Hello Tonelab your tutorial are priceless, I have ordered a Rossum SP1200... Do you know if EMXP works with the Rossum ?
Thanks very much 🙏🏻 ..haven't tried it myself, but I've read about people using EMXP with SP12's.. so, I presume so! 👍🏼
@@tonelabqtcan you tell me what’s inside the rossum sp1200 sd card ? Is there « kits » ?
Yes. The default kits. Alternatively, you can also find some Kits of vintage Drum Machines from my collection here 🙏🏻 store.tonelab.au/en-aud/collections/sp1200
i already bought two of them, the 909 and her little sister the 707. Now i am waiting for the SP to be shipped. Rossum website indicate late december, then i have to pay for the international taxe… but in the end, and with your help, i’ll reach my most dreamed musical instrument.
@@jeanmicheljarret6097 Fantastic.. you'll have lots of good times with it. Be sure to post some of your beats in the SP1200 forums on facebook 🙏🏻
The filter is so sweeeeet. You can get some of the control back on the sample velocity loudness by going to the midi menu 04 and change loudness to ON - then you can control the loudness of it with CC7 from a sequencer of your choice.
Once yu have your loop hit parameter key it will show yu the b.p.m.
Sure.. but it's not all that accurate.
Food for thought if it’s for you. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to use the combined 26 outputs of my 3000 (10 outs) My old 950 (8 outs) And my ASR 10 (8 outs?) My main interface has 8 in’s I also have an old DP88 with 8 in’s. Plus an old partially obsolete Safire pro 40 that was collecting dust. Another 8 ins. “But how do you hook them all up?” Main interface has two sets of optical I/O Take optical out from the DP and the Safire and go into the two inputs. Then go SPDIF OUT to computer from main interface. Fun Fun Fun! Never throw away old interfaces. You can get saffires for $150 bucks.
I can't remember if the DP88 has 2 independent ADAT inputs or whether they combined to cater towards/allow 96kHz. But, if you 'flash' the 'state' of the Saffire settings to act as a 'stand alone', then you could use that as an ADAT-adc to feed one of the DP88's ADAT inputs. Then, with the DP88 configured 'neatly', you might be able to capture 16 (2x ADAT streams) into the DP88 + it's own 8 as analogue for a grand total of 24. Then your computer could capture all 24 separate tracks rather than the summed 2-stereo S/PDIF 'out'. 👌🏼
Can you do a tutorial on directories please?
I cover Directories in the intro tutorial. Try this it's queued up the chapter 🙏🏻 ua-cam.com/video/hZ8VPWOY7tc/v-deo.html
Suce my stupidity. This has me confused. So are you sampling a sound that say took 1 second of RAM. Then making a copy of that sound so it doesnt take up another second of RAM. IE two identical samples for 1 second of RAM?
Kinda yes.. but by default the 'Copy' feature will create a 'linked duplicate' to the original (of the copy). So this clip demonstrates how to get around that so you can 'edit' a copy 👍🏼
@@tonelabqt hi thanks. So you basically have two samples for the ram price of one that you can edit separately? Ie different decays and volumes and such?
ahh no.. you can have 2 for the price of 1.. but, if you wanna edit your '2nd', you have to run this trick 🙏🏻
@@tonelabqt Ah right. I thought that was too easy. Mind Im certain that an Akai I owned decades ago could copy to a unique self contained copy. Something like an S1000 perhaps. Was a superb feature. Unless I dreamed it all
Sure.. the majority of Samplers didn't have this 'caveat' and some, like the ASR-10, allow for 'both'.. as in create 'physical' copies.. or duplicate 'by reference' to an original Sample 👍🏼

🙏🏻
Thanks for the fantastic video tutorial-it was clear, concise, and super helpful! Would it be safe to assume that the process for connecting the Rossum SP-1200 reissue to a Akai S-950 would be the same?
Thanks very much 🙏🏻 ..in answer to your question.. "It's exactly the same for the Rossum" 🫡
🖤
Do you have links to SCSI Hard Disk options?
Yep, this is a great option for an ASR.. samplerzone.com/collections/zuluscsi/products/zuluscsi-v11
Just purchased the Akai 4000 version of it so I can use the Wav files. Nice sounds!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Please can you make a Bitwig version? It’s very useful friendly for ableton users! Thank you so much for all your work 👏👏
Ableton!!! It has saved me so many times lately with time stretching old material to fit a click!
