If you're interested in early aircraft carriers, then this is the channel for you. I'm fascinated by how the aircraft carrier arrived on scene and changed the face of naval warfare. The videos here will focus primarily on US Navy aircraft carriers but may also include other nations from time to time. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you enjoy the content!

USS ESSEX (CVS-9) NORFOLK, 1968 WITH APOLLO 7 ASTRONAUTS
Terrible choice in music, this was not a triumphant return, it was a desperate attempt to get her back on line. Obviously it was only half successful as she was sunk..
The Battle of Coral Sea was a US strategic victory and Yorktown was cheered into port by all who could. Her damage was a small factor in her loss at Midway.
Ok, time for me to get off my butt and build my 1/350 Yorktown model.
That's the spirit!
Complete penetration front deck
Good Lord, the Yorktown took a beating before she finally gave way. Coral Sea, twice at Midway, finally a Jap sub finished her off. Remarkable damage control team on her. Gallant ship and crew. Thanks for posting this. Had an uncle who was a fireman aboard the Enterprise. Served the whole war aboard Big E. He often spoke of the damage control parties on our carriers. Once while speaking to him I mentioned the Yorktown's perils in about a 5-week span and the pounding she took. Of Yorktown's damage control crew, he simply said, "they were the best." High praise from someone who would know.
At 0:06 at the bottom of the screen, you can see the USS Oklahoma with the wood structure on its side that they used to flip it over and passed the site of the USS Arizona. This is why all the sailors of the Yorktown we’re standing on the deck at 0:33 and the rest of the video
A great and gallant ship who would never see Pearl again after she left on May30th.
Man, we were making carriers like other countries made cars. And not only in numbers, but also in both quality and quantity.
Concise. Well done.
Thank you!
the USS Yorktown was a tough ship she was reported sunk 3 time by the japanese and the words" prepare to be repel boardes" was called for the first time in over a century when a Jap plane was lost and mistook the Yorktown as a Jap carrier and almost landed on the deck of the yorktown
Three days later she sailed again, to her destiny and into history.
Thanks for this.
Thank you for posting this! I had no idea such footage existed. It’s like a portal into the past!
At that point she had less than two weeks to live..7 June?🤔
😎
Isn't that a short runway?
The whole purpose of a catapult is that you don't need a long runway.
My dad‘s ship from April 15, 43 Joe he mustard out March 20 646. He was a antiaircraft gunner on sponson to the right of the island.
She is Majestic
Looks like one of the Pearl Harbor casualties in the background at 1:48. Great video.
Looks like the Arizona’s mainmast
Little did they realized she would be under water in ten days. :(
Lexington didn't make it back.
That doesnt look like PH
My Dad was on it in the 50s when they were converting it to an amphibious assault ship CVHA-1

I see the ghosts of all those leathery old admirals in their khakis, saluting.
At one minute and 24 seconds ,it is passing by the Enterprise or the Hornet.
Hornet. The camo pattern on the island is a giveaway.
Closed cheerleader arm chair shop.
Thanks for this VERY RARE footage of a brave and beautiful ship.
loved this. LOVED the music too. i almost cry when i see old vintage wartime films of these old carriers. i love them so much 🥺
a ship who's name should be revered, the Yorktown Class were the stars of the Pac Fleet. with Yorktown fighting in Coral Sea and Midway, Hornet delivering the Doolittle raid, and the Big E taking all the Japanese could throw at her and still floated on the day the war ended. a tremendous class of ships. find me another 3 ship class that did as much.
What was their final port of call?
What a stud she was.
A stud? a female stud?
@@Peorhum Jacked up in the Coral sea, towed back to Pearl, patched up and sent to Midway. Yes, she's "Yorktown 'Thee Stallion."
My favorite ship. A damn shame she was lost at Midway. I’d like to think she is still on duty, protecting Midway by keeping an eye on the remains of Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu. There needs to be a CVN named Yorktown.
I most definitely agree.
How can you defend a hot dog stand when you're at the bottom of the ocean? Who wants to attack Midway?
CVN-82 should be named for Ens. Jesse Brown, the Navy’s first African-American aviator.
@@Вивсівідстій No, that isn't a capital ship worthy achievement. I'm tired of the political agenda names.
@@dogsbd Totally agree! New CVNs should be Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga, Hornet, Franklin, Bunker Hill, etc. Honoring the great veterans of WWII.
Crazy to have just watched the natualis footage of the gun mounts in the bow. And to see men standing on the bow on those very same mounts in this video. Wild
You have to wonder if she would have survived Midway had Hornet's flight commander followed order and not done his own dang thing. Had they been where they were supposed to be they could have joined the fight and possibly ALL four Japanese carriers could have been sunk at the same time. No counter attack from Hiryu means Yorktown wouldn't have been hit again.
No one talked about it much, but Fletcher (and LEX and YORKTOWN) could have used ENTERPRISE and HORNET at Coral Sea, but they were off delivering Doolittle’s Raiders, something cooked up for them in WDC.
Incredible. What history knowing her fate.
Thank you very much for posting this. I never knew such a video existed. I recall hearing that YORKTOWN was in a critical fuel situation entering the harbor. Leaks sprung in her hull by near miss bombs had drained her bunkers and she had lost her oiler NEOSHO in the Coral Sea battle. The account I remember had her burning diesel fuel in her boilers as she finished her trip.
She gave her all !
A GREAT ship. Never saw this before. Thanks.
A great video ... never seen this before? Thanks for posting this!
Yorktown passing Hornet at 1:24 makes a person think that a picture of all three CV-5 class ships together may exist somewhere depending on Enterprises location in the harbour?
Enterprise was moored to Berth F-2 on Ford Island when this footage was taken.
Where is CV-8 moored at when CV-5 passed by?
@@richm896 view north west CV-8 is at F-9.
She was lost at The Battle of Midway.
She was sunk by the japanese at least 4 times lol. At least they thought so.
Severely damaged she was sunk by a Japanese submarine
Just like the Germans the Japanese never had a chance.
My Dad served on the Thetis Bay in 1945 as a aviation mechanic .
Great video Subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
The most challenging passage is the USS SARATOGA (CV-3) northbound in the 1930s, passing between Gold and Contactor's Hills. The channel's width appears to be approximately 200 feet at its narrowest point, despite a design width of 300 feet and later 500 feet at that time. The off-center conning position demands exceptional piloting expertise.
Thank you for making this video. My Father in law served on The Big T. I can’t wait for him to see this video.
Thank you!

My Uncle Peter served and unfortunately died on this ship Jan 21, 1945 during one of the two kamikaze attacks that day. Uncle Pete, Bill missed you until the day he passed. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. We will finally get to meet one day. Remembering you this Memorial Day, 2024. Love, N.
