My Parents had a 1976 Carrier round one Heat pump installed and never had one problem with it save for it needed cleaning on the outside. We replaced in 2008 with a American standard 20 seer 5 ton heat pump with twin reciprocating compressors in it. A 5 ton compressor and a 2.5 ton I think. The carrier was more reliable but the American standard has been very good. The inside coils had to be replaced in 2014 but they paid for it all and after that no problems. It runs always just about very rarely using the 5 ton compressor. I don't trust Trane/American standard anymore. They used to make there own compressors and there reciprocating compressors were bullet proof that why there prices were higher. Well I had to replace a Trane 14 seer compressor not long ago on my rental unit I own. It was a L.G. that was pulled out of it. I was mad as hell cause I was told that's why are prices are higher cause we make our own. Which was a lie . I confronted him about it and produced my recording of him telling me that, which I always do with contractors. My three year old Gibson heat pump fried itself and not worth repairing. I installed a Ruud 15 seer heat pump in my house(8900$). Well it sucks bad. They don't have a accumulator for a heat pump and no compressor belly band heater . Its very weak on heat and LOUD as hell.. I bought me a dirt cheap 18,000 btu Mini split heat pump for 700 bucks and installed it myself. My house has a open floor plan this mini split cools and heats my whole place just fine. It got 2 below zero here last winter this mini split keep the house at 69 F no problem.My power bill dropped 40 bucks a month this system is a 23 seer and is silent. NO more large systems that are loud and break and even if this mini only last three year at 800 bucks to replace the whole thing is a no brainier. I did it myself and took me about 7 hours . The heating and air guy wanted 5000 bucks to do it. Which I laughed at him , I understand making a profit but that was a ripoff .

The whole flammability concern is absurd. Many houses have a natural gas meter near the compressor, but I guess the EPA never noticed those. I installed a 1.5 ton Della mini-split SEER 22 last Spring which came charged with R32. Made by Medea, like most Chinese brands. I bought to better use my solar energy, just heating and cooling the living areas, but the little guy cooled my whole 2200 ft2 house this summer, even on 110 F days. Good since my central AC died right after I got it running.

The HVAC industry wasn’t ready for A2Ls when it launched outside the US, and it still isn’t ready today, the only circumstance when the refrigerants flammability is an issue is when techs aren’t using key best practices when brazing including; recovering into a vacuum, purging with nitrogen after recovering, CUTTING OUT ALL COMPONENTS NOT SWEATING OUT and flowing nitrogen when actively brazing. The problem is 99% of Techs aren’t doing these practices, which is going to result in igniting the refrigerant when brazing under some circumstances. Otherwise A2L refrigerants like R32 and R454B are fine.

I really dislike the practice of cutting the vent hole in the drywall and leaving the exposed drywall. Air quality is a much greater priority than ever, we should really be sealing up that drywall so that the dust isn't getting picked up by the vents. And for those that want to try and dismiss that concern, you're indeed incorrect. It is a big deal. Yes, there is a lot of dust within a home, including new construction or remodels, but things should also be cleaned far better to remove as much as possible. In addition, sealing air infiltration points from unconditioned spacing is important and that includes these vents, anyhow. Also, I think extra work should be done when extending a duct to ensure that overlapping insulation doesn't separate. Some tape internally and even a zip tie externally. Some movement or shifting when setting the duct or blowing insulation likely will mess it up, even if you've gone through a lot of effort to create "slack" internally. It also looked like you were going to handle it, but when you taped the duct to the collar, the perforation in the lip is exposed. I would have covered that with the tape. The outer tape isn't enough. For air quality, we're talking about microscopic particulates and fiberglass is not something you want in your lungs. And... some better beer. :) Overall a great video, I think you did a great job, it was just things that I get very nit-picky about. You've performed a great service to the community!

to add, the only difference is to include but not limited to: 1. Its in an attic 2. you're crawling around on rafters 3. it's 100 degrees 4. its dusty, dirty and poor air flow, dead mice, rats and if you're lucky a raccoon 5. it's not at hip height, in a conditioned space and you can reach everything 6. you're swimming in insulation 7. you're wearing long sleeve shirts, mask, dickies trousers 8. You're working on sheetrock 9. Everything you touch is wet, because its 100 degrees and you're sweating on everything 10. Your drill battery dies 11. Your head mounted lamp keep slipping and then the battery dies 12. You're doing this for 3 days straight praying for a cloudy day or rain 13. You're going in and out through a scuttle in a closet 14. The customer wonders why this is taking so long and doesn't like you're playing 5FDP 15. The office gives you "Emergency" calls after you're done for the day because you're on-call 16. The office gives you calls because the customer specifically requests you. 17. The office gives you calls because the on-call guy called in for the day. Yea, okay.

