I actually switched to LilyPond instead and I really love it. I've always loved programming code. I grew up with command line interfaces. I started learning music theory because of some program that came on a disk in DOS, written in BASIC. There are some really cool advantages of doing all-text input, too. Anything can be copy-pasted. I'm also really impressed at all the advanced notation features LilyPond has.

What a pity, you did not add MuseScore. MuseScore 4 (and further versions) will overtake the whole market due to its overpowerfully development team. And - its totally free. Already Musescore4 has become a very well score editor, easy to use and producing high valuable scores. Meanwhile, Finale has stopped development and this will happen to all non-free editors. Its only a question of time.

It is always difficult to change the music notation program that you have been using for many years. This is the case for everyone and applies to all programs. If you are happy with “your” program, there is no reason to change. I was also happy with “my” music notation program for many years, I knew every button, every trick and had become very quick at using it. But my dissatisfaction with the so-called “AGB” (the software terms of use) has grown over the last few years and at some point the pain is great enough that I want to try something new. Since I didn't want to buy another expensive music notation program, I “forced” myself to install Musescore4 and try it out. And lo and behold: it was a good decision! Of course, Musescore4 was totally unfamiliar to me at first, but I got to grips with it relatively quickly and within a few days I was already producing great scores. And I really like the note design of Musescore4, it looks very good and it does a lot of things right. And best of all: my (very many) scores from my “old” program can be imported! The result is not perfect and I have to rework it, but it's good enough to save me a lot of work. Now, about 5 months after my switch, I am completely satisfied with Musescore4 and I will stick with it. Great software and it costs nothing. Since I've also been a Linux user for a long time, it's the ideal complement to the operating system, because there's no other proper music notation software under Linux. I am happy with Muscore4!

Meanwhile, Finale development has stopped! FInale users are asked to change to Dorico. This is a huge chance for Musescore. I myself am a new Musescore user (i started with Musescore 4.3 a few month ago) and i am really impressed! I had used Capella (another - german - note editor) for more than 20 years but i wanted to change to another software due to the bad AGBs (software agreements) of Capella. I tried Musescore4 and i will stay! I am not young (65 years) but i still like Musescore very much. The score design of Musescore4 is really nice "out of the box" and I also find the operation very logical and easy to understand. Great program! And - last not least - Musescore can read my Capella Files as well as it can read MusicXML. Its a great help to convert my Capella Scores to Musescore.

Hello, I have the newest version of Musescore and I am having a recurring problem with the bends, I have a fretless bass line with bends and it works correctly in one measure but when I copy the same line to the next measure the notes that have bends do not work, and so with the other measures, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, I'm tired of this problem, I need a solution please, no matter how much I try to solve it I can't get it to work, if I don't find a solution I'll have to change the program to another like Guitar Pro, Notion or Finale. I already tried reinstalling musescore but it doesn't work. Does anyone have a solution??!

Thanks for doing this comparison. I've found Sibelius to be the most "like writing on a piece of paper" that gives one the ability to change things on the fly for all parts and quickly revise things during note entry. I have not been happy with Dorico. For large orchestral scores it does seem to be the best, but for little adjustments or moving things around in small ensembles, it is very annoying to go back and forth between "Writing" and "Layout" modes, and even then it has some inflexibility and requires chasing down the right value in the right menu in the right box...For many things, you have to do it their way, which is often to delete+re-enter notes instead of just editing. Like you can't start a measure with a dotted quarter - You have to go into entry and then move to the 4th slot in order for the rest to appear behind it. I think of music linearly so this ain't for me... Musescore, for being free (*other than harvesting your user data) is awesome. However, as someone that really likes to tweak the layout & display, it has certain layout limitations and tesxt inflexibilities I can't get around. It doesn't have every bell&whistle, but if you're there on your journey, it is totally worth learning.

Its not that easy. It depends on what you need. I dont need good playback at all, i use the programm for score sheets only (for prints). In that case, Musescore4 is really very good, i tried it a couple of month ago for the first time and i am deeply impressed. Probably Dorico is "better" (what does it mean - "better"?), but my score sheet look really great (i had used Capella and Finale before, which both are not looking better), i know Sibelius Scores (which also do not look better), so what means "better"? Why should I (again) spend money for something what i dont need? Musescore4 is fantastic, yes, you can learn it very quickly (not so for Dorico!) and it works very logical (not so Dorico).

So essentially, you’ll never use MuseScore because you use to Dorico and you wouldn’t want to learn a new software, even though you stated that both programs have great features. Well, that’s fine but being comfortable with Dorico and familiar with using it isn’t a dramatic reason for never using MuseScore. Saying that you’ll NEVER (all caps in the title) use MuseScore seems to imply that there are some distinctive reasons why you won’t - like some major features that are missing or something glitchy or not user-friendly. But you say both programs are good and can pretty much do the same things, and that comes across like a preference for one over another. It’s a personal choice. Again, that’s fine but the title can be a little misleading.

