A Comparative Study of Spin Technique in Shot Put and Discus Part 2
Переглядів 1,2 тис.5 місяців тому
Normally I would post these over weeks and analyze each to death. Instead, just as last time in Part 1, this is compilation to show the similarities between throws in both shot put and discus. Last time I showed throwers who use a longer right foot pick up and twist the feet together out of the back. Here is shown what would be called an early right foot pick style. One where the right foot lea...
Cory Martin 22.10m Shot Put Tucson 2010 2 Views
Переглядів 1826 місяців тому
Two views provided by William Conwell (front view) and someone else(rear view)... I don’t know This throw ranks Cory in the #32 throw of all time. At the time it would have placed him at #14. That means 18 men have surpassed this in the least 14 years which is pretty crazy! He would only surpass the 70 foot barrier one more time a week later. He has pretty wide stance and only twists his should...
A Comparative Study of Spin Technique in Shotput and Discus PART 1
Переглядів 1,9 тис.6 місяців тому
Normally I would post many of these videos separately in dozens of posts over months. However I find this concept to be important enough to be compilation of film. It has been a common belief among throwers and their coaches that shot put and discus spins are some how different. I disagree. Their are of course some differences. -The shot has no radius like the discus, no orbit. -The circle is m...
Norbert Thiede Discus Throw 63.94m 1976
Переглядів 2596 місяців тому
Thiede was a discus thrower for East Germany in the mid 70s. He would represent the GDR in the 1976 Olympics placing 4th. He would only compete one more year in 1977. His PR is 66.90m. He starts by winding all the way to the left with most of his weight on his right foot. You can actually see his left foot pick up and then get placed where he wants it. He stretches both arms out long, creating ...
Brian Oldfield Shot Put 1980 Big Guy Mountain Games
Переглядів 1936 місяців тому
Been a while since I posted a video of Brian. This was at a time when he was suing to be allowed to compete at the Olympics. He eventually won and subsequently Jimmy Carter boycotted the 1980 Olympics. Brian would not be allowed to compete at the Olympic Trials again till 1988! Truly every Olympian nowadays owes Brian a thank you for having the guts to be paid openly when it was ‘banned’. Even ...
Wolfgang Schmidt 1976 Discus Practice 2 Angles
Переглядів 4526 місяців тому
This was in my opinion his best year technique wise. The footage is little hard too see but it’s so rare to see his throw from behind the circle I wanted to share it. He winds up bending way over at the hips. This seems to help him, when he initiates the throw, to keep his shoulders over his knees through the first turn which keeps him in balance. His wind is maximum taking the discus far back ...
Augie Wolf vs Carol Cady 1984 Olympics Shotput Technical Comparison
Переглядів 3066 місяців тому
19.74m vs 17.22m Both of these athletes were very good discus throwers as well as shot putters who spun. This is reflected in their style which I would call a “linear technique” much like the discus style. It is characterized by their twisting of the feet together in back spreading the knees apart and leaving the right foot down long. The left arm is outstretched yet the shoulders maintain the ...
John Godina 2004 Olympic Trials 21.08m 69ft 1.75in 🥉
Переглядів 1407 місяців тому
Winslow Sightler sent me this video of John I had not seen before so I figured I’d share it. This is from the prime years of John’s technique from 2004-2005. John’s technical style is what I refer to as the Silvester style. I like how he keeps the shot pressed into the side of his neck with the elbow pointed straight out. This keeps his chest bigger and allows him to get more of a pull on the s...
Wind Aided Training Update: Road to 2028 Olympics
Переглядів 4517 місяців тому
Threw a season record for myself in practice for the shot put. Wind was blowing so I don’t know if I’ll count it. On a more serious note, I have been working on my first turn out of the back. I’ve managed to move my left foot 95% through the 9 o’clock drop. This means I’m no longer straight legged and able to drop the left knee down low. This throwing practice was Saturday and I added the targe...
Wolfgang Schmidt Discus Throw 66.06m 1976
Переглядів 5517 місяців тому
I think perhaps Wolfgang’s technique was best in the 70s. He seems much more dynamic. He starts his throw off with relaxed wind, twisting back, stretching the arms and setting the X. He is bent in the knees and hips. His left foot turns all the way right. He starts the first turn by twisting the left foot around on the inside of the big toe and picking up the right leg early. From the side you ...
Mykolas Alekna Discus Throw World Record Analysis 74.35m
Переглядів 4,2 тис.7 місяців тому
I think it’s fair to say I’ve made a lot of comparison videos with Mykolas and others. Today we look at the best throw in 38 years from two angles provided by @ThrowsUniversity He starts by winding up with a twist to the left. His left foot turns all the way right and his weight shifts mostly to his right foot. His knees and hips just are just unlocked. His arms stretch out and appear very rela...
Yaime Perez 73.09m A Comparative Analysis
Переглядів 9157 місяців тому
It seems a lot of people don’t understand how or why Yaime can throw so far with her “unorthodox” technique. Plenty of comments under posts of her throws calling it sloppy or bad. The reality is that she just uses a style that isn’t commonplace anymore. The Linear Style. The feet twist/turn together out of the back. The right leg turns in and sweeps with the top of the thigh. The motion through...
Wolfgang Schmidt Shotput 1973 18.54m
Переглядів 6917 місяців тому
Wolfgang was not only a tremendous discus thrower but a very good glide shot putter as well. He threw 19.19m in the same series to set the European Junior Record. He starts off by leaning over his right foot, bringing up his left leg, and rising onto his toes of his right. He then brings the left leg down and close to his right leg as he crouched down. Curiously he points his left toe up this w...
Wolfgang Schmidt 1974 Foul
Переглядів 2547 місяців тому
According to Gerlof Holkema, who posted the raw footage, Wolfgang broke a bone in the middle of his foot on this throw and had to take 2 weeks off. Coincidentally he would land funky on his right foot 6 years later exactly the same way but sprained his ankle which cost him an Olympic medal. He starts off the throw with his down and up wind. This stretches the arms out as he sets up the X. He be...