Yep, I use it for the same reason 👌🏼
Can I load sounds from the mpc x to the sd card that came with the 1200
Nup 👍🏼
So basiclly when you make a track and you have the 8 outs you better always set the sound levels (mix)direct in the INDIV tab? Otherwise if you do this in the stereo tab and you want to track out, you have to "copy" it all from STEREO to INDIV and when you track it out then all stereo needs to be down except i you use 9 and 10 with a stereo sample? Guess a template with all channels set and done would be the best?
Correct. Although, a 'Template'.. while good in theory.. probably won't work too well for various changes in Sample levels... unless, that is, you use the same Samples each time 👍🏼
@@tonelabqt i would say sample chops in bank A those over the stereo out channel and bank B for drums and bass. I always place my kick, ghost kick, snare, hh, ect on the same pads so those would like be "locked in" on the same outs. I will try this out 🙂 But the stereo out "hack" you explained for extra 9 and 10 are a very nice and usefull!!
Will that work for an original EPS?
Unfortunately, no. 🙏🏻
Are these on sd card
"These" ?! 🤔 not sure what you mean. But, you can find sounds for the SP via the link below.. and put them on the SD card using any Mac / Windows computer. PS. They come with instructions too 🙏🏻 tonelab.merchi.co/products/?category_id=264
Is there a sound library on sd card for the 1200 The that comes with the 1200, is that the only card I can use with the 1200
No. Check out the Disk section in the full tutorial for more about it 🙏🏻 ua-cam.com/video/fJllMiVqL3U/v-deo.htmlsi=ycjjHK1gKkZ94Jsz
Thanks for this. Excited to try it out.
🙏🏻👌🏻
Dope I didn’t know this. I just add a sequence to the song mode and it saves the tempo when I reload
I have my sounds on each pad. i go into the mixer section and i get zero change in volume. is there something that i am missing that i need to switch on ?
Depends which Outputs you're using.. Check your Stereo Mixer and the Individual Output Mixer 👍🏼
I have an MPC 5000. I just invested (then returned it) a Focusrite 18i8 (8 input) soundcard which was an upgrade to use the 8 individual outputs on MPC. I noticed when I route each sound in “mixer” mode, the levels drop drastically almost to a point I can’t hear them. Even the bass completely disappears. I got frustrated and returned the stuff I bought thinking this isn’t gonna work right. Is this a common case when routing your sounds to mono outputs? Such as snare, kick, hats, bass? And also I leave the sample on “L/R” in the outputs to keep the stereo sound of it. When I tried tracking it was picking up the other sounds on the stereo channel. It was a mess all around trying to figure this out. Any suggestions? I know the 5000 is a different machine than the classic vintage XL. But maybe you have some general insight?
The Main Output has a different signal path to the 8 individual output board, and.. it also 'sums' 8 channels into a pair. So, effectively it's 'combining' 8 channels, which is likely reducing the dynamic range.. and that could be what you're hearing. But, check your XL Mixer's 'Set Up' page to see if adjusting the output level helps. If you're not sure how to do that check this tutorial for that 👍🏼 ua-cam.com/video/ZdI27rV0OJk/v-deo.htmlsi=208V8rDOiDlKrJCG
@@tonelabqt Gratitude on your response. Thank you much! So the MPC in use is the 5000. The Mixer setup is slightly different than the 2KXL. There isn’t a separate tab for stereo and indiv. outs on the 5000. Everything is assigned via stereo “L/R” or 12, 34, 56, 78, or 1-8 mono on the same mixer screen labeled “Program Mix”. So it sounds like if I want to use “L/R” stereo outs as 9/10 it would have to be isolated but unfortunately everything assigned is in one screen so therefore it seems like my L/R stereo outs will still pick up the 1-8 assigned tracks which it did unfortunately. As far as the db output volume I will double check that in “Setup” and see if there is an option to boost the indiv. 8 outs volume. Thank you for that reminder as well! Also, if lets say Pad A01 is a stereo sample chop and I assign it to 1/2 output, does it automatically make output 1 and 2 left and right? Or do I have to assign that same sample on pad A01 to another pad, assign 1/2 again to that and pan A01 far right and the other copied sample to the other pad hard left? That is where I am getting so confused reading in these forums everywhere. Sorry if I sound like I’m asking too much lol. Hopefully I broke my questions down simply as possible. Thanks in advance again
IN the event you have a Stereo Sample, which you allocate to say, for example.. 1&2 (A stereo sample will only ever 'Pair' across 2 channels).. regardless of other samples, that may be 'Mono', also assigned to 1 or 2, or any other output for that matter.. you'll still be able to assign a Stereo Sample to any pair. The fact that a Stereo Sample accommodates an output-pair, does not mean a Mono Sample will 'not' be able to be applied to either Left or Right of that Pair. You just have to keep your Mono Samples 'out' of that pair.. otherwise those Mono Samples will appear either hard Left or hard Right.. depending on, whether or not, you have your Mixer 'Panning' those Stereo pairs hard left or right. 🙏🏻
@@tonelabqt Thank you for clearing this up! Appreciate you
@@tonelabqt My final question would be, how can I use the stereo outputs “L/R” as 9 & 10 without assigned outputs 1-8 bleeding into it? I know the 2000XL has a separate stereo tab in the “mixer” options. However, the MPC 5000 has all assignable outputs options all in one screen. So you select every channel as “L/R” or 12,34,56,78 or 1-8. I’m guessing there isn’t an option on the 5K to use stereo outs as 9 & 10 without other assigned 1-8 bleeding into the recording of “L/R”
Can you copy a sample to a new pad and delete the original? I swear it's how I used to do it to just move samples, but can't check atm.
