LIVEBAITING FOR BASS ON CRAB & PRAWN - UK BASS FISHING - UK SEA FISHING
This episode see's me returning to one of my favourite marks for targeting bass with live bait. Before fishing I gather live prawn, crab and small fish that are abundant in the nearby rockpools, this can be nearly as much fun as hooking a bass! during one of the sessions I am lucky enough to catch the biggest bass I have caught at this mark using live bait under the float on light gear...Great spot for this tactic and great fun!

In this episode of Hook Line Trigger, I venture out on a cold, still evening, seeking squid on the south coast of the UK's, Brighton. Using a simple single squid jig setup, casting repeatedly into the shallow clear water in the pitch dark and retrieving extremely slowly, it turned in to a productive evening catching a doze of the target species. can I ask a serious question: why dont you keep this bass? or do u always catch n release?

    • @hooklinetrigger4576
      @hooklinetrigger4576 16 днів тому

      @@durbanmedia It's a great question, I do take for the pot occasionally but have a strict size limit of 42-45cm, which is essentially the legal minimum size. A bigger fish like this is a breeding fish, as bass increase in size the amount of eggs they produce is huge in comparison to a 1lb weight difference, say fish weighing 4-5lb the 5lb fish will produce a huge amount of eggs more than the 4lb fish, the 1lb extra weight makes a big difference, so you can imagine how many eggs a 8lb+ fish produces. 👍

      @durbanmedia 16 днів тому

      @@hooklinetrigger4576 thanks for explaining that! caught me a flatty this morning(just a lil one). can I ask if that 42-45cm means if it is 46cm u wont keep it, or are u going by weight say if its 4-5lb+ u gonna release it based off breeding( going to a good bass spot tomorrow so its good to know these things.)

    • @hooklinetrigger4576
      @hooklinetrigger4576 16 днів тому

      A 46cm would be fine, it's when they get 3lb plus I put them back, I only take occasionally nowadays tbh, I used to freeze them and also give them to people but now only take one fish occasionally and eat it the night after. An interesting thing worth mentioning is I bleed and brain spike my bass using the Japanese ikejime method, makes a big difference to the taste and is humane as possible method if dispatch, Google it if you haven't heard of it, 💯 worth doing. 👍

      @@simonknox5580 Cheers! Rotten bottom is a good idea, I do use it at times when I know the ground is particularly rough and casting a larger distance, during that session and most of my reef sessions I'm casting in to clear, sandy/chalk bottomed areas that I know at close range, moving to different spots as the tide floods. Tight lines!

    Definitely the type of ground I'd use a pulley rig. Great fish that first Bass, my p.b is a 10 late last year and used 1/0 varivas j hook and a 1/0 sakuma octopus hook as the pennel hook.

      @hooklinetrigger4576 17 днів тому

      Hello mate, when I first started fishing the reef I used a pulley pennel, on that particular ground it resulted in snagging and lost gear, experimenting between myself and two other mates who I fish with we found a basic running ledger much less prone to snagging, the vital thing we found is holding the rod at all times and feeling the lead down on the cast, as soon as the grip lead touches bottom it's held on a tight line and not moved, the lead/circle hook acts almost like a bolt rig, the takes are vicious and tight to the fish immediately. 99% of the time the circle is perfectly in the scissors 👍 we do lose gear, but surprisingly little using this method. 10lb a bass of a lifetime! 😎 Where are you based?

    • @richardjones2811
      @richardjones2811 17 днів тому

      @@hooklinetrigger4576 Hello buddy, I guess it's what you're used to when choosing a rig. I've always used a pulley pennel as it keeps the bait secure during the cast and allows for a further chuck. I fish open beaches 90% of the time and usually when there's an onshore wind so getting distance to reach gulleys can be difficult with some rigs. I was out Sunday evening and had a 4 pounder which made great lunch on Monday 😀. Missed a vicious bite which almost pulled my rod off the rest, more than likely 5+. I know what you mean regarding a running ledger being tight to the fish but having a bait that isn't clipped always make me wonder if the line has wrapped above the lead on impact with the water which doesn't do any wonders for bait presentation or confidence. Don't say that 10 pounder was a fish of a lifetime because I want another this year haha. I live in North Wales.

      @@richardjones2811 Ah, got ya 👍 pulley perfect on open beaches at distance, definitely my choice of rig in those conditions. The exciting part of fishing the reef in the vid is it's really close range fishing, at your feet sometimes, I've had bass erupt out of the water less than a rods distance on the take, very exciting! If you say it's a fish of a lifetime it'll trick the fish gods into letting you have more! 😂 Can't beat those rod out the hand takes, I rarely fish more than one rod, sometimes hound fishing ill use my contis on a rest, bait runner set but can't beat feeling those takes, especially a ripper! I'm from Southport originally, used to go Llandudno often on holiday, some lovely coast there. Akios fury 420 matched with a Surfblaster MK1 7500 is light enough. West shore Llandudno can produce some very nice bass but also eels as it's an estuary. I love that double knock you get first with a Bass, like it's the way they stun the prey then they come back for it. Dirty squid is unwashed squid as it is when caught, it still has the ink/scent. 👍
