    I enjoyed hearing your enthusiasm as you opened your box of supplies! The fabric you chose is beautiful! I would like to have yards of it! 😉 I have been sewing for 67 years. I have a very simple tip for you, regarding threading any needle, for any type of hand sewing. When you pinch the tip of the thread between your left thumb and forefinger, don’t leave such a long amount of thread hanging loose. Instead, try just allowing a very small amount to just barely peek out. Maybe an 1/8 of an inch. The needle is the boss, (in control) not the thread). With a needle in your right hand, put it on the tip of the thread, pushing the eye of the needle on the thread until you can see that the needle is threaded. I hope you find this helpful. Some people attempt to push the thread into the eye of the needle. That’s harder because the thread bends and wiggles. The reason why it is so much easier to do it the other way around, is because the thread can’t move, as it does when a longer amount is dangling loose. Also, get in the habit of not cutting thread, or embroidery floss (if you venture into the wonderful world of embroidery) longer than 18 inches. If it’s longer it is prone to tangling and you don’t need unwanted frustration. When I am doing hand sewing for any reason, there is another habit that I developed, that helps to reduce tangled thread. After every few stitches (3-4) I roll the needle in between my thumb and forefinger. It helps the thread stay loose, therefore it doesn’t tangle. The only way that I can think of describing it with more detail, is to say that my right thumb pushes in an upward motion while my forefinger is ever so gently, pushing down, or in the opposite direction. I’m looking forward to seeing your project coming to life! Thank you for sharing your adventure with us. Happy sewing!

    I would have made the same “mistake” with the cutting. It turned out really nice still but that is a bit frustrating. I wonder why they labeled the colors with letters on that first page when they didn’t match the letters for the actual block. Anyway, you did great rolling with it!

    I think all quilters have several to numerous UFO's. Both with quilting and cross stitching. Cross stitching was my first love. I always wanted to start quilting, but kept putting it off. I finally gave it a go about 3 years ago and am addicted to it, literally. I have to make myself sit and do cross stitching. I would spend time in my sewing room/guest bedroom 24/7 if I could. I would send the largest quilt top to the long armors, then I might want to tackle my least favorite quilt and get it out of the way. I am like you in that I work on projects starting 1-2 months before the actual holiday; sometimes that is just not enough time to get done what I would like to. I have thought of a plan where I would start on the next holiday as soon as one was over. Have not achieved it yet. Love you channel! Love your beauty and personality! I am a born Okie and will be turning 69 in Sept. You are never too old to learn!! Thank you so very much for sharing!!!!❤

    Isn’t it funny how we say, “That’s not my style, BUT…..” 😀 I do that all of the time and it stretches my imagination. (I’m excited to start your quilt pattern! It's at the front of my binder looking happy and bright.) Thimble Blossoms is just adorable and yes, the cuddle might be a nice addition. That and Kona ;) They would be my recommendations t finish. I love the Socialites (oops Sewcialite) fabric - Kind of French Country? But that’s a LOT of work. I’m not into that tiny work, unless maybe EPP. Impatient-me? LOL Designer Mystery Box - so pretty! That Christmas quilt backing - yummmmmmy. Yes! =========================================================== I love the Lighthouse quilt. Sucker for the theme and the traditional pattern. The Riley Blake fabric Mysterious Gingham Fields quilt may be number 1. My thoughts 🙂 Really enjoyed going through all the goodies with you.

    I think you should make your sewcialites 2 into a small project (pillow? wall hanging?) instead of forcing yourself to do tiny piecing with fabric you don't love anymore! you could use your favorite 12 blocks and just do a 3x4 setting and get it done! or make 3 more blocks and do a 4x4 setting. The other project I would choose is the kona solids quilt because I think you're the closest to finishing that one!

    • @aphillips3602
      @aphillips3602 13 днів тому

      I was thinking the same thing! A smaller project like a wall hanging reminds you where you have been and inspires you cus you have learned SO much since then. But hearing how much you didn’t enjoy socialites, and did enjoy some of the others, should be your first hint. Crafting should bring joy, or at the minimum not dread. ❤

