@JournalingwithSteve Hi Steve, here is your dose of daily pronounciation policing 😁 Techo means planner and is pronounced tetsh-oh. So the notebook you showed is not the techo, but their notebook. That just as an aside, I know it isn't important, but is me being an insufferable German know-it-all 😉 I'd like to point out again, there are bargains to be had, for the more pricey notebooks sometimes. I buy LT1917 out of season colours in their yearly sale and some of the companies that sell the new STRP do sell second quality items. I got two of these and their only fault are minor scratches on the cover, something they'd acquire within days of use anyway. The cost per word might analysis seem a bit over the top for some, but it shows how sometimes buying expensive items does not equal mindless overspending.
@@MsJacobowski super good feedback!Thank you! I pulled the picture from a description reading “Techo” … rats. I’ll have to make a corrective comment on that score. I did describe deep Leuchtturm discounts toward the end of the video. What is STRP? That is an unfamiliar term to me. And, have you ever tried Kokuyo notebooks? Thanks again.
@JournalingwithSteve STRP = Sanzen Tomoe River Paper. Sorry, my bad, should have taken the time to write it out. Oh, I obviously missed the part where you mentioned sales. I apologize Sometimes I do not listen as attentive as I should, the cat has a habit of distracting me. 😁 Kokuyo? No, I haven't. Actually, thinking about it, I haven't tried a lot of brands. When bullet journaling got a thing, I bought a LT1917 notebook, because that was what was used. It was my first experience with a dot grid and I loved it. I am not particularily fond of lined paper, makes me think of school, and the grid was so much less intrusive than the graph. Because I have little use of a planner, the monthly set up was become a chore real quick. But I loved the notebook, so I started to write into it, whatever crossed my mind. That was in 2018 and I have been journaling/rantingever since. Sometimes I fill an entire boom within a month, sometimes they last me two years, depending how much I need to vent. My A6 Hobonichi techo is for appointments, habit tracking, and 'today someting nice happened', to keep things from spiralling downwards. In order to keep things a little bit less expensive, I tried to exchange the LT1917 for the white Rhodia booklet once, which I hated. And that's about it. One foray into a Brunnen Kladde (German brand, Kladde being a composition style notebook A5 sized with a cardbord cover), made me realize, I don't mind splurging for the fun, colourful notebooks I really love. In October I switched to the STRP notebooks, but I do have five more Leuchtturm and two more Tomoe River Paper books in stock, so I might change back and forth for a while. I also didn't like the B5 LT1917 I once tried or the B6. There is a sweet spot for me of how far my hand has to travel when writing on a page and A5 is it. Experimenting is nothing I particularily enjoy. Maybe that's the reason why I really enjoy watching videos about other peoples likes and dislikes and experiments with ink and paper.
@ STRP: now that IS handy! Seems so obvious now. LOVE the story and history, reasoning and practices! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing. I didn’t used to experiment the way I have over the last 18 months. My reasons are physical and financial. I fill LT1917 A5’s about once every 3 weeks. 2 years ago my income started getting reduced consummate with my inability to perform my tasks, until I was dismissed and put on permanent disability last month. Disability income cannot support a 15-20 notebook/year journaling habit, so I’ve been on the hunt for a long term solution. My preference is dot grids, but to add insult to injury, dot grids drive vision blur for me nowadays, badly enough that I have to use a straight edge to keep my place. I hope to return to them someday. Yet if all these things hadn’t happened, perhaps I wouldn’t be so value conscious and driven to find a long term solution. Our experience with bullet journaling is quite similar. I picked it up the first year it came out because I am always experimenting with new journaling techniques. At first, I really couldn’t understand why people didn’t just go with the Franklin planner, which I had used for nearly 30 years. These days, I also do not need the planning mechanism, so I abandoned bullet journaling about three years ago, although I may pick it up again if scheduling many appointments and such becomes a part of my daily ritual. So my use of line and graph paper aren’t necessarily preferential, I use them as tools to guide my hand as my vision and ability to use my hands fail. I’ve loved the process of experimentation, as I feel that my discoveries can help others, and I’ve found new ways to keep on journaling. After 40 years and hundreds of filled journals, the last 2 years have produced some of my best journaling ever. For the pain, the vision, the finances, all of it: I give thanks. It’s making me a more rounded, compassionate person.
