Responsive Card Design with Flex containers in Dextrous
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to use a flex container zones to make dynamic card layouts in Dextrous.
This is super helpful for scenarios where you want to conditionally display icons and have them 'snap' to a desired position no matter how many you have.
Another scenario it is great for is for enabling you to have zones (e.g with ability text) that grows or shrinks based on the amount of text it has. Note: Flex containers replace 'auto-grow' zones, so if you had auto-grow on a zone, you'll need to use a flex container instead. It's worth it! :D

Shared image - this is a single image that will be on the back of every card in your deck. 2. Unique images - you can choose a unique image for each individual card. 3. Shared layout - this is like shared image, except that you can edit parts of the layout. Think of it like a...

is there a way to give copies continous numbers, without copying every card add a number?
For this kind of thing I'd highly recommend using Google sheets with dextrous, as this kind of thing becomes super easy
ik heb paar keer geprobeerd om een winkel daar te maken maar is echt moeilijk, hun platform werkt niet klantvriendelijk
Do you mean you've tried to print cards?
I uploaded of my components at once and the game of table top simulator cannot load both faces of my cards (front and back) what do I do to fix this?
Hmm get some screenshots of what you mean and hit me up on the discord and I should be able to get it sorted for you.
i am a bit confused, with the back side in MPC, it says left on the right side and right on the left. i have cards with numbers on them, do those need to be mirrored to come out right? or is it like the right side of it when you look at the front
Hmmm this is a good question actually - I'm not sure sorry. I'd recommend reaching out to mpc and asking to clarify this as it would be annoying to get this wrong in the print
If i had to guess i'd say yes it's the right side when you look at the front
that is also what my conclusion is. thank you
This is real magic! 🎉
Thanks for your kind words!
Hats off, dude! You guys have created something really impressive!
Ha thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Incredible product🎉
Glad your having fun with it!
I love this feature ! Great job !!!
Good to hear!
I want to differ my text. So in the same text zone i want one line that is bold and underlined, but i want the section under it to not be bold and underlined. How to make it different?
Good question. So you can make your own custom text style for that. Checkout the tutorial on the tutorials page on the website. Hit me up in the discord if you can't figure out out 👍
For some reason, uploading the backs keeps failing. Hopefully I can figure it out.
Hit us up on the discord if you can't figure it out 👍
@@DextrousGameDesign It seems like some of the files were corrupted. I redownloaded them, and the set I selected for the first pass was also no good, however the second set was fine (all the card backs were the same, so for this part it doesn't matter if I lose a few). Issue likely comes from it being such a large set in total, with 1,111 items needing to be exported from Dextrous. Fortunately I don't have any other component as large as that. But if files get corrupted on a set where the back matters, or it's the fronts I lose, then I'll have to find another solution, or try exporting again, and hope it works out, I guess. I was looking at ways to convert the pngs into a pdf, but without the same format, I don't know if it'd work. For the rest of this component, I'm going to try using the same pdf file it created, since it's already there. And that should go faster as well, since it doesn't have to re-create it. Service has a limit of 198 cards, so I have to do it a number of times.
Is there a way to specify an absolute size of the icon, so that it does not rescale when more text is added an scaling is enabled?
You mean text shrink? By default text icons are based on the size of their text context - I'm not sure I can think of a situation where you'd want them to stay the same size even if text around it shrinks - that would do weird things to the lineheight - but feel free to hit me up in the discord and convince me otherwise 😊👍
Brilliant! Dextrous just keeps getting better and better. Great work chaps. ❤
Great feature!
Amazing :), great Job!
Glad you like it!
This is amazing. Thanks so much!
You're welcome! Glad you liked it.
Hey so I've been trying to use the flex feature on my cards. I'm new to Dextrous so maybe I'm just missing it but i'm having trouble getting the flex to actually work. I created my layout so that certain cards will have an icon while others wont and it will adjust accordingly. It does what I want when I'm on the edit layout, however over in the project when editing components I can't manage to either add or hide images so that it will adjust. Let me know what I should do, thanks!
Hey mate thanks for reaching out. Without seeing your layout I can't be sure but here are things to check: 1. You have icon zones inside a flex container zone in the layout. 2. For each icon zone you have enabled auto show/hide 3. In the table if you don't have an image (ie tree.png) for a cell the icon zone should hide automatically (assuming it's an image zone - if it's a text zone it will hide if there's no text). If you can't get this working hit me up on the discord and I can help you out 😊
@@DextrousGameDesign I had "show zone by default" enabled. I just switched it to auto show/hide and it works just as I wanted. Thanks a million for the quick response and this amazing tool, I can already tell this is gonna help set up my future playtests. Definitely gonna purchase a subscription to this!
Awesome! Glad to hear it's working 😊👍

SO COOL FEATURE!!! Thanks a lot for your hard work!! <3

Great! Thanks for adding this feature :)

