Comic Book Art: Struggling To Draw The Head In Perspective
In this video, I return to drawing my comic book series "The Realm Ethereal: The Dream Awakens". Not gonna lie, I stepped away for a bit, about a little over month from drawing. This is one of the last pages of that story arc and I'm actually quite excited to finish this up.
I sketched out the thumbnail and even 'pencil-roughed' the basic layout on the blue line art board before stepping away. Now, having come back to it, I go in to tighten up the pencils. BUT, I have a difficult time, struggling with drawing the character's head in this particular panel. Check out my progress in this time lapse video, as I talk through my process.
The digital manikin posing app I used is Art Pose Pro. It's available in the Apple app store. I'm not sure about Android as I am very much an Apple user.
If you're curious, I did a video about the app here: ua-cam.com/video/VkZpGy27FaI/v-deo.htmlsi=tf1mKg8Un6VLo2of

My Comic Art Journey: From Traditional to Digital and Back To Traditional
Переглядів 13814 годин тому
In this final part of this "My Comic Art Journey" in making comic art, I talk about my foray into digital art in Procreate. Creating what I called "character paintings", I began to see the value in designing characters first before drawing my comic book art. Something I never really did before! I talk about the appeal of drawing comics digitally on the iPad using Procreate. This all started whe...

    When it comes to the double spread pages what size canvas do you use?

    • @ReneArreolaArt
      @ReneArreolaArt 6 днів тому

      In Procreate, on my older ipad pro 2, I go actual print size of the comic at 300 dpi. I find there's no need to do traditional 11" x17" double spreads since the artwork is already natively digital. The limiting factor in Procreate for canvas size is the layers limit. The larger the canvas size, the fewer the layers you get in Procreate. If I'm working digitally, then I want to use all the capabilities afforded me by the tools. For digital, that means having layers. While one can argue that you could use just fewer layers, I find it helpful for me to have access to more layers should I need them. But, that's just me. Your mileage may vary ;)

      Thank you! Looking back at those old pages specifically? I don't really remember...but I sure did a lot of them back then. I want to say each page probably took several days. I was mostly either still living at home going to school, or in college, or just moved out into my own place, which at that time I am working full time job, of course. So probably couple days for each page.

      Thanks for watching, and yeah, I got tons of rejections...and I know lots of others did too. Just the way it goes. Nowadays, there's so many more outlets for people to be 'seen', that it's more 'noise' than anything. So, it probably is even harder than ever. That being said, I don't even think about submitting work to the big two anymore. I haven't in years. I have always had fun drawing and seeing what I can do, that I have always just kept on going for it. :) Event if "it" these days means continuing to work on my craft for the sake of doing it to improve. If in the process someone can see and enjoy my work, then it just gives me that extra little icing on the cake ;)

    Considering how much crap art marvel was producing at the time you were submitting I'm shocked that you never got a chance to show what you could do. The work the submission editor set you to "aspire" to was not to the standard you were producing. However in my opinion your inking leaves a lot to be desired.

    • @ReneArreolaArt
      @ReneArreolaArt 20 днів тому

      I appreciate it, I would have been so stoked to have got a chance back then with one of the big two. But, I also look back and realize how fearless I was in making submission after submission back then: read into that as "I don't know what I don't know". Today, if I were to get a shot, I would probably over think stuff and probably I'm still not ready today!! But that's ok in my book. I honestly just love making my own stories. As for my inking, that's fair, and what can I say, it's always a work in progress. For better or worse, on my own indie comics, I am the writer-penciler-inker-colorist-letter-butcher-and candle stick maker, or something like that ;) I will share this: on one of the few conventions I attended, I did get a chance to sit down with an editor. His name was Bob Schreck. I remember going to see him at, I think, the Dark Horse Comics booth? It's been so long, I don't even remember which show. Maybe it was Big Wow Comic Con or San Jose Comic Con (before it changed its name to SiliCon)? But I went to see him on a Saturday, and he told me to come back on Sunday. So, I did that, and he gave me like a 1/2 hour portfolio review. I remember I created two 3-page samples: one featuring Thor and the others a mash up of Avengers but with Superman appearing. Anyway, I don't fully remember the details of his critique this many years later, but I do remember his saying that my work at the time looked better than 80% or 90% of the work he's seen that weekend. Granted, it was probably all a bunch of amateur artists like myself. Still, I just kept working on my craft through out all these years. But you know what was interesting after that meeting? I don't think I ever submitted again to another publisher. For some reason, and It makes no sense, I just stopped submitting work. I guess I should have been stoked, but after all those years submitting by mail, then getting a live critique from a real editor, something happened. I just stopped submitting and instead just focused on my own characters. Go figure.