I'm taking a music theory class right now. My music teacher still uses Finale and is reluctant to switch. That's probably because he has the $300 version. I use MuseScore because of its customization and no cost. I tried Dorico SE, but I quickly figured out it's not as customizable as MuseScore. I also tried Lilypond, but I decided that it's not worth the learning curve. In my opinion, MuseScore is perfect for amateurs like me because it's free, and it has features that allow for full customization. I've seen quite a few songs on UA-cam that are made entirely within it.

As someone who once had a (commercial) software company that lasted more than 25 years, I am saddened by loss of Finale. As amateur musician in UK I bought Finale and switched to Sibelius after about six months. Finale suited my needs but the support from US was very bad so I cut my losses (time invested) and bought Sibelius which I still have although 'out of date'. I'm old and digitising my music on learning new pieces was so good and I am more than reaping reward for that. Sibelius is massive and too much more than what I need but that's fine. It works well and the support I had was fine. The biggest issue I had was importing scores via Neuraron which was was never good and also failed. It seems there are other softwares I can now buy for this and I will look at them,

Recently, with the release of Cubase Pro version 14, the level of "integration" (I use the term lightly here) with Dorico is vastly improved. Much of the Dorico notation interface has been added to Cubase. Export of native Dorico Project files from Cubase 14 is now supported. So, for musicians who wish to start their composition in Cubase and finish it in Dorico, there is now a feasible path. And while importation of a Dorico exported MusicXML file into Cubase 14 is not currently possible, the word on the street is that will soon be fixed. Many composers are now using a common VEP hosted play template for both Dorico and Cubase to drive via MIDI, playback of orchestral mockups. Not something I would try with Musescore and any DAW today...

NOTE: - When publishing works that seemed to be a transcription of some other composer's work---unless that composition is in the public domain, BE CAREFUL before you publish it into MuseScore. MuseScore is concerned about copyrights of other composer's works, so be sure the arrangement falls under the fair use rules under Section 107--or otherwise, MuseScore may reject your transcribed music publication. My two bits.

I’ve been a composer for over 40 years and used manuscript paper and pen like everyone else. It’s only been the last several years that I started using notation software with Sibelius being my main source. While I really enjoy it (on my M3 MacBook Air), it's certainly not perfect but I’ve never had any crashing issues with it. I think if I have any issues, it’s just that it can be quite time-consuming to not only create compositions but to digitize most of my manuscripts. But it’s worth it.

I started writing music in 1969, so I am familiar with 'the old days'. I am happy that notation software is as good as it is, especially for tasks like parts extraction. However, it does limit creativity. I studied composition with George Crumb, and after any of you have seen his scores, you will realize that no software can replicate his notation.

A lot of the Dorico help videos on UA-cam start the mantra "Dorico, the music notation software". Well, first off saying something over and over doesn't make it true and secondly It think the phrase begs for a definition of "advanced". The auto-pilot in a Tesla is advanced too but I would never use it. Page formatting in Dorico is supposed to be easy but by default it creates some bizarre page layouts with one system stretched over a page and others squeezed together. Collision avoidance seems almost useless. I've taken some weird layouts from Dorico, exported them to MusicXML (Dorico's implementation of MusicXML is not good by the way), imported them into MuseScore and gotten a decent layout almost immediately. Dorico scores, if they are properly formatted, do look more professional than MuseScore's but getting the proper format can be a hellish experience. My main complaint with Dorico is that it seems built with a software programmer mentality. It's full of "clever" ways of doing things (programmers like "clever") but that cleverness often leads to complexity (i.e. text entry. Really?) and complexity can mean hours of hair putlling. Dorico does make some things easier but it also makes it easy to really screw up. A lot of the Dorico learning process, as a consquence, is learning how not to make mistakes. Another downside of Dorico is that a lot of the online documentation is out of date. While the people at Steinberg try to be helpful the attitude seems to be that of a typical developer (and I used to be one) which is: "the problem lies somewhere between the keyboard and the chair." This can be rather infuriating when you have work to get done. Their response to frustration is often to chastise the hapless user for being uncivil. I think shelling out $800+ for software that isn't doing what you expect buys you the right to a bit of crankiness. The better a piece of software is, the less it needs tech-support. Comparing what MuseScore gives you for free with what you get from Dorico for a lot of money, I would say that the value per dollar/pound/euro goes overwhelmingly to MuseScore. I got Dorico as a result of the Finale cross-over discount offer. In my estimation it's almost worth what I paid for it.

