We Are Being Transformed

Creating a mosaic of a world in dynamic cultural exchange: one scholarly interview at a time.
Here we explore liminal spaces and the contours of reality; the myriad of ways people interact with their world through the vehicles of ritual, cult, and lore.
An exercise in the Superhumanities, we do the Classics, Religious Studies, and History.
And Lucian- as much Lucian as possible.

Just stumbled across your channel incredible classical contemporary insight great work. Thank you for sharing the light Professor … Blessings
Thank you kindly!
Based on the title, I thought this was going to be a discussion about Jennifer Lopez or Kim Kardashian.
That ass has bee defiled. This is a different ass.😂
Great conversation loved it.
Thanks so much!
The problem with the "fan fiction" analogy is that it could explain authorial intentions but not reception. People took (take) this stuff way more seriously than most comic book readers. For instance, isn't todays Mariology derived from the Protoevangelium of James? That remains a global phenomenon in 2024, and devotees of Mary do not treat Lourdes like Comic-Con. Other than that, this interview was awesome and I love the channel you have put together.
Come to think of it, there's a problem with using fan fiction as an analogy for authorship as well. Do we know that the apocryphal authors intended their work as fictional?
Thanks so much! "Fan fiction" is an imperfect analogy that more conveys the curiosity aspect of writing these texts- certainly they were taken more seriously, as you point out. However, I know some comic priests who take Batman canon and lore pretty seriously as well :)
@WABTpodcast True. I find early Christian pseudoepigraphy so fascinating but I don't think it's as simple as "forgery" like Ehrman says. Fan fiction is good because doesn't imply the authors were acting dishonestly. Maybe we'll never know
Good video, but I would like to suggest you create time stamps for your videos, as there are so many aspects, or topics which are brought up, this makes reviewing the video much easier
Thanks for watching- and the tip!
I really enjoyed this conversation & learned several things that I took away from it. (PS We recently spoke with eachother & Kirsten, but here I am reaching out to you via my nom de plume) Keep on keeping on & keep fighting the good fight 💜
Sounds great!
I'm soooo behind with watching your content - my apologies! You always have very interesting topics!
No worries at all, Stephanie- thanks for watching 😊
I think I'd like this show better if practically anyone else was the host 🙄
I've never seen someone trying so hard, and be so terrible at this 😅
Your channel is a hidden gem, Lord Sobek.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Wonderful discussion. I agree fully that this channel is bringing the forum for open sharing of knowledge and it’s important imo 💚🐢
Much appreciated!
Several years of reading Dr. Frankfurter's works and I think its the first time I've actually seen his face 😅 Thankyou so much for all of these fascinating interviews!🙌🏻✨️ 📚
Glad you enjoyed it! As you know, Dr Frankfurter is one of the very best in his field. There's another interview I'm currently editing coming soon- sometime in November.
I wonder if Dr BeDhun thinks that Manichaeanism played a direct role in the eclipse of Zoroastrianism in Persia especially since it can be seen as having an influence on Islam. Any book recommendations regarding this topic and what volume of the Noesis Journal has the article you mentioned on Manichaeanism?
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! The Gnosis journal is from Brill- it's a bit pricey (par the course), but you can find it here: brill.com/view/journals/gnos/gnos-overview.xml Luckily, the introduction and a couple of articles are open access.
Audio is perfectly clear, and what a phenomenal message! Wow! Litwa absolutely smashed it here, I've got to get this book. Thanks for sharing!
Appreciate you watching 🙂
This is the second time in the last few days I’ve heard “Christian communism.” Voluntarily giving does not equal forceful taking.
It’s 2024 and the dude still thinks Harvard is prestigious
Who cares about prestige? What did you think of the message presented in this video?
Thanks!🙂
Welcome!
Many heritics used secrecy to consciously differ from the norm. Heresies started small and locally. Christians had the sense of apostolicity reflecting the Jewish sense of heresies firing up. The Catholic view was the original form that had proponents in every place.
@Frst2nxt 100% incorrect. Clearly you need to learn more about early church history
small critique. Weird and sometimes bad video production.
