    I don't think healing potions are bad per se, mostly because it's a well-known abstract metaphor, accepted by a big share of players. But at the same time I really don't like the feeling that you can get a serious wound and immediately heal that off - all within seconds of action. So I'd be looking for temporary HP solutions. Yes, a bandage applied immediately after a cut can stop bleeding and help you survive in combat, but you'd still have to spend some time healing that cut after combat. With HP systems it works if a bandage provides a character with temporary HPs expended before normal HPs, but after the combat all temporary HPs drop to zero.

    While this is absolutely something that I have a lot of thoughts on (barbarian is, in general, my favorite type of class to play in most games); my own system I've been building isn't really fleshed out to the level of making classes yet (other than a few vague directions and broad-strokes-design-concepts I'm considering), so I'm not sure I'll end up with something to show for this. I mean, I _could_ easily go into detail about why the PF1 barbarian is the absolute gold-standard for the class (and is a _huge_ influence on how I design my own classes, not just how I do my own Barbarian); but Pathfinder isn't exactly a 'small-indie-RPG' that needs more attention, so that doesn't feel quite like the spirit of this challenge... I might be able to put something together that is, rather than just showing off the finished product of my Barbarian, going more into the design process and how I take influence or learn lessons from things like PF1 (and the, in my opinion, 'dropping of the ball' on the PF2 barbarian) to shape a unique direction for my own stuff, even if it's incomplete thus far. We'll see...

    2:30 I have never understood this. How is it not narratively interesting to make a serious and important decision in the middle of combat? What seems less interesting is just letting players do everything all at once, because then they don't even have a decision to make in the first place.

    • @TalesFromElsewhereGames
      @TalesFromElsewhereGames 2 дні тому

      Hey there! I kinda emphasize the point at around 00:56 where I mention that healing potions often just prolong or stall the scene, rather than do something narratively or mechanically interesting. It doesn't move the scene toward a conclusion, and if you're playing a game that has abstracted bodily health into large stacks of Hit Points, the thing it's restoring (HP) isn't all that narratively interesting anyway. I'm not suggesting that it's better if it's harder to use healing potions - it's not an issue with action economy, per se - it's that the potions themselves are not serving a mechanical or narratively interesting function within the system. Hope that helps unpack what I'm gettin' at! Sorry if it wasn't super clear, I tried to keep this video's length shorter, but it required that I gloss over some points 🤠 Appreciate you checking it out and commenting!! It means a lot that folks take an interest, especially if they have counter points and disagreements!

    #GetBarbaric In my current draft for FENCER, there's a few different ways to represent a Berserker archetype. On a pure roleplay level, you can favor the Power stance, which trades the mobility and defense of the other basic combat stances for improved damage. You can also build a character around techniques like Concentration and Effort, allowing you to ignore penalties and improve dice pools at the cost of exhausting yourself. With optional rules, you can enter trances (game-mechanical states of mind) such as Berserk with effects similar to the Power stance, or (in a game where characters transcend normal human skill) the potent Warp Spasm which makes you nearly unstoppable, but almost as dangerous to your allies as your enemies.

    This is really good! I love the philosophy behind the new rage mechanic, giving the round-by-round choice, but I do think it's a bit strong. (I haven't playtested it, just thinking about shrugging off 6 points of damage at level 1, why would you ever spend your rage when you are invincible?). Maybe something like: "when you lose HP (not temp HP) from an attack/failed save, you gain a number of temp HP equal to your current rage." (I really hate dnd's terminology 😆) At a later level this ability could be enhanced it by allowing you to gain the temp HP before going unconscious. Basically, instead of reducing the damage by 6, you gain 6 temp HP. Since you can only have 1 "block" of temp HP per dnd rules, you're not just _always_ shrugging off a ton of damage. Eventually you'll run out.

    • @TalesFromElsewhereGames
      @TalesFromElsewhereGames 3 дні тому

      Haha yeah, the damage reduction is definitely too strong at early levels if you're able to get your Rage pretty high. Having it Temp HP-based would probably help balance it out, yeah!

    You label one side of the equation "arithmetic burden," but you don't label the other side of the equation. This creates a disingenuous argument. The only genuine way to decrease the burden you're discussing here is to decrease the number of calculations. You label that as a burden, but it's also control. Control is the part of the equation you leave out, ironically using the word tactical several times in the process. The whole point of a tactical decision is to exercise control. The more areas of influence a player has control over, the greater total control he has over any particular scenario. Regardless of how you spin it, a game with a lower burden will also ALWAYS have less controllable play. You're right that both versions are completely viable. But it's a lie to include simplicity and tactics on the same side of the equation. They are diametrically opposed. Always By definition
