out shit
This was such a wicked ride, what a blast!! Great start to the new year! 🤟
Impressive ride, my friend, that suspension is great, it's impossible to do the same with the stock suspension, greetings from Chile
if it only had another12-15 hp
Open air box, fmf pipe, 790 big bore kit, big valve head, web cam and pumper carb can give you an extra 20hp.
This is fantastic. My stock one is cracked and I’ve been reluctant to spend the big money to replace a piece of plastic. I’ve got some left over cutting boards from a past project that will be perfect for this! Not sure what tooth count your jigsaw blade is, but the fewer teeth the better for reducing melting while cutting.
Thx!! I will keep your DIY video for my winter maintenance and swap the OEM if needed.
Damn, wicked ride fellas! 🤟
Great ride, thanks for not focusing on my crash!
My bushpig hates the snow. Mud ,gravel , and even sand are completely manageable . In snow about the only thing i can do is drop it on my leg.
I avoid riding the snow on my DR, its just too heavy i guess.
Cool video, but: Suspension needs damping, which is controlling the speed of the oil moving in the shock. Dampening is making something moist.
It was not intuitive (to me) to spoon off the second side of the tire (3:28) as you did. I have always struggled trying to spoon it off on the same side. Getting the levers in my way (wrong) was incredibly difficult. So thanks, I will try it that way. On another note, I have seen many tubes come with two nuts on the valve stem. Is one meant to to go in the inside, both on the outside, or is one a spare? I watched a friend do his and was puzzled because he put it inside even though the tube had a nice metal piece that looked curved to meet the rim. enjoyed. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I have found this way to spoon off the second side of the tire to be much easier. With the valve stem nuts I always put one on the inside and the other on the outside. But I always just finger tighten the outside one.
Which campsite was that at 6:28? Also, at 12:27 heading down the Corbin Rd. And then into the Flathead, how long is that rocky section in the water? I was there on a loaded 1200 and did the first bit but did not have the skills to navigate it much further, so turned around. Lastly, are those semi secret routes or could you show some inset maps in the video? Thanks. I enjoyed.
Thanks for watching, The first camp site was Caribou Creek rec site at km 101 up the B-road, The rocky section up the Flathead is about 200M with a few shorter sections after it as well, I do know that they deactivated it again in august this year so they may have added cross ditches and other deterrents. Nothing on this trip was secretive at all, I just looked in the back road map book and started going. I can share the route if you want.
I was trying to figure some of the routing out. If it is easier to answer via email, I put my email address in the description of my Kinbasket and the cliffs beyond, video. Not sure where 1:46 to 2:20 is. The bridge at 2:42: is that east of Fairmont crossing the Kootenay river? At 3:38 is that the Westside road? Not sure where 4:31 to 5 is. At 550, is that at the ENE end of Kinbasket Lake and then you take the B road back west towards the campsite. I could not tell if that road is still open. Was that filmed summer 2024? And then I take it you continued further west past the campsite? Then when you came out of there you seemed to be at Valenciennes Rec site. We continued further north there and came across some great scenic riding. Think you would really enjoy it. I made a short video of it called “Kinbasket and the cliffs beyond” The main road that continued on was completely blocked by trees. We got stranded at Valenciennes in early August because of mud slides. And thanks for the intel on the Flathead, I might try getting thru the washed on river/road section on a smaller bike this summer. Doug
@@dougiverson4297 Alright! filmed in July of 2024 and here is a link to my map: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1sYtdzVMAqNvSACZC1BrG3ldkgVAhmQQ&usp=sharing 1:46 to 2:20 is a interesting trail that goes from Kimberley to Skookumchuck. 2:42 and 3:38 you got those right. 4:31 - 5:00 was a quad trail that connects from Spilmacheen to Golden but burned this summer. 5:50 is the bridge over the end of Bush arm. The road goes a long long way past it. We rode to Km 125 where they started counting again until about 20KM. I watched you Kinbasket mudslide video, Scary stuff and pretty epic terrain. I want to go up that way next time i'm in the area. Let me know if you have any questions, Tyler
Good show!!! Glad you have a riding buddy willing to try some snow. I had some gripstuds and they worked very well on ice, I think you will like them for ice/hard packed snow. Thanks for the goggles defogging tip.
Thanks! The goggle defogging works great but is hard in goggle so maybe only do it with an old pair!