    The skateboard idea with grafitti messages relating to the first scene in the annimated story Gotham Night was ripped from a slush pile of a naive submitter. Oh well . Live and learn. Dont beleive me? Not surprized. I have other examples from that same package sent out at that time. Apparently I wasted MY time but some of these parasites benefitted. But ideas are in the air they say. And to complain about stolen ideas has no wings and most people wont beleive you anyway. The point is, BE CAREFUL. But if they do rip off one of your ideas , it should tell yourself something ABOUT YOURSELF. Boost your resolve and confidence. And reduce your confidence in them. Its not about you and your code of ethics True Beleiver, its about pragmatic directives. Save the other crap for Sunday School. The problem is that many creative people looking for a handout and someone to treat them like a son or daughter is bound to end up feeling molested and tossed in the dumpster. Lol. Politeness doesn't solve everything pilgrim. They are just as two faced as you are. Lol. As for the aspiring jobber,Their fear and timidity is definately a handicap. Even when it came to some of the pros of yesteryear. Actually some real idiots and autistic half steppers, not to mention some real OCD a##holes. Some of the best or most legendary were horribly unpleasant to work with. Sorry, No names. 😊

    Two things people didnt mention back in the day was that if there is no job slot at the time of your submission the thank you note gets written before they even crack your envelope. The other thing is that you should be careful when you submit images or themes that prove to be fresh and/or different in way of visual ideas or backgrounds. Dont be stupid.These fkrs WILL PASS ON YOUR IDEAS TO WRITERS , NOT JUST IN COMICS BUT THOSE WRITING ANNIMATED FILMS AND SCI FI T.V. series if they spot an angle. They were and are fkn chop shops people. Business is for adults. Protect yourself DREAMERS.

      @ReneArreolaArt my father threw my collection away when I was 14 because I needed to grow up. Comics taught me how to read and to love art. My best friend got the collection out of the trash and never told me for whatever reason. I had a bad art teacher in 9th grade who didn't consider comic art, art. So, I didn't do anything artistic until just recently. I'm in my 40s now. My friend gave my collection back about 3 months ago. This has sparked so much. Getting these old comics from 85 to 91 back. (1st deadpool, AMS 300, 1 gambit, ect.) He forgot he had them, but he also passed away shortly after. I've been drawing nearly every day since. I forgot how much I loved comics. I hope to see yours on shelves and plan to pick some up. The comic world is so different now. With so many cool stories that aren't just superheroes. Thanks for listening, and I'm excited to keep seeing your work.

      @@noahbodhi8657 My Mom threw out my collection when I was a kid because I got caught playing with matches and fire..but that's an entirely different story altogether!! I love your story about being able to rekindle your joy for comics, the art, and making your own artwork again. And yes, there are comics for every one, different strokes for different folks :) Anyone who can't appreciate what art is anymore has lost the fire within them, especially if they are an "aritst" themselves, just my humble opinion. And I do know that burnout is real too. So is the frustration of feeling like never "really made it" with "my art" for whatever reason. Thank you for sharing your story, may we all continue to evolve and grow.