@JournalingwithSteve Ouch! That's a lot of notebooks, indeed! I have been out of the workforce/on disability for about a decade now. Money is tight, but I do care for the cats in the neighborhood when their folks are on vacation or in the hospital, which is paying for my extras, like notebooks, ink and the odd ball of knitting wool if I need new socks. I even have a job taking the letters out of the postbox for someone, which pays for my cats food and litter. Maybe you could accompany someone to their doctors or treatment appointments? My mom lives in an apartment building designed for older folks and a lot of the older ladies like to be escorted when they need to go to the doctor or have to deal with the authorities. If you think along the lines of a 'paid companion' you might come up with something to earn a little pocket money. There has to be someone who is willing to pay a little for, don't know, a really interesting chess partner or some such. My mom and her friends do pay for getting help with all things internet or setting up their tv, etc. Hope this does not sound condescending or like I think you are not capable to come up with something if you need or want to! If I would go through so many notebooks, I'd have one very nice notebook for gratitude and the rest would be Oxford or Clairefontaine spiral bound pads. We should trade email adresses, don't you think? This is getting quite chatty and lenghty here. 🤗
Oh, I forgot: Is your vision possibly treatable? My eyes were done last year (cataract op) and it is glorious. If my optician hadn't send me to doctor, I would still think it is unavoidable to have bad vision at 60. Don't mean to be nosey or discuss your health at length on the web, so no need to answer, it is just a thought.
I see that cost calculation per word as a kind of practical joke. You can't be serious about that! Or can you?.. Then you can also calculate the cost of the ink used per word, because ink prices can also vary enormously....I'm laughing my head off!! 😂
@@Draco52-h5r well now you’ve got me laughing!😂 I was being serious, but I do see the humor too. I actually did think about ink cost, but figured that a) my math skills aren’t that good, and b) it wouldn’t affect the cost of the notebook. It does affect the cost of journaling though!😂 Thanks for weighing in, and I’m glad you got a good belly laugh out of it.
I enjoyed the cost-per-word analysis. This doesn’t affect the relative comparison, but you wrote dollars per word while saying cents per word. I like the channel!
Doh!! My bad!! Thanks for catching that. And I’m so glad you enjoyed that analysis. I’ll tell ya’; when I first realized that it kinda shook me up. Thank you for the feedback, and I’m so glad you like the channel.
May I dare say that Hobonichi is way over priced? 😮
@@user-gl5ld9vm7i oh now you’re treading on sacred ground there. 😂 I agree. I’ll be touching on that in my next video.
@user-gl5ld9vm7i I wouldn't say that. It is a planner with a second part consisting of 360something graph pages. If I buy a LT1917 planner and a notebook, I pay the same, but don't have the STRP as well as fewer pages.
Actually...I'm gonna have to backpedal. Depending on the model, the Hobonichi Techo can offer a really good value. I'll break that down in my next video; which I'll be putting up in a few minutes.
I use A5, A6, and Traveler's size for journaling. I use A5 and A4 for art and traveler's for art while traveling. I'm curious about what you think of Traveler-size notebooks.
@@DonnaMacauley Hi Donna! Thanks for the question. Are you referring to their “Standard” size; which is 4.25” x 8.25”? I have never owned one, but I have held them and can see how useful they’d be in several applications (jacket pocket, rainy days, handbag/purse, travel for sure). Have you used yours for long?
@@JournalingwithSteve Thank you for replying. Yes, I'm referring to the standard 4.25" x 8.25". They convenient for traveling/carrying with you to a cafe or on a hike. It's a perfect size for those applications. However, they aren't big enough to capture deep work. I've used mine for about 6 years now, but I've journaled for much longer than that. 😉
@@DonnaMacauley that’s kinda what I figured. I can see using them on a hike, maybe getting some seed thoughts down to expand on later. Thanks!!
@JournalingwithSteve A few thoughts, please be warned, I am fairly blunt and often sound harsher than I mean to - The pronounciation of Montblanc is with the T and the C silent... Monblan - There a heaps of new notebooks with the new Sanzen TRP in 52 gsm, like Sterling ink, Papertess, Nanami Paper and others. Hobonichi uses even 48 gsm STRP - A big part of ghosting is the nib size and if the nib is wet or dry writing and the if the ink is wet or dry. E.g., Pelikan nibs are all extremly wet, even the F and EF nib sizes, while Pelikan ink is dry. Pairing a Pelikan B with a wet ink is not for the faint of heart and paper Extremely nice video! You asked for the favourite ink colour. Blue, since a couple of years now, but I have gone through a brown and a green phase, when I was young. Right now I am using TWSBI Midnight, Diamine Skull & Roses and Ink Institut Affluent Dragon.
