    My favorite program for running DOS games on any Windows PC is "D-Fend Reloaded". Its basically a frontend that makes everything really easy, and you can configure it for each game. You can also take a screenshot of the game and use that as the icon for each game you add to the list.

    I'll never understand why people are afraid of the command line. I don't care what OS you're on. If you want to have any street cred of being 'tech savvy' then you must learn and embrace the command line. Running retro games like DOS games requires tech savvy. It wasn't easy for us back then to get these games working on our systems that were built in that time period either. The games and software were very picky about having specific hardware and specific system configurations back then.

    • @DOSStorm
      @DOSStorm 2 дні тому

      I agree, everyone should learn commands but you have to start somewhere. I made this video as an introduction to using them. The mount commands in DOSBOX aren't really akin to using a real machine anyway, but after you get that out of the way you can pretty much use it like real DOS.

    I grew up in early 90s with dos 5/6 win311. I was a programmer for a bank right out of high school and switched to Linux Anyways the fact that younger people are keeping interest in dos alive makes me happy! Thank you! I still loved that i could load mouse emm smartdrv mscdex , with some drivers i acquired from wherever and still had 621kb free. I would switch load orders and learn the switches...i was pretty proud of my self I even had an emm386 variant maybe qemm386....anyways if anyone knows what it is i would love to find it again. I could address hard drive space as "ram". I used it, and it sucked of course, but I needed 8mb of ram to run Magic Carpet on my 486sx 25 mhz, yes I know it could hardly run doom at full screen and I only had 4mb. It worked. After it thashed my hard disk for forever, the game loaded and i had about a frame every 5 seconds, but, it did infact run......and on 512k video memory at that.

    Outside of Dosbox and its forks, try to have a look, whether a proper source port exists for the game you want to play. You would be surprised by how many old games can be played natively on modern hardware with lots of QoL improvements thanks to the source ports created by the dedicated community - almost all the major game engines from 1990s have received some kind of modern source port. Many games that you know from DOS also had competent Windows versions (Wine is your friend...) or even console ports - this can be especially helpful when looking for ways how to play them on a mobile device.

    Dosbox-Pure inside Retroarch is superior to both of these. Combined with the MegaBezel shader suite, one can have a truly authentic, emulated experience, complete with the absolute best CRT shaders possible. CRT shaders are essential for any true retro purist, looking to experience the past as one gamed during the time period.