    • @ReneArreolaArt
      @ReneArreolaArt Місяць тому

      This is definitely an option. In fact, I myself started out with a Webtoon: www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/the-realm-ethereal-the-dream-awakens/list?title_no=693377 But I ultimately decided I wanted to just keep my own comic published on my own website. Plus, the format with Webtoon seems to work better if the artwork is formatted for vertical scrolling storytelling. I tried it for a while, but wasn't my cup of tea. I would draw my artwork like a standard US comic book proportions, then have to slice it up for Webtoons. It became too much work. But, to each his or her own. As long as you enjoy what you are creating, put it out there if you are so inclined :)

      @ReneArreolaArt Місяць тому

      I totally get it. It's like with AI, we artists have to prove we are the ones actually making the art now. It's partly why I decided to switch back to traditional art for my comic book lineart. Plus, I find that drawing my comics traditonally is actually faster, less convuluted for me. I have fewer options when drawing with pen on paper, and there's just something so liberating about that part of the process. And to dive just a little deeper into the whole AI art making thing...I'll never allow anything or anyone to deter me from making my own comic art, because I just love creating my own worlds and characters. Amazing video! Please make longer videos of this nature where you contrast where you are now at 50 with when you started this journey. your experience, change in mindset & what led to them, what are your stand out lessons over the years. Someone like yourself that’s done this for this long and was around especially in the 80’s when western comics was I think at its peak, would serve as a well of invaluable knowledge and lessons to those of us aspiring to embark on this journey like you did. Thank you in advance!

    You're an inspiraiton man. I'm also a CA based artist, just hit 40 and I'm rethinking my career. Been payin' the bills as a designer for the past few years but the call of illustration and comics is just too strong. I started to script a story and flesh out a world w/ some long time friends. Great to see other people doing it, great page, I'll check your work out.

      Thank you, Salvador! That's great you are doing your own world-building and story; I believe creating our own stories and art is a great way to hone our skills and craft as comic book artists. I also pay the bills as a designer, but I've always stuck to my comic book aspirations/creations on the side. In a way, it's what makes doing everything else worth it. Thanks for checking out my work, too.

    So it's not weird to start making comics after your 20s? I'm 33 soon to turn 34 the following week and I been on and off wether to draw my own comics or not. Even though I still want to do it, I just feel discouraged at times.

      It's not weird at all. If you still want to do it then you should definitely give it a try. Motivation is key when starting projections. Also brainstorming is included. If you do decide to make your comment then that's great and I wish you the best of luck 😤👍

      I don't think so. Some people may not get it, but so what? Create what you want to create, if you are motivated. I can find work I did in my teens, my 20's, 30's, 40's, and I can always look back and tell myself I am proud of what I did. At the very least, I never look back and feel like it was a waste of time. For me, the artwork are fond memories of where I was in my life at the time I created said works. If that's all I ever get out of making art, then I really can't complain.

    This is an interesting and informative video. I have been making digital art in MS Paint since forever, and I have always made black-and-white drawings first, and then I would color in the drawings, and then I would add the highlights and shadows. I have heard of the term **flatting** before. On Reddit. But I didn't really understand it. This video does a very good explanation. It is something that I have been doing in digital painting all along. I just didn't know the commonly accepted terms. I also remember the days back when I would just make custom-made clothing for the Sims 2 game, using in-game textures. Later, I found a whole community that would create **Maxis-match** textures. At the time, people would use terms like **Realistic** and **Maxis-match**. Now with the Sims 4 community, people would use terms like **Alpha** and **Maxis-match**, with **Alpha** being the modern word for **Realistic**.

    So glad I stumbled upon your video. Gives me motivation to keep going and keep reaching my dreams even if it is a little harder now with age and that whole lingering thought in the back of my head telling me that the ship has sailed on me. I'm turning 44 this year but I have been working as an illustrator/graphic artist since 1999, I've tried several times to apply as an artist for comic book companies but have always been denied. It really took a toll on my self-confidence. But since the advent of social media I've been trying to get back on the horse and trying to build my own community. I'm also working on my own comic book now and planning to publish it myself. I just wanna be able to say that "I did it", even if nobody wanted it, I did it for myself. Especially for that kid back in the 80's with his head buried in the pages of this wonderful medium day dreaming of creating his own when he grew up.

Good on you for getting back on the horse and building your community! It is a major accomplishment in itself to see a comic book through all the way to print. The great thing about making a comic book is we get to be the producer, director, actor, and effects crew all in one fell swoop if we choose. Enjoy the process!