Hi! Nice video, but when i print my cards, they are about 5mm smaller than the set size in the program. In dextorus 7x5cm, but printed 6,5x4,5. Can you help me with this?
Hi there! This is almost always because: 1. Margins are set to default rather than none. 2. Scale is not at 100% or you have shrink to fit page enabled. Check those two out for me and if you have no luck hit me up on the discord and I can investigate further. 😊👍
@@DextrousGameDesign Thank you! The problem has been solved. The margins were not at "none".
Brilliant great to hear 👍
Hi! How can i add another picture instead of text to the background card?
So you just add another image zone to the layout you're using for the backs. (In the layout editor).
WOW! that just amazing solution! Im shocked how ez and fast this fix exactly my problem)
Great to hear!
oh handy that, glad this was added...is this new? I don't recall seeing it just last week I believe. Can you bound a flex zone so it only grows/shrinks to a certain point? i.e. grow ability text zone based on text quantity but no more than half the card's height
It's so new that it is not even out yet lol. It will be in a few hours (this video dropped a touch early by mistake). As for your question - I'm not entirely sure of the use case for this but you could use max-height to make sure it grows only up to a certain point yes. 😊👍
@@DextrousGameDesign Ah good, I was just trying to troubleshoot why I wasn't seeing the flex option 😆 makes sense now
@@v_d-_-b_v It's live now :)
For my game, I'm making player mats that are essentially 4 cards arranged together, one of them cut in half and used on both sides of the central zone. This is so that when it's folded up, the mat can double as a deck box of sorts. Should I add on to the canvas areas to compensate for the Bleed and Safe Zone? The fact we don't add on when making the cards makes me think I shouldn't add on.
Tbh it's hard to say because I'm not exactly clear what you're describing here. If you send me a sketch on the discord of how these components fit together I could give you some better advice. Having said that, here's some things to bear in mind: -If you do bleed like I show in this tutorial - Dextrous already adds on to the canvas area for you - watch closely! :D -Bleed is generally for when you're printing with a printer who is also cutting the cards for you (it's the margin for error essentially that they need). -If these 4 player mats are going to be printed as separate cards by a printer and then cut, you'll almost certainly need bleed. -On the other hand, if you're printing at home for prototyping purposes I'd recommend setting the card up for bleed in the layout editor, but then exporting with no bleed as it means you have to make less cuts (because the cards will share the same edges). -You can always add bleed later if you need it, but just be aware that if you want any background images to be *bigger than the size of cards/player mats* - this is the real mind-bender with bleed that confuses people - you need more art than you think essentially.
Thank you for the great tutorial! Just one question, can we use these variables in the style?
Yep you can 😊 can be a real space-saver
@@DextrousGameDesign Thank you for the response! it's a great feature 🙌
BBBLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!
Thanks for the updated videos. Can you do one on how to deal with blanks in a CSV? I always get 'ghost data' from other records when I have a blank that should be blank.
Hmm not entirely sure what you mean sorry. Have you checked your csv link is only for the one tab in Google sheets? It also takes Google a few minutes to update the csv with new data so it's possible you're just pulling it in a touch too early? Hit me up on the discord if neither of these fixes it for ya. 😊👍
This is amazing! Now, is there a way to add your own lind of custom icon?
Yeah absolutely, you can just drag images from your desktop into the image folder to upload, and then insert them inline like I showed in the vid.
Yep of course. You can drag images from your desktop into the image folder to upload, then use them inline like I showed in the vid. 😊👍
@@DextrousGameDesign man how is it so easy...? 😅
Can we change the variable icon position the same way you did in the "in text icon" video ? By using number after the .png
What you would do is get the icon size/alignment perfect and then copy the whole thing (including size info) to a variable so you don't need to do the size stuff everywhere.
@@DextrousGameDesign Ill try this thx !
You save my life with this ! I was struggling to do exactly this ! Thanks again for your amazing work
Huzzah!
This update/ information makes Dextrous SOOOO helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
That's awesome. The little things add up
What an amazing tool!
Thank you for the clear and concise tutorials! Learned everything I know to do from your videos. Still a few things to learn I'm sure but love the site and your guides. Cheers!
Great to hear! I'll try to do some more soon
I'm in the process of using Google Sheets to put my cards from Canva into Dextrous, and I've run into a couple issues: 1. Google Sheets doesn't seem to be able to parse URLs with // in them, so I can't seem to use Imgur or similar for the pictures I'm using. For now, I've removed the Pictures column. I also occasionally want to use a text box or icon for singular cards in a template. Should I create different templates for that? Thanks.
Hey there! 1. Yep urls don't work, instead you need to upload images to Dextrous - watch the first few tutorials if you need guidance on this. 2. If you're talking about just adding/removing a zone on some cards you can just turn on auto show/hide for that zone - then if it doesn't have any data in its cell (ie for card rows 4 and 6 for example) it will automatically hide itself. If you need other style stuff beyond showing and hiding see the tutorial on unique styles for cards.
heyy so I've recently tried Dextrous and am loving how easy it is and I've watched a bunch of tutorials to get me started. The issue I ran into was that I can't find an option to curve the text, is that an option that exists yet? For example, I'm making cards and would like for the name of the card to be on an open curved scroll but can't find an option to curve the text with the image of the scroll so it just sits there with straight text which doesn't look too immersive. Thanks in advance! :)
Great question! Curved text isn't a thing yet as of oct 2024 sorry, but it's on the list so we will eventually implement it 😊👍
Who starts a tutorial in the middle?
Not entirely sure what you mean sorry! :P
@@DextrousGameDesign You started by saying "Over here I have a project, I've got some cards that have been optimized for bleed". Do you really think that is the beginning? So I want to follow a tutorial, so it stands to reason that if you don't explain what we're looking at, or how you got to this point, I have to go elsewhere to find out how get to the place this tutorial starts. Now you should be entirely sure what I mean.
I hope this continues to get support! I will definitely support it. It's such a great tool.
Thankyou!
I'm going to be real, I have absolutely no idea wtf i'm doing in dextrous
Let us know what you're struggling with and we can help! 😊
@@DextrousGameDesign I got it solved, Thank you <3
Is there a way to control these things (like text color) directly from the .csv? If I update my CSV, adding rows for example, it shifts all my formatting accordingly
i guess for text i can create a text style, but for objects (icons, borders) i'm not sure how to reference an RGB value or the like
Hey there Justin. I'm not entirely sure what you mean here sorry. Your style column should be in your Google sheet of that makes sense? Then when you add rows they'll always be with the same card... Am i understanding you correctly?
@@DextrousGameDesign AHHH, i'm still working of an uploaded CSV. so either i need to migrate to google sheet OR i can add a column with the proper style naming? that would be very handy. Thank you! I guess i assumed the style column only existed in dextrous itself.
Hey I'm trying to nest Text Style inside each other and getting some weird results. For example I want the first sentence of every card to be a bigger font and I want one of those words in that sentence to be Yellow, but it causes the text to separate into 2 columns. Is this something I'm supposed to be able to do?
You should be able to change the container settings of the parent text style here to "inline block" then it should work. Hit me up on the discord if you're having trouble.
Can we play this game that you are editing in this video? Or others that you where editing in other tutorials. They looks so awesome. The have very nice images and card effects. Seems like you and your team have a very great sense of fantasy settings. I love Dextrous

