Fins and Fossils
Приєднався 23 жов 2020
I'm an angler and fossil hunter, and I'm here to share my nature adventures in the Topsail Island, NC area. I'm a trained nurse, but I have been out of work for two years due to a rare chronic illness of the nervous system called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. It has affected my life in every way, but I'm thankful that it took me to Topsail. I've been obsessed with sharks since forever, and Topsail has great fossil hunting. My boyfriend introduced me to fishing in the area a year ago, and I was quickly hooked. These two hobbies have helped me focus on the nature and beauty around me, instead of the never ending storm that's going in my body. I hope that you enjoy my videos. I'll try to be myself and show you how thrilling landing an over slot red drum is, and the magic you feel when youre the first human to hold a fossil that's at least 5 million years old. You can follow me on Instagram @finsandfossils. Please like and subscribe, and feel free to drop a comment!
Shallow Water Sight Fishing, BLEEP! with KC Burns
Hey y'all! I know it has been TOO LONG! I was introduced to the wonderful world of chronic migraines this summer, and it really hindered my ability to go fishing. Thankfully, I'm on the mend, and I appreciate you for sticking with me! I hope you all enjoy this video. As you may know, I have traditionally fished with bait, but I have been working on my use of artificial baits as of late. Recently, I discovered that I have a fishing soul sister, KC Burns, and she has relocated to Topsail Island, NC from Texas. KC has been fishing and hunting her whole life, is a fly fishing fanatic, and has been a poling skiff guide for 8 years. We recently linked up and have been fishing together every chance we can get. She has taught me a lot, and I was so thankful for this experience - to sight cast my first redfish. What a rush! You can follow KC on IG @ senoracapitana, TikTok @ saltyfly, and if you want to book a poling trip with her, you can check out her page at anycreek.com/sightfishtopsail. I can't wait to get back on the water soon with KC, and we will be sure to bring you as much content as humanly possible. THANK YOU ALL!

I caught my BIGGEST Sheepshead on Surf City Pier!
Переглядів 10 тис.4 місяці тому
Hey y'all, this one is short and sweet! The Sheepshead have been nibbling away on the pilings at Surf City Pier recently. Depending on the conditions, some days you can see scores of them from the deck. On this day, the water was a bit murky, and I wasn't able to sight fish for them. However, dirtier water can work to your advantage with Sheepshead, as they have good eyesight, and can spook eas...
Kayak Bridge Fishing for a YUMMY Dinner - Catch-Clean-Cook Sheepshead
Переглядів 34 тис.5 місяців тому
Hello friends! I'm back with another kayak trip, this one was right in the heart of Surf City, NC. I caught some fiddler crabs and hit the pilings under the Surf City Bridge in search of one of the most delicious inshore fish: Sheepshead. They can be tricky to catch, as they bite very lightly, and are easy to miss. Not only is it a tricky species to hook, but the location was tricky as well. Ne...

It's been wayyy too long, y'all! I'm so happy to be back on the water. As some of you know, my pup, Oshie, had a cancerous tumor in his paw pad, so I was sidelined from fishing for a couple of months. Unfortunately, his stitches busted open 3 days after surgery, so I was doing some pretty intensive wound care for the month following surgery. He's finally healed up, so I feel OK about leaving hi...
How to Catch MUD CRABS for Sheepshead, Red Drum, and Black Drum Fishing
Переглядів 9 тис.7 місяців тому
Hey y'all! I wanted to show you how I catch mud crabs for bait. They are great for catching Sheepshead, Red Drum and Black Drum. I use them for inshore fishing from my kayak, and for targeting Sheepshead on the ocean pier. Find them on muddy banks, under rocks that are submerged at high tide. Happy hunting!
RED DRUM from my Old Town kayak and Surf City Pier

It's not always a banger, y'all! There are plenty of fishing days where I only catch one nice fish, or none at all. Here are 4 nice red drum that I caught this past summer and fall, that never made it into a full video. Two were caught from my Old Town Sportsman PDL kayak while inshore fishing behind Topsail Beach, NC, and two were caught from Surf City Ocean Pier, in Surf City, NC. A big thank...
How to catch REDFISH on SOFT PLASTICS! Winter Red Drum Fishing with Capt. Ryan Gleason
Переглядів 4,8 тис.9 місяців тому
Hey y’all! I hope you’re staying warm out there! I usually fish with bait, but North Carolina had a 6 week ban on possessing any striped mullet, so I’ve been forced to learn to fish with artificial baits. I went out in the flats near North Topsail, NC, with my friend Captain Ryan Gleason with Drifter Charters and Sportfishing. He is out on the water almost every day, and knows where to find the...
3 Species, 1 Bait - Kayak Fishing with Mud Crabs for an Inshore Drum Slam - Surf City, NC