  • @jefftincher6997

@@codetech5598 I don't think it would be overly difficult. Too much to describe in a UA-cam comment though. :) Does it run on Windows XP? You could use a tool like VirtualBox to make a virtual computer and install XP from your old installation disc / licence if you still have one. (Give it reasonable specs for the period: 2 processor cores at most, 2GB of RAM, 32 bit, and definitely no networking support.) Windows 95/98 are a bit trickier to get running from what I understand, though can be done with a 3rd party patch alongside installing from your old install disc, or with other x86 emulators like 86Box which people seem to have had success with. (My hypothetical phrasings are only because I haven't attempted it myself so I can't endorse anything in particular.) Be reasonable with period specs again: 1 processor core, 128MB of RAM, and again no networking support. If this interests you, try googling for "VirtualBox + Windows XP" or "86Box + Windows 98" and see what you find, though obviously always verify stuff you read on the internet before making any changes to your computer. :) *I mention original installation discs / licences because that is technically the only fully-legal way to install old versions of Windows. Use what works for you and really at the end of the day all these programs are there to help create the final product. I use Musescore because it is what I started using and if something better comes along I probably won't switch either. Good enough is good enough.

I've been learning Dorico--the frustrating thing is that it will change what I've entered to what it thinks the notation should be--which I find unacceptable. I've looked at information on turning off Dorico's automatic revision features, but have not succeeded in getting them to work. This seems inexcusable, especially since I'm using Dorico Pro 5. .

So you are just saying you are used to. That's valid, switching software is stupid, except if it gives you great benefits. She doesn't say that MuseScore isn't bad (And it's also open source so that's a win for me)

MuseScore was simply isolated since it is one of the most popular free software programs that is recommended the most frequently, even to those who already use Sibelius or Dorico. However, MuseScore is great! I'd recommend it to most musicians.

SO really, this is a video about how sticking to something that you already know, is better than jumping ship to something different? Well, yes. I'm a long time Logic user, so any amount of people telling me that Reaper/Cubase/Ableton is the "best" is not going to sway me, as I'm not interested going through the procedure you outlined with a switch to something different. Why should I? I know Logic well, its plus points, its foibles etc. If, as happened with Finale, Apple decided to can Logic, then it becomes a different story. So not really sure why you singled out Musescore here at all? It is free, after all, and for many of us it will be perfectly good enough. Not everybody requires all the in depth engraving features of Dorico and Sibelius.

Fair points! I've simply have received a lot of questions why I chose Dorico (or any paid software) over MuseScore (or any free software with limited features), even though I have used Dorico much longer and do need the in depth features! Many colleagues recommend switching to MuseScore since there is no financial harm, though switching would be disadvantageous for some individuals. MuseScore was simply isolated since it is one of the most popular free software programs that is recommended the most frequently, even to those who already use Sibelius or Dorico. I definitely agree with sticking to what you know, and Dorico is definitely a great notation software! However, one point that I think you could have taken into account more is the fact that Musescore's shortcuts for every single action can be whatever you want them to be, so you can have it function like Finale/Dorico or any other software you're coming from. Also, I get the point of Musescore not adding anything feature-wise that Dorico doesn't already have, but it's also the same the other way around (Dorico doesn't have any special features, except maybe the integration with Cubase). A lot of composers use and/or are switching to Musescore because it will always be free and open source, and yet it's just as professional as the paid competition.

@@hPomplays ya it was a joke lol. by cues I mean smaller notes that appear in players’ parts that show what another instrument is playing. There is a “cue size” option to make notes look smaller but it still treats them like normal notes that have playback and show up on the full score. Sibelius and dorico let you turn notes into cues with 1 click and they will not play back nor show up on the full score

I'm right there with you. dorico has everything I need, formatting is really nice, I know where everything is, and it also has a pseudo-piano roll view in the form of the play tab. meaning I can also *just* use dorico alone if I need to(which I often do), making it easy to make quick sketches of pieces to send to clients as proof of concepts properly mixed, rather than musescore which has less in that sense

Depending on what you need, for the lead band sheet, Finale is the best. I am using Dorico and Sibelius too. But some stupid designs in the texts and layout of Dorico and Sibelius make me frustrated. I continue to use Finale. The next option for me is Sibelius. If MuseScore is good enough, I will use it.

I've used Finale for ten years. I purchased Dorico when Make Music announced the end of life for Finale. I found Dorico's learning curve fairly easy compared to Finale. Finale was quite difficult to learn. That said, I'm very comfortable using Finale and would continue using Finale if it hadn't been discontinued. I've just started using Dorico and so far Dorico has been great for me.
