The Dam Busters Raid The Dortmund Ems Canal - 617 Squadron - Operation Garlic
The Dortmun Ems Canal Raid is much less well known than 617 Squadrons famous Dam Busters Raid. However, 617 Squadrons attack on the Dortmund Ems Canal is every bit as fascinating as the Dam Busters mission!
617 Squadron RAF became world famous after Guy Gibson led the Lancasters on the Dam Busters raid. Following the Dam Busters raid however, the squadrons activities are much less well known.
With Guy Gibson posted to the USA, 617 Squadron were left to carry out routine operations such as propergander letter dropping. For some, this seemed to be a waste of such a specialist unit and when Air Commodore Harold Satterly identified a target requiring a specialist attack, he knew immediately that The Dam Busters were the men for the job.
The Dortmund Ems Canal was an important waterway for the Germans, enabling to transport materials and machinery from the Rhur industrial heartland, Satterly proposed to use 617 Squadrons Dam Busting expertise once more.
This is the enthralling story of how 617 Squadron, attacked the Dortmund Ems Canal.

D-Day. June 6th 1944. Operation Overlord (the Allied invasion of Normandy) saw the Allies landing on 5 beaches in Normandy, Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha. The Americans kicked things off landing on Omaha and Utah. Whilst Utah proved to be relatively successful, Omaha would see some of the toughest fighting on D-Day. Around an hour later, the British land on Gold and Sword beaches. The Canad...

FINALLY SOMEONE HAS EXPLAINED LIFES BIGGEST QUESTION
This is similar to how a Lieutenant Governor is the assistant to a Governor of a U.S. state.
thats one of my wrong answers during exams in bootcamp😅
I read this story a while back, and thought that the RAF do not have the capabilities to do this today. But actually after some calculation I think it could be done today, with 1 Typhoon with a Storm Shadow, and 3 possibly 4 KC2's. Whilst the KC2's cannot "daisy-chain" they have a far longer endurance, especially when not fully loaded, so they can loiter, and each KC2 would only be delivering 9 tones of fuel for the Typhoon.
What I've always wondered is why a Lt Colonel is a silver leaf while a Major is a gold leaf. Most people see gold as superior to silver.
Early 19th century, infantry officers wore silver rank insignia and remaining displayed gold. Mid century, all officers had silver insignia on top of epaulets as a nod to infantry being oldest branch. Hence, Majors wear gold along with 2LT. US General officers always wore silver stars.
X Doubt
Sergeant Major General sounds much better than just major general imo
I always thought it was : Lieutenant is kinda like "vice-" something. "Major" just denotes it is a higher form of general than the Brigadier. It's kind of like asking why a "junior" is more advanced than a "sophomore".
Otherwise, it would be "Be Little My General".
The holder of the generals laundry
In the US Army, Major General is the highest permanent peacetime rank, so the Lieutenant General rank that denotes a secondary or assistant position, would outrank the permanent ranks of all active generals.
But whats a brigadier anyways
should change it to sargeant general
BMLG = Be My Little General; that is how I was taught to keep it in order 😊
Sticking to tradition allows this confusion and nonsense to occur. We’ve revamped the rank structure multiple times, we just need to do it again and get rid of stuff that doesn’t make sense and duplicates. We need a unique name for every rank!
Anyone actually of general rank doesnt care about this. One stars are usually ripe to retire anyway.
The Eagle on Colonel looks similar to a certain german eagle☠️
This was before the 1949 Geneva convention that made it a warcrime to kill POWs lol
I guess this battle inspired mont Gomery to plan market garden
Lieutenant is a military that has the necessary aptitudes to be promoted to the next hierarchical level; Lieutenant Colonel is ready to be promoted to (Full) Colonel if there is a "vacant slot" (death or retirement). Lieutenant General already has all the aptitudes needed to be promoted to General.
Also "Lieutenant" alone is usually a Liutenant Captain.
Quite simple? I beg to differ
"Have you ever wondered why...?" No. It was that way because it just was 😂
How are paratroopers, scattered behind enemy lines supposed to take prisoners?
You think that’s confusing?! Remember when in Korea, the U.S. Army experimented with the rank of Corporal Captain in an Officer’s Club?!
For the record, at least in Spain, Captain General is higher than General. It would be similar to Field Marshall, or General of the Army; a five stars general. In the case of Spain the only Captain General is his Highness the King.
Not "Paskevitz" but "Paszkiewicz".
I am not USA citizen but i always wondering why US military have many sergeants ? And why Private dont have insignia rank? And also what difference between privates & specials?
Lieutenant Lieu = Place Tenant = Occupant, or a supervisor. Not so much always a holder of some "thing". Could be more of a place. As for the going of Sergeant Major General...well, my bet is that they removed the Sgt because most officers tend to have a senior NCO advising them; usually titled Sergeant Major. "Where is the the Sergeant Major General's Sergeant Major" could have sounded wacky a bit. That's my theory 🤷🏻♂️
Wonderful explanation!
As a 20 year military veteran, I've always wondered about this. I'm taking your word that this is correct. If so, it makes a lot of sense.
Nobody wondered this.
Not really because it is the same looking at the two Colonel ranks.
I have actually wondered that, so thank you for the explanation.
That's until a Colonel General walks into the room 😁😁
The USAAF 8th Air Force alone, lost more aviators than did the entire US Marine Corps losses in WWII. Hard to believe but very true and factual.
In 90s Poland joined NATO. Americans were really confused about new allie ranks. Poles have 4 stars for captain, 3 for lieutenant, 2 for 2nd lieutanant. Higher officers have also stars, but there is more, not just stars.
In Eastern Europe. There is a rank titled Colonel General. I don't know what it is the equivalent of in the NATO ranks.
I went to a military school in the ninth grade.I had several people argue me down major generals were higher rank than lieutenant general.
why he looks like Clint Eastwood dho
Sorry I asked
This is the same as sous chef and head chef then. I didn’t know-tice(notice) till today.
Also the reason that silver metal seems to outrank gold: They're not gold, they're brass. Literally and figuratively.
To fully explain it, Captain was originally the highest rank in an army. The sergeant was actually the second-in-command with privates making up the rest of the formation. Then it became apparent that the sergeant couldn't handle the command and administrative responsibilities required so the rank of lieutenant was created to take over the command portion of the sergeant's job. Eventually when multiple formations came together to fight a battle they needed to make sure that it was clear which of the company commanders was in overall command so Captain General, lieutenant General and Sergeant Major were created to distinguish which was the senior officer at each rank. Eventually colonel, lieutenant colonel, Major and corporal were created as well as moving sergeant and sergeant Major down from being officer's to NCO's like they are today. Over time the rest of the sergeant's ranks were created as well as brigadier general to give us the rank structure that we see today.
And Major used to be Sergeant Major, and like Major General, Sergeant was dropped. Sergeant was an officer rank below Lieutenant. Later on, Sergeant was downgraded to NCO status, and Sergeant Major reappeared as a senior NCO Sergeant. While the original SgtMaj is still a commissioned officer and shortened to the current rank of Major.
If that's right, that'd be the last piece of puzzle. 🤔
cool video but you have the WORST audio set up ever
Let this former Specialist E4 figure this out.
Is this supposed to be USA ranks?
thank you for this. it is something I've wondered about. but now it makes sense.
Why is silver higher than gold when gold is more valuable?
It is not gold but brass and yes confusing
