Bitter Springs a hidden Oasis near Mataranka Northern Territory
A Freshwater Fish lovers dream, Bitter Springs is nestled in amongst a palm shaded oasis in the arid Katherine region next to the small township of Mataranka.
It's a favourite rest stop for travellers to cool off in the heat of the Northern Territory, but we visited it for another reason, it's underwater inhabitants that you won't see much information of in other videos as I watched many before traveling to this spot, and don't believe the signage as I found most of it is wrong or incomplete, I have put the names of all the species we encountered along with some other interesting information in the video.
There are other springs in the area but we found this to be the best and most natural, there is a lot of history in this area so if you're interested I will put some links bellow, I hope you enjoy the video and for more like this please like and subscribe for future videos or check out some of my older videos that are also pretty interesting, Thanks for watching.

Cheers for the great video, it's good to see what to buy from bunnings to set one up!!!
Thanks for watching! yes it doesn't need to cost the world to have a nice little water feature, mine is still growing wall and breeding fish, I love these little tubs.
Thank you so much for all your documentarys truly Amazing ❤😊
Thank you for watching! 🙂
Is the water clean to swim in?
Yes crystal like a swimming pool, and warm, a lot of people go there so early morning is the best time.
Jason is the king of biotopes with a love for local environments - fantastic work
The Australian fauna protection laws allow this to happen. Yes, people are irresponsible and you should not dump your unwanted pets into our delicate ecosystem. But not allowing native fauna as pets has created the destruction of habitat by wild and domestic cats and dogs. Starting the trade in native animals as pets will also create new jobs as their food is highly specialised. Just image cow filled paddocks replaced by forests of eucalyptus to feed koalas, termite farms to feed numbats, invertebrates and worm farms for quals and possums. Not all native animals are suitable for the pet trade. We need to do more to conserve and repair what we have. These cichlids are just one of the species causing havoc, what about trout, red fin and carp. I keep fish and want to be more oriented toward natives. The tank is only small and am restricted to empire gudgeons and pacific blue eyes although these are really hard to get in Sydney as are native plants. I’m in the process of setting up a larger tank which will accommodate rainbows, thank goodness for people like Dave Wilson from Aquagreen.
Hi that is such a wonderful idea! And inexpensive and easy to set up. What months do you have or set up for? And do yoy sell your Honey Blue Eyes? I'm in Brisbane so am a local 🙂
Yes I'm setting back up now and until it gets cold again, for the honeys they can be kept outdoors all year, I don't bring them in, I do sell them but at the auctions, so keep an eye out for them.
@@australianbiotopes4563 thanks for your reply. Have you had success with any other types of pseudomugil aside from Gertrudae or Luminatus? Oh really? I actually bought some off you at the last auction!
@@squeakymcsqueaky9931 Thanks for watching! I think I have bred all of them other than the Redfins.
What do you end up doing with the snails? Are they good eating?
You can ether use them in aquariums or for shell dwellers
@@australianbiotopes4563 awesome thanks!
Very sad, thank you for collecting them
Thank you for watching 🙂
I wonder how many invasive species come from ponds that have been caught in floods, it is so disheartening to know that irresponsible owners are the reason we now have these in in our environment
Some things have the potential of getting away in floods mainly small floods that would overflow into drains, the larger floods like we had in Brisbane would of killed a lot off from all the contamination of all the chemicals oils ext. I was delivering plumbing gear after the floods in Brisbane and the stench of oil and dead fish was everywhere, there were dead fish in the streets like large carp and mullet, the other problem is people just with a lack of knowledge, most don't know it's wrong to release what they don't want or even think it's better then killing it off or taking it back to a pet store, that is why I make these videos to let people know, our local fish group ANGFA has also done up signs for aquarium stores to put up letting people know of the dangers, most have done the right thing.
Great video you guys well done. Fascinating
Thank you! 🙂
Music doesn't help, mate. We need to hear your voice.
Thanks
Your Welcome
Beautiful video and music!
Thank you! 🙂
Come to QLD, Mackay and check out the jaguar cichlid outbreak at our botanical gardens waterway. Pretty mind blowing
If I ever go through I'll check it out.
No idea how you are claiming to be an ecologist or conservationist yet are raping our waterways of healthy native fish for your own profit. Hypocrisy seems rife on your channel
As a fellow conservationist and aquarist in Australia. I agree with you in part, but I am sure mystery snails are the least of our worries. I hope you follow through with invasive species that are actually hurting our environments.
Wow the water is almost stagnant
Not stagnant, it actually has good flow, it is a bit tannin from the water running out of a swamp, they are just hanging around the edges in the grass and algae.
Just amazing. Absolutely love your videos. I never comment on UA-cam but I needed too here and express my gratitude for showing us this beautiful land and native history. Liked immensely ! Also love KFS and your little trips together! Hope to do this one day. Stay beautiful x
Thank you! that means a lot, there is a whole other underwater world out there and sometimes they get over looked, I hope to bring them to people and show what most are missing in their travels, especially people that love their fish as they mostly get forgotten.
Such a beautiful insight into the native habitat of the fish.
Thank you! 🙂
Im From Vietnam , But Im Living In Melbourne , can I join with you ?
I'm not there anymore, I just went there for a holiday, I'm in Brisbane.
What a gem
Thank you! 🙂
Good voice, great cinematography just a really average camera. It could be so much better.
Yes it could but unfortunately I don't have that sort of money, and to make it even worse I lost my drone filming these as well, maybe when my content gets more popular I might be able to afford one 🙂
I lived on Wivenhoe dam 2022 to 2023 and caught cyclids in the dam. I have been 400km West of the coast in FNQ and found cyclids taking over from Sooty Grunter. I have a pet blue gorahmmi I caught in the burdekin.
Yeah it's shocking where you can find feral fish up that way and sometimes makes you wonder how they got there, unfortunately the warmer weather and floods makes for a perfect place for them to spread much easier, people in the tropics have to much more careful or those beautiful places will be ruined, I've come across some scary stuff while filming, it makes me angry some times, hopefully it doesn't get out of hand.
@@australianbiotopes4563 we also have a pet Red Devil about 30cm long caught in Ross River Townsville. We use talapia as Batr bait and join forces to eradicate the pests. The talapia in salt water are good eating I hear 😋👍
@@patrickmcmanus5373 Yeah we got them down here to in the local man made lakes and they have reverted back to their wild colours, nice fish but they don't belong. Just be careful using the Tilapia, if you get caught with it in your possession dead or alive there are big fines, Stupid law as you can buy the flesh now in seafood shops but it's imported of course so the money goes back overseas rather then fixing a problem here. Tilapia actually has a really nice flesh and is farmed all over the world and if you ever have imported fish fingers you are probably already eating it, this country needs to get with the times and maybe try and fix a problem at the same time make some money in the process, we are never going to be rid of them now, they are in just about every waterway this side of the Great Dividing Range and in WA. they should just let people catch and keep if they want to, dead of coarse for food, most will even release them back because they are a no keep fish, I've even spoken to Bio Security about it and it's like talking to a brick wall they are set in their ways with no good outcome.
@@australianbiotopes4563 a scientist told me that they have been catching feral fish since 1960
Love your content. Thanks a lot! What's the floating plant resembling fox tail?
Thank you! it basically is Foxtail or Hornwort, depending on where you come from, I have actually put the scientific name for it on the right in the video at one point, it's a pretty common plant around the world.
I found some at Jellybean Pools in the blue mountains.
Cool! they are pretty common up and down the coast, they look good in an aquarium as a school to.
Great video Jason. One small issue, the background music overpowered your commentary in some parts which was a pity because it is very informative.
Thank you! yes I know and am sorry, I didn't realise until I put it up and it was to hard to change, I'll have to be more careful in future, it's a learning experience for me that I will hopefully get better with in time, the song started out so soft I didn't realise it had such a loud point in it.
Really enjoy All the videos of local Australian ecosystems.
Thank you! and thanks for watching 🙂
Awesome vid mate. Love how you cover plant species also. Well done
Thank you! and thanks for watching, yes I love my aquatic plants my self, but there are so many new species to me in the NT. it's like heaven.