This one should be resolved. It was a temporary glitch.
@@DextrousGameDesign Thanks guys! I’ve actually joined your discord and asked that question as well and you guys have been amazing thank you very much !
Hey, just a general question, but is it possible to have an editable column in Dextrous that, when imported into TTS, acts as the "description" of an object? Something similar to how "Card Nickname" automatically fills in the "Name" part of an object. Thank you!
Yep in the component settings menu you can activate a description column for exactly this
Hey this is sooo cool, I was wandering if someone could help me to do this on Mac
Should work on mac. Join the discord and we can sort you out 😊👍
This is just what I've been searching for. Thanks a lot ✨
You're welcome 😊
My question is about the numbers and colored circles in the top left. How to you get the different colored circles to be in different locations based if the card has that specific color?
Those coloured circles are actually images. So it's just 3 image zones in positions 1, 2, 3, and then I select which image I want to show at each zone on a card by card basis. If that doesn't make sense, watch the first few tutorials then it should make more sense.
@@DextrousGameDesign Oh! They are images! That makes sense. The thanks!
Would this work for doing custom player cards for Zombicide? I've made a LOT of customs for Marvel Zombies and I can't print them the way I want where I am at, so being able to print them through this would be a Godsend for me. I am just worried it wouldn't be accepted because of copyright issues.
I'm not a lawyer and it'd be worth reaching out to Marvel, but afail it's likely ok to just print cards for your personal use. It's usually selling stuff with other's IP that is the big no no.
Oh wait i see, you're wondering if mpc would print the cards - definitely send them an email to double check - they might have a policy against it yep
Sorry I'm on my phone so i assumed you meant just printing at home
hey, i think it must have changed bc when i pasted the json code in, it just went red with a x at the bottom... is the tutorial outdated or am i doing something wrong? edit: it also says "should not have additional property 5"
Hey mate. This usually happens if you're uploading backs for Screentop as well but it's not quite setup right. If you untick 'backs' on the Dex export page when exporting to Screentop page you should be ok. Otherwise if you do want cards with backs you need to make sure you'll need to make sure to upload the back asset (same name as fronts but with the '_back' at the end), for example: component name_back Check out the written tutorial guide here: www.dextrous.com.au/Tutorials/#exporting-to-screentop I have also responded in the Discord, so hit me up there when you're ready etc. :)