Where do you throw for discus? I find myself struggling to find a place to throw
at a local highschool
@@TheGudeGym I struggle with that because all the local highschools in my town are closed fields so I have to jump over a wall through a sketchy looking alley to practice
@@reymundorodriguezg then that’s what you have to do
@@TheGudeGym you’re right
Is this dragon soul lol
Yep
@@TheGudeGym that is so unironically cool lol gonna do my turns to this now
This is great
It's crazy that the world record now exceeds this throw by 2 feet.
I remember Brian from the series The Superstars when he easily won the overhead press.
What was the wind speed? Seems like a Flo-Jo world record to me. I wonder if Ceh and Stahl had competed that day what distances would have been thrown... If we don't measure throws against the wind speed, doesn't it become storm chasers? Regardless, I am happy at least that we have a 74m + throw filmed with a camera and not a toaster.
Wind is utterly irrelevant and has been chased since the inception of discus throwing. Getting a wind to aid you does not detract from performance. It s a skill in itself. Hence why many throwers did NOT throw PRs at the same meet.
(Sorry, my comments keep disappearing and I dont know why). Nice video and amazing technique and all. I do genuinely have to disagree on impact of wind here, and would love to hear your thoughts. My research finds evidence that discus creates an airfoil and generates lift, which is augmented my head winds. You can see difference in the flight path compared to shot put or hammer. And there were many other PRs thrown at same event, including Yaime Peres 73.09m.
@@quintinvanrooyen2599 Yes it’s an air foil and designed to be that way. As far as headwind goes the only other 74m throw was thrown in a tail wind. There is no definitive benefit to throwing in wind. Most people can’t handle it and lack the skill to adjust to the wind. Even at the top.
Fair enough, so adjusting your attack angle and release point based on the wind on the day? Now that would truly be an extraordinary skill.
@@quintinvanrooyen2599 it is a somewhat lost skill today. The generation of the 80s and earlier had more control in accounting for wind. Very difficult.
Wow thanks for posting pre glide Obrien! And didn't know he was the first to go off the fingers! Things we take for granted.
👍
Do you think Denny can win the Olympics?
@@joethrows9427 yep, it’s possible for Denny, Mykolas, Ceh, and Stahl to all take the gold. It’ll be interesting to watch
Thanks for the update. Love your dedication and continued content for us old, busted throwers & coaches!
💛
Excited for the upcoming videos!
Awesome training video!
Thanks Trav great work! Presses were im-press-ive seriously I wasn't expecting so many reps and like the old style Oly Press! Can't wait for your squat outline!

multi mac ...legend!
I can cross my eyes and it perfectly aligns until the reverse 🤯🤯🤯
Could you explain your sentence: "using the center of the body as a fulcrum vs the left side as John does. This allows John to lengthen his pull and make up for shorter leverages" ?
@@martmuru I’m referring to a class 1 lever system. The pivot point(fulcrum) can either be the spine or the left side of the body. This changes the output lever by lengthening the distance between the fulcrum and the discus.
@@TheGudeGym How does one learn and practice it? Do you offer consulting service?
@@martmuru learn by doing, doing a lot, studying the throw, feeling the throw. I do online and in person throws coaching too, links in description.
He threw 71.26m with no wide right leg sweep. He basically stepped straight into the middle. Do you think wide right leg is overemphasized by coaches? I am the same height as he was and I'm also fast. I find it hard to be long and wide in the circle.
@@martmuru I would agree it’s over emphasized. A wide right leg can be an advantage but it depends on the person. I tried to throw like John but I’m the opposite of him and found a wide leg better for me.

Thanks Travis, this is awesome I have not seen this throw before! Cory was a seriously talented dude with a 75 m hammer PR as well love the analysis of his very likeable technique!!

It looks so easy and light
Why don’t they make those kind of throwing shoes anymore?
🧡
I still wonder what would become his results in the shot put with all that energi and speed..?..unfortunately he was forced to change to discus due to a broken hand injury. This guy trained hard like no one, and his body payed the price ( lots of pain = pain killers = premature death)....so sad !
Do you know what his standing throw record was?
No I don't
Miss the speed of that right knee screw instead of the usual foot drag.
Amazing!

I think Tony showed us as John Powell did that there is more than one way to achieve greatness.