Outstanding as always good sir thank you 🙏🏼 !!! 🔥❤️🔥🔥😎👌🏼
Thank you for watching! 🙂
I so enjoyed my visits there - the first one in July a few years ago was perfect, pristine water, I couldn't get over the clarity of the turquoise water with plants growing far below, quite happily, due to the clarity of the water. I spent many peaceful hours floating downstream on my noodle, loving the scenery. The next time was later in the year the following year,, around September - everything looked frayed and covered in algae - a bit more like what was shown here in places. However, so great to get this underwater look at a very special place, thank you so much!
Yes I guess it depends on the season, weather and traffic, we actually found it really hard to film due to all the traffic, but I guess when you get a place like this that is so beautiful in an environment like that it's going to happen, everyone wants to enjoy it in their own way, I'm just happy it was quite clean and people seemed to be quite respectful of the nature, Thanks for watching! 🙂
"Sit back, relax and enjoy the video". I can do that! Best advice of the day, thank you!
You deserve it, Thanks for watching! 🙂
Challenge u to make that in your backyard 🫵🫵🫵
Only in a small scale or it would cost a fortune, but I'd love to have an in ground pool to try 🙂
@@australianbiotopes4563 geez im tempeted do make a plywood pond outside
@@Pay_attention_Benny I did have and above ground plastic pool like this a few years ago, it lasted about 3 years and I bred a lot of fish in it, also had heaps of plants growing really healthy but it was a bit disheartening pulling it down so I never did another one, I wouldn't be able to do a plywood tank outdoors at my place, the termites would eat it in a week, I've always had my eye open for one of those large moulded ones but they are few and far between, and expensive, I did think about building a steel one and glassing it but I do have trouble with room as well as I also have a lot of tubs for breeding natives to use in y biotope aquariums that I want to do down the track, so for now just a dream.
@@Pay_attention_Benny Check out The Australian Aquarist on here if you haven't already, he is a good friend and does some awesome ply tanks.

I love bitter springs it is easily one of the best natural swimming places in Australia. Though, as you pointed out, it can easily become a public swimming pool. Great footage too, you are braver than me to fly your drone down the creek!
Yes I agree, and Thank you! Nick actually got the drone for this one after I lost mine doing the same in a creek in Cairns, we do take risks with our gear and as a result to get the good footage sometimes loose it, we also lost two GoPros on this trip.
@australianbiotopes4563 That's a bugger. What drone were you using?
@@ClassAves-hv4ps A Mavic Air 3, so not cheap.
I upgraded to an air 3 after I crashed my mini 3 and would still recommend the mini over the air because of how much less stressful it is to fly it being at least half the price. I love your inclusion of drone shots it adds another dimension to your videos.
So beautiful. Love biotope thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! 🙂
Incredible Jason great footage what a beautiful place. Years ago my family and I were camping out there and a massive storm came down and flooded our campsite and we couldn’t leave for days as the road out was damaged and the water level to high to cross.
Thank you! yes it can be a pretty unpredictable place.
Can you also check out the fishes in Barry Springs in Litchfield National Park? Last time I was there I believe I saw what appeared to look like freshwater damselfishes or perhaps grunters. Could be wrong.
