    Black and white checkers on black and white board, worst combination 😮

  • @gunnarholmstedt3089
    @gunnarholmstedt3089 День тому

    12:16 Nice variant, but why isn't the 3-point a point that white wants to make? Ace and deuce are already made, so white is committed to blitzing and then the order in which you make the points should matter a lot less.

    • @AlexEshaghianBackgammon
      @AlexEshaghianBackgammon 21 годину тому

      Good point. I think because white still has two checkers on the 18, her position is not as amenable to blitzing. If the two white checkers on the 18 are moved to the midpoint, all the checkers are closer to the zone, making a blitz easier.

    • @gunnarholmstedt3089
      @gunnarholmstedt3089 17 годин тому

      @@AlexEshaghianBackgammonWhite already has 10 checkers in the zone, so it's a quite serious blitz threat already. If you move the checkers from 18 to 13 and leave the rest untouched, I think it's a pass regardless of whether the checkers are on 3 and 10 or 4 and 11.

    • @AlexEshaghianBackgammon
      @AlexEshaghianBackgammon 17 годин тому

      You're right. It turns out to be a big pass when the checkers are on the 3 and 10, and too good when they are on the 4 and 11.

    • @gunnarholmstedt3089
      @gunnarholmstedt3089 16 годин тому

      Yeah, I was just thinking from the take side. It all makes sense. It's slightly easier to reach the higher points from the mid and you take away one open point in the contact zone, so there are fewer things that can go wrong. Cool variations.

    Joe was a great guest - went into exquisite detail explaining the rationale for his moves, and why he chose it instead of other plays. Joe has been a disciplined student of the game the past few years, and it shows with his understanding of positions and his recent results. Alex, as always, your alternative viewpoints on select moves adds value to the learning also.

    I tuned into the premier a bit late... but I like Joe's style... as newer player (3-years) and an intermediate who also has struggled with mental math his whole life, I know I can at least handle the calculations and thought processes that Joe is doing with a little practice... so, it appears there's hope for my advancement!

    I would like to add a little extra strategic concept to this fantastic video another reason to play safe if opponent has the 3pt board is not only because of the extra dancing numbers, its because even if you enter, escape is harder due to some numbers being primed depending on where we enter, and because we have the weak board, our opponent can continue to attack us with extra impunity as we lack defence to make such attacks too risky to undertake

    • @gunnarholmstedt3089

      The likelihood of getting trapped if hit is of course an important factor here, but another really crucial factor here is also the pipcount. If you modify the pipcount a bit, you will get completely different results. Knowing the pipcount can be really important in letting you find the correct play. You need to weight the cost of getting hit versus potential upside. If you move one checker from the white's 6-point and one checker from white's 8-point to the midpoint, now black is 7 pips ahead in the race before the roll. hitting will become a huge blunder, since the upside of the hit is smaller and the cost of getting hit is higher, since you're doing so well in the race anyway. Each factor will be pulling in one direction, but the pipcount will often trump the other factors, especially, since you have escaped the back checkers to full freedom and the pipcount is likely to determine whether you need to play for the race or hit loose to prevent the checker from jumping your prime. I have made some variants with different pip count in the different variants where the bold hitting play is correct in the variant where the opponent has stronger board and better prime in the front position and and the safe nonhitting play is correct in the variant where the opponent has a weaker board and weaker priming structure in his front position, just because of the importance of the race and the difference in the cost of the opponent escaping your prime with his last back checker. Often in backgammon, the pipcount will give you the answers you need.

    Thanks as ever for all the great videos, a joy to watch. A suggestion for the future: often in the books there are quite detailed, complex analyses of various positions, backed up by XG evaluations. It would be interested to present some of these positions to expert players and ask them to explain what they would actually do in a match situation - are they capable of such detailed analysis or do they rely more on judegement in real matches?

    • @AlexEshaghianBackgammon

  • @gunnarholmstedt3089
    @gunnarholmstedt3089 10 днів тому

    20:12 Your variant with the 61 removes the spare from the 8-point, so making the barpoint will blot the 8-point and leave a double shot without putting any checker on the bar when the race in close and you have a weaker inner board, so now the double tiger is not compared to making an additional point but rather to nonconstructive safe plays like 10/3 and 13/6.

  • @gunnarholmstedt3089
    @gunnarholmstedt3089 10 днів тому

    Nice video. Keep up the good work. I have some thought about a position that would have deserved some more attention. 18:01 This one is really interesting whether to run or make the deuce point with the 64. Being ahead in the race would point towards running, but what's going on here, if you look closer, is that XG has 6 points and 4 of them are stripped and if you make the deuce point, you have four point board vs a two point board and you have direct contact against all of XG's points and there is nowhere to hide, so it can become awkward pretty quickly. Look at how many numbers will force XG to leave a direct shot next roll. Of course, you get seven points, so you will probably have to give up something soon too, but XG has to move first, so you kind of create a zugzwang for XG even though you are ahead in the race. Your blot is quite safe on XG's ace point for the time being with no great imminent blitzing threat. If you run out, not only do you leave a direct double shot, but you release the pressure and let XG play safely behind the contact zone and can build the board in peace to be ready for when you need to clear points in the outfield. Since you have your deepest point further back than XG and have an advantage in the race, XG will have a timing advantage in the mutual holding game if you don't get hit right away.

    Hey Alex ☺️ commenting as I’m watching. Game 1 @2:55 with the 3/2, I think I might have left the checker at 13, and gone 8/6 and 5/2. Looking fwd to seeing the analysis. Game @10:24 the 1/6 from the bar and 3 back, why not make bar and keep them pinned? Looks like I had the right idea to leave one, but the wrong move with the 3/2 😎

    Glad I came to the right move after pausing and thinking for a couple minutes. Don't know if I'd be able to do it OTB because I likely wouldn't think that long even without a time clock as I ended up counting hits for a few different positions, but it was a good exercise for analysis. I was mainly thinking about how bad those blots in the opponent's home board are and that it's very much a blitzing position for white so anchoring up improves the position a lot. After realizing that, I figured there's no other way to play the 1 even though a lot of numbers hit, because it's still a pure priming play that breaks the mountain and it's not the end of the world if you get hit. Just realizing what the most important thing about the position was made it easy for me.
