    I strongly suggest you get a skate board to move heavy things by yourself. I have a heavy duty one dedicated to this. It has plenty of screw holes in various places.

    Why did I spend a five year apprenticeship learning to mortice and tennon. When a simple half lap would do. Must kick myself for spending the past forty years doing it in a tried and tested fashion. Viewers beware of many skills online.

    That's giant man, kudos to that standing alone post! And your craftsmenship :) But why not dividing the door into 2 and dividing the weight to both posts, sounds more durable to me? Also as a handtool woodworker, that upwards hand sawing while standing not on the ground was something, I'm pretty sure it didn't finish quick like in the video. Addition to all, diagonals are the right way, not like many videos on youtube. Very very well done

      @@brumasbusiness the posts are oak and the gate frame is a C16 construction grade softwood (most likely pine or spruce)

    WOW !!! That's a beautiful gate !! 😃 As a side note... Have you considered an alternate power source and/or battery backup in case of power loss ?

      @@tvanloon3995 hi, yes this is something I looked into but I think I’m going to hold out as the plan is to incorporate a backup generator for the whole house when we do the electrics on the main build. However, we’re a long way from that point at the moment so for now if we have any power cuts we will have to operate it manually

    i made a metal gate almost identical to yours for a guy and used the same principles with the steel as you did with the wood . It was labor intensive work but the end result is good .

    I would have used a UV/water protectant wood stain on the fence before adding all the locking hardware to protect the wood from the elements. raw wood outside isn't the best idea with no weather proofing.

      @@project.restoration yes, but I still would highly recommend another layer of protection that is easy to do. That project is lots of money and work to not take care of it. looks excellent by the way! I recommend this stuff. Cabot® Semi-Transparent Stain & Sealer Low VOC is a deep-penetrating, linseed oil-based stain that beautify and protect exterior wood. comes in all kinds of colors.

    in order for the gate not to slide down over time, a small wheel is required at the far end of the gate that rests on the cement foundation you cast, this is very important!!!!

      @@joniboulware1436 all wooden gate posts are subject to rot, all you can do is work on reducing the onset with hardy timbers, treatments and drainage.

      @@Venezien85 that’s the only way to acquire the stability that it requires. All wood in our climate will eventually rot but this should last us a very long time before that becomes an issue

    Impressive gate. I have an understanding that the diagonal bracing should be orientated in compression rather than tension for maximum strength to prevent racking. Also you stated that you were using treated lumber, inhaling fumes of the treatment chemicals is hazardous. Your gate is a testament to your meticulous standards.

      @@218philip yes that’s correct and what I went with on this gate but there are ways of constructing bracing to utilise tension. Due to our wet climate we wanted to use treated timber for the Shou Sugi Ban as a sort of “belt and braces” approach but yes it’s not ideal burning it for sure. Thanks!

    Hmmm… why did you mount it on the exterior fence post? I would have thought the post abutting the retaining wall would be better and allow a flush 180degree opening and allow access into property from both lanes.

      @@hellsangel2005 no reason for hanging on that post other than we preferred it to open that way. As for the 180° opening from both sides, the electric opener wouldn’t all that, it only opens to a maximum of something like 110°