My old central ac just stop working. R-22 condenser with a date code of 1989. Compressor finally went. Be hard pressed to get that longevity out of a new unit

Cool idea on the transition box...how do you know how big to make it? My system is 4 ton, 1600cfm but ducted for 1200 cfm, so I need to fix that. I was thinking of feeding 1 - 14" and 2 - 12" flex to 3 different zones of the house and build 3 transition boxes to feed all the room ducts. So...basically 700 and 480 CFM boxes, respectively. I was thinking 1 - 16"x16"x16" cube and 2 - 14"x14"x14" cubes. Would that introduce too much loss in the system?

I think the only notable things on the new unit... it is R-32... and the fan blade. The other changes are simply incremental engineering changes that could have happened on a revised R-410a unit. I do think that 15" of overlapped coil is rather odd. Why not more? Why not less? I suspect the driving concern is storing it in a warehouse and shipping; that allows the unit to be slightly smaller which helps in those circumstances. It really doesn't matter for installation. Now the fan blade. That is cool. There are have been two major advances in propellers in the past few decades and I was hoping that they would make their way to our systems: 1. Toroidal blades: this is the innovation I really want to see. they're much more efficient and even quieter, by far. 2. Serrated trailing edge: this is mostly considered a way to make the movement quieter, but noise is the expression of energy, so the quieter it is, the more efficient it is. I'd like to see both. EDIT: So, I replaced my old AC with an ASHP last year when it died. I am really happy with the system. It was just a drop in replacement... I kept my gas furnace as the air handler and for backup heat. A significant contributing factor to the failure of the AC was the zoning system and a failed damper... and a failed temperature sensor in the zoning board. So, I have been to get rid of all of that and just get a 2nd unit for the upstairs. I was initially rather concerned about R-32. I still have some reservations, but I think I am ready for one. I was going to get an identical R-410a ASHP, but with an air handler, since it would be net new. Since it will be for upstairs, I think R-32 makes a lot of sense. The biggest reservation I have about R-32, still, is having it next to my gas burner for the furnace. Since I won't have this for the upstairs unit, R-32 seems like a no brainer. I am in an area where we get extended periods of below zero (fahrenheit) temperatures in late January and early February, so backup heat is super important to me, even though my ASHP seemed to work fine (I had the thermostat set to burn gas when it was below 5F overnight so I didn't wake up to a freezing house in the event that I somehow messed with my install... it was fine). Perhaps my concerns will prove unwarranted with two separate units and the improved performance of R-32.

Had a daikin dealer give me some estimates today for 410 and 32 fit systems. they have an incentive now for the 410. im hoping to be able to hold off and get this 32 system you are showing. why didn't the rest of the industry use 32?

We need larger fans for more efficient air flow. More air per kW. We need stacked pump mediums. One medium in the circuit inside/outside and a second medium in an inside/inside configuration. It is heat pumps all the way from absolute zero to the heat of the sun.

The concentration of the r32 was too high to be in the range of explosive mix. Between 13,5 and 27%Vol in air it is explosive. Below and above it's not. Try that again with 20% Vol.mix in Air 🤪

I believe the statement was made that all the thermostats could be calibrated / adjusted for readings. I know at least the Nest thermostat has no adjustment to readings. The Ecobee does. Also, thermostats such as Nest and Ecobee can have their temperature swayed by how long the display is on. I know since I have both. Not sure of the others. Years ago I had a Honeywell LCD that had the option to keep the backlight on low level and it would throw off the reading by a degree or two.

What about silicone putty instead of clingwrap? Definitely more insulative, dielectric, won't trap moisture between its layers over time and you shouldn't need to disconnect wiring

This could be all resolved by just manufactures placing the temperature gauge as an external antenna on the thermostat.

My thermostat is in my bedroom and being an ecobee, having the ceiling fan on messes with the algorithm that accounts for the heat it produces. The main reading is always off so I have to set it to ignore the main thermostat and use the room sensors.

So put the thermostat in the center hall, with the least windows. And no direct sun

Before making the change starting at 13:26 (foam in the wall), I urge you to verify that the area between the studs is NOT used for return air. Blocking this flow could alter the temperature in the room that this "duct" is attached to.

CO2 is the best option for consumer. Been used commercially for decades but will never happen because HVAC industry will lobby governments against it. Gas is obtainable without a license fo $3/lb.

Personally, I'm convinced that all this climate change talk is BS and we're all being grifted by the industry so they can develop new expensive garbage to peddle more frequently. R-12, R-22 and R-502 were the best refrigerants ever made and systems lasted decades. Now, you're lucky to get 10 years. Evaporator coils are crap today. I'm tired of changing them personally (thank God I'm about to retire), but I wonder if R-32 is flammable enough to ignite in a home where the evap coil pops a leak in a smokers house while they're smoking or lighting up?