Hey y'all, here's another belated kayak fishing video for you! This was from a day in October, when I had no plans on fishing. I was walking the Surf City, NC bridge, when I looked down and saw an over slot red drum swimming in the shallows. So, I bailed on my walk and went in search of that redfish. I can't be sure that was the same fish that I caught, but I like to think so. I was planning on...
EPIC day of REDFISH in a creek a low tide by kayak

Hello UA-cam! I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to put out this video. I've been having some struggles with my chronic illness stuff, and I just hadn't been able to get around to finishing it until now. This was the craziest day of redfish fishing that I've ever had, and I feel so lucky that I was in the right spot at the right time. I took my Old Town Sportsman 106 PDL down a creek near New...
How to catch RED DRUM in the summer heat in NC! Featuring Captain Ryan G and 7th_evan_fishing
Переглядів 23 тис.Рік тому
Hey y'all! This video is from my birthday fishing adventure behind Topsail Island, NC. The summer heat has made the red drum fishing difficult. We found that they were not having anything to do with artificial baits, and we had our best luck on cut mullet on carolina rigs. Thank you to Ryan Gleason with Drifters Sportfishing and Charters out of Sneads Ferry, NC. He really knows his stuff, so if...

Parabéns 👏 lugar maravilhoso 👏
New to your channel and loving watching you in your natural environment! Thoroughly enjoy my fishing but never fished from a Kayak(you not only make it appealing but rather comfy) Keep up the Great content👏👏
I don't want to be that guy, but I always believed this was a basic thing. With a spinning reel. . you don't cast and crank with the same hand. . . that just isn't what 99% of people do, and that is for a reason. It's easy to switch the handle over , so just do it. and cast with your hand over the reel seat. . should never move from that position. ever. . that will help with accuracy and power.
Thank you for the insight. I have a disability with my right arm, so I fish kinda goofy. I’m right arm dominant, but I have weakness in that arm, so I fish left handed as I can’t fight a larger fish with rod in right arm. I’m having to adapt with my coordination being off etc, and trying to find the best way to do it for myself.
Is that the motor or a vibrator?
Hit with boat prop
😂
All in all seems to be a great fun day. 🌹🏆🌹 Nothing better than to be on the water.
Thank you! It sure was a fun day.
Love ya work girl, your a weapon and pretty to watch
Love ya style ❤😊

amazing
Very cool.
The big drum at 20:30 seems to have the Whirling Disease...
what was that video about.
Awesome video...FishOn!!!
Thank you! I can’t wait to get to the point where I can be laser accurate on all those fish a missed. And maybe not have the bail closed when a pig eats in front of me 🤣
Quite different then fishing bait, or from the pier, ain't it? But I noticed something we need to work on! Come see me!
I think there’s plenty of things I need to work on 🤣 Been out a few more times with her since then and I’m feeling a lot more confident. Standing up straight, not leaning to cast, casting straight overhead, my nerves are better, so I feel like I’m making better casts etc. This was definitely a whole new world for me, but I’m excited to become competent with it.
@finsandfossils that's great,, confidence is key to success! Bring KC to the pier sometime!
THAT A GIRL 🐟❤
Glad to see you back. Fishing with lures is the only way to go. Glad to see you stuck with it. The joy of that first fish🙌🏼
Thank you so much! Yeah I’m kicking myself in the butt for not trying it more earlier on. Oh well, I’m doing it now! I’m looking forward to being more accurate and sticking more fish. Practice practice practice!
It’s easier to see the fish when you’re 2 feet above the person fishing. Seems the stress came from the guide rushing and the delay that’s natural between someone saying now and the act of casting
Oh yeah, she knows she can see the fish first. I don’t think she was rushing me, they were soooo easily spooked in that shallow water that she needed to me to cast on them before they could feel the boat. It was definitely intense and a lot of excitement.
She totally amped it up and added more pressure than was needed. Have been in similar situations wo that kind of yelling.