You can copy sounds.. but you can't edit the copy as the copy refers to the original, however, in saying that.. if you delete the original.. the 'copy' then becomes 'editable' as it's no longer a 'copy' 👍🏼
@@tonelabqt Thought so! yeah, when you load up your samples and want to make space, this is what i'd do. Tried it tonight and it worked.
Whoever came up with the idea, and I’m guessing it was Marley Marl or Paul C, was a genius
just need a tr909!
👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Is it possible to delete files and folders? If so, what’s the best way to do it? On the Rossum or on the computer? Thank you for the great videos. SO helpful!
Thanks very much 🙏🏻 ..if you have a computer, it is a lot easier to manage Files and Folders. As a rule, I always keep Files and Folder names 'short'.. and without using any 'spaces' or 'characters' that the SP may not be capable of displaying 👍🏼
@@tonelabqt Thank you so much! Ever changed file names on the computer? And then tried to load the renamed files? Scared to try. LOL.
@@asiwas Yep, I renamed all the Kits on my store, prior to listing them.. didn't have any issues 👍🏼
naw you killed that
Can I save a sound on its own? How do I create an already existing image file in my directory?
Q1. If you have 1 sound in the SP memory, you can save that on it's own. Q2. Use the Disk Module option #0 - watch this clip for more ua-cam.com/video/fJllMiVqL3U/v-deo.htmlsi=Z23fcnHdolB4z7Av&t=1645 🙏🏻
I’ll try and remember to always hit 0 and create a folder/ file when I start each session.thanks
Hi, I m wondering, can you use the Rossum SD card and load these sounds into the Akai MPC x (SE)?
Nnnnnn.. well, technically.. with the right Windows OS, and some old software, you could 'rip' the samples from 'SP1200 disk images' as WAVs. Then, you could load those WAVs into an MPC. So, it is possible.. if you have the right stuff👍🏼
@@tonelabqt ok, thank you. So it’s not possible to insert the disk into the MPC x se directly, that would be a dream. Workflow is great on the MPC x se,
No, but.. I created an XPM (MPC Program) for the SP1200. Each MPC Bank & Pad number.. relates to the 'same' Bank & Pad number on the SP1200. MIDI cable 'Out' of the MPC.. into your SP1200. Select a MIDI Track, on your MPC.. assign MIDI Channel 1 and away you go! 👌🏼 Download it here FREE 🙏🏻 www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/2yox49of1hotm8bzydsz9/SP1200-TL-MIDI.xpm?rlkey=hzl7ulwpj1ac1xyre1c1ki3qa&st=xmir55mi&dl=0
Does this work for the Ensoniq EPS classic
The 'concept' will. But, I'm unsure of the EPS Classic's Sample Rate... so, what you can do is.. use the S900 / S950 calculator.. and manually key in your Sample Rate. Here's the link to it here 👍🏼 tonelab.tv/bpm2vrsc.html
Best sampler ever made.
Oh snap! i just found out what is the sound before "Mental Stamina" by Jeru, thank you sir. ua-cam.com/video/nVmDe6fDQ9k/v-deo.htmlsi=09nCbbq02_nfsQYz
thankyou
Hi, do you know how to transfer hfe files to the rossum? I have a og sp1200 with sd card reader and looking to transfer my projects to the rossum. Thanks
The Rossum can load HFE's 🙏🏻
Yes I’ve read that it can. But when I put my sd card inside it from my og it says no card inserted?
