Kathleen Edwards - Crawling Back to You [Tom Petty]
Choosing a Tom Petty song for a covers record felt like a no-brainer. His music is filled with infinite possibilities. But for me, Wildflowers was the obvious choice. That album has always moved me deeply-it came into my life at a time when I was discovering music in a way that left a lasting impact.
It came out during the last year of my canoe camp days. I used to go to a camp in Temagami, Ontario, every summer starting when I was 12. It was an incredible place-no running water in the cabins, outhouses, and a big dining hall that was the only building with plumbing. Every year, we’d go on canoe trips, and as you got older, the trips got longer. By the time I was 17, we were doing a 60-day expedition, paddling from just outside Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories all the way to the Arctic Circle, finishing on the Copper Mine River.
That trip was intense. We had a couple of food drops, portaged alongside caribou migration trails, ate meals in bug jackets, and sometimes had to carry our canoes for days because the water had dried up. One night, a bear even breathed through my tent wall.
When the trip was finally over, we returned to Yellowknife to pick up the small bags we’d left behind. In mine? My Discman and Wildflowers. I’ll never forget putting on my headphones and listening to that album start to finish. After two months away from music, it felt like a religious experience-a euphoria I can't quite describe.
That memory made covering a Tom Petty song feel like the perfect choice. My friend Matt Sucich, who’s been touring with me, and I had already performed a Petty song together before this record, and singing it with him was pure joy. It brought everything full circle.

Everything in this house breaks What wouldn't under the weight Everything in this house goes away You're going to fix it Or so you say Everything in this house wants to breathe The words that get twisted up when you speak 'Cause there's something to be said about being strong Well there's something to be said about Never being wrong and You're so hard on me Why would you want to be Am I not the...

Kathleen Edwards - I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory
Do not get embroiled. Step outside of the moment. The rational mind need not tend at times. Soften when softening is most required. Edmonton on May 2nd. Hmm.
Can you imagine stumbling into a bar & encountering this? She should be a huge star!
g Great performance. Was that hard on everyone? I loved it.
Longtime fan from the Wet Coast. Beautiful tune & I ❤ your tele, (like fellow homegirl, Sue Foley) Thanks for sharing your gift! 🇨🇦
Goddess!
Los Angeles 😢
Really feel that blind melon influence
You make this Time Petty song your own. I love the wistfulness of your delivery.
What a pleasure. Thank you.
Def ❤😮
Not bad Red! You still got it! Merry Christmas and all that good stuff… 💕🎼🧑🎄💕
I love this voice and never get tired of hearing it. Beautiful song. Ms. Edwards is always telling a good story, and one that is good on the ears and the mind.
Lovely
Sounds great!
Love it! What a voice! On a side note: Botticelli would have loved to paint you!
I just found my new Joni Mitchell💜🫶💋 you and Oliver Anthony should do a collab. He’s pure like you😘
That was divine 🙏 thank you for your beautiful gift💜
Buongiorno, Kathleen. 😊
Seriously - one of the greats.
way better than good
So wonderful voice
Wow, that was incredible!
This song is a whole vibe! Absolutely killing it👏👏
Voice of an angel. Thank you.
So wonderful, that tune has always haunted me a little but you definitely put a few new twists on it. The acoustics are utterly majestic in that room, and your voice is just heavenly paired with that old Martin. Thanks, Kathleen. You're a treasure.
I love her, but that room is twice the size of my apartment. I'm so tired, too.
Usually Petty is sacred ground. But i must say you connected to the song and made it your own. Great work
Thankyou spot on
Thankyou really nicely done 🙏
Finally, my waiting has find it's end. Lovely, beautyfull and touching my heart. Thank you.
Beautiful job! Where are the mic's for this recording? I don't see anything but you playing, and I know there has to be microphones somewhere. Great job. Thanks for uploading.
So glad you’re back
The "Ooh-ooh-oo-ooh" really suits Kathleen's voice and her own song arrangements. Lovely.
You are perfect, Ms Edwards. Great song choice too.
Great write up about your experiences, love that! Also, that Martin sounds amazing!
It’s been a while, like reconnecting an old friend. You still have that magic. Lovely cover.
Cannot wait to see you in NC!
Favorite female voice with my favorite tune off Wildflowers. Thanks
Wow great cover of a great Tom Petty song. I saw u back in 2003 in Toronto sars concert. U sound great then and still do.
Will never forget seeing this at Eddie's Attic in Atl. What a great surprise
: )
Here is a suggested title for a new song ... "Reds Never Age". I always thought of you and your old band as having a similar vibe to Tom. You guys had a very distinctive "band sound". For example, "Back to Me" sounded very "Petty Rock and roll" to me. And you both always had the ability (or chose songs that had the ability) to sound awesome with full band arrangements or simple acoustic arrangements. And if I am not mistaken, I think you must have crossed paths at some point. Wasn't Benmont playing keys on some of your tunes? Mercury comes to mind. Wonderful atmospheric tune. You really should put all these solo recordings together. I'm sure your fans would love it.
Thanks for uploading this video. Your voice and acoustic guitar fill the room beautifully. The version on Spotify is a little more of an ensemble yet wonderful as well. My all time favorite Tom Petty song is “Alright Now”. I sang that to my daughter so many times when she was little. Now she’s about to have a baby girl of her own. This brings back good memories.
Kathleen, I am so glad you are still making music. Tom Petty is one of my all-time favorite artists, and this is beautiful.
Amazing! I discovered both you and Tom Petty via Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown, so great to hear you covering Tom!
Always great to hear you sing. Glad you found your way back to it.
I miss seeing you from time to time at the Kent Stage
You make it look easy to take someone else's song and make it your own but that's one of the hallmarks of your talent. Thanks for posting, Kathleen, don't ever stop.
Worlds collide. Such a great Petty song. Excited for new music! 🤞
Thank you! Wildflowers is my fave TP album. I love your version of this song! Hope to see you soon in The Hammer!