Thanks for the feedback
Good interview, thank you
Thanks for watching 👍
Great lecture
Glad it was helpful!
👼
The fever may have broken! Still very much enjoying some We Are Being Transformed as I recover 💚🐢
Thanks Karie-Anne, I appreciate all your support 😊
Wow, great little interview, always mind blowing to hear John Collins
Thanks for listening
You lost me arter 2 min
You two gentlemen are making my hay fever/cold way more enjoyable than it should be lol. Thank you 💚🐢
Glad you enjoy it! Feel better soon
Proud of you Dad!!! ❤
😊
aww!
Interesting ideas but does the guest believe in the standard Darwinian view of monkeys to men as factual history and all other accounts relatibg ro human origins and history to be pure mythology?
I've seen your name around various channels for years, I'm glad to have finally found your channel and your podcast. I'll be eagerly making my way through the catalog. 💜
Welcome- I appreciate it!
Thank you for this conversation. Very excited to hear that Mina Monier will be publishing an Arabic version of the Diatessaron. I did some work on the Diatessaron, particularly its traditions about the crucifixion, last sayings of Jesus, and the co-crucified bandits, in my UVA dissertation. The order of materials proved quite diverse across different linguistic traditions. Question for James: are any scholars working on a Syriac critical edition? It would seem to be a next logical step after the Arabic critical edition is done, working backwards from the Arabic text in consultation with Ephrem's Diatessaron Commentary.
Thanks so much Dr Bilby! Textual fluidity is a fascinating aspect of these traditions.
I'm not sure, but it would be a good project. Leloir's work on the Diatessaron wording in Tatian's commentary is still the most important resource for that. At the same time, in some of my work I've found a phrase here or there that Leloir might have missed or misclassified, so it would be a good project just to re-do what Leloir did ... and see how similar the conclusions are. One critique of my book was that I didn't pay any attention to all the testimonies about the Diatessaron in Syriac. That would make a nice compilation, but my point in the book was to work with extant, complete harmonies [the Dura parchment being the lone exception]. In other words, I wanted to know how consistent the manuscript tradition was; the testimony tradition was beyond my purview.
I love the passion for the writers and texts! It’s refreshing to have dedication to the scholarship of what’s there & not the theology’s associated with it.
Thanks Karie-Anne 🙂
This is very fascinating, I'll be sure to read his works and the mentioned apocrypha, it shows there's some depth into the Christian thought (outside the canon/orthodoxy/heresiology) and the vastness of the literature. Thank you, man🤝🏼
Thanks for watching/commenting!
Just finishing up Dr. Litwa's Carpocrates book. Great interview as always Jason. May Glycon continue to guide your path! 🐍
As always, thanks Joel for all your support
If you want a guest on the Nephilim, I recommend you reach out to Amar Annus from the University of Tartu. He has written an important paper on the topic, called “On the Origin of Watchers: A Comparative Study of the Antediluvian Wisdom in Mesopotamian and Jewish Traditions”.
Thanks for the recommendation!
@@WABTpodcast You’re welcome!
Great interview!
Thank you
Engaging interview / topic thank you
Thanks for watching 🙂
Thanks for the shout-out!! Yes, it's all my fault. :P All joking aside, this is a super interesting interview. Putting the book on my list!
Thanks for watching!
I would really like to know why this platform is recommending me so much bullshitology lately. How does UA-cam know that I despise postmodern diction and Lucian (one of the channel's execrable inspirations)?
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree:the man from Samosata is a total BEAST. 😊 Thanks for sharing your thoughts- it's always good to get a different perspective. Good luck finding stuff you dig 😉
Appreciate the shout out about the Hospitality and the Perfume of the Bandit. 🙂 Tony is a living encyclopedia of Christian apocryphal literature. So glad you interviewed him.
Thank you- and great job on the translations. I really enjoy them 😊
Great interview. Very articulate professor. As a medical practitioner of 30 years, I like your donation choice.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Yes, Dr Burke is pretty great and so is DWOB.