@@MsJacobowski thank you so much!! I sincerely appreciate direct/blunt speech, and eagerly receive correction. Can’t wait to try out the new lesson on Montblanc pronunciation. Shoot, I just got done shooting another video with a mispronunciation. I’ll note that in the comments or something. I haven’t had the pleasure of owning Montblanc or Pelikan pens yet, but both are on my dream list. I manage ghosting in my LT1917 80 GSM notebooks by using EF or Fine nibs and dryer inks, but it still ghosts more than I prefer. I do like some ghosting, by the way. I think it adds character. I’ll always be an LT1917 fanboy though. The inks you named are lovely. I’ll have to try them.
@JournalingwithSteve Ha,ha! 😂 I just saw I've spelt it wrong, so we are on par. 😁 And thanks for not being offended. 😉 TWSBI Midnight is just a dark blue. It doesn't look like much until on STRP, then one can see a lovely red sheen. It is my everyday ink. TWSBI makes the most beautiful bottles. They come with the little insert, whose name I can't remember at the moment. It helps to fill the pen when the ink is nearly used up. The Diamine Skull & Roses is just a heavy sheener that takes forever to dry. And I bought the Affluent Dragon because it is the year of the dragon, hence the limited edition of this ink and I was born in a dragon year. It has a shimmer and really looks very nice, but requires a broader nib so the shimmer won't clog the feed. This is why I only use it in my positivity/gratitude journal.
@@MsJacobowski so much fun to find favorite inks to use in specific applications. I also enjoy bright, colorful inks for my gratitude journal. I haven’t yet tried any shimmer, but I’d love to. Oh, I wanted to thank you again for the Montblanc pronunciation. “Younglish” (which is a primary resource for voice actors looking for a pronunciation of words) has it as Mont Blank, so I thought I’d approached it properly. But what I hadn’t considered was the country of origin. Grrrrr.
@JournalingwithSteve That's just the thing. Company is German, name's pronounced French. There is French guy on youtube who does pronounciations: Julien Miquel #FrenchWithJulien Regarding the shimmering inks, I don't think, I would buy another. I have fun with looking at it at different angles or in different lighting, but the constant shaking or rolling of the pen to keep the shimmer from pooling is too much of a hassle for longer texts for me. I can afford to keep it in my approx. forty year old el cheapo Pelikan M150, because I do use my newer fountain pens more often. It is nicevto have it around for special texts, though. They say cleaning out shimmer inks is a royal PITA, but I haven't to yet. Off I go, in search of another of your videos. Have a wonderful holiday week! May you and your loved ones enjoy it in good health!
@@MsJacobowski you’re so much fun! Thank you. I’m working on my next video now. I’m determined to get that pronunciation right. Listened to Julian say MonBlan many times now😁😁!
LT1917 A5 dotted for journaling and an A6 Hobonichi Techo as a combined calendar/habit tracker/gratitude journal. I write down one or two things that were great, remarkable or fun each day, because I rant a lot in my journal and I want to have a book that reflects that and why I really like my life. Right now I experiment with a grid Tomoe River notebook, which I like a lot, because it makes fountain pen inks look spectacular, even though I miss the sturdiness and the fun colours of my Leuchtturm book.
@@MsJacobowski Nice combination of paper and practice. I do similar things. Important to get that gratitude in there, right!? Do you prefer a smoother or toothier writing experience?
@JournalingwithSteve I like paper having a bit of a tooth, paired with a juicy [b] or [m] nib and a wet ink. Regarding your next video about brands and prices: I have quite the LT1917 stash in the secret compartment of my bureau. They do sell out their older colours once a year here in Germany and I get them relatively cheap then. Like you, I go through a lot of them, around one per month, so even though I am willing to spend on this, I still have to make sure it doesn't get out of hand. I loved your video, it was the first of yours I've watched. You are a very interesting person, eloquent and you seem to be really nice! Oh, and you have a beautiful handwriting, too. Looks like I will be binge watching your channel over the Christmas holidays.
@@MsJacobowski You are most kind and encouraging; thank you. My handwriting changes quite a lot throughout the day; I have severe arthritis, 3 types, and begin to lose control after about 15 minutes. I have to take many breaks, sadly. I also like wetter nibs, but find the ghosting they afford in the LT1917 with 80 GSM paper to be too much to bear. Sadly. That was my notebook of choice for about 12 years. That changed when I started using fountain pens 2-3 years ago, I hope you enjoy my other videos. I just started the channel recently, and have several hundred planned and mapped out. I intend to present something for people at all levels of journaling in each, so folks can progress from beginner to advanced as they desire and in their own time.