Are you allowed those ties in the road I know in Australia we aren't but we don't get snow in many places so it's not really too big of an issue
My understanding is that in British Columbia I'm allowed to have studs that protrude no more than 2mm. These are pretty close so I suspect I won't run into any issues with law.
Studs are awesome!!!
hello, How is your geometry after the modification :) ?
Shockingly good. I was surprised by how good it worked
@LakemanADV I bought the front end, and with the wr front wheel, I can use the OEM speedometer. And bought a Sachs rear suspension from a Husqvarna. :) I hope within two weeks gonna be ready. And the big plus, after I changed the supermoto wheels, I realized somehow the previous owner gave me 18" rear wheel, with cushdrive :) awesome.
Currently have a T7, looking for something a little lighter and doesn't feel as top heavy for BDRs. Did Colorado BDR and it was a beast to manage in the slick sections and off-camber rocky sections when going slow
Yeah the T7 is a beast, the DR is more maneuverable for sure, especially with decent tires.
@@LakemanADV I ended up with a DRZ400
Awesome choice! Sometimes I wish I had gone that way
Also worth mentioning, don't be deterred by the need to recharge the shock with nitrogen. I rebuilt my rear shock 10K miles ago and only used 78% nitrogen, filling it with a mountain bike shock pump. I've had no issues since. If sourcing N2 is a barrier to rebuilding your own shock, consider using a 78% N2 source, it's abundant.
indeed. i have always done the same on my rebuilds but left that out of the video as people always seem to have strong feelings about using the 78% N2
Air works fine. I have a welder which uses Argon and a Racetech setup for recharging the shocks. On my 1985 KDX200 I experiment with different pressure settings. 160 to 180 PSI works best.
I installed a Sachs ZF shock on mine and it made a huge difference.
From a Husqvarna 2006- ? :)
Had the 1985 version (orange). Bought it brand new when I was 19. Put 18,000 trouble free km's on it in 3 seasons in Central Canada. Hard to get more than 7 months riding a year but I always tried to get at least one ride a month even in December, January and February. Wish I still had it.
Awesome bikes for sure, I'm in eastern BC so I feel you on the shortened riding season. Tough to find parts for these things is the only issue.
What is your cowling? Is it the garbage can cut down?
@@rabidwookie606 indeed it is!
Awesome video! Your suspension sounds squeaky...does that old xl have grease zerks on the linkage or is it a take-apart bearing setup? My 1988 XR200R had lovely grease zerks on the linkage....so handy.
Yeah it was in rough shape lol. It does have grease zerks but they were clogged. I did dismantle it and manually grease it and it has since been all good.
You didn´t make the springs stiffer with your preload spacer mod, you just increased preload which affects the sag of the bike ( how much it sinks in when you sit on it ) but doesnt make them stiffer. If you wanna increase the spring-rate of your original springs, cut a few coils from the spring, which increases the spring-rate and is what you really want. You add the lenghts that you´ve cut to your preload spacer afterwards.
Although it didn't change the spring rate it did have the effect of the forks riding much stiffer as they now ride much higher in the stroke with the extra preload. But yes I should have clarified that in the video.
You contradict yourself in your own statement. Cutting the spring and adding a spacer is the same thing as just adding a smaller spacer and letting that part of the spring remain compressed.
@@TheGamersRace No not true. Cutting springs shorter increases the spring rate. Adding preload will make the forks more stiff on small impacts.
@@speedtoad6167 Maybe on a standard spring, not on a progressive spring.
high quality
Awesome video. Where were you riding, I need to add that area to my bucket list. That looks incredible.
In Kootenays of British Columbia. Endless awesome terrain up here.
Do any year yz forks work?
@@MS-sk7kw not certain. My understanding is that from about 2000 to 2005 will work using this method. 2003 for sure. Yamaha sold a boat load of yz400, yz426 and yz450s during those years so they are easy to find now.
If you can get the forks from an 05 or newer WR that are the open chamber style. They changed the brake line routing in 05 to a cleaner set up, also get WR 450 forks because the damping is set up for off road rather than motocross. The MX forks suck for off road riding when on the original Yamaha bike. The wr forks are also equipped for the odometer drive.
Worth noting the dr is about 120 lbs heavier than yz is so the MX valving actually works pretty well off road.
Subbed, thank you for sharing your knowledge amigo! 🙏
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Tough ride for Ali$on!
Lakeman I can’t believe you spent the first night in a hotel
Awesome fun ride!!
Looks sweet