Nice job. That's a thrill in skinny water.
Thank you! It sure was a thrill! Very different from my past fishing. Can’t wait to do it again!
Why did you leave the hook in the last fish you caught? Poor fish will die with a hook in its mouth!
That is 100% not true. If a fish swallows the hook, it is better to cut the hook off than trying to remove it, which will cause lethal damage to the fish. In fresh water, the hook will rust and disintegrate, leaving the fish unharmed. This is standard practice when fishing. The fisheries managers instruct fishermen to cut the hook when swallowed for this reason. In saltwater, the hook will undoubtedly rust out even quicker.
Chronic migraines! That sounds miserable. I hope you can get those horrible things taken away. Great video!
Thank you! Yeah I kinda thought I was dying, didn’t realize they were migraines. Apparently TMJ was to blame, so we’re treating that. So far so good!
nice back tat, not trashy at all
Thanks for the kind words and positive feedback ✌🏼
@@finsandfossils you’re welcome ✌️
I grew up on Long Island fishing saltwater, then moved to the Raleigh North Carolina area for almost 30 years. Didn’t get salty except for a few times, but we bought a house in Sunset Beach in August and we’re taking residence next week. To say I’m excited would be a massive understatement.
Oh man are you going to have some fun! So much to explore. Inshore fishing here is magical 🦄
@@finsandfossils I will have a 12 foot semi v hull aluminum built in 1962 that actually has mahogany seats and also a 17 foot Boston whaler!
@@davidsampler4191 If you ever need a fishing buddy.... Warning: Rookie!
Good to see you back fishing, migraines suck big time I suffered with them for years. Keep well
Thank you! Yeah we think we’ve pinned it down to TMJ causing them so I’m getting treatment for that, and I’ve been doing a lot better. So thankful to be back on the water! 🎣
Min 8.33 - Nice crack ... you show us the fish or the clam?
Waited all this time, and no good shots. You guys know what I'm talking about
I’m here for the fish 🤷♀️🎣
I know, but you always find a way to give the male audience a few nice shots in your bikinis. Amazing body 👍
Good job Erin. Proud of ya :) see what you’ve been missing out on? Tried to tell ya 😉 awesome video.
Thank you Evan! It really was so different and I now I want to get keep doing it. Need an extra fast tip rod for those 1/16 oz lol.
Nice work girl!! That was so fun to watch the anticipation was crazy. 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you so much! Lots of anticipation in that day. Can’t wait to try it again!!
We've missed you!!Cool drone shot. I loved KC barking orders and whispering too😂 Awesome Drum and what brand are those shorts?
Haha those fish weren’t waiting around! It’s wild how easily they spook in that super shallow water. You don’t have much time to trick them before they know you’re there. We’re twinning in our Marsh Wear shorts. That’s actually how we linked up. She commented on a fish pic in a local FB group with me wearing them, and said “hey! I have those same shorts and they’re the best!” And they are.
@@finsandfossilsYou'll be slaying them in no time. Looking forward to the next video and I'll be getting those shorts for my daughter. They have a house on Bogue Sound just a mile up from Emerald Isle Bridge. She'll definitely love them
I had no voice 😅 so between trying to make sure she could hear me and the excitement, I sounded crazy 😂
@@Captureprosaerialimaging lol. Nice job putting Erin on the fish. Can't wait to see what kind of trouble you two get into next
🤣🤣👯♀️
That's a nice boat. And I like the drone footage.
She does have a nice boat! And she has a nice drone 🤣 That was flown from land and we didn’t see all the fish from the footage until later. Such a crazy different perspective!
@@finsandfossils Top Sail Island is such a nice place to play in nature.
It’s paradise to me!
so nice to see you back on the water😎
Thank you! It’s good to be back!
Good to hear from you again. Send me her info. I would really like to go sometime. Thanks!
Hey Rodney! Her info is in the video description. She is a badass for sure! Anycreek.com/sightfishtopsail
Darn good job girl. Takes a lot of patience and your partner lead you to and through it. Have fun girls.
Thank you! I was definitely hell bent on getting it figured out. Been getting some more practice in since then and feeling even more confident. I’ve learned a lot from KC in the few times we’ve been out! So different from what I’ve been doing for years. Can’t wait to get deadly accurate 🎯
Had to come back and watch it again!
Thank you Scott! 🤙🏼🎣
i like fishiing
Me too! I’m kind of addicted 🤣
Great learning experience ACCURATE CASTING IS THE KEY. 🐟👍😘
Haha tell me about it
@@finsandfossils I always thought your awkward casting technique was due to being in a kayak. That two handed, pass the rod back and forth thing is weird. helpful tips if you are interested: Shorten the amount of line off the tip to no more than 2 feet. Only use one arm to cast it with kind of a snap of the wrist- using the two hand teeter method is for big rods, long distance. You want to essentially point the rod at 10 o'clock in line with where you want it to go. Currently, you're kind of pushing with one arm and pivoting on the butt of the rod - fine for a general cast in that direction, but doesn't work for pinpoint.
Thank you for the advice! Will definitely employ on my next adventure 🤙🏼