I am a user of A5 and A6 notebooks. A6 as an EDC. 😊
@@Draco52-h5r Excellent combination! I heartily approve!
Great video Steve! I also did a video on a couple of notebooks from Peter Pauper Press that I’ve found at Indigo Bookstores here in Canada. Maybe they can be found at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores in US. They are also great for fountain pens. No ghosting, no feathering, no bleed through. Not smooth like Clairfontaine and certainly not smooth like Tomoe River, but a great feeling if you like the feedback when you write. And they have gorgeous hardcover designs. Totally agree with you on those.
@@MirnasCalmJoys Mina!! Wonderful to hear from you! You know, Peter Pauper was my first notebook waaayy back in the 1980’s. I still use them when the mood strikes me. Thanks so much for chiming in!
@JournalingwithSteve Oh wow, that was the year of my birth! I love their cover designs for notebooks.
Excellent video Steve. You put a lot of work into this! I don't like buttery soft paper: I need a slight feedback. So I'm not a big fan of Clairfontaine and Rhodia. I love Leuchtthurm1917- 80gsm.
Thank you Draco! Have you ever tried the Leuchtturm A4 Master with 100 GSM paper? I find the 80 GSM ghosts too much for my liking. It’s too bad, because that was my journal of choice for decades. I still use the A4 often, at least weekly for longer journaling sessions. I do use the 80 GSM notebooks, but only with my 823 fine nib. Then the ghosting is manageable, even pleasant.
@@JournalingwithSteve I never used the Leuchtturm A4 Master -100gsm. Will certainly try it. One can never know too much. Thank you Steve.
@JournalingwithSteve LT1917 does make a 120 gsm A5 notebook for Bullet Journal. I hated it with a vengeance, but then, I do not mind ghosting at all. But you might like it, though, given your dislike of ghosting.
Same. Love LT1917, but can not stand the glass like surface of Rhodia, Clairefontaine or Oxford. I have zero problem with ghosting and right now, even use a 48 gsm Tomoe River notebook, which I love.
@ yeah…my glassy surface use is more out of necessity than joy. They help me write with a lighter touch when my hands are in a lot of pain. Can’t wait to try that 48 GSM!

Excellent video Steve. For me lined paper....✍👍
@@Draco52-h5r Thank you! I wonder sometimes which I spend more time in, lined or graph. At times I’ll turn philosophical for a season, and I’ll use lined almost exclusively for several weeks. Definitely my favorite when thinking deeply. We’ll have to talk about brands.
@@JournalingwithSteve I understand. In any case, you should use whatever you feel most comfortable with and that delivers your intended purpose. 🙂
@ well said. Thank you!
Hello Steve, as you know I am a fountain pen writer. So I need paper that does not bleed. Well, my experience is simple. The most expensive is not always the best. I have notebooks from 25-30 € ($) and I have ones from 3,00 (three) € (100 sheets - 80 grms ) with a beautiful cover and a storage envelope in the back) that are better! But it may take a while to find it. Greetings from Belgium!
@@Draco52-h5r Hail and well met, Draco! So nice to see Belgium on the radar again. I am creeping towards the issue of brands and quality, particularly as it relates to fountain pen use. I certainly agree. There were brands of notebook that I used to favor, but no longer. I’ve only been using fountain pens for about 2 years, and it certainly changed my notebook preferences. I likewise have spent some pretty heavy coin on notebooks. Thankfully the ones I favor nowadays are more affordable than most.
I am curious…are there paper brands unique to Belgium? I love trying paper from other countries.
Excellent video!! Very good tips and advice. At 72 I don't need them all anymore... I also like handwritten letters with a fountain pen and sending them the old fashioned way via physical mail....(snail mail)...✍ Greetings from Belgium 🙏

Interesting video, thank you. There are probably hundreds of journallers producing UA-cam content, but yours is literally the first one I have come across to raise this subject. The point is that journalling can make a writer unduly introspective and self preoccupied, when the key to mental well being more often lies in taking the attention outside of oneself rather than indulging in the relentless kinds of self analysing that journalling often helps perpetuate. I try to avoid this pitfall by making it a rule to minimise the number of times the word "I" is allowed to appear on the page. Extrospect rather than introspect. You've absolutely hit the nail on the head here, and I'm flabbergasted that the journalling community doesn't discuss this subject more often.
@@laurameszaros9547 SO happy to see your thoughts. This is going to be a regular theme for my channel…Extrospection and confronting the unhealthy side of journaling. Your “I” point is on the list, by the way. Thank you very much for taking the time to weigh in with your thoughts!
