Albany & Eastern's SP 5399 pulling a load of logs
The Albany & Eastern Railroad owns and operates a 1955 EMD SD9 on their excursion trains. On rare occasions it is used to pull freight, like we see here. SP 5399 is seen pulling 18 loaded log cars from Griggs to Lebanon for placement in the hauler train the following day. She really puts on a show pulling westbound out of Griggs.

It is not a ghost town never has been people have lived there since day one. The school was built in 1930 as the old school burned down over Christmas vacation 1929, I went to the school that is there now. If it wasn't for the sawmill I never would have been born that is called a chain of events every one that is alive today you are here because of a chain of event in/of the past including slavery of both the black and white slaves brought here. Wicked Hybrid K5LA on that NPCU!! Sounds exactly like an Acela!!! Nice meet!
If her firebox was modified to work with oil, I would love to see her run like this again. We already have a T-1 in original condition and working order so why not have something unique for a change? If all of the kinks like the tight bearings and again, the firebox were fixed, this locomotive wouldn't be so bad! I am sick of people always going for Thomas Payne's throat for doing what he did. Yes, it ruined its heritage, but it didn't ruin who she was.
I knew Tom Payne and visited him many times at his home and he didn't install the oil conversion some Canadian company did one of the main reasons why 2100 had to stop was the oil burner over heated the bottom of the front side of the firebox and his biggest investor Charles allard stopped funding the gprr
😮😮😮😮
Jeez that is one anemic sounding whistle. Can anyone tell me what aspects of the T-1 series made her a poor oil burner?
The Reading was an anthracite road, therefore all its engines burned the stuff. To burn anthracite coal, an engine needs to be fitted with a Wootten firebox. Not only was this type of firebox designed to burn strictly anthracite, but the oil conversion Thomas Payne did was half-assed, to say the least. It was done with a few pieces of sheet metal, nothing more. One over the fire grates, another over the firebox door (which from what I’ve heard, occasionally glowed due to the heat) and another two on the top and bottom of the coal bunker. All of this led to 2100 steaming poorly and this made the whistle sound absolutely awful.
These videos were taken on different days and then edited together
Jesus Christmas she sounds god-awful here. I've never been a fuel purist and I'm fine with a locomotive being dolled-up or repainted into a non-historical livery, but they fucking butchered her.
Reading 2100 almost looks sad and miserable just like Henry the Green Engine before his rebuild; weak and underperforming.😢
This whistle is kick ass
Hell yeah
Hello Jason Hill and all viewers. I'm Matt Glumac and I was that crazy kid. Yes, I admit that I got a little too excited upon seeing 4449. I mean it was a lifelong dream finally come true to see the Daylight. I am on the autism spectrum and I wasn't as mature then as I am now. I still have troubles, but I learn a little bit more year after year. I know it's been 13 years, but I'm greatly sorry to you for ruining your shot. Jason, my dad did record the entire run-by. It's on a late 1980s VHS camera, but I will gladly give a copy to you to use if I get it on a USB.
Hey Matt! No, you didn't ruin my shot. We just found it a bit amusing that someone was so excited about seeing the 4449, so I decided to post this video. It's really cool your dad brought you out to see it steam by.
You should upload thst clip your dad filmed to youtube!
I will upload it if I can get the footage on my pc without losing any quality. We also filmed Western Maryland 734 on Helmstetter's Curve later that trip.
@@mattglumactheautisticgolfe1608 the 734 is a neat engine. I hope they complete the 1472 inspection on it so it can run again.
Nooo why did they convert it to oil!! 😭
Cost of buying storing and loading Coal. Although Tom could have set her up differently in the firebox
When was this video taken? Where is that locomotive now? Is it still running?
I like the looks of the locomotive just beautiful
I regret of putting this comment because when I learned that during this time it had horrible career and it does not look good to me anymore
THAT IS so AMAZING!! as well as the locomotive
Hey. Can I please use some of your footage in my films? I will credit you for it.
Is it okay if I can post a clip of your video on TikTok? I’ll give you credit.
It was POSITIVELY CRIMINAL what that did to this poor, beautiful locomotive! This is so hard to watch 😢

That whistle sounds like it's in pain
Sounds like a good one
Sounds similar to an N&W Hooter..
Where is this locomotive now?
That poor engine
I was standing on the ground at the end of this runby at the passing track at Milburn. Now, I volunteer there as a brakeman, but have yet to run with 15 which is in for a LOT of work. Such a great day here...
Fun fact, those bilevels are former CNW. You can tell by the gong bell on the cab car and the paint scheme the red stripes along the length of the cars (formerly orange and brown) from when they were owned by RTA (which formed and later became Metra), which took over commuter service from the CNW. The F40 is former Amtrak f40PHR 319 which was built using some parts from sdp40f. she was eventually sold by FLNX and returned to service in Canada on Agence métropolitaine de transport (renumbered back to 319) and later in New York on the Saratoga and North Creek. After 2017, she wound up at Larry’s truck and electric. Her current status is unknown.
Why would convert a T-1 to burn oil? It would sound horrible!
4:41 now that sounds much better
It sounds awful to me…
