Let me thank you for this timely review. I have been looking for info on Lantern Moon needles for months, because I am thinking of buying a set. There is hardly anything on UA-cam about these needles, other than the occasional unboxing video & instant observations. You have answered some of my questions, brava!! I also wonder about how slicks they are. I want to buy the fastest wood needles, because I want some speed but I prefer the warmth of wood. Hate the clicking of metal needles. Also, I’m wondering about the length. 5” needles are long enough to cross my smallish palm & stick out on the other side by 1.5 or 2”. Is there a reason to want them this long, perhaps better supporting the weight of the project? If not, the 4” needles might be fine & easy to use. Again, thanks for your insights on LM. I’ll be sure to check out your other reviews for the real 411.

Thank you for this video!!! You convinced me that I need to swatch before I start my very first garment and I'm glad I did. The fabric created with the needle size suggested and my yarn choice was way too loose so I used smaller needles, did the math and began knitting. The fabric is great, although I did make some mistakes that I can live with. Thanks for all your helpful videos.

Mindful cable is the only one I've had suddenly snap off at the join while knitting , I was taken by surprise , had no pre-warning. Broken end had steel plies, definitely not a single , but can't say if it is braided inside or not, I just tossed it unfortunately

Sheep die from flystrike either by starvation/dehydration - they are in so much pain they can't eat or drink - or by developing sepsis and/or necrosis from the wounds the fly larva creates. The current data on the mulesing alternatives show they have about the same effect as mulesing but they cost more time and money. I personally don't like the way Aussie farmers mules their sheep: there is no legal requirement for veterinary supervision while mulesing sheep, anyone can do it. But I also recognize that paying a vet to work for you all day however many days it takes to mules your flock will eat up your profit. And that the profit is what feeds the farmers.

What I didn't hear about is the longevity factor in relation to environmental impact. What I mean is that wool, cotton, linen, nettle, and silk definitely are hard-wearing and with proper care the garments made of them can last decades. Case in point: my mum still has a cardigan my grandmother knit for her when I was in kindergarten. The wool came from an unravelled old sweater, not brand new. My Grandmother died in 2004. Mum still wears her cardigan on chilly evenings at home. What I'm trying to say is, how can we compare materials without considering their "usage lifespan"? Surely the more you use your object, the lower their overall impact is?

So. Are you going to do a follow up video to this one? You brought up a couple good things that would be more interesting to explore. The retting of bamboo is one and how the super wash yarn game is changing is another. I don't see what Breathing Yarn said in her video as fear mongering. Nor do I see your response as a be all end all answer. I see both as adding to a discussion that is on going. I think it would be interesting to see your views on what happens to wool once it is gathered and where it goes to be processed and made into yarn.

So sheeps for wool only is unreasonable, but there are wool production focused farms. There are wool sheep like Merino that are focusing on massive wool production. Merino is so overbreed to produce wool that it goes with many health problems like many cravasses in which insects and fungi will grow. All domesticated sheep have to be sheered because that's the way we domesticated them, but meat focused sheep have generally poor quality wool that will at max be some kind of filling material. It's unsellable as fibre for clothing. Mixed quality sheep have decent meat and wearable wool and are generally considered by smaller to mid sized farmers. But those farmers that are generally needed for example in landscaping have a problem in selling their wool, because the market is flooded with cheap merino from big farms. That's of course mainly a big fashion problem (Buying Merinosweaters for 60€ new) but if you're Merino is cheap, it's most likely partly from a big Merino farm in Australia.

I raise chickens. We have to have so many square feet per chicken. But my chickens are used only for egg laying. The same with sheep. You have to have so many acres of land, and constantly move them so that the degradation of land doesn't happen. It states you can have 6-10 sheep per acre of land. 30 sheep per 100 acres of land. For a lot of farmers, this is their livelihood and how they support their families. The same with alpacas, goats, cows, yak, buffalo, and even camels. That's why it's important to move the flock to different parts of their land.

  • @jenuncensored

The phones that they used to make a video leaves a high carbon footprint. The camera leaves a high carbon footprint, too. Natural wood, bamboo, hemp, cork, and recycled materials have the lowest carbon imprint. The highest are beef, fish, pork, chicken. A cup of coffee and tea emits more carbon imprint than the natural wood, bamboo, hemp, cork, and recycled materials. As for child labor practices... nothing within making fibers has been discovered. However, making clothing like buying things from Shein has been reported for years for unethical employment practices. Low pay wages with high work hours. As far as the sheep go, there's sheep videos on UA-cam. They explain why they shear the sheep. They show the process every step of the way. It's very educational. And a lot of sheep farmers will often let you or give you a tour of their farms. The ones that make yarns to show their ethical practices. Sheep have to be sheared. If their fleece gets too heavy, it'll cause problems for the sheep.

This is my problem: 'fear-mongering'. Look, we'll try our best. At least I want to believe in it! The real problem is that there are too many of us and the resources may or may not be enough. Still, we, as farmers and consumers, do our best, particularly when we make our own clothing. Thank you!

I've been on a 2 year learning curve with spinning, dyeing, and learning to use a knitting machine. I started out buying job lots of other people's craft room clear outs and I'd guess most of the history of yarn production is in a crate somewhere in my house, right now. The thing is I'm learning something from each type of yarn and none of this is going to landfill. So, I can't get paralysed into not using it. I did accumulate a lot of acrylics that I gave to the charity shop *because I would love it if someone else can use it* Spinning! My Grandmother's generation were all taught to spin as children. I wish I'd learned such a useful skill early on. Right now I'm trying to learn spinning while learning as much about each breed of sheep. So, that's where I can make most change because I can take time to really think about what I'm buying.

