Before Guitar Hero We Had This in 1995! - Quest For Fame
Guitar Hero was a massively popular rhythm game, but was it the first? Quest for Fame in an odd game that uses a strange printer port guitar pick(called the Vpick") that allows you to "play" classic rock songs and follow a weird adventure game narrative featuring the band Aerosmith. I don't know if I would call it good by any means but it certainly is interesting, and it provides copious amounts of corny FMV.

There is Still Nothing Like Microsoft 3D Movie Maker in 2024!

There still has never really been another creation tool like Microsoft 3d Movie Maker(3dmm). Released in 1995 by Microsoft, this game leverages the brender tech from Argonaut games and allows anyone to make 3D animations or "movies". I still find it fascinating just how well it still holds up, and its great to see so many people still having fun with it! Chapters: 0:00 - Intro 0:47 - My history...
Is This The Best PCI Sound Card for DOS? (Yamaha XG YMF724)

The Yamaha YMF724 is a cheapish $30-40 sound card. It can be the perfect DOS sound card for certain systems, but you will have some compatibility issues without the right hardware. If you want one I would recommend a motherbboard that supports SBLINK for the best experience. The sound is perfect when it works though, my only complaint is the OPL synth is a bit quiet. This was actually the 2nd game for what originally had a "virtual guitar" which was a plastic mini guitar with a real string wound around some pegs. You would strum the strings with a real guitar pick to make the rhythm. Much easier than the Vpick. The company was called Virtual Music and I think they went under and IBM must have bought it and released Quest For Fame. Born To Rock, the first game had the story about meeting and joining your band. Virtual Music started to develop V-drums too which was a mouse pad that you hit with drum sticks to play drum parts.

    • @DOSStorm
      @DOSStorm 19 годин тому

      Yeah after I played through this I saw there was a version with a full plastic guitar thing with nylon strings you could pluck. Oddly it looks like there were Playstation and arcade ports as well. The arcade thing sort of seems fitting since the game seems designed around being a quarter eater even on the PC. However, I was unaware this was a sequel so that is interesting. The vDrum thing sounds like a much better idea than this pick at least on paper.

    Ah yes, now I get it. Complaining about a DOS system emulator because it works like...DOS. And no clicking nor GUI. Just like in DOS. Aha. How about recording a video rant complaining about DOS requiring more than XYAB, Start, Select and D-pad to be operated?

    • @DOSStorm
      @DOSStorm 25 днів тому

      Who is complaining? The original DOSbox does work fine, but the newer forks offer some nice enhancements. You're taking this video too seriously, it was made for beginners looking for easier ways to play some games. Using dosbox is technically more complex than regular old MS-DOS because it requires configuration of virtual drives and CD-ROMs. My older video on this subject got flooded with lots of questions regarding many of the things I explain here. Using DOS might seem obvious to some people but its an unknown to the younger generation or people who have simply forgot.

    I'm going to be "that guy" and tell you all to not use save states to make booting your games easier. If there is any kind of memory corruption save states can and will keep that memory corruption alive. Instead get something like Dosbox Game Launcher and use it to configure and launch Dosbox-x. You can also turn off "close on complete" and use an empty .bat file to launch a command line. If that is too much trouble just save your current configuration and load it the next time you start Dosbox-x. I say this because I used save states in this way until a some memory corruption showed up in a Windows 3.11 install and it would crash on any game launch in Windows 3.11. The fix for my issue was easy, start with a clean Dosbox-x boot, launch Win3.11 then my game, and don't use save states as a shortcut.

    • @DOSStorm
      @DOSStorm 22 дні тому

      Good point and you're not wrong, I don't think save states are always the best idea for some circumstances. It especially is probably not the greatest idea if programs are running especially something complex like Windows 3.1. If you just use it before programs run to recall things like mount commands I think its probably less likely to cause problems though.

    86Box is much better for me. You literally built you virtual computer from many components starting in the early 80s and emulate a whole old PC up to 1999 with Voodoo Card Emulation. I like the feeling of configurating a system, old Windows / OS2 systems and so on. It's more difficulty for people which have no experience with old computers. But it's so much more variable in use. Just use newer drivers like cutemouse or newer cd rom drivers for most memory inside the emulation.