Then it's possible your SD card is an unreadible 'format'. Transfer your HFE files to another SD card, formatted as FAT32 🙏🏻
nice video, did exacly as you did.. but do you have any issues when tracking same value notes? laying chords or melodies with same value notes (like a C3, E3, G3) causes them to cut off despite them being on their own respected Midi channel. Running off ableton with an mpc live 2.
No, but I do remember that bug with 1 specific OS.. unfortunately I can't remember what it was... if I had to guess 2.14 perhaps?! ..so, either downgrade to the previous version, or go up.. that is.. if your Computer OS is compatible with it. Check out this page to check out whether or not your OS supports those versions 🙏🏻 support.akaipro.com/en/support/solutions/69000431967
@@tonelabqt 2.14 is the current mpc firmware, I should downgrade then? I'm also on windows 11 if that matters thanks!
Yeah, I can't remember.. maybe 2.10.4.. I ended up downgrading. So, if you can't go forward go back a version 👍🏼
Is there a way to do this if you only have your floppies from the old SP and not the machine itself?
Yeah, if you have the 3.5" Disks.. you could source a Windows PC, with 3.5" Disk Drive.. and use OmniFlop to convert your SP Disks to Image Files. The Rossum can load image files of that nature 🙏🏻
@@tonelabqt Thanks so much for taking the time, I really appreciate it. Would LOVE to see you do a tutorial on it. I can't be the only one in the same sort of quandary. Also, just to confirm, this operation can't be done on a Mac? Thanks again for your help!!!
If you can find OmniFlop for Mac, then I'm sure it could.. but, from what I understand.. OmniFlop is a Windows based app 🙏🏻
Just to let you know that drop box link works but the safari test kit files does nothing, I loaded it on to my Mpc one and it did nothing also on to Mpc beats 2 and the same thing nothing there sorry to say ,will be trying you calculator at some point to see if that works
"the safari test kit files does nothing" ?! ...in what sense?! ..did you select it via Programs?! ...it's worked for many others, so I'm unsure what 'does nothing' means. Can you see the Waveforms if you try to edit the Program.. via Prog Edit?! The calculator has worked for many, so I expect you should have no problem there 🙏🏻
@@tonelabqt no wav it was totally blank sir very strange
What MPC One O.S. version are you using?!
@@tonelabqt the newest one just updated a few days ago maybe i'm doing something wrong?
Hard to see from where I'm sitting.. but, like I was saying, if you can't access the Samples via the Edit Prog-page... then, the Program (and it's Samples) have not been loaded into your MPC. So, troubleshoot the 'LOAD' step, first. 👍🏼
midi-ox doesnt work for me -.-
Did it throw an error?!
This guy is hands down nicest in the game. Professor level
Thanks buddy as usual. This is what helped me create my own disks of samples that I hand picked, for quick access.
Awesome, glad it helped 🙏🏻
What if I tell I squeezed 12 channels out the mpc2xl using the 8outs plus the Digtal out and one of those cheap little A/D convertor..
The Digital 'out' is a stream of the Main Output. There's nothing in the O.S. that allows you to route any other channel to your Digital Output 🙏🏻
@@tonelabqt can you send the digital out to a external mixer channel? I have the main out on 1 and 2 and I have thedigital out on 3 and 4 The mpc is spitting out both signals at the same time. TRy it
Yes, but.. why would you want the same Output from the Analog Output as the Digital?!
lol! no your right i fucked up! too much weed! honestly i was thinking about it .I just didn't think it out long enough.. :)@@tonelabqt
Dope!
I used to do this with my SP 1200 and my MPC 3000. Sadly the Midi dump/input feature was removed in the Vailixi OS for the 3000. You have some excellent tutorials on here, wish I would have found your channel sooner
Are you planning to make a demo about Presets? Can't keep them running on my E4XT, they are automatically cleared...
There's a section in the 'introduction' video where I discuss Presets.. try this 🙏🏻 ua-cam.com/video/hZ8VPWOY7tc/v-deo.html
@@tonelabqt Thank you for your answer, i'll have to study why my Presets are cleared.
Brilliant!
Glad I came across this video. SMPTE was used to sync my sp1200 at the recording studios in the early 90's. However the engineer used to set it up and I couldn't remember how. Thanks bro. P.S. My OG sp1200 looks better than yours. LOL!!