Soooo, I watched both videos (yours twice) and I don't really understand what have you got to be so angry about? you mention in the description and in the video itself that the video by Breathing Yarn is fear and anger mongering, yet the overall tone of her video is much gentler and more understanding than yours? feelings and vibes aside tho, yes, she might have not mentioned GOTS but your "quick and easy" GOTS-powered solution is not really a solution, since for my entire country there's ZERO GOTS certified retailers lol so her more suggestion of "research the brand, do a quick google" is um I'd say is pretty much the same as yours "google if it's GOTS certified" but with more nuance? then, you ignore a bunch of results about child labor, it's literally ON VIDEO at 3:21 the result that you get that children are being exploited in various stages of production. what's up with that? I'm not gonna go through every little detail and disagreement that you have, but overall, coming back to feelings and vibes, your "You can make sustainable yarn choices. Full stop end of sentence" is much less understanding than hers "do the best you can with what you are given" even tho YOU BRING UP LITERALLY THE SAME POINT?? like, in your video you say yourself, some issues are much more complicated and don't have right answers, which is exactly what she says also? and the whole "educated choice" section of your video is the takeaway of her video also??? I am confused. calling her video a BS is a reach a certainly a Choice, considering, that she just lays out the concerns about the yarn industry, which you also do, offers some suggestions on actions you can take if you care about sustainability, which you also do, and conclude with encouragement to make best choice, which you both do? but then you are angry about her video? again, I am confused

Thank you' I really don’t understand what’s so wrong what Breathing Yarn said. What’s wrong with doing your best within your means? Multiple commenters are saying they won’t watch or didn’t finish watching the original video. I feel like it’s really being misrepresented here.

Thank you. I don't understand where this anger came from either. There was no need for it. This video could have easily been done for expansion on Breathing Yarn's video because it does add to the topic at hand.

couldn't agree more with every point y'all have made so far... the tone of this entire vid is hostile and condescending, and if there's rage-mongering happening, it's right here 😒

it’s because of this. you who are likely a reasonable, kind human, were twice unable to hear both the words that came out of my mouth and the evidence I provided to support them because the lies you heard first were more comfortable. you who are likely a reasonable, kind human twisted the facts in front of your own eyes to match what you think they should say (rewatch that timestamp with an open mind, it does not say what you typed), and made excuses for things not said that should have been (gots is printed on yarn bands, no research needed). This unsurprising result makes me angry both that people lie for their own gain (or don’t find it important to research before posting) and that people do not always have the tools or the imperative they need to detect and combat misinformation. The original video allows people to feel issues are too large to manage so it’s ok to give up, feel unable to change the world when they in fact can. If only in small ways maybe, but those ways may just make the difference to one human somewhere, and if you ask me changing the world for even one other human is huge.

@@mistakkesweremade I rewatched the timestamp. still says that the child labor is a concern in the yarn industry, bottom of the answer given to you on footage is that it's difficult to trace due to the complexity of production chain. no, research is in fact needed in this case. more extensive research even, since, again, the GOTS website says that 1) the closest to me retailer carrying GOTS-certified yarns is in another country 2) that there are no GOTS-certified yarn suppliers in my country. if I want to have a chance at finding GOTS certified yarns I have to comb through all of the suppliers listed on their website or individually search every yarn brand I'm interested in OR physically go to a bigger yarn store that's in another city to look for the GOTS certified stamp on the label even tho the website does not list the retailer as carrying GOTS certified yarns.

You’re not torching your channel. As soon as you started discussing, I was pleasantly surprised to see an opinion I happen to share. No, we don’t like child labor, but that’s through a wealthy nation. More than half the world’s population doesn’t live like us. Food, and basic necessities are hard to come by. Families need any income they can get. Also, there was a time in America where in fact children did work at an early age. The world isn’t a perfect place. Thank you for the discussion. ❤

Hi from Australia. Just confirming that mulesing is definitely on the radar here for knitters and yarn producers; there are increasing options for buying non-mulesing yarn and yes, GOTS certification is becoming more popular. We’re working on it! Love your videos, thanks.

THANK YOU!!! I only got about one-third of the way through that video and wondered when she was going to get to GOTS which seemed the simple solution. A quick google search of GOTS gave an interesting article from MDK about a yarn co. that decided to go for a GOTS and several entries of yarn companies listing their GOTS yarns. You're right, those yarns are more expensive, but if it's important to you.... We can only do our best. Well said. I've been a subscriber for a while and will continue. Thank you for your wonderful posts.

Thank you for giving us the facts. I have not seen the video you referred to. Now, I won’t waste my time. I like how you present the choices we make in life and in crafting. How many people burn fossil fuels flying to yarn festivals so that they can buy farm yarn? We need to make conscious decisions and live with the consequences. I chose to continue watching your channel.

There is a ton of fossil fuel used in the entirety of yarn production. Why do people go to these wool festivals? It isn't just so they can buy "farm yarn". It is for comradery and information exchange and families to get together and yes to buy fleeces and spinning supplies and yarn and see the faces behind the production of these things. I burned fossil fuel to go "down the street" to pick up my fleeces which I processed and used fossil fuel to do. The point of both videos is do your research , figure out what your morals are and how to craft with in those parameters. No one way is absolutely correct.