    It was fun seeing your WIPs! Here’s my vote for what to do next - Prioritize Barn Sampler while it’s still hot out and acquire the fabric you need while it’s still available. Stop when it starts to cool down and you get Autumn feelings. Make at least one if not two more rows of spangled before putting it away for a while. When you go back to it, having two or three rows done will be much less intimidating. Push through to get the Kona solids one done this year but maybe get it all cut and labeled in baggies and work on it in bits in between other more interesting fabrics. I feel the same way about solid colors! I would resist starting Swoon unless you have a bad day/week and really need the boost. I would put Sewcialites 2 into proper time out and decide at a later date if you want to fully finish it or maybe just modify it and make something much smaller with the blocks you already have. I definitely wouldn’t grit your teeth and finish it right now. My vote for longarming order - navy and white first (seeing it longarmed might motivate you with your Kona one!) and then the greyish greenish one. This might be something you have no interest in or time for but the simple one with Dwell fabric would look amazing with simple big stitch hand quilting in navy.

    The block of the month blocks are lovely. I wish we could get nice things like that here. I have lots of scrap fabric and am thinking of getting some adding machine paper and sewing them up. Thanks for this lovely video, I really enjoyed it.

    I enjoy long videos so I can sew along. So I usually look for videos that are working on the blocks or the same parts I’m working on. I understand others don’t like long videos because of time. Since you will never be able to please everyone you will need to make videos that best suit you and your time. I know I appreciate those who make videos because I know the time and effort you all take to do them so thank you so much. ~Martha San Jose, California

      Thank you so much for this perspective, Martha! You are absolutely right. And I do the same with watching videos while sewing! There’s a time and a place for all lengths of videos. 💗 Thank you for watching!

    Love the quilt you are tackling and can use the tips in other small EPP blocks. There is also another quilt and book you might be interested in by Liz Lois called Nearly insane. The book is from 2005 and no longer in print but I was able to snag one this year but had started the quilt in 2019 with any finished 6” block I could find in other books. Like you I have many projects but also major life events happened. I had put it away but am resurrecting it now. If interested look up Fabadashery. Scroll back to I believe 2012 in her blog to see her story and follow along with her red and white rendition of the Nearly insane quilt. Easy to get the “Insanity” quilt and Nearly Insane quilt confused because the titles are so similar and they are quite the challenge! For some reason if it’s easy I find it difficult but if it’s difficult I find it easy 😅 After other trials of threads and needles I think I just found my sweet spot. Just started using a 100 wt Japanese silk thread by SuperiorThreads called Kimono Silk Thread and am using a beading needle. Love it! The longer needle is easier on my arthritic hands as apposed to the 11 milliner/straw needle and it is easier to only pick up a couple threads at a time. I know Sue Daley does not recommend 1 thread but if it’s good fabric it will hold fine and the stitches are definitely invisible.

      Thank you so much for the recommendation! I just looked it up and WOW what a beautiful quilt! Maybe one day I'll get to it and be able to enjoy making such a beautiful project. Thank you for your tips as well!

    I enjoy both formats. Depending upon the day, I may only have time for a quick video. But at other times, a nice chatty sew-along, even to only watch, is soothing. 😊 Edit: At the end now. This was like spending time in the DC area with one of my best girlfriends doing a little quilting, looking through magazines, and going with her (and hubby) to the fair. Only thing missing is that when I visited her, we would hit one of the great restaurants! There is such a nice variety of authentic ethnic food in the area. You can eat around the world! Thanks for the fun time. (The plane was a hoot :D )

      Great to know, thank you! Yes, we have so much amazing food from all corners of the globe in the area. I'm grateful for that!

    Southern charm quilts has a beautiful round the world quilt called Inner Beauty. I made one and it is the most beautiful quilt I have ever made. I think the fabrics I used were from the Someplace Grand collection, but she has many collections and they are all beautiful/ Her name is Melanie Traylor .

    The Joy collection is just lovely. Can't wait to see this quilt come together :) One of my fondest childhood memories is of arriving in Indiana from Virginia and snuggling under a great-aunt's quilt in the spare bedroom. I felt so safe and snuggly beneath it after our long day of traveling. Quilts are magical!

    Congratulations. 🎉 Heading over to the website to bookmark and order the pattern! It appears to be "Gumbo-approved!" Beginning to quilt after learning from my grandmother and watching my great-grandmother and great aunts is doing the same for me - all the warm, exciting feels. ❤

    Emma Jones Vintage has some really good tips and she uses something called Hexiform. I’m old school and thread baste with thick paper so I’ve never used it. I think needles are a pretty personal thing but I’ve found that the Bohin Milliners needles size 10 are brilliant for EPP and most hand sewing because I have man hands 😂
